External Devices Not Activating A Popup When Plugged In?
Feb 20, 2011
My Windows 7 Toshiba laptop no longer provides popups when I plug in an external device via my available USB ports, ie: my external HDD for backups, my camera memory stick to upload my photo's etc.. when I plug in I get the audio noise which confirms something has been plugged in but I no longer get a pop up to invite me to take appropriate action like start a backup or upload my photo's. This process worked fine until a few weeks ago now nothing?
I just installed a new PCI USB 2.0 card into my machine. I have a Line 6 Toneport UX8 that connects to the PC by USB as the interface for microphones and instruments. Because of the high volume of data coming down the pipe from this external interface it is pretty much a 'mandatory recommendation' to use a dedicated USB controller in a PCI slot.
Anyway, I installed the PCI card just fine but when I plug in the UX8 to it, Windows 7 reports 'USB device not recognized'. It is recognized if I plug it into one of the motherboard's USB slots though. I need to use this PCI card, otherwise the recording quality is useless. I know other people have this external interface and run it into a dedicated PCI/USB controller with great results. So I am hoping someone here can suggest what I can do to get Windows 7 to recognize the card and the USB devices plugged into it.
I'm hoping I don't have to reinstall the OS since it will be a pain to have to reinstall again when the commercial licenses come out in less than a month (I'm assuming I'll have to reinstall since I will be using an upgrade from my XP Pro that I have not used since trying out this Windows 7 RC).
My rig is ASUS Rampage iii Formula Motherboard Intel i7 960 @ 3.2 GHz stock Corsair H70 cooler 12GB of Corsair Dominator RAM EVGA GTX 570 HD 2.5GB
So I record music on my PC and have 2 guitar pedals and a synthesizer running to my computer via usb 2.0 to utilize their midi features. For some reason though when I have all of these devices on at once, one of the devices keeps disconnecting and reconnecting over and over again. I switched out the usb cable for the device and same thing.
I got a nzxt iuo1 usb expansion hub to open up some of my usb ports for future use. I don't know if this could be causing the problem because the hub itself draws its power from a psu molex header. I have the hub plugged into one of my motherboards usb headers. The hub has two flash drives and the front panel usb and card reader panels plugged into it.
On the back of my tower at the motherboards I/O port, I have these items plugged in through USB; mouse, keyboard, GNX4(guitar pedal), GR-55(guitar pedal), MO6(synthesizer), and an xbox 360 wireless reciever for gaming. Do I have more devices plugged in than Windows 7 can handle?
My computer is an Alienware M11x R1 (yes yes, gripe all you want, I like them!) running Windows 7 Premium 64 bit. Okay so since the day I got my M11x it has been freezing randomly. No one could find the source of this problem, though I seem to have located it recently...
Whenever I have an external HDD plugged in my system will completely lock up randomly. Can't move the mouse or do anything, the last sound that was playing hangs (Ie. if a song was playing the song would go kind of "zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz-" continuously), and I have to shut it off by holding the power button. It can go for a week without locking up or it can lock up two times in a single day. It also does this with some random programs that it just doesn't seem to like very much.
I just went out and bought a new HDD to see if it was a compatibility problem (the old external I was using was fairly old) and it just froze up again while using the new one...
My computer's onboard audio recently stopped working. The Realtek High Definition Audio Speakers suddenly show as "Not plugged in" in the Playback devices dialog.oinciding with this, five new devices, all "Speakers," all showing as "Ready" or one of the defaults, have appeared: WsAudio_DeviceS(1) through WsAudio_DeviceS(5).None of these WsAudio_DeviceS produce any audio when tested; I have tried this with both my speakers and some headphones. The Realtek Digital Output still appears as "Ready," which isn't useful, given that I don't have any S/PDIF devicesI have tried connecting some wireless headphones with a Bluetooth dongle I had lying around, but I couldn't get them to work very well (nor could I back when my speakers were working). Recording with a USB microphone works fine, but I haven't tried it through the onboard audio Line In jack
Whenever I plug in one of my external USB drives, Windows automatically pops up a window asking me if I want to scan it for errors. Where do I change settings so that it does not automatically do this every time.
I am running WHS but the same principal applies as 7. I have a HP N40L Server and have no problem sharing anything internal or external after it is connected following standard procedure.
My question is, is it possible to make Windows 7/WHS automatically share plug and play storage devices. The Server is over Wi-Fi and sometimes for big files it can be too slow and is easier just plugging in a HD.
Ideally 1. File is too big to rip directly to Desktop or Laptop from Server.
2. Plug in storage device to Server via any of the four USBs on the Servers front.
3. Go back to my regular Desktop or Laptop
4. Go to My Computer and notice the new drive has appeared under the Sever with my other internal shared drives
5. Drag and Drop to and from Server and Computer as I wish.
Machine came in with Vista x64. Customer wanted to upgrade to Windows 7 among other things. Upgraded their RAM, installed an HD6670 and sold 'em an OEM Windows 7 Home Prem x64. Formatted, etc, all was good.Today, customer gets ahold of me and says sound's not working. Figure they probably just muted it or something. No big. They bring the rig in.First thing I notice is that once it's on the bench, red X thru the speaker icon on the task bar saying "No speakers or headphones are plugged in." Computer's calling me a liar because I know I plugged in the speakers.Double-check. Yup. Speakers are plugged in.Pop open the Sounds in the Control Panel and notice that all of the playback devices are greyed out and "not plugged in"..what the *&^@?
6670 has HDMI playback Onboard is Realtek HD audio, which was default.
Now both playback devices were greyed out and "not plugged in".So I eventually give up and format 'em (Glad Vista and 7 make this so painless) and got a fresh OS put back on it..Same thing.
HDMI playback greyed out with "Not plugged in" Realtek HD audio greyed out with "Not plugged in"
Both devices are properly installed in the device manager with the latest drivers from ATI/Realtek Upon removal of the 6670 and, of course, the HDMI playback device, Realtek HD is still greyed out with "Not plugged in" Upon disabling of the Realtek HD and reinstallation of the HD6670, HDMI playback is still greyed out and "Not plugged in" So I think "damnit all.." and get a stand-alone USB headset.
Plug it in. Install it. "Not plugged in" Open up a PCI soundblaster. "Not plugged in"
my brother used a mac lap top and i think he formated it to beable to copy movies to my terabite. it now does not recognise it on computer ore dvd which it did before
I got a problem, my external hard drive (westen digital 1.0TB) isn't popping up my computer. I can see it in devices (USB to ATA/ATAPI bridge) but i can't acces it.What i've done already:Computer Management-> Disk Management. Than ive to initialize the disk, i can choose between MBR and GPT. In both cases i got the error: Data error (cyclic redundancy check). I can't chance any letter Downloaded different programs but non of them worked
Some of my external drive find on the PC... Windows 7 and other external drives don't.. Those shows up in the printer and devices.. How do I get them to work as a letter drive in my computer....I have bought 2 floppy drives and don't work either... everything works on my laptop.... Just so much trouble to hook everything up..
All of my Removable Storage Devices (Flash drives, External HDD) do not work with my Windows 7. When I connect them, I hear the beeps but the device sometimes show up, sometimes not and sometimes they appear after a long interval. On accessing them, Windows tell me that I need to format the drive. Well, I can't do that. It's happening with all of my removable devices, not just one. They work fine with my laptop which is Windows 7 too,
Keyboard and mouse drivers unaffected.USB Mass storage device properties messagewith driver check on:"Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device."with driver check off:Tells me drivers are corrupt or missing.Search show diver where it should be:C:\Windows\System32\drivers\usbstor.sys (also usbfilter.sys).Used the HP Recovery Manager to restore factory setting for USBStor.sys, it indicates it is successful but no changeon reboot, still cannot use flash drives, SD cards, external HDs. My cursor begins to have the little circle/disk start to run as if it is activating a program. The disk runs for about five seconds then stops and restarts again after five seconds and this continues forever. I have restarted the computer, restored from a previous point and yet the cursor still runs the little disk/circle.
I have a tower Raid system with 8 2t drives. One of the drives was bad so in Disk manager, I deleted the volume. Now, I'd like to re-add a new drive to replace that one, but Disk manger will not recognize that drive even though I can see it in device manager and I've changed the drive positions in the Raid box. Is there a way to force Disk manger to see a drive again? (same one or different drive?)
I have just added a new motherboard and processor to my pc. I reinstalled my windows 7 home premuim upgrade as a custom installed. Now, when I try to activate my windows, the activation fails.
My question is; are Windows 7 RTM retail product keys locked to a particular installation CD, or can they be used with any retail installation CD? (As long as they haven't been used before or are associated with a different edition of course).
I'm trying to setup and to activate my HP printer model hp3420 with my daghter's computer and I didn't succeed to do that. Her O.P. is Windows 7. It is working well with my computer with Windows XP. My question is if there is a posibility to activate this printer with a computer with Windows 7.
I have windows 7 installed on one computer, W2000 on the rest. I made the mistake of activating Home group, now I can no longer see my other computers.
I'm sure I'm being awfully thick, but can anyone tell me what to do to see them?
I just bought windows 7 upgrade home premium. currently my home premium machine has a lot of junk and i am wondering if i wipe everything and reinstall vista again BUT not activate it (you know "you have 30 days to activate) and upgrade windows 7 and activate the windows 7 version. Hope i explained it well....
Windows 7 has sure made this administrator account complicated. You create a default administrator account when installing Windows 7. Ok, that seems easy. Then for security and daily use you create a Standard account. Ok, only a little less obvious. But then it turns out that there is a hidden Administrator account that is disabled by default. What does that mean? Not so obvious.
Now, I had a reason to activate the hidden account. Definitely not easy until you search the forums and go through some procedures. Unfortunately, when Windows starts up, there are now three accounts showing, eg., JohnUser, JohnDefaultAdmin, Administrator.
Next step, to make the Administrator account not so obvious, is even more complicated. Figure out how to get NO accounts to show at logon. That is, revert to the old NT clt-alt-del panel where you have to enter both account name and password. (Also disable Show last logon name.) More complicated, but I got there, too.
I thought I was done. But nooooooo. Anyone who pratices safe computing by normally using a standard account knows this drill. You try to run almost any program, or download an update, etc., and you are asked for the password of an account with admin rights. What happens? You get a dialog screen that shows the name of every admin account. In this case, it would show JohnDefaultAdmin and Administrator.
I cannot find any way to enable the Administrator account and have it stay hidden in the circumstance described above.
Incidentally, the reason I needed the hidden Administrator account is that it appears to have some powers that the default administrator account does not. In my case, it was the ability to create a rescue disk without getting the widely-reported (0x80070057) error.
I recently reinstalled windows 7 through the backup OS disk. When I type in my Activation Key for Windows 7 Ultimate it says :
"A problem occured when Windows tried to activate. Error Code 0xc004f063. Description: The Software licensing Service reported that the computer BIOS is missing a required licencse"
I have been unable to connect to anything on my wired network, for about the last week. I don't remember making any changes however, I just became unable to connect.I having done a little troubleshooting.1. I can connect to the shares of my Windows Home Server if I use the IP address. The name does not resolve.2. Flushed DNS and restarting DNS server. Flushing DNS works on one client, to allow browsing by the name & restarting DNS works on the other. However neither works after a restart.3. Only my Wifi clients are experiencing this issue. My wired clients, desktops, PS3, Xbox 360, and Boxee can connect perfectly. This issue is not limited to my server. I can't connect to shares on my desktop, nor print to my wired printer. Some network background:I have DSL through CenturyLink and have a Linksys E2000 router.
c\windows\system32\hkcmd.exe pops up after every login and says "make sure you typed the name correctly and then try again."How do I remove it. How specifically do I remove it in the registry or where?
