How To Copy Paths To Clipboard From Search Results
May 8, 2012
Under Windows XP I used a program called Piky Basket which had a right-click feature that allowed me to copy the full paths of selected files to the clipboard. This feature worked on multiple files, even in search results from e.g. Windows' own search utility and e.g. Voidtools' Everything. I want to be able to do the same in Windows 7.Sadly, Piky Basket does not work on my system (Windows 7, 64), and the version of Piky Basket that does work on my system doesn't have this feature anymore. The built-in "Copy as path" in Windows does work on multiple files, but only if those files are all in the same folder (which is not the case in search results). The same applies to SendTo Toys -- can only copy multiple paths if they're all in the same folder.
Dengdun's OpenXX works fine on search results, but copies a maximum of 15 paths (why???). Jarle Aase's CopyPath copies only one path at a time... and this applies to many of the nameless similar utilities floating about the web.Ninotech Path Copy insists on installing the 32 bit version of it (even if I remove the previous version), and does not add anything to the context menu that I can see.
I began having an issue with my laptops ATI Radeon graphics driver not working properly. It is fixed now, but the other issues I was having at the same time was not being able to view indexed files through the "search programs and files" and "windows explorer search" box. The screen goes blank or does not produce any results. Also, one of my downloaded software disk programs will not open--error. This particular program, Logos Bible software, index its files quite often. Even when I am not using the program. I also cannot change my desktop background to any picture except solid colors. I think my laptop has a corrupted file somewhere, or it is infected with malware.
I have been having an error with Java lately and I think this issue is the reason for the many Java related issues I've been having. Any effective fix, either it be reinstalling Java entirely or modifying a file. The error is as follows:
Cannot copy to the clipboard: java.security.AccessControlException, access denied ("java.awt.AWTPermission" "accessClipboard")
Can't see how to sort the results of a "Windows Search" - the search you launch from the Start button, not the search you do in Windows Explorer. I've tried menus, and right clicking everywhere.
When searching in windows 7 libraries (in pictures, music etc) the results shown are only arranged in date modified clicking on drop down menu show all other choices (top results etc) greyed out Im using windows 7 build 7601 acer aspire 5332 4gb ram
I've been having this issue for 2 days now, and it is happening on IE9, FF, and Chrome. It does not happen with every webpage I navigate to, but it sure is a lot of them. (freelancer.com and techguy.com are prime examples). Sometimes they will load. Sometimes it will show up "Web Page Not Found". Other times it'll pull up the Yahoo! Search page as if I were searching for it (which i clearly typed in Freelancer.com - Hire Freelancers & Find Freelance Jobs Online). Things I've tried so far: Resetting my router. Resetting my modem. clearing all cache and cookies on all 3 browsers. Clearing any registry errors. Running CCleaner. Flushing my DNS settings again. Nothing seems to be working. I have my internet (cable modem, running 18-20mbps) direct connected to my Playstation 3, and I have 2 desktops connected, issue does not seem to be happening with the PS3, but both desktops are experiencing the issue. Both running Windows 7 Ult 32bit OS.
When I go to start. and type something in the search box nothing comes up. If i click on see more results i get this message " Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropiate permissions to access the item." When im the administrator. It was working fine just a few days ago. Just happened.
When I switch my laptop on lots of Window Search Boxes appear, which say 'Search Results', 'To begin, type in the search box'. It doesn't happen every time I switch the laptop on just sometimes. I've had a look at the keyboard and no keys seem sticky. I've done various virus scans etc. I've also done a system restore to a few months back and still nothing.

A few days ago the search function in the Start Menu stopped working. Following instructions on a post on this site, I changed the value of an HKEY (can't recall which one any more) and it started working again. However, the results are now always incomplete. For example, I might type "ABC .xls" in the Start Menu bar to search for an Excel file called ABC. The immediate search results would be empty. However, if I click "See More Results", a window opens in Explorer and the search returns a hit.Because the search function in Explorer works fine, I think the indexing function is working properly. However, I rebuilt it anyway and the results are the same. why the search in the Start Menu produces incomplete results
I don't know why Microsoft made this so difficult in Windows 7 / Server 2008..I use the Windows Advanced search to find files containing a certain word, it pulls up a list of results... I can "select all" and I can do things like copy them to another location, but I CAN'T find a way to delete these files!!If I click the DELETE key while they are all selected, nothing happens. It's not allowing me to drag the files into the Recycle Bin.Am I missing something here? It seems that all options that are normally available when right-clicking on file(s) are present in the right-click menu (open with, send to, create shortcut, etc) EXCEPT for cut or delete.
I have followed the instructions to search for files in Windows 7 but have found the process very slow and the results bring up lots of irrelevant files. Find a file or folder. By comparison the search companion on XP was much faster and got more relevant results based on file name. If that didn't work there was the option of searching for text within the file. For example I know inside a folder there is a sub folder with the file I am looking for and I know part of the name. Is there a way to make Win 7 search for results based only on the file name? In most cases that would be a lot simpler. Otherwise win 7 will look in the contents of the file which is a time waster.
there is a file on my computer that i have to find unfortunately, it's a .jpg file if i run a search on my computer for *.jpg i'm obviously going to get a ton of files i'm trying to figure out a better way to do this if i sort the search results by folder, i can get some separation, but if i delete those folders out of my search results window, won't it delete the actual files as well?
I can create documents, or really any file, and when I try and search for it in the Windows button search (Windows 7) It will say 'No Results Found' Even when I know they are there. I can find some files, but all the ones I created return no results.I tried running the MicrosoftFixit.search.Run.exe off their site, It didn't work.
I use the windows 7 ultimate version. When i search for files on my pc using the windows explorer search, the search results show all the files even hidden files from hidden folders. How can I setup the search settings so it will not show me the hidden files from hidden folders in it's search results?
see how in this picture: http://res2.windows.microsoft.com/re...10ab536484.jpg, in the search results, if the searched word is found inside a file, a few lines of text are show with the word highlighted. i'm using windows 7 and this does not happen for me. if a word is found in file contents, i'll get it listed in the results, but it won't show me the context of it like in the picture.
I have been doing some searches using the search box that comes up when you press the colorful button on the bottom left. It finds nothing. I can have folders and WORD documents on my desktop, and it always comes up now with nothing found. If I create a test Folder, or WORD document, put on the Desktop, it won't find them. Always used to work fine. Only difference now is that I put in a new HD after the old one failed. Everything else seems to work fine.
In my case the search does not work for any user profile! From the search programs and files when I type in a command or program name here's what I get blank icons "programs, control panel, documents, Microsoft Outlook, Files" If I press on one of them I recieve a pop up saying "These files can't be opened. Your internet security settings prevented one or more files from being opened". If I press on the "search more results" then the search I'm looking for is found, which in my opinion search and indexing is working from within explorer but not from within the "search programs and files" from the start Menu. Fromm within Outlook 2010 I'm also able to locate any email easily.
Here are the list of things I tried so far. - Don't have or can't find so I couldn't delete the following key "HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerFolderTypes{EF87B4CB-F2CE-4785-8658-4CA6C63E38C6}TopViews{00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000} - Deleted indexing and created it again. - I cannot restore PC to a previous state as I do not have any restore points - Search does not work in safe mode either - search is enabled under Windows Features - Search service is running - Installed these 2 hotfixes KB2268596-x64 and Windows6.1-KB977380-x64
Something about Windows 7 that is very frustrating is that when I want to do a global search of my entire hard drive, and I type something in the search box that appears above Start logo when you click on it, it shows the results in a new window sorted by, according to Microsoft, relevance. Since I have a lot of data on my hard drive, these searches take a long time, around 2 minutes. I always need these search results to be sorted by date, so I then have to click on the "date received" column header to re-sort by date, which takes another 2 minutes or so.I really need these search results to sort by date, every time, by default, which will cut my searching time in half. There does not appear to be a setting for changing the default search results order for these types of searches (searches using the global search box above the Start logo).
If I try to search for something (that I know it is on program files, for exemple) on "C:" using the explorer search bar, it stays a long time searching and bring me back NOresults...But, if I go to program files folder, it almost bring me the result instantly
Whenever I search in Windows 7, I want to have the ability to open found folders in a new window. If I r-click, that option is not there. Is there a way to add this to Windows 7?
Also: When I go to 'open file location', the file's folder opens in the same window - highly annoying. In Vista, it opens in a new window. Anyway to change this behvior in Windows 7 to act like Vista, so the file opens in a new window?
broken "See More Results" link after search.Everything works fine from Windows Explorer, just after clicking "See More Results" i get a screenshot saying - Windows cannot find search:query= ? Make sure you typed the name correctly and then try again.I am using Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.
I regularly clean out my log files by going to Windows Explorer, selecting "computer" and typing "logs" into the search bar. The results have always shown quite a long list of logs.Lately it does not find very many logs at all such as "Internet logs,"WindowsUpdate logs" etc. I cannot understand why it has suddenly stopped displaying these logs.
I have a folder with around 2000 files in it. I want to be able to copy certain files from this folder (normally around 40) and place them in a brand new folder, I want to be able to do this with nothing more than a txt file that has all the file names I need copying in it with every file name on a separate line.I receive around 10 new txt files each day so you can imagine how tedious it is searching through 2000 files, picking out the 40 I need, times a day everyday. To make things even more complicated, the txt files I receive don't always have the correct file names in them, maybe there's a misspelling or a word or two missing for some of the names. That's ok when I'm going through picking out the files I need to copy myself because I can normally tell which file is being requested, but I can't see it being so easy for a program or whatever to do, I'm guessing it'll need to have a search feature where it picks out the most likely file.I'd like it to be as automated as possible. I receive the txt file, make sure each file name is on a separate line then a program or script or whatever goes out and picks out the files (or most likely files for the name's that aren't exact matches) and copies them into a brand new folder (which I'd like to be the same name as the text file it's using to choose the files).
There are still doubts about what the possible and legal upgrade paths are for Windows 7.
Definitions:
1) Upgrade: to move from Windows XP or Windows Vista to Windows 7.
2) Custom or Clean Install: wipes the previous installation and install Windows 7 anew. Does not preserve user files.
3) In-Place Upgrade: upgrades from specific versions of Vista to specific versions of Windows 7, preserving user files and programs.
4) Upgrade version: Windows 7 license for those who own a valid license of XP or Vista
5) Full retail version: Windows 7 license to install on any PC, independent of previous installations or ownership. Can be reinstalled on other computers (when activated the previous installation is no longer valid)
6) Full OEM version :Windows 7 license to install on one PC, independent of previous installations. Can only be re-installed on same computer and hardware setup
Upgrade paths:-
The chart below shows in what situations one can perform an in-place upgrade (e.g. from Vista Business to Windows 7 Professional) without the need to migrate files or programs, and the situations when one needs to do a Custom (Clean) Install and replace the data in the target disc. This is the case for all Windows XP owners or Windows Vista Starter. In this case you will need to migrate your personal files and reinstall your programs in a separate process.
I recommend to use Windows Easy Transfer for this, this program will organize your files per user making the migration easier.
Q.: I have a Home Premium version of Vista and want to migrate to the Professional version of Windows 7. Do I have to buy a full version?
A.: No. If you own a valid Vista license you are eligible to using an Upgrade Version of Windows 7. In this scenario you will need to do a Custom (Clean) install
Q.: I have Windows Vista Business but I don’t need all those features. I intend to migrate to Windows 7 Home Premium. I don’t want to buy the expensive Full Version to perform a version downgrade. Do I have to?
A.: No. If you own a valid Vista license you are eligible to using an Upgrade Version of Windows 7, independent of what versions you are coming from or migrating to. In this scenario you will need to perform a Custom (Clean) install
Q.: I built a computer and want to install Windows 7. I read that you can use an Upgrade disc to install on a blank hard drive. Am I allowed to do that?
A.: If you own a previous version of Vista or XP, even if it is installed in that machine or not, you are entitled to use the Upgrade version. You will need to stop using that license after installing Windows 7.
If you do not own a previous license, it is technically possible to install Windows 7 in a blank drive from the Upgrade disc, but is it not legal, it is a violation of Windows 7 EULA.

Q.: I have Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bits and want to migrate to Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bits. Do I need to do a Clean install or can I perform an in-place upgrade?
A.: A Clean Install is required when migrating from 32 to 64 bits or vice-versa, independent of the initial and target versions,.
Q.: Is there a way to perform an In-Place upgrade for situations where the upgrade path does not allow it? For example, from Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional.
A.: Yes, you can do that by changing installation files on the Windows 7 package. Only recommended for experienced users and you will be on your own, Microsoft does not support this (although it is not illegal)
Q.: The Windows XP I am running was an upgrade from Windows 2000. Am I allowed to upgrade to Windows 7?
A.: Yes. Your upgraded XP is a valid Windows License.
Q.: I am running the RC, can I upgrade that to the commercial version with an upgrade disc?
A.: Technically yes, the RC will be recognized as a previous OS and the install process will proceed. On the other hand, the RC is a free evaluation version and does not qualify as a valid license for upgrade. You need to have a valid license not to violate the EULA, even if not installed (e.g. the valid Vista or XP you had before installing the RC).

Q.: I recently bought a computer that came with Vista installed. Will I get a free upgrade to Windows 7?
A.: Please contact the manufacturer. It depends on what they were offering when you bought the computer. Here is the list of participating manufacturers, according to Microsoft: Windows:
Q.: I bought a retail version of Vista on or after June 26, 2009, I heard I can upgrade it for free, is that correct?
A.: If you acquire a qualifying Windows Vista retail packaged product between June 26, 2009 and January 31, 2010 you are eligible to receive the corresponding Microsoft Windows 7 product upgrade for the cost of shipping and handling ($9.99). Please allow 6-8 weeks (pending inventory availability).
Q.: I installed and activated the 32-bit version of Windows 7 which came in the retail box. I don’t want to use that, I want the 64-bit version. Can I remove that and install the 64-bit version and legally activate it?
A.: The key allows you to install one instance of either x86 or x64. Since you wiped the x86 you will have one other instance (tks to Garysgold for the info)
