Internal Hard Drive Keeps Disappearing?
Aug 12, 2010
I upgraded from Win XP to Windows 7 64 bit about a month ago (I did a clean install as I've always had issues with in place upgrades). My machine has four hard drives total, two internal SATA drives, and two external USB drives. For some reason my secondary internal drive, a WD 500 GB SATA drive (nothing fancy), keeps disappearing randomly while windows is running. This started about a week ago, it ran ok for the first 2 weeks or so.The drive comes back fine and dandy if I completely shut down the machine and then boot it back up. The drive stays until some random moment when Windows doesn't see it anymore. Now, if I do a simple Restart the drive doesn't show up, ONLY after I shut down completely, and push the power button back on, does this work. There is nothing in the System logs, no error messages, nothing, it just vanishes and is completely random.

Me and my brother built me a new computer from scratch (he did the building - i did the watching). I purchased an internal hard drive from Overclockers UK. It's a Samsung 1TB drive. I also have a 64 Solid-state drive in there as my primary hard drive that Windows was installed on and a couple of programs are installed on. My storage disk (the 1TB disk) is for all my music/films etc. Whenever I drag and drop a file into the Samsung hard-drive - it copies it rather than moves it instantly. When I had a laptop, I had 3 external hard drives and this is the way it copied files onto them.how I can get the internal drive to stop acting like an external drive?

I have a custom machine that I just recently built a few months ago. Last week, I decided to upgrade the mobo so that I could have more ram slots and a second PCI Express slot. I swapped out the mobos, booted the computer, and everything was working just fine. The only problem is that I'm running Windows 7 OEM and I've heard that you can run into problems when swapping out hardware. My computer was working for about 24 hours after installing the new mobo but at one point the other day the computer just shut itself down. I went to boot it back up and all that popped up was BIOS. I inserted my Windows disc to try and repair my system and I came to find out that my Operating System, along with everything on the Hard Drive was GONE. I have never heard of such a thing happening. So I reinstalled 7 and basically had to start over from scratch. Another day goes by and the same thing happens. This is now the second time I've had to reinstall Windows 7. My computer is running fine now but I am afraid that this is going to happen again so I'm reluctant to put anything on my hard drive until I know this issue is resolved. I contacted MS but they aren't much help as I only have the OEM version of Windows.

A computer has a 1TB drive as the boot drive (C. It had 800GB of files on it. When the user booted recently, most of the files were deleted from the hard drive. I installed the drive in another computer, and the files show up as deleted. The computer passes malware and virus scans without issue.
I'm currently using Recuva to try to recover the available files (about 80% of the deleted files appear to be recoverable, but some critical files are not.) The recovered files are being saved to an external USB drive.
The only time I've had this problem before was corrected with chkdsk. I'm very cautious about doing anything with this drive until I have recovered all that I can manually.
It passed Spinrite with no issues. The computer is Windows 7 Home Edition 64-bit.

I have had my Windows XP updated to Windows 7 by a computer tech. He promised 250 GB internal hard drive but I only received 80 GB. He installed an E Drive with 465 GB. Is 80 GB enough for Windows 7? Also, what can be manually stored in the E drive?

When I turn on/restart the computer, the desktop itself has two hard drives in it (250GB and 1TB, 1TB is not the one the OS is on)
When I put the computer to sleep, and then wake it up, the 1TB is not active, and to access it I have to completely restart the computer. I'm using a legitimate retail version of Windows 7 Ultimate, if that helps any?

My relatively new Dell desktop power supply died so trying to retrieve my data (pictures and docs) off the internal hard drive. Hooked it up with an adapter I have used in the past which seems to work fine and I can see the drive when I look on windows explorer on my laptop. The only problem is the Windows 7 operating system is preventing me from access the data stating I dont have security access or right to copy the data.

I have a dead laptop, I believe it was the hard drive, anyway. I took the hard drive out, connected it to my Network computer, all looks well, I heard it spinning (Good sign?) and then I booted the computer, it didn't actually load windows 7, it spent like a good 10-15mins saying "Loading windows 7" so I turned it off, moved the SATA cable to a different slot, it booted.. then when trying to detect the drive, it doesn't exist. I will need to format it, as it does have windows 7 on that drive aswell.

I've been running my current set up for roughly two years and it has been fine until recently. My secondary drive for programs, storage, etc. will just disappear. It does not happen on any set routine or anything, just randomly. If I restart I do not get the drive back, however, If I shut it down and plug the drive into a different port it recognizes it again. I've gone back to the same port numerous times so none of the ports are bad.

Yesterday, I was browsing on my computer and heard a weird clicking noise when the CD drive was running. About a few minutes after that, Firefox froze so I did a hard reboot, and up comes this message:
"No boot sector on internal hard drive No bootable devices--strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility Press F5 to run onboard diagnostics."
I have no idea what it means, and I've been everywhere trying to do System Restore using the Windows 7 reinstallation disk, but unfortunately I couldn't create a restore point because my jump drive doesn't have enough space and Startup Repair couldn't solve my problem. I've even tried the bootrec.exe on Command Prompt but I had no idea what to do. This is the first time that this has happened to me. My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1545 and I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.
I'm on a tight limb about this problem right now because my warranty expired in early June this year, and I don't have the money for them to look at it, let alone buy a brand-new hard drive.

I am running windows 7 home 64 bit (build 7600). I have a gateway fx7026. It has two internal hard drives. When I look under device manager they are both listed and they are both listed under the bios menu. When I look in my computer though under hard disk drives it only shows the one that I have the OS on. When I had Vista it showed both of them. Is this something I should be worried about. The drives are listed as WDC WD3200AAJS-22B4A0 DRIVE 1 and WDC WD3200AAJS-22B4A0 DRIVE 0.

It's a dell latitude, 1 year old. Laptop suddenly crashed and when the laptop booted it said: "no boot sector on internal hard drive". I tried repairing the boot sector with the windows repair function, but the hard drive is just empty... nothing to repair. Then I tried to boot off a ubuntu live cd. which worked. and showed me an empty hard drive with the_maximum_capacity_of_the_drive_GB of unallocated space.
Since that I reinstalled windows 7 two times, and stopped working after an hour or so. I installed ubuntu, which worked for several days. then i tried windows 7 again (clean install). And then I kept working on the laptop for a couple of hours until the "crash" happened. All the programs stopped working suddenly. When I opened anything I was shown this error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion."
After that everything is lost if I turn the computer off. And I'm back at an empty unformatted hard drive. I changed the sata operation mode in the bios to different options before every installation of windows. I didn't try xp, because I don't have dell-xp cd's . Is the hard drive broken? I guess not because ubuntu works. and windows 7 also, but it just goes away suddenly... Here's a video (shot in portraitmode) of the event... [URL].

I am using a Dell Inspiron 14 laptop. A few days ago, I noticed that my laptop has become incredibly slow (the system will hang sometimes, and continue as per normal after a while), and this coincided with my laptop beginning to make this weird, sharp beeping sound. At first I did not pay much attention to it, but later this was joined by several BSODs, and my laptop became even slower (games that usually did not lag was now hanging halfway through, and continuing as per normal after a lengthy period of 1 minute or so). I tried to find the origin of the noise, and I think it came from my Internal hard drive sector, and thus decided to open the sector up (in hindsight I probably should not have). After I replaced it, without doing much (just doing the usual IT-amateur stuff, wiping it and blowing it a few times), my situation has now worsened to the point that startup takes a much longer time, and finally now it hangs at the "Starting Windows" screen, but without the Windows 7 logo showing, and my screen later turns black.

my problem is that sometimes when i turn on my computer i only have 1 dvd drive( i have 2 installed+3 other internal harddrives), and my primary disc that i have my os on. this does not happen when i use another harddrive with same os on, so i think it have to be driver sort of problem. they have never disappeared in bios, only in Windows 7 on 1 of the discs with os. does anybody know a fix for this? i really dont want to reinstall/wipe my disc. and i have both checked the cables an even switched them to new ones, still showing in bios but not in os. if it were only 1 drive i might consider it dying, but when it's 3 drives witch all pass chkdsk+dvd drive it must be something else? this is a almost new selfbuild pc so i know everything inside is OK.

Let me say first that I am not dual booting. I have a 250gb Internal SATA drive, and a 800gb internal SATA drive. Both hooked up and ready to go.What I want to do, and am unsure if it's possible, is to install Windows 7 64bit on the 250gb drive, and thats IT. I want to boot from that drive, but everything else I want to go onto the 800gb drive.I haven't done this yet but I get the feeling that if I were, when it boots from the 250, things that I download and install would always try and add themselves there. And I dread of having to manually move downloaded files and redirect installed programs every time.
