I don't use desktop icons much, except for temporary files, but even so, it would be very useful for me to be able to set the default arrangement in a different fashion than seems to be available in the Desktop View Menu. I would like to have all icons arrange horizontally, starting at the top of the screen, rather than vertically, as seems to be the design. I know that I can turn off the auto arrange function and place the icons in that fashion manually, but when I reboot, some will remain horizontal, while others go back to vertical. I also know that I could turn off aligning to grids, and they probably would stay horizontal, but I would like to let that remain active for ease of arrangement.
Using x64 Ultimate SP1 here. Just tidying up my desktop and taskbar to the way I like them. Nothing too tricky here, just minimizing clutter and placing shortcuts to Adobe CS5 apps on the task bar after upgrading from CS4 to CS5. My prior desktop was a bit more cluttered with shortcuts, and the taskbar held only CS4 shortcuts pinned to the bar. After setting everything to the way I want it, saving my desktop theme, and even rebooting a few times, the desktop configuration seems static. I also created a restore point with the new desktop and taskbar arrangement included.
But, come back the next day and it's all back to the old cluttered desktop and CS4 icons pinned to the taskbar! It doesn't seem to affect my desktop wallpaper settings, though --only the dtop icons and pinned taskbar icons. Not using any 3rd party desktop managers or the like. It always seems to happen sometime during the night. When I check to see whether a Windows update has taken place, most times there hasn't been one. This has been going on now for over a week. Sure getting tired of the system restore routine just to get back to my current desktop config.
In Vista, I was able to sort files by date created, highlight the files I want, then sort again by name, and all the files I selected previously would still be highlighted, but now they're in numerical order. Win 7 won't let me apply that second level of sorting. It's either name or date, but not both.
Whenever I single left click on an icon, file, or folder a repetitive popup appears asking if I want to send whatever I clicked on to the recycle bin. The item is sent to the recycle bin regardless.
Few days ago i am able to drag and drop any icon on desktop also file to desktop, but next morning i start my laptop i was unable to drag and drop any icon on desktop also file to desktop.I tried many method but all failed.

I have a really annoying problem with desktop icons.I use 2 monitors. 1920x1200 is the main dislay and 1600x1200 is another one for extended desktop. The thing is that I don't need it all the time so I'd like to switch the extended desktop on and off when I need it. Problem is that entering the ex. desktop just somehow changes the grid (it seems that the grid becomes more compressed in vertical direction). That means that it always messes my icons up. I don't know why do the Windows change the grid when I do not change the resolution or just anything that could possibly affect the main screen.
At first I burned an audio CD by dragging mp3 files into the writer. Then discovered that the order was not what I wanted, by track number, but was alphabetical by title. Looking at the File arrangement setting I discovered it was indeed set to [artist]-[title].So I changed it to [track] and then burned another CD. But it ordered them by title again. Next, I cleared the mp3 files from CD writer and dragged them back again thinking this must be done after setting the file arrangement. But upon burning the CD, it still was alphabetically ordered by title.I checked the docs and didn't see any reference to File arrangement.
I love the windows auto arrangement function when moved to the edge of the screen, however there is one that is very annoying, that is bottom edge. I have one of my monitor in portrait mode, and sometimes I want to view two windows, one on the top and the other on the bottom. But I can not cover the all the area down the bottom because once I go near the bottom edge, Windows maximizes it. Now I know in the "Make the mouse easier to use" page, I can "prevent" it all, but I just want to disable the bottom edge and leave the top, left and right edge as the way they are. How can I do that?
How to disable this is arrangement of icons? Look at screenshot. I need normal arrangement icons like in screenshot 2(like Windows XP). PS. I need size of icons 32x32 and normal arrangement like Windows XP.
i just installed fresh windw 7 ultimte on my xp..the prob now is when i set screen resolution up to 1280x800, my desktop icon still appear too big. its not happen on my xp bfore.with tht resolution my xp screen disply bcame quiet nice,i use the same grphd crd, same monitor, but why in my wndw 7 it appear too big? use nvidia geforce4 mx440
How do I get rid of the Desktop icon when I ALT+TAB? Especially when I only have two windows/programs open and I ALT+TAB to switch.. the Desktop one just lays there. If I want the desktop i will use Windows + D.
I used Gparted to shrink the windows partition and create other partitions for a dual boot. Windows seems to be find except that disk manager does not reflect the changes, and defragmenter will not work at all?
Sometimes when I move a file to the recycle bin or to another location (drag and drop), the file has moved but the icon remains anchored in the original location and does not appear in the destination location. When I restart the computer, the files and icons appear in the destination location.
Similarly, when I download a file to the desktop, the icon does not appear untill I restart the computer.
I have a software installed and i changed the name of shortcut then i changed it back to original name, Ended up having no icon for .exe itself! When i change the name to a random name the icon appear again, I deleted IconCache.db and still have the problem.
I only have two icons on the desktop...Chrome and Recycle.I rebooted the other day...and all of a sudden there was 'Google Earth.'Rebooted earlier today...and there was "Norton Internet Security.'
I move the icon to different location but it go back to old location when I refresh desktop. I have already turned off "Auto arrange icons" but the result is the same.
I have an icon on my Win7Pro desktop that cannot be deleted, changed, or anything. I believe it was originally connected to a pdf file that I downloaded (from a reputable site) but the download was interrupted. It's file name is simply Donor.
When I try to delete it I get a flash screen that states: Could not find this item. This is no longer located (in desktop location). Verify the item's location and try again.
I cannot rename the file. It's properties shows that it is on the desktop but has 0 bytes.
I have tried about a gazillion things to no avail, including: Searched the registry for any entry that matches Donor, with nothing found. Booted into safe mode and tried from there with no luck, still won't delete. I am using full Kaspersky and a complete system sweep shows no malware, virus, etc. Found some sites that gave some script for trying to remove such files via the CMD prompt, but result always was that the file does not exist.
What i mean is, if i drag or right click a file (picture, folder or film etc) and select delete, the file goes to the recycle bin no problem, but it appears to stay on the desktop too. It is definately in the bin also, if i select the file once in the bin it wont open because windows tells me it doesnt exsist so why is the icon left behind ? its anoying to have to refresh to see it dissapear.
Also emptying the bin of the file doesnt make a difference either. Icon remains.I have ran a virus check, spyware, malware etc... PC is as clean as a whistle.
I'm trying to click the desktop icon because I inserted the game "The Sims 3 Generation" and this has become really weird , it never would cause this problem. It just started 2 months ago , i'm dying to see what it is. I keep clicking the desktop icon -- even double clicking it. It works on the rest but on the game icon it won't...
I have win 7 home prem & would like to remove desktop icons that I never use (from the desktop). These icons are: documents, libraries, control panel, my documents, desktop. I normally delete icons by right clicking on the icon & selecting "delete." However, when I do this to "my documents" it starts to delete the data not the icon. I'm now afraid to delete the any of the above because I don't want to loose the information. I tried using "personalize" from the desktop but no luck.
