External Hard Drive Formatted In NTFS - Suddenly Inaccessible?

Sep 20, 2009

I have an external hard drive that was formatted in NTFS on an XP machine not too long ago. It is a 160 GB Western Digital. It has been working great on windows 7 for a couple of weeks. Just today it won't let me access the drive and it is telling me that I will need to format the drive before I can use it. I have so much important data on here. I am really worried about losing it all. Why is this happening?

Files Getting Corrupted And Inaccessible

Dec 9, 2011

I have a bigger problem now... I had a lot of restarts since a unknown problem appeared (what makes my windows freeze + restart all the time). Beacuse I restart my computer each day when he freezes, i have now problems like files and folders being corrupted and inaccessible. Can't access a folder or open program. It even says that some .exe program is corrupted or web browser too... but i can open 99% of them only not 1 or 2. I think that reinstalling my win is the only way out of these many problems i have now beacuse restarting my computer each day by 2-3 times isn't a solution.

Inaccessible Partitions After Windows 7 Install

Sep 15, 2009

I have installed Windows 7 next to my old Windows XP (so it's a dualboot situation). I have 2 physical HDD's (320 GB each) and 6 logical drives (2 + 4 primary partitions, all NTFS). After installing Windows 7, two of 4 partitions in one hdd have become inaccessible - disk manager still shows them, but I can't neither set a drive letter, nor view properties. I get the following error:

"The operation failed to complete because the Disk Management console view is not up-to-date. Refresh the view by usin the refresh task. If the problem persists close the Disk Management console, then restart Disk Management or restart computer."

Both of the inaccessible partitions are fine in Windows XP. Any ideas or solutions ?

Flash Drive Inaccessible After BitLocker And XP

Nov 13, 2009

I encrypted my 4GB brand new Flash Drive with Bitlocker to Go in Windows 7 Enterprise (RC), ejected it, restarted my Windows 7 PC, and everything still worked. I tried opening it in XP and it was read-only and required my password to even look at it. That was expected. What I didn't expect, after ejecting it from the XP machine, was that it would be:

INACCESSIBLE, UNREADABLE, and IMPOSSIBLE to FORMAT after that!

No matter what PC I put it in now, I get a message saying that I must format the drive and nothing else. The drive is worthless. I when I right click in Windows 7, there is no BitLocker option. Before I throw it away, does someone know how to FIX THIS?

Shares Inaccessible By XP Until Reboot Of Win7

Jul 10, 2009

Ok, another Network problem I'm having is that the 9 shares that I have on my Windows 7 machine are shared among a small network with a couple of Vista machines, 1 Windows 7 machine and a couple of XP machines and even one Mac. Every once in a while when users on the XP machines try to use the shares, they are prompted with a username and password, and no matter what is entered they are not allowed access, even a good account and password on the Windows 7 machine.

They are told that the shares cannot be found, however they can still ping the Windows 7 machine, and they previously used the shares for days without problems. A reboot of the XP machine has no effect, however rebooting my Windows 7 (then manually readding the shares) clears it up. Again, WHY

Two os's Windows 7 64 to and from 32bit could transfer files for about a week.

Systemprofile Desktop Missing, Regedit Inaccessible?

Apr 3, 2012

When I restarted my computer after running a check of the hard drive, Igot a message that read "C:windowssystem32configsystemprofileDesktop refers to a location that isunavailable." The desktop had reverted to a default appearance and all the icons on it except for the recycle bin were gone. Under the Start Menu, the only program listed was Solitaire, though if I clicked "All Programs" at the bottom it did list them all. I read that it might be a registry issue, so I downloaded and ran "Free Windows Registry Repair", but when I restarted the computer afterwards I saw it did not fix the problem. I also read it could be an issue with "hkey_local_machinesoftwaremicrosoftwindows NTcurrentversionprofilelist". That did not come up when I ran the Registry Repair program, and I cannot get to regedit, because Run does not appear as an option when I type run in the search bar in the Start Menu.

I've run a virus scan which found 2 Trojans and a malicious software. These have been removed. Boot Selection Failed Because A Required Device Is Inaccessible?

Jul 30, 2010

I tried to bring my computer out of hibernation and was confronted with:Windows failed to start. A Recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:

1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer.

2. Choose your langugae settings, and then click next

3. Click "repair your computer."

Status: 0xc0000000e

Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessibleRecently I shrank one of the partition on the data drive in order to enlarge the other partition on the data drive. The enlarged data drive contains the folders of some installed games but the system disk is separate and was not altered in this way. I'm pretty sure that I hibernated and recovered from hibernation at least once since that change was made.Could it be that the OCZ drive has developed a fault? Or would it then be unable to even display this message? When I attempt to repair the installation using the Windows 7 disc, the operating system isn't listed. I don't think that there are any drivers for me to load - I think it's supposed to be automatic (the driver must be a part of Windows own included set).

Also I noticed that BIOS only detected one of HDDs, not SSD neither other HDD.Sometimes, Windows can be started, but it doesn't work very well. When trying to copy data from F: to an external USB, it copies for a short time and then Windows 7 becomes unresponsive. This also happens in safe mode. After several reboots, now Windows will not boot and I get the error "The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible." And the BIOS only detects the SSD.

Hard Drive Inaccessible - File Or Directory Corrupted And Unreadable

May 2, 2011

I got pop up in utorrent says a directory is corrupt, I start to run chkdsk on that drive. In this case in have drive letter E. I click on computer, then go to the drive, right click, properties, tools, check now. It says the drive is need to to forced to dismount. I click on ok. then in computers, the drive just show the letter, not size or disk meter. In the open windows on task bar, I did not see scan disk running, or maybe I accidentally closed because I was switching between several programs.

I thought restart pc the drive will show again, but after restart, the drive does not show up, it says 'E: is not accessible, the file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.' I tried to start pc 2 times, still same. I downloaded Partition Wizard Home Edition (minitool partition wizard home edition 5.2) and running it, it showing my files are still in the drive, but not accessible in windows. I also run chkdsk in recovery environment, but still says disk is corrupt, chkdsk cannot continue.

BSODs Now Boot Selection Failed Because Required Device Is Inaccessible

Jan 30, 2012

I've been getting a BSOD what seemed like once a week for the past 6 months on my laptop, which now won't even boot into windows. The first hdd was the first to go about a year ago as it is rarely even recognized anymore, so I just moved ship to the 2nd hdd which now seems to have followed suit. Before I go out and buy a new HDD a want to confirm that it is indeed the hdd and not memory, or just corrupt drivers or something simple to fix. What's wierd is that when I try to do the recovery disk option or even boot from the original win 7 cd to do a fresh install, I get no where because its so god awful slow now. I literally had to leave it sit to load into the repair disk option menu for a good 3 hours. I can't even start a fresh install of win 7 because of how slow everything is.I also can't press F8 to get into the boot selection menu to select safe mode, or last known good config etc...I updated the bios which made no difference. I opened up the laptop and disconnected and reconnected the one hdd that was easiest to get to(the other is a bitch) and nothing. I also did a scandisk on the only hdd that gets recognized and in the options it said it had a partition size of 0, but had 2 million sectors to scan which it found 0 bad sectors in.Also when it boots up now its not even half as loud as it used to be yet all the fans seem to be spinning. Why would a couple of dead hdds prevent me from booting from a disk or usb to try a fresh install?

Windows 7 Won't Start - Boot Selection Failed / Required Device Inaccessible

Apr 5, 2012

I have a pc that has been running windows 7 pro fine for a couple of years. Today it wont boot stopping with the message: "Windows failed to start.A recent hardware or software change might be the cause."

To fix the problem:
1.Insert windows installation disc and restart your computer
2.Choose your language settings and then click "next"
3.Click "repair your computer".

If you do not have this disc contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.
Status: 0xc000000e
Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible.

This machine has only one dvd drive and one hdd. I have checked the boot list in the bios settings and the cd drive is first then the hdd second. If I insert the windows 7 cd and press any key to boot from cd when prompted I still end up at the "windows failed to start " screen. At this point I have the option to select "Launch startup repair" or "start windows normally" but I cant select them, the machine just counts down and continues to try to launch startup repair and fails with the 0xc000000e error.
