I do this and it goes over and over and over again. if I can restart it to normal I get to own the computer. It is an acer aspire 5750G, windows 7. I cannot get it in safe mode because the error pops up! The computer has been overheated alot, as it turns off pretty quickly!!

My friend just called me up with the error in the topic title, that happened on his Lenovo G550.I've searched for a solution, but all I've seen is "run a data recovery" or "reinstall Windows 7" type of answers.I wouldn't be comfortable opening his computer up.I'm not sure how I would run recovery mode in BIOS or run a simple check for all the Windows 7 necessary files as it doesn't even boot up. (The error shows and that's about as far as it goes, except for BIOS).

I turned my computer on today. When I checked it some time later, I had an error of messages saying lots of files (mostly .dll) could not be found (or something along those lines). Explorer.exe kept crashing, before a constant bombardment of similar messages came up. After a while, clicking ok to all of them, the computer froze. When I tried restarting, I got the message "A disk read error occurred Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to restart"

I turned on my computer today to play a few games and it started to lag like crazy and eventually freeze. So I just turned off the monitor and went somewhere. 3-4 hours later, I came back to discover a message on my screen. It said "A disk read error occured. Please press Crtl+Alt+Del to restart."I did this a few times and the now I'm at a screen with the title of "msi mainboard". Part of the screen is cut off so yeah...
Initializing USB Controllers .. Done.
*096MB OK
USB Device(s) : 1 keyboard, 1 mouse
Auto-Detecting IDE Master .. ATAPI CDROM
Auto-Detecting IDE Slave... ATAPI CDROM
Auto-Detecting SATA1 .. Hard Disk
[code]....
Anyways, after typing all that, I pressed F1 and it brought me to a Windows XP loading screen (must've booted from my hard drive that has WinXP) but now it's stuck on a black screen.

I am working on a MSI CR620 laptop that is running Win 7 HP x64. On start up it says to press F3 for recovery, I have done that and have gone through the recovery, getting the post that windows has been installed completely, and to press ok to restart, after pressing okay, the computer restarts and I get the "Disk read error, press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart again. I have ordered a recovery disk from the manufacturer, but I don't have warm fuzzys that it will correct the issue.

I had Vista 64x and Windows 7 build 7057 set up in a dual boot with Windows 7 on a 30Gb partition.
Acting on advice in another thread I decide to shrink my Vista partition and expand my Windows 7 partition using GParted.
That seemed to go ok and I shrank Vista partition to about 400GB and expanded the Windows 7 partition to about a 100GB.
However, I now cannot boot at all. When I try I get "A disk read error occurred. press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart".
When I try this nothing happens and I have to do a power shutdown.
I have attempted repairs using my Vista disk and that tells me nothing is wrong. Likewise I tried repair with my Windows 7 disk with the same result. Both tell me that the system booted succesfully.
I then tried reinstalling both Vista and Windows 7 to their respective partitions and I still get no boot and a Disk read error message.
I have been in the BIOS and tried every boot device option but still nowhere.
I'm writing this from the Asus Splashtop OS that came with my mobo. I thought it was a bit of a gimmick but it might just save me now!

The laptop is an HP Mini 1000 running Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit. It was working fine and I turned it on today and the message: "A disk read error has ocurred Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to restart" appeared on the screen. Pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del just reboots but the same message appears again. F8 won't get me anywhere. Only F9 (Boot Device Order) and F10 (BIOS settings) are available but don't fix anything. There is no way to make it boot or even get to a repair screen or past it. Any suggestions to make it boot so at least I can get to the data and back it up?

So, about 2 weeks or so ago my PC was working perfect, no issues whatsoever. Then about 2 - 3 days after I went on my PC and things just froze up, I couldn't shut down properly because it was just stuck froze. So I shut down using the button, but when I turned it back on I got "Disk Read Error Occurred". So I left my PC off for a while and it worked again after a few restarts, but it seems to keep coming back, my PC also sometimes freezes up.

I tried to make a small 7gb partition on a separate drive and it worked fine. I had already had this drive which is a 1tb drive partitioned as follows: 500bg and 500gb. So I booted using my xp disk and it part. and when it restarted I got the following: "a disk read error occurred. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart".
Now I can't install xp because it won't find the 7gb partition on restart and I no longer can boot into Windows 7. I tried running Windows 7 startup repair but it says:
"startup repair cannot repair this computer automatically."
The first line of the problem signature is StartupRepairOffline.
I need your help please help me fix this.

TLDR: I get the "A disk read error occurred" error but the system disk is readable and checks OK in the recovery USB. So, I have two hard drives--a terabyte drive with some data on it and a smaller drive with the Windows 7 installation on it--and a USB drive. I made the USB drive into a recovery USB using the instructions here Installing Windows 7 System Recovery into USB Flash Drive | Raymond.CC Blog with the addendum found in the comments. I made a system image of the smaller drive via the control panel and then put the image in the terabyte drive. I then replaced my smaller hard drive with a new drive of a comparable size.In order to restore the drive, I booted into the recovery USB, formatted the new hard drive with ntfs, made it active, and ran wbadmin start recovery -version:xxx -items:C: -itemtype:Volume -backupTarget:C: -recoveryTarget: where C was the terabyte drive and D is the new drive. I may have the drives mixed up here, but I assure you I had them correct when I actually ran the command
After a reset, I got some generic error so I went back into the bios, and set the new drive to be at the top of all boot lists, and then rebooted. It was at this time I got the above error. I feared that my drive was actually DOA, so I booted back into the recovery. I did a D:;dir and saw that all of my old files did indeed exist, so I figure it was a boot issue. I ran the boot repair utility in the recovery menu and it said there were no errors and I should restart. I didn't restart, and instead ran a chkdsk D: /f and found no errors. I did a bootsect /nt60 /all /mbr and restarted and still nothing changed. I even tried a "bcdedit /timeout 10" and I do not see the boot loader before getting this error. Not sure if that is expected or not but I'll throw that in here.

Few days ago I install a Windows 7 on my HP Pavilion dv6000. It was ok for the first two days then started to get a message saying their is an error in system 32, and wants me to run f something utility (cant remember what it was). One night the computer was running fine, and shut down fine. When I start it up the next morning on boot I got a black scream message saying "disk read error occurred press ctrl+alt+del to restart" Doesn't help when I restart it. Then I burn a trail version of windows 7 onto a dvd from Microsoft website, and tried to reinstall windows during boot by pressing F9, selecting boot from dvd, but end up back at the same error message. I spend hours reading all over the net about this problem, and realize it could be one out of many problems. only understand about half the stuff I read

Computer is a Sony Vaio VGC-RC110G (not sure about motherboard). About 3 weeks ago computer starts refusing to boot giving errors that make me think the hard drive is bad. Computer will still occasionally boot after 5-10 tries. I bought a new hard drive and tried to create an image of the old drive onto the new using Clonezilla, the process gave a few errors. The computer flatly refused to boot from the new drive (gave disk read errors). However, when I could boot using the old drive, I could get in and explore the image of the new drive and the image copy process seemed to have worked okay.
As part of the disk image copy process, my new drive had 2 partitions and about 900 megs of free space. The two partitions were the main windows partition from the old drive and the recovery partition. I combined all partitions and formatted the new drive (using Gparted) because I thought that the disk image copy probably just recreated errors in the old drive onto the new. After the format, my computer then consistently refused to boot from either drive. (in the past I could boot to the old drive after a couple of tries). The error was usually "a disk read error occurred' or "BOOTMGR is missing."
Attempts to install windows using windows install DVD failed because computer couldn't write to the new hard drive. Both hard drives would usually appear in bios when I entered into it (I know at least one time where neither appeared in the bios), although sometimes computer would fail allow me to edit bios altogether. I attached the new hard drive to a different computer and installed a clean version of windows 7 Ultimate x86 to the new drive. The different computer boots just fine from the new hard drive. But when I move the new hard drive to back to the old computer I consistently now get "a disk read error occurred" error.
I don't believe it is a SATA cable issue because power to drive seems to be fine and I had to use the SATA cable from the old computer when hooking the drive up to the different and it worked fine. Also, Gparted recognizes the drive just fine and has no problems formatting partitions etc., so there is communication happening through the SATA cable and the power cable is powering adequately.TL;DR summary: New hard drive works fine with new computer, but old computer (when connected to same new hard drive) gives me a "disk read error occurred." Based on the evidence, I don't think it's a faulty drive issue. I'm also skeptical that it's a cable issue, but haven't 100% ruled out this possibility. What should I do next in terms of identifying the problem? I've currently exhausted my (admittedly limited) hardware troubleshooting .expertise.

I have an Acer Aspire 5732Z here. A friend of mine had a disk in the disk drive and said that he opened the tray and the disk was no longer there, but actually inside the laptop. He managed to get the disk out but it went fully into the laptop. He did all of this while the laptop was still turned on. I dunno whether it turned off itself or he turned it off after that, but now it constantly comes up with A disk error has occured press ctrl + alt + del to restart on boot upI have downloaded ubuntu and placed it on a disk, and booted the disk up using F12, it goes to a purple screen for a bit, then goes to a black screen and doesn't do anything else

So far, there isn't any results from the attempts I have made to repair or boot the machine, including booting into command console to repair. It shows there is no operating system present.

I'm getting this every time I boot up my computer. It happened after I had my computer on "sleep". When I woke up and tried to open my laptop, it shut off and showed me this:
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1. Insert your Windows installation disc an restart your computer.
2. Choose your language settings, and then click "Next."
3. Click "Repair your computer."
If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.
File: BootBCD
Status: 0xc0000001
Info: An error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data.
It simply takes me to the same screen when I hold "F8". So I cannot get the "Repair your computer." Option. I do not have the windows installation disc. Also, all I can do is basically start up my computer and it takes me to that screen every time.

Im running windows 7.It requests for the windows recovery CD to be inserted, so when I put the CD in to boot I get a "windows is loading files" then a starting windows with the windows logo then just a black screen with a cursor, I left it like this several times for at least an hour an nothing happened.I can't press F8 to access safe mode etc, nothing will happen.Pressing F12 to boot from CD just does the same thing as putting the CD in normally.
