My school offers software at a discount for students. I'm building a new system and wanted to take advantage of this discount, but it looks like they only sell the "upgrade" version. Do I need to have XP installed first to install 7? Or can I treat it like a regular OS install?

When I try to install XP, with 7 already installed, no partition is displayed. The only thing displayed is my external hard disk (though not when I unplug it) , when it lists a bunch of unnamed, empty disks.I have a 10gb partition listed as O and named XP Disk that shows up in win 7,but not when isntalling XP
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an ASUS G73 laptop and have installed an OCZ 240GB SSD drive. The laptop currently has Windows 7 Home premium 64 on it on the original drive. I would like to install a new Windows 7 Professional 64 version on the new drive and be able to dual boot. I have formatted the new drive and it is recognized in My Computer and I can save files on it.When i tried to install 7 Pro, it would not show the new drive as an option to install on. I tried this by inserting the disc in the DVD drive and by rebooting with the DVD in the drive. I also took the original drive out of it's bay and tried to reboot and could not get it to install. I then moved the new drive to the original drive's bay and rebooted and could not get it to install.When you all finish giggling about all the stuff I went through, could you post a guide on what I can do to get it to install?
View 3 Replies View RelatedThis weekend - I installed Windows 7 Pro RTM Final onto a basic "office" workstation and was stunned to see that ALL of my drivers were installed straight away as part of the OS install.
In the past - XP and Vista always pulled me down a path of having to install at least a half dozen specific driver for all hardware pieces - but with 7 - I was good to go.
So what's the thinking? Do I really need the latest Intel chipset software? Is the 185.xx nVidia driver installed by 7 any worse than running the latest bloated pointless installer from the nVidia site? How about DirectX - in the past - I would pull down the latest End User Runtime and install that before my video drivers. Can't even find a Direct X installer for 7 right now...
So - what's everyone else doing?
I'm re-installing Windows 7 on an Acer Laptop. This is not my laptop but a friend of my friend's laptop. The Windows 7 installed on the PC is a cracked version namely Windows 7 Eternity. It was installed by some other guy I don't know. The usb port are not functioning but are working. I plugged in my flashdrive and there is no sign of life but when I enter the bios it shows the flashdrive meaning that it works fine but when Window boots up it shows no life. Indicating a problem with Windows. I've tried everything to fix the ports but the last option is to re-install the OS.
He has giving me a disc with Windows Eternity which the guy give him to install but I'm going to install the OEM instead of this cracked pirate copy. To check if the OEM partition is still intact I've installed the cracked copy and used Diskpart.The OEM partition is still there. I've used the disc to format the drive and then rebooted pressed ALT & tapped the F10 key but I don't get the options to re-install OS. What do I do now? other than just installing the cracked copy. So then I thought, that maybe I can't install the RAID drivers from within the OS. So I caused the BSOD on purpose once again, and then with ICH10R RAID activated and Samsung hard disks attached, I choose the Windows 7 Recovery mode in the boot menu. It sees some problem(s), tries to repair, does not succeed and does not ask for drivers (which I put on a USB stick) to install. I also tried to use the command-line in the recovery: "rundll32 syssetup, SetupInfObjectInstallAction DefaultInstall 128 iaStor.inf" but it gave "Installation failed."
So I'm clueless how should I proceed. Do I really need to re-install Windows 7 and load RAID drivers in the Win7 setup? I don't want to install any OS on the RAID, the Windows 7 is and will be on the SSD. I just want to have a RAID-1 backup using those two hard disks.

Just found out Win 7 SP1 was not auto-installed in a netbook and a home PC today, even though both machines were set up to auto-update. The SP1 was sitting in the Windows update notification. Is this normal?Also after manually installing SP1 (i.e. click OK in Windows update), some old updates started to pop up and asked to be installed. I suppose they were for the SP1. Is this normal?

View 3 Replies View RelatedEvery now and then my WiFi stops working, and if I go to dev mgr, the General tab tells me that "No drivers are installed for this device" for device status. On the other tabs, however, I have all the details on the installed driver, and if I ask Windows to update the driver, it tells me that the best driver is already installed. The problem is solved by rebooting, but I find that annoying. I'd like to figure out WHY it does that. I've saved earlier versions of that particular driver from over the last three years, and the problem occurs with all of the drivers. This is a Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit system. The driver is an Intel driver; the one installed at this moment (it just happened again, and I have not rebooted, since I had a powerline enet outlet handy), and the version of the Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100 AGN is 14.3.1. I have other versions of that driver saved, from 13.2.1.5 to 15.1.1_Ds64. I had reverted to the 14.3.1 because the more recent versions seemed to be worse about the driver disabling itself or whatever it is doing.Coincidentally with this, the event viewer shows that mmc.exe was terminated because it was hanging. I had just run sfc yesterday, and there are no corrupt files that Windows cannot fix, and there weren't even any corrupt files that it DID fix.

I put the new sticks in the original slots and moved the old ones over so it is not an issue of installationI ran CPU-Z and all four sticks show up in the SPD tab but the 2 new ones only have values in the timings table under JEDEC #1, the 2 old ones have JEDEC #1, 2, and 3.

I just built me a new computer. I installed Win7 Ultimate. Everything is running pretty good. I went to look at the stats for my system and noticed the RAM. Windows sees the 8 gig that is in stalled but Im unsure why its only using 3 gigs.
Running Window 7 Starter. I logged off. It says,do not power off or unplug your machine. Installing 1 of 69 updates. It has been like that all day,nothing installs. Need help with this problem.
