Do I Need To Have XP Installed First To Install Win 7 ?
My school offers software at a discount for students. I'm building a new system and wanted to take advantage of this discount, but it looks like they only sell the "upgrade" version. Do I need to have XP installed first to install 7? Or can I treat it like a regular OS install?

Install Win 7 Without Losing The Programs Installed
I bought a computer with Windows 7 Build 7100 and a lot of programs on it that I don’t have the install disks for. I want to install a new OS before Win7 expires but I don't want to lose all the programs on it. Is there any way I can do this and what OS will I have to install to accomplish this.

Win 7 Install: No Files Installed In The System Folder
For the last two weeks I have been trying to install windows 7 either as a fresh install or as a upgrade from windows Vista X64I have been installing O/S's for at least 20 years and this is the first time I just can not get it to work. My configuration is as follows motherboard Super micro C2SBX cpu Q6700 video card ATI 4550 HDA adaptec 48300 but I also has a 4800 I can use and a leadtek 3200tv tuner card and 4Gb ram. I have two O/S 's installed on other drives XP X64 and Vista Business X64 I have both SAS drives and SATA drives.I have tried to install on both SAS and SATA BTW Windows Vista and XP X64 seem to work .So what happens I install Windows 7 everything works ok until it reboots then you get as far the windows picture comes together in the middle of the screen and then for about 250ms you get the BSOD now that is the first problem in 250ms I can not read the error message it is also not possible to pause it either. The other thing I noticed that their are no files installed in the system folder I thought that is strange.Question, Why does Windows XP X64 and Vista work ok but not Windows 7 this is not logical. I have tried to install on both SAS and SATA drives. This makes no difference.

Upgrade Media - Clean Install From Installed Win 7 Upgrade ?
I did an in place upgrade of Windows 7 home premium and I am thinking about trying to do a clean install since the start up time after the upgrade is brutal (about 10 minutes). My question: I know you can do a clean install using a custom install but do I have to re-install vista first or can I just boot up to my working Win 7 install, put the disk in and do a custom install?

To Install Upgrade Do I Have To Have XP Installed On Computer ?
I am thinking about taking advantage of the special pricing on Windows 7 Upgrade. To install the Upgrade do I have to have Windows XP actually installed on my computer? I have a Windows XP CD and license but do not have it actually installed anywhere. I am running Windows 7 RC on my Mac in Boot Camp and that is where I would want to install the final version but would sure hate to have to go to all the trouble of installing XP first. Another question - will we be able to upgrade RC to the final version or will we have to do a clean install?

New RTM Install, Drivers Were Installed Straight Away
This weekend - I installed Windows 7 Pro RTM Final onto a basic "office" workstation and was stunned to see that ALL of my drivers were installed straight away as part of the OS install. In the past - XP and Vista always pulled me down a path of having to install at least a half dozen specific driver for all hardware pieces - but with 7 - I was good to go. So what's the thinking? Do I really need the latest Intel chipset software? Is the 185.xx nVidia driver installed by 7 any worse than running the latest bloated pointless installer from the nVidia site? How about DirectX - in the past - I would pull down the latest End User Runtime and install that before my video drivers. Can't even find a Direct X installer for 7 right now... So - what's everyone else doing?

Windows 7 Installed In VirtualBox But Fails On Partition Install
My iso burn installs on Virtualbox, so I know it is good, but too slow.It is on a Dell Insprion 6000 with a 250g hard drive and three partitions:1. XP2. Data files3. Windows 7 (at least I'm trying to get it there)When I install from within  XP, it reboots at the 27% stage when expanding files, but it seems to keep going after the reboot. However, it gets to the end and says, "installation was unsucessful" and that is rollng back to previous editionWhen I boot directly from the DVD, it seems to start install but I get the fairly common message of:"Windows did not start correctly. A recent hardware or software change mightbe the cause.File: windowssystem32winload.exeStatus: 0xc0000001Info: The selected entry could not be loaded because the application ismissing or corrupt."Any attempt to repair the installation meets with failure as well.Any idea what to try next?

Installed Win 7 On Wrong Drive Do-over?
So I've decided that I want to use a Western Digital VelociRaptor 150GB for my Win 7 OS C-drive and my WD 500GB drive as my E-drive for files. The problem is that I thought of this after installing it on the 500GB drive. Will it be okay to reinstall on the new drive if I delete Win 7 on the old one? If so, is it pretty simple to reformat a drive with an OS on it?

Can XP Mode See Programs That Were Installed Under Win 7 ?
I installed adobe reader, microsoft office, etc. while in Windows 7, but I utilize XP mode for most of my work (the programs that I use most often are only functional in XP).  But, while I'm working in XP mode, I can't open .pdf files or Word Documents or Excel Spreadsheets. Can XP Mode not see that I have the programs installed? Do I have to re-install Office and Adobe while running XP mode so that XP mode can use the programs?

Installed Win 7 With Old Video Card
I installed Windows 7 just fine. The video card on that computer is old, a Radeon 8500. No drivers exist for Vista or Windows 7. Windows 7 used the default VGA drivers. I purchased a new video card, a GeForce 6600, which has Windows 7 driver support. I installed the new video card. The bios screen comes up and post, then it goes to the "starting windows screen", then the computer reboots back to the bios screen. Any ideas what may be wrong?

I have found guide for dual booting Windows 7 with XP or Vista already installed, but not the other way around. I allocated some free space from my C drive for the XP install. I installed XP, but when I restarted my computer, I got this error, "A disk read error has occurred; press Ctrl-Alt-Del to restart dual boot". What am I doing wrong?

Can Win 7 Be Installed TO A USB Hard Drive ?
1. I have read through many threads here and have not truly found anything useful. The closest things I have found were installing to an internal disk as a VHD, and then migrating to a USB HDD and modifing some settings; or connecting the HDD via eSATA.DO YOU NOT THINK THAT PEOPLE MIGHT WANT TO INSTALL TO USB BECAUSE THEY DON'T HAVE THE ABILITY TO DO THE OBVIOUS!! 2. I have a netbook (Dell Mini9). I don't have eSATA, nor am I willing to spend the money on a large enough half mini-PCIe SSD to install via VHD. If my internal HDD was large enough to install one OS, then the VHD, I would either dual boot, or just install the OS on the internal drive. 3. The problem with the half mini-PCIe SSDs is that the Sequential Read/Write Access 40MB/sec / 15MB/sec respectively. With a 7200rpm USB drive, I should get about the same performance, slightly less on the read, but slightly better on the write, and balancing out the read/write times would make lag less noticeable. 4. If you answer the question with "it should theoretically install" or "it depends on your BIOS settings" or "just take out your internal hard drive" then you need to stop posting. If you have not tried to perform this task, then you probably don't have much of an informed opinion of this. We aren't looking for it should, we are looking HOW. Please understand what the question is before posting. The question is "Can Windows 7 be installed TO a USB Hard Drive? If so, how?" There are plenty of posts on installing FROM a USB drive.

No Audio In Win 7 RC 64bit W/ New RAM Installed
Installed 2 - 2G ddr2 800Mhz dual channel RAM in. Then audio stopped working in 64 bit. It says no audio device. Also the sometimes went white on boot or shutdown. The RAM was seen and used by Windows 7 64bit. I'm dual booting on the same machine w/ Win 7 RC 32 bit and there are no problems w/ these in althought it can only use 3.25 G of the total 6 G. With these 2G sticks out 64 bit has no problems. I tried only the new RAM w/ none of the old and even only 1 of the 2 in. Same prob in 64 every time. Is there something I can do so I can use this RAM. They're ADATA DDR2 800 Mhz 2G the old ones are ADATA DDR2 800Mhz 1G.

Can I Setup Up Hardware RAID 0 After WIN 7 Is Installed ?
Installed WIN7 x64 with my SATA drives in IDE mode. When I tried to setup 4 storage drives(seagate 7200.12 500gb)in 2 raid 0 configurations in BIOS, the BIOS allows a change to RAID for storage mode and after f10 goes to a configuration screen briefly but can't be altered before it tries to start win7. OS would no longer boot and windows would try to repair itself. I have to reboot and switch back to IDE mode in BIOS before it will reboot. I see now you should set this up before hand. I know I can switch to AHCI per this article without starting over http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922976. 1. Is this an apples and oranges problem of setup?2. Can I do something similar to get the harware RAID enabled? My goal is hardware RAID because it seems to be slightly faster and less burden on cpu. System if for HD video editing and will need all the CPU cycles it can get.Any suggestions would be good. It took hours to get all my wireless adapter to show up and connect to the internet succesfully and I'm not sure I could get it to work again.

Hard Drive Problem After Win 7 Installed
I installed the Windows 7 release candidate, reformatted the hard drive during installation. After installation, all was good. I shut down the computer for the night, and the next morning, it wouldn't boot. Tried to reinstall, and I was informed the hard drive was corrupt! Damn. This is really testing my interest in wanting to upgrade to Win 7 already!

Win 7 Complete Upgrade From Pre Installed Vista

I did create recovery disks but i don't think they are working correctly as when i put them in on a boot up it says windows is loading files but stops half way. So my question is, if i ever need or want to go back to my preinstalled vista could i and how would i perform this step. I still have my recovery partition and i have not messed with that. But i cannot see my recovery partition in windows 7 but i know its there as the memory is not available.

Does XP Have To Be Installed And Activated On Pc Prior To Installing Win 7 Upgrade ?
Does XP have to be installed and activated on the computer prior to installing the win 7 upgrade. If that's the case, what happens if sometime in the future a drive crashes and you have to re-install and you've no longer have a copy of XP on your computer? I currently have XP installed on a raid ) configuration that I want to eliminate during the inastallation if possible. Will I need to change my bios settings to IDE or ACHI and reinstall XP prior to the Win 7 upgrade. I'm currently running Win 7 RC 64 bit with no problem.

Create A Seamless Shortcut Into Win7 For Already Installed Programs On Win XP
Three scenarios: Scenario 1: A clean install of Windows XP for Windows 7: How can I create a "seamless" shortcut of WinXP applications - such as IE onto my Win 7 installation? Only newly installed applications on winxp "seamless" shortcut is created on Win7.Scenario 2: I would like to use and existing WinXP VHD created from VPC 2007 onto my Win7 PC. I am able to run the virtual machine - but is there any way to create "Seamless" shortcuts for already installed applications in this VHD onto my win7 desktop.Scenario 3: I would like to flatten and rebuild my Win 7 installation or move to another Win 7 machine.. Can the seamless shortcuts created in my Win7 be copied over to the new Win7 machine and still work? Or will the shortcuts cease to work?
