Memory Issues Windows 7 64 Bit - Driving Me Crazy

Jan 15, 2013

I wondered if someone would be able to help me with an issue which is driving me crazy today, I'm running Windows 7 64 bit with 8gb of RAM.

I've got an issue where the system is caching around 5gb of that Ram, and no matter what I do I can't seem to get the system to release the damn memory. I thought prefect was the cause but it is not, I also tried running the Process Idle Tasks command but that didn't help either.

Windows 7 Explorer Hanging Up Memory Like Crazy?

Apr 23, 2012

I'm running: Dell XPS 9100 Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit SP1 16 GB RAM Quad-core Intel 920 @ 2.67 GHz C: drive = 2 TB RAID-0 internal drive set (2 disks) E: drive = 2 TB RAID-0 G-RAID external array attached w/ eSATA (2 disks) Today I had a serious problem with Windows Explorer. I was trying to access a 3.2 GB TIFF file on my external E: array (used for backup, Second Copy is my backup utility) and sorted the directory by Date Modified to find the file.Windows Explorer hung and spun for 45 minutes until I had to power-switch my computer off. Froze up everything. Consumed up to 14 GB of RAM with non-stop page faulting. I even got a black screen trying to start Task Manager to kill the process. The black screen hung, then threw an error msg saying it couldn't open the window and said either press ESC or power-switch the computer. Hitting ESC worked once, but the next time I tried it 10-15 min later I had to power-switch the machine.Windows upon restarting applied some patches during the boot sequence in a place I'd never seen it do that before (while the colorful logo on black background is coming up, before the normal 'Windows is configuring your computer' message on the blue background when it's updating).Lost all my configs - Start Menu, Desktop, Firefox bookmarks, IE favorites, Photoshop actions/recently-edited-files, etc. My files and programs seem ok, though, so far.In Resource Monitor the Windows Explorer window had taken almost 100% of memory, 12 GB of my 16 GB. Photoshop could not even close. It had spun like that on my internal C: drive. But defragging seemed to fix it. On my external drive defragging doesn't help much. Tonight, after defragging my E: external array, I again tried accessing the same directory to work with an updated copy of the same TIFF file. Again I sorted the directory in descending order to sort the file to the top. And I tried to delete another 3 GB file in the same directory. Windows Explorer kept the resources hanging for 20-30 min instead of 45+ minutes. But this time Resource Monitor said Explorer was taking up from 12.9 to 19 GB of memory (on a 16 GB machine). This time Explorer did allow Photoshop to close. But I had to kill the Photoshop.exe process after exiting Photoshop, and some minutes later the memory usage dropped from 19 GB to 98.7 MB.Has anyone seen anything like this? what's going on?My E: drive is external, used for backup, is 75% full and has 240,000 user files on it + whatever system files, Second Copy control files, etc.

Going Crazy With Neighbor's Computer?

Dec 3, 2011

For the last 7 hours I've been dealing with the neighbor's computer. The original problem was their hard drive was failing, causing everything to run very slowly. Today I installed a new hard drive and reinstalled Windows 7 Home Premium x64. The installation went fine. After setting up their profiles and making sure it was up-to-date I proceeded to create a system image so they could load that instead of having to reinstall in the future.Their external hard drive is some annoying ClickFree C2 or something. It was temperamental just trying to get it to show up. I hate removable hard drives with auto-backup programs, I prefer a normal removable hard drive. After getting it to work right I saved a system image to it. However I had renamed the WindowsImageBackup folder to something else. This was a problem because I found out there were a couple things I had wanted to do before making that image. So I went to restore that image and it said there were no images found. I thought it was a problem with drivers but it turns out the folder must be renamed to WindowsImageBackup before restoring. After restoring the image I activated Windows which was one of the things I had wanted to do. After that I tried to create a system image again. However, it gave me an error saying there wasn't enough room for the shadow volume copy , 0x80780119 I believe. However, the image should only take a measly 17GB since it is a new installation, and there is over 700GB of free space on the external HDD!

Acer Touchpad Going Crazy Clicking On Everything

When I press F7 AND FN IT DISAbles the touchpad and I can use it fine with the mouse. Is this something that is wrong with the mouse/touchpad settings, a Virus or something else I am not considering. It is actually doing the same crazy stuff when using an external Mouse. It is just clicking things automatically when I move over the icons. It is also happening in safe mode. It is like the Laptop is on steroids. Suggestions ; Software, hardware or a virus. I just replaced the screen on the Laptop

Windows 7 Explorer.exe Running At Total Memory After A Few Minutes "memory Leak"

Oct 28, 2012

To start, I have Windows 7, on Sony Vaio laptop. I have been working on the issues with the malware removal team, but now machine looks clean, I am still having issues. When starting the computer and going to the task manager, I can watch explorer.exe start at about 18K memory usage and then grow constantly until it is running with almost all of the computer's physical memory after about seven min. I cannot get the context menu to show up after a few min by right clicking on anything. I had been experiencing "freezing" while playing Eden Eternal (an online role playing game) before that, which made me consider malware and seek help here at BleepingComputer. The freezing has ended, last time I played on that machine at least, but now there seems to be some issue with the explorer.exe taking all of the memory. I haven't been using the machine since I don't trust that there's not something running in the background that shouldn't be. In resource monitor there were "connections" that had "-" for both the name and the PID, but I don't know if that was the malware of if that's normal somehow? Issue with explorer.exe seems to be limited to only one user account, and not the other one. That is to say that if I log on one of the other accounts explorer.exe behaves normally, as far as memory usage.

Troubleshooting Excessive Memory Use (Memory Leak) After Playing Video

Oct 6, 2012

i am having a problem with my memory getting tied up / used up and not being able to access it again until i reboot.

machine: dell xps studio 8100
os: win 7,
processor: i7 2.8
ram: 16gb (max it will take)
video: ati radeon 5700 (running 3 monitors)

versions: as far as i know i am running current versions of everything, including video drivers, flash, chrome, etc. (i've tried running chrome with both the build in version of flash and the system version -haven't seen a difference)

browser: i nearly exclusively run chrome / canary with auto-updates so am at the latest builds.what seems to cause me to use up / run out of memory is after i play videos (Internet, netflix, etc.), the memory seems to get used, but is not returned to the system, even if the browser is closed and re-opened.right now for example things are working fine; i rebooted my system a couple hours ago (but have not played any videos). i have adobe lightroom running, picasa, chrome and canary (currently 4 web browser windows open with 52 tabs open). task manager currently shows me using 8.20gb of ram, that seems pretty reasonable to me.

normally my system will keep running properly (if a program is closed, memory is freed up) right up until i start to play any videos (Internet, netflix, etc.) then it will start using up more memory. (of course i expect it to use more memory during playback) however, even if i restart the browser, the memory does not get freed back up. for example, just prior to the reboot, with everything closed, i was using right around 8gb of ram. once i rebooted, i was using 1.something gb of ram prior to opening any programs.however, once i start playing some videos, i never seem to be able to get my ram freed back up again unless i reboot the whole system. this is not just a problem with how much memory the system shows as being available, i frequently actually run out of memory. (task manager will show me as using around 15gb and then everything starts swapping out like crazy).

Chkdsk High Memory Usage / Memory Leak?

Jun 1, 2009

I find that if I run chkdsk and watch the memory usage in task manager it jumps by about 50MB every 2 seconds or so until it either finishes or hits around 3.2GB at which point my physical memory shows 99% used (I'm running 4GB), and the system of course slows to a crawl.f you just run a quick chkdsk on your boot drive you may not notice it, but try running something longer like chkdsk /r on a flash drive or chkdsk /f on a bigger internal drive (but not your OS drive as this would require a reboot) and watch the memory usage climb. I have duplicated this on both systems I have running Windows 7. My XP machine (checking the same USB flash drive) uses a much more normal amount of memory for chkdsk (20 - 30 MB).

Increased Memory Usage With Added Memory?

Nov 5, 2011

I just built a new computer and started with 8GB of memory. A few weeks down the line I purchased another set of the same memory because it was on such a good deal and had great reviews (newegg). It also was working well for me, so I figured maybe more could be better.

I haven't noticed any decrease/increase in system performance except Alt-Tabbing has recently got slower. Also, Windows 7 was sitting tight on 1.3gb to 2gb of memory usage prior to the extra 8 (now 16) being added. Even when gaming, it went up to like 3gb. Now that I've added the extra it's going up to 4.5gb or better. Also, is it possible to speed up my alt-tabbing? It seems to have a good 3-4 second pause in it instead of being immediate like it was.

Computer specs:
Windows 7 HP 64-bit
gSkill 16gb 1866 memory (BIOS shows it at 1866, too)
Intel i5-2500k Sandy Bridge (OC'd 4.6 with factory Overclock presets)
ASRock z68 Extreme4 mobo

Memory Question - 8GB Of Memory

So i have 32x Windows 7 I also have 8GB of memory.

My question is how much memory can this architecture actually see? its 32bit, so shouldn't it only see a max of 4? in the my computer properties, it tells me i have 8, but a bunch of programs tell me i have the 3.25.

Do i need to move to 64x? and what happens with the drivers for my custom built pc? will i be able to find them? (most of my disks wont install 32 bit drivers on Windows 7 beta) i cant really do the vista driver backup with driver max, because i use XP

any help? ideas? suggestions? Thoughts? Comments? Wize cracks?

Windows 7 Memory Use Too Low

I have run the memory test suggested in the forums elsewhere, and it results state 4.00 g installed and no problems or errors. I have tried the suggestion to:run msconfig, select boot tab, choose advanced options, and uncheck the Max mem box. Ihave followed these instructions to the letter, and I still have only 3.5 Gs used. When I was running Vista, it used all my memory, and my game (Alganon) performed without any faults. Now, the program chashes (Alganon has stopped working) almost ever time I run it. Nothing else has changed, nothing. I want to know why windows has determined it will not support my 4 Gs in this much-touted Windows7HP.

Now I know these exceptions come with if you write an infinite loop in programming etc but this occurs EVERY time whether I attempt to open a programme or not - so it must be the OS not a software thing.

What determines the maximum memory Win 7 is capable of utilizing in my system in that 2.5 - 3.6 range?

I have been reading that the bloatware that comes with the computer (sony vaio stuff) can contribute to this (you may notice there are 99 processes). Windows Says Low On Memory When Have 24gb Ram

Oct 28, 2012

ill admit I am using 22/24 gb of ram or something like that when I start getting the message saying to close an app (the main one I am using) because windows is running low on ram.

is there a way to disable this message because i would prefer to close a background application if i need to (and i almost never do) the only real error is the fact windows is telling me there maybe low memory (still have 1-2 GB unused ram) also with the SSD when/if I do run out there is little to no impact generally anyway, that and most my apps are on the ram drive.

also, semi related is windows likes to change the colour mode on occasion when computer is running fine, think i have fixed that one though....
