View 1 Replies View Relatedhow to log out users that are idle on Windows 7? I work for a company that has computers in general areas, anyone can walk up and login and use it for business. Many of my users don't log off and later when they change their password these machines lock out their AD accounts. I was thinking that we could use the group policies that are used for terminal services to log out after being idle for x amount of time.

I bought it in 2009, loaded with Windows 7 and it still runs like a dream perfect for what they would use it for. I was wondering what kind of precautions can I take to limit their ability to run exe files or to install things when I'm not arround b/c there desktop is a mess.....half of the browser window is full of search engine bars....you know the drill when it comes to family computers. I'd really hate to give them laptop and see them turn it into crap.
View 1 Replies View RelatedBrand new Windows 7 user.
Two users on this new PC; myself and son.
Want to limit the amount of HD space he can use, or my 1 TB is going to be filled 100% with videos, music, etc. in short order.
So I went to the C: drive/Properties/Quota and played around with it some, but haven't actually applied it.
For me at least, it's not totally clear what happens, so would like to ask the following, please:
a. When I first got the PC a few weeks ago, I set up myself as a User.
But did not apply any Passwords or sign-in requirements for either of us..
A week or so later, I added my son's name, also, as a User.
Since there are no passwords, sign in Passwords, etc., am I considered the defacto Administrator (as I was "first") ?
b. It is not clear that if I set up a limit on this Quota option screen(s), is it applied to both of us, or just him (if I am considered the Administrator) ?
I thought that there would be some kind of screen showing both Users, and what their limits are, but apparently not ?
c. Can this be done without any Passwords, sign in Passwords, etc ?
Not too sure what else to ask.
I'm looking for a powerful software that will limit my own computer usage, of course on an administrator account. For example let's say from now until one month later I limit computer usage for one hour a day, since I decide and confirm my decision to the software it will be impossible to change my mind under any circumstances, until the time limit has expired. I know how to fix computer time. But I cannot find this software!!!!!! ALL software's are made for parental control (don't word on administrator account or changed easily) but I could find no program to limit computer addiction!

View 3 Replies View RelatedLast time a few months ago I wanted to monitor the internet usage of computers, I know have a solution. I now want to know, what FREE software that can fulfill all the following requirements:1. Be installed on the central server that provides internet access ONLY, not on client computers2. Monitor what web URL's have each and every client have been to3. Is not a demo or trial version of the software; it is simply just free software.4. Install on Windows 7 computer There is no requirement as to the content of the webpages accessed or sent, simply the URL's is sufficient, though it'll be good I have already tried:- Wireshark (Doesn't categorize data and it doesn't filter out the data)- MING Network Monitor (is not free software)- Spiceworks (No such function)- GFI web monitor (not free software)

I've looked at the result from the Windows Debugging Tool, but I'm not sure how to read it as it's my first time. I did note the names "fltmgr.sys" and "SearchIndexer" stand out.I'd like to point out that no new programs were installed prior to the BSOD's and that I've updated all of the drivers that I could find for the motherboard since the BSOD's. I could not get the BIOS to be updated because Gigabyte doesn't seem to have a 64-bit version available. I'm currently running a thorough disk check on the HDD.
Computer spec:
- AMD Athlon II X2 250 Dual Core Processor
- Gigabyte MA785GM-US2H Motherboard
- Western Digital WD5000AAKS Caviar Blue Hard Drive
- Patriot PGS24G6400ELK Gamer Series 4096MB PC6400 DDR2
- OCZ ModXStream Pro 500W Modular PowerSupply
Things I noticed before crashes:
- Internet stops working
- Computer becomes sluggish
- Seems to crash while multi-tasking (multiple windows, downloading+browsing, etc.)
- Windows Update is unable to install SP1 for this machine. It downloads but fails to install.
First of all, my config:
CPU: Intel pentium dual core e5400 2.7Ghz
GFX: Sapphire HD 6670 1GB gddr5
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-G41M combo (Award Modular bios v6.00 PG)
HDD: WD Caviar Green 1TB (EARX)
Network adapter: Atheros AR8151 PCI-E gigabit ethernet controller (NDIS 6.20)
I am experiencing audio playback stuttering. I checked if this is due to processing or ram usage, but nothing was wrong there as audio was playing well under high processing load and high memory usage. But recently, i found that when i browse internet or download something, it starts to lag. I am using winamp 5.63. I came to know that a few other people are experiencing this problem too, but i didnt find any solution.
How can I, as administrator block a non-administrator account from using internet but can recieve and send email. I'm using windows 7.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just installed a new 64 gig SSD in my computer. I also have a 2T secondary hard drive. The SSD is not big enough to contain all the stuff that will eventually be in "My documents",i.e. under "users" so I need to move the users directory to my secondary hard drive but havewindows behave as it were in its original location.I did some research and found the following technique which seemed plausible (and several people said it worked for them)
1. Install windows normally.
2. After install, boot from installation disk.
3. Get into the command prompt by clicking "repair".
4. Use robocopy to copy c:users to d:users. The command line should be: robocopy c:users d:users /mir /xj /copyall
5. Verify all files copied successfully.
6. Delete c:users. Command line should be: rmdir /s /q c:users
7. Delete c:documents and settings. Command line should be: rmdir "c:documents and settings"
8. Create junction to new users directory. Command line should be: mklink /j c:users d:users
9. Create junction for the old "documents and settings". Command line should be: mkdir /j "c:documents and settings" d:users
10. Restart computer.
Note:When in recovery mode the disk drives end up with different drive letters than what the normally have.Consequently my SSD drive which is "C" became "E" and my hard drive which is "D" became "C". Confusing, but I adjusted the above commands to reflect this. All seemed to go well until I rebooted. The computer booted up fine, but when I entered my password to log in windows complained that it could not find my profile. Since I could not log in at all I was forced to re-install windows. Supposedly, this is doable and I NEED to do it asap as my SSD will not hold all the stuff that will eventually be in "users".
I am cleaning a laptop out and i created a brand new user name. I deleted the other 2 users using the control passwords2.
So the machine starts and i select the user. Process usage is very high and it says 50, but actual user shows about 9. I click show processes from all users and i find the culprit as well as 50 processes. I deleted the users so there shouldnt be that option.
Why is there more processes if this is the only user, why does it even have the option?
What are the all users and default users folders? Do I need them or can I delete them if I am the only user.

I got a stupid email from MS -- How's the RC going.
In it it says something about you can install on 3 separate computers.
Well I'm still using the BETA keys and haven't come up against any 3 Computer limit or activation problems with THOSE keys - and I've tested Windows 7 on SCORES of different hardware configurations.
Has anybody actually had a problem with the RC keys or is the email from MS totally BS.
