Installing New OS On New SSD With Old OS On Old HDD
Jan 1, 2012
I will have a brand new SSD on Tuesday and want to have my OS on it. The plan is to install it, install Win 7 on it and then my old hard drive that has the OS on it will still be usable and will not cause any issues, since if I boot from the SSD then the old OS on the HDD would not be a problem.
Will this work and what will happen to all of the apps I have on the hard drive?

I already have SP1 installed and I don't use Live whatever, so why does it keep re-downloading and installing? It must have done that 20 times already at 1.5MB each time and it is always installing when I shut my PC down.

I have already updated all my drivers and software to no avail.my second sata hdd is listed as G: do I need to make it first boot device to install XP. I looked in the bios but didn't see how to specify a particular drive.

I have a desk top with windows 7 32 bit that has older software. I purchased a laptop that has windows 7 64 bit. I tried to install my older software on the laptop, but was unable because of the 64 bit operating system. Can I install Windows 7 32 bit over the 64 bit, so I can keep my older software.

I purchased the 3-user pack, and accidentally installed the 32 bit version when I wanted the 64 bit. What is the easiest way to install the 64 bit. I tried to insert the disk and restart, but it is telling me that the software is incompatible.

I recently purchased a Samsung 840 SSD, and a new copy of windows 7. I currently have windows 32 bit installed on my PC, but then new copy I bought is a 64 bit version.
If anyone could run me through the installation process of the new version of windows that would be great. I want to get rid of the OS I am running currently but keep all the files on my HDD, this meaning I want my SSD to be my C: with my OS and a few applications on it.

So I built a new PC (first time builder) and surprisingly there were no issues installing any of the hardware components, and everything has been going well so far.... until it was time to install the windows 7 OS. The installation approached 99% and then it asked for the product activation key and it did not work. After researching the issue online, I found that I was using a windows 7 'upgrade' disk rather than an actual full license for Windows 7. Luckily, I had only paid $10 for the disk at my school as part of a student discount. So now I have the 99% complete install present on the computer and when I boot up the system it brings me straight to where I need to enter in the product key, which is always not going to work. This morning I purchased the Window 7 home premium edition OEM 64 bit for $99 on newegg, (I realize that it is tied to the unique mobo in my computer). My question is that can I format my SSD now to remove all the previous installation windows 7 upgrade junk before I install the OEM version, or will it bring me straight back to the screen where I need to enter the product key again for the upgrade version? Will the copy that I ordered recognize that it is a different version of Windows 7 and prompt me to format my ssd before the install?

I would like to ask for forum members diagnosis before I go spend hours working on the laptop for hours. The security software on the laptop will not work because Windows 7 SP1 has not been installed on the laptop. I can't seem to download SP1 from Microsoft. The local office of Geek Squad diagnosed the problem being that there is a problem with Windows 7 and it will need to be re-installed. I would like to see if forum members agree or have a different diagnosis. Its going to take me quite a while to re-install windows 7 and I would like to get a second opinion before I devote that sort of time.

I was thinking of buying windows 7 and a new HDD for myself for xmas and I wanted to install 7 on the new HDD. I currently have XP installed on my HDD at home and I was wondering if it were possible to install 7 on the new hard drive I buy and still have access to the files and programs on the other drive? Will the other programs be able to run from another hard drive or will they NEED to be installed on the new one?

I have some updated software that requires .net Framework 4 to run.I use this on an older laptop that I have not ever used on line. By never going on line, I think this is the greatest virus protection ever. Anyway, to install the Framework 4 from Microsoft, one of the requirements is to be on line, which I do not want to do. Is there any way to install this Microsoft software without hooking up on line?

I am trying to install SP1 for W7 on an x64 machine, but run into a BSOD during the process (one of the times the machine reboots to install the SP). The stop code is the classic 0x7B, but there is no "title" for the error.W7 ran fine for a few days, as I was gradually installing updates. However now, while installing SP1 I can't finish the installation or even boot into safe mode.

I have formatted and copied windows 7 to my 4GB USB key and I have installed a new HDD into my Dell Optiplex 745. When I boot up the computer I am notified with:PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cablePXE-M0F: Existing Broadcom PXE ROMI have searched and found out that this can be caused by a bad hdd but this can't be the case seeing that I literally opened it new from it's packaging and instantly installed it. Also I heard that in order to install via USB you need to place USB to #1 in boot sequence. I have tried this but when I do this all I get is a screen with a flashing underscore at the top of the screen and I can't do anything. So I changed my boot sequence back to the way it was:1. Onboard or USB Floppy Drive (not present)2. Onboard or USB CD-ROM Drive3. Onboard SATA Hard Drive4. Onboard Network Controller5. USB DeviceI have no backup disk and I have no access to a Windows 7 DVD, all I have is it on USB.

I just bought my new machine and put it all together.I've got a fair amount of experience when it comes to building and troubleshooting.I bought a brand spanking new copy of Windows 7 Professional and it won't install.I pop the CD in my drive(The 64 bit Windows 7), I get the error stating that I have an I/O error with one of my components. When I put the 32 bit CD in- it states that Bootmgr cannot be started or is corrupt.
I grabbed a HDD out from another computer that is running on XP and plugged into my new PC. It loads to the WinXP screen, then a quick blue screen of death and resets. New PC Specs are as follows:
Asus M4A79T Deluxe Mobo
4 Gigs of G-Skill RAM
AMD Phenom 2 x4 Quad Core
80 Gig WD HDD(Sata)
Lite-On DvD Burner/Reader(Sata)

I'm having a problem with my laptop (ASUS G53JW). The problem is whenever I plug in an input device, it always installs instead of just being readily available for use. For example, when I plugged in my mouse for the first time, it installed, then when I unplug it and then later on plug it in again, it installs itself again. It not only happens to my mouse, but also to other input devices just to be clear.

I bought a laptop recently and when it arrived i turned it and on the install started but i didn't have the time to go through this properly as i had to go out and when it got to the part about creating partitions i switched it off. I thought when i turned it on again i'd be able to setup the partitions but this was done and now there are two partitions on the laptop: C 49.9 GB and D 624 GB. The C drive has the OS on it and the program files but i think this is a bit small and only has 9.33 GB free, i'm wondering if i re-install windows using the CD does this let me create the partitions again and if so what size should i make them?

recently had to re-install Win7 on my 2009 Acer Aspire 5738Z. The laptop originally came with Vista. I had the hard drive partitioned in half. D: is running Vista. I didn't want to nuke it in case of an emergency. That was a good call because Win7 went bad. C: now runs fresh install of Win 7 64x Pro. I bring up the fact about Vista so you know this was not a native Win7 machine. After the OS re-install & a million window updates & reboots later I was left with some questions.-I have just some basic programs installed so far. My work Outlook (several gigs), office 2010, firefox, chrome, skype, teamviewer, iTunes (fresh install no music). I looked in C: in Computers & I'm using 59G of a 100 G HDD! Does that sound normal? I think I saw right after the Win7 install & all updates it was just over 40G used! Should Win7 & all needed updates amount to 40-50+ G of space? If not what have I done wrong?
-So far the system seems to be running fine. I'm just not sure if i have all the needed drivers for my laptop. I've noticed when I use the volume buttons no icon displays on the screen. It always showed up in Vista & the old Win7. That make me think I might be missing some drivers after the re-install. How can I find out if I have all the needed & up to date drivers?

so my computer had a 4350 that ran perfectly fine. I just dropped in the new 4850 and now the driver isn't installing properly. Everything comes up on the display, but catalyst control center doesn't work nor does going into device manager And clicking to install the drivers. I downloaded the current CCC through the amd website and set it to simply install the video driver and it finishes with a yellow question mark and and nothing has changed. I've uninstalled and reinstalled several times to no avail, but I was just able to find the old CCC disc that came with the 4350 for version 9.6. My best guess now is to uninstall CCC and reinstall it from the disc, unless anyone has a solution to this issue.

To go along with my PC upgrade this summer, I have decided to go with purchasing an SSD to use for my OS along with internet apps, Microsoft office, etc. I plan to install my games (To be specific, Steam, and all games I have on it) as well as the majority of my data onto my 2TB HDD.In particular, I am looking for an explanation on how installation of files works and basic setup. How am I to ensure the OS (Windows 7 Home Premium) will install on the SSD.
