View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a new Asus K53e which had Win 7 Home Premium installed and it was in 64bit. I wanted a ultimate version so i installed that. It was working perfectly but then i went to drive c and saw program files x86 and i didnt i was confused because i didnt want it. I havent touched that folder but then i started researching on how to make all my softwares get installed into the 64bit (Program Files) so sevenforums and other sites told me to go to regedit and change the programfiledir to the one you want so i just removed the (x86) and saved it. I also change Program W6432Dir, ProgramFilesDir (x86), and ProgramFilesDir to just C:Program Files (Value Data). So then i installed adobe cs6 master collection and some programs failed to start. I got the message: C:Program Files (x86)adobeadobe dreamweaver cs6dreamweaver.exe The specified path does not exist. Check the path, and then try again. So now this has happened to adobe cs6 master collects ( some of them like dreamweaver ) and some other softwares.I also forgot what the original ProgramFilesDir, ProgramW6432Dir and ProgramFilesDir (x86) was set to.
View 3 Replies View RelatedUsually we create more than one partitions of HDD. Here, we have two opinions; some people say one shouldn't install software in the operating system's drive (mostly C) and the other people oppose this concept. These are my personal feelings that one shouldn't install software in OS' drive because it will give the 'typical HDD', somehow, a tough task. We will have to put more space for 'C' which will probably increase the seek time and maybe it will increase fragmentation on sectors. So which is the best option to choose and what is the true concept behind selecting the directories?

View 5 Replies View RelatedAbout 2 days ago I noticed that all of a sudden my scroll and progress bars, and all of the prompt windows (save, open file, etc.) changed to a Windows 98 style! I didn't think anything of it until I tried to save an image through Firefox and it wouldn't bring up the prompt to choose a location. Initially I thought it to be exclusive to Firefox, but later I had worked on an Word document and when I tried to Save As... the exact same thing, a flash indicating that it tried to open the location window and that's it. Every program does the exact same thing, no way to bring up a location menu or change directory.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm in the habit of making a backup of files before changing them. To keep track of each version of a file, I make a copy and then rename it to include the last modified date. For example, if I'm going to edit bozo.html, I'll make a copy of the file (in the same directory) and rename it to bozo.2010.05.12.html . In Windows Explorer in Windows 7, if I right click on a file and drag and drop it in the same directory, I get a menu from which I select 'Copy here'. A copy of the file is created with the name 'bozo - Copy.html'. Is there any way to change this function to use the modified date of the file instead of ' - Copy' ?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am running Windows 7 with Media Center on a HTPC, and all the media/content is stored on a NAS. Because this PC is used by kids and guests, it has a READ-ONLY access to my NAS and its content. However, I noticed that each time I access the music folder, windows starts (again!) to build the album art library for each song I have (my NAS has A LOT of content). Same goes for all our pictures? When we first access the pictures (after a reboot?) Media Center has to REBUILD the thumbnail for EACH PICTURE. This takes a lot of time.I could be wrong, but I think that the problem is that the PC tries to write the thumbnails and album art in each directory on the NAS, and obviously is denied writing rights. What I would like to do is have Media Center cache those thumbnails and album arts LOCALLY, so that it doesn't have to rebuild them each time.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have Windows, Adobe CS6 and a few other things installed on my SSD, which is C. But it only has 120GB so I can't install all my software on it so I want the rest of my software to be installed on my 2TB drive, which is F. I followed various tutorials on how to edit the registry. I am running Windows 7 Home (64-bit) so I edited the 64-bit version of regedit. That didn't work. It was still installing programs into my C drive. So I edited both regular regedit and 64-bit regedit and now certain programs don't work, such as Windows Media Player. Is there a way to do this correctly? I was thinking of switching drive letters in BIOS, but one, I don't know how to do that, two, it would probably create a bigger mess. I know Windows 7 "wants" to be on the C drive.[CODE]

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm using Corsair SSD as Windows 7 x64 boot drive, and I moved both User & System Variables TMP/TEMP directory to a new common TMP directory in another hdd (Drive D) & also disabled pagefile on my boot drive (but enabled it for Drive D).
Question is, what happens if I take off my hdd (Drive D and Windows 7 / applications need a temporary directory which doesn't exist anymore ? Will Windows 7 be smart enough to create a new temp dir in the original location ? I wonder if the dependancy on the hdd as TMP directory becomes critical.
About pagefile, I understand Windows 7 needs a min pagefile of 400MB on boot drive to allow memory dump. What happens if I disable pagefile on boot drive & enable it on another drive ? Will memory dump work ?
I'm going to make a clean install of windows 7 and therefor have some question
1)As I want to make a dual boot install with a Linux distribution I thinking about the Partitioning. I want to make following Partitions: [code] Windows 7 also always creates this small 100MB system restore partition. So what would be the best way to prepare these Partions. I would use GParted Live CD to create the Partition in advance, that everything is the way I like it. But I'm not sure if this works without problems for the 100 MB system restore partition (lasts time I got 2 100 MB partitions)
2) I want to move the Users data to a separate partition and found this guides: User Profiles - Create and Move During Windows 7 Installation [2]=User%20Accounts User Folders - Change Default Location(Don't know which one I chose to do so till now) But I see in Windows 7 there are much more useless directories in the users home directory:I've already learned the new Library system, but I still want to use the Users directory. But there is a great mess. Is there a useful/possible way to prevent the directory to mess up with all the sub directories, often created by some apps, don't really using the directory. Or are you just ignore the users home directory? Usually I got about 5 to 8 sub-directories in each Directory for a tidy system to find everything and have a good ordered system.

I would prefer her to install the games to "c:\program files\games" rather than "c:\program files" as that folder ends up getting so cluttered that I can't tell what's in there. Is there a way to change the default installation location from "c:\program files" to "c:\program files\games"? She's too lazy to change the location manually when she installs software, so it would be nice just to change the default location, but I'm not sure how to do that on Windows 7

Now windows 7 gives a short BSOD after logo and computer restarts. Startup repair doesn't fix the problem, neither from my windows 7 usb or from laptop, I have tried it several times.
I don't have any system restore created. I don't have any system image either to restore to either.
I really don't want to do a clean install again and wanted to try to do a repair upgrade, the problem is I can't boot into windows to begin with, and this seems to be needed to do a repair upgrade. When I try to do it from the USB it says I need to boot into windows first.
Is there a way to start the repair upgrade without having to boot into windows?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a computer with three partitions, the first with 100GB exclusively to Windows 7 (already installed), a partition for applications and another partition for personal files (photos, text, music, movies, etc.). I wonder how to configure the location of "My Documents", so that all users have only their personal files on drive of personal files. In Windows Explorer changed in each of the users the location of the Documents, Music, Video and Pictures.
- After changed the location of the folders above, there is still the same folders in C:users , and there are user settings that are there defined, eg Desktop, in C:Users. Is there any way to move all settings and folders to another drive?
- Is there any way to do this operation automatic? for future users I will have to repeat the same operation, how can I indicate that all future users will have their settings and documents specified in this specific drive?
I installed some applications and found that some applications did not demand that the location where it was set to be installed the application, having been installed in C:users and C:Program Files, intended that all applications (except for windows and Office) were installed in drive applications. How do I specify that this is the default drive for installation applications? Keeping the installations of Windows + Office in this drive. Applications installed by the administrator are available for all users or must be given access to other users ? How done? In the drive file, which should contain the users and shared files, meant that each user only gets access their documents and shared. Where and how can make this configuration?
Windows 7 needs to be restarted so much after installing software or anti-virus updates is that there are some system files that are in use while the computer is running and when the software needs to re-write these files it can only do so during reboots. This is why you need to re-boot a PC after software installation. Is my pal correct?

I chose BOOT MENU > USB DEVICE, it takes about 1 minute then it says "Selected device is not available - press F11 to try again and F12 for setup" I think it was like this."The files were all there, with the autorun.inf and all codes are good but how come it won't boot?
View 9 Replies View RelatedOkay so I installed Windows 7 after taking a break from the Beta. Unfortunately it didn't do what it usually does and let me boot "an older version" or anything like that. It just booted Windows 7. I read some stuff on this forum and ended up using bcdedit to try and fix it. These are the exact commands I entered:
bcdedit /create {ntldr} /d "Windows XP"
bcdedit /set {ntldr} device partition=C:
bcdedit /set {ntldr} path
tldr
bcdedit /displayorder {ntldr} /addlast
Note: C: Is where XP is. O: is where Windows 7 is.
After doing that I got a dual boot screen at start-up. When I select Windows 7 I start windows 7. When I select Windows XP it just restarts the computer and shows me the screen again.
Any suggestions? I don't know how to get back into XP now. I guess I could disable the SATA than Windows 7 is on and it would be forced to start up XP (which is on an IDE) but I really want to get this dual boot business fixed.
I would just say screw it and abandon XP for now except I password protected my files and now I can't get to them unless I transfer ownership one by one. :S
EDIT: I fixed my problem, and in an unexpected way. After I posted I was frantically trying to decide what was different this time (as I had gotten this setup to work before). I then remembered that I had set my SATA drive as the primary boot drive in the bios in my effort to get Windows 7 to work when the boot sector was corrupt. I changed it back to my IDE drive (the way it originally was) and the dual booting worked again.
I never would have thought that would be the problem. It doesn't explain other users who had the exact same problem though. I doubt very many people decided to play with the controllers in the bios.
