When I booted up my laptop my desktop lost all its icons and a dialog box popped up saying:Location is not availableC:Users<Username>Desktop is not accessible. The directory name is invalid.I went to the C:Users<Username> directory and saw that my Desktop folder became a file...When I try to open the Desktop.. the open with dialog box came out. I tried creating a new folder with the same name (Desktop) and Windows says that a folder with the same name already exists. However when I right click on it and tried going to properties, then the Previous Versions tab.. I can actually recover my old files (1 week ago.. but I still need the current ones and of course use my desktop as well). How can I fix this T_T.

Alright, recently I've had a weird problem. My desktop has apparently.. de-synced with the Users\username\Desktop folder. It's a mild annoyance at the moment, because I'm playing with modding a few games I have, but sooner or later I'll actually need my desktop back.I can't actually move anything from the desktop itself, almost like the files aren't even on the screen. It's also not updated with the files I've added to the username\Desktop\ folder, nor with the ones I've deleted.I've tried system restore, but it didn't do anything.

I successfully moved my C:Users folder to D:Users and wanted to provide the URL that I got the instructions from so others could benefit. ( url... )It worked perfectly for me. This is the second time I've used these instructions the first being September 2010 which gave me no problems that I could find. I was able to back up my data using SyncToy and make "images" of my operating programs using Acronis True Image from a boot disk. I recovered my data and my images several times successfully.

This is my work laptop. I have my standard Music library, which is a directory directly off the C drive. When I download or move into that "Music" directory the directory I moved has a lock icon on it. In order to get rid of the icon, I need to add "Authenticated Users" to the list of groups, and then I need to take ownership of the directory under my account in order to to do anything. If this directory is in my download directory, it's fine...but as soon as I move it there the above situation arises.

Sometimes when I move directories the resulting directory needs to be modified under the security tab to add the "Authenticated Users" user in order to remove the lock icon. I've verified that I am the owner of the directory...and the other users with access to the directory is "System", My Account and "domain/Administrators".

If I click on one directory I get "Windows Explorer has stopped working". It used to be fine but crashes WE every time now. A colleague suggested right click and reset the properties, but right click causes the crash too.I can open it remotely from an XP system, and I can navigate it in a DOS box so I know the files are all still good.Disk check says "No problems".Sophos anti-virus scan finds nothing. Malwarebytes scan finds nothing.None of these crash or report corruption.

As an example, The Itunes directory is in My Music. My Music is in a Music library, so the file details in explorer include album, #, etc. Within Itunes is the Apps directory and other data where "album name" doesn't make sense. I want it to display as a non-music directory. There doesn't seem to be any way to set the default columns displayed in a directory within a Music Library without changing how all the directories are displayed. Nor does there seem to be a way to remove a Music Library sub-directory from being considered as a Music Library member.

set up usernames on my new computer, with me "John" as having admin privledges. However, when I go into Windows Explorer, cusers, my folder name is "New", instead of "John". Why is this? When I go into other usernames, my folder also shows up as "New". The other users have their own names on their accounts.I went into Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Local Users and Groups, Users, and changed my Name from New to John, but that did not fix the problem.I know this probably isn't serious, but it's a bit of nuisance. Does anyone know how to fix it?

I just installed a new 64 gig SSD in my computer. I also have a 2T secondary hard drive. The SSD is not big enough to contain all the stuff that will eventually be in "My documents",i.e. under "users" so I need to move the users directory to my secondary hard drive but havewindows behave as it were in its original location.I did some research and found the following technique which seemed plausible (and several people said it worked for them)
1. Install windows normally.
2. After install, boot from installation disk.
3. Get into the command prompt by clicking "repair".
4. Use robocopy to copy c:users to d:users. The command line should be: robocopy c:users d:users /mir /xj /copyall
5. Verify all files copied successfully.
6. Delete c:users. Command line should be: rmdir /s /q c:users
7. Delete c:documents and settings. Command line should be: rmdir "c:documents and settings"
8. Create junction to new users directory. Command line should be: mklink /j c:users d:users
9. Create junction for the old "documents and settings". Command line should be: mkdir /j "c:documents and settings" d:users
10. Restart computer.
Note:When in recovery mode the disk drives end up with different drive letters than what the normally have.Consequently my SSD drive which is "C" became "E" and my hard drive which is "D" became "C". Confusing, but I adjusted the above commands to reflect this. All seemed to go well until I rebooted. The computer booted up fine, but when I entered my password to log in windows complained that it could not find my profile. Since I could not log in at all I was forced to re-install windows. Supposedly, this is doable and I NEED to do it asap as my SSD will not hold all the stuff that will eventually be in "users".

I am cleaning a laptop out and i created a brand new user name. I deleted the other 2 users using the control passwords2.
So the machine starts and i select the user. Process usage is very high and it says 50, but actual user shows about 9. I click show processes from all users and i find the culprit as well as 50 processes. I deleted the users so there shouldnt be that option.
Why is there more processes if this is the only user, why does it even have the option?

I will if I have to manually delete them, although I'm not sure what other files may still be around on my drive that are located in Users/All Users that are redundant any recommended programs that I could depend on for this task ?

My father replaced his Windows 98 machine with a new computer running Windows 7.He's currently on 32-bit ultimate, but we could change versions if needed. He's really hoping there's some way to force Windows 7 into a single user mode, primarily so C:usersAll Users, Default User, Public, and his own user are merged into one. It's absolutely driving him nuts the way it is.

I have a dell inspiron with Windows 7 that I got from Walmart for christmas. It came with a walmart adminstrative account, a guest account, and another user account. I Changed the administrator username And password, kept the guest one, And deleted the third account--- all through the Walmart admin account. When I restarted my computer however, both the walmart admin And guest account were gone and only the third account with a required password (which I do not know) and a blank user account that requires a password remained.
There is no open guest account. I Tried to use the previous walmart username password And the new one I created and neither work. Now I am locked out of my own laptop. I tried booting in safe mode but I still needed the aforementioned password..perhaps I did it incorrectly?
I would like to solve this without having to reinstall windows 7 os (but would like to know how to do that just in case). Let me know if any other information is needed in your assessment.

I have added an SSD drive which contains operating system and programs. I used Paragon to migrate my old C drive to the new SSD. I can boot from the SSD (wow is it fast). But when I use my old username to log on (Dick) it logs me on as a temporary user. I have done the registry thing by erasing the BAK at the end of the profile but it does not work. I have created a new user name (Dick_New) and that works, but, of course I am having to recreate everything, and all of my links are broken, eg., my many plugins in Photoshop and Lightroom. Almost as bad as doing a clean install (which perhaps I should have done).
My question. Can I just copy my "Dick" user profile from my new F Drive (old C) onto the new SSD. Or perhaps, just overwrite the new profile with the old? With Photoshop and LR when I activate a plugin, it tells me I have to reenter the license info to activate. When I do that I am told that I cannot do it because possibly there is another copy already running. I am going to call Nik later this morning when they open, but I am hoping that someone here has the answer to this question also. Of course, if I can log on using my old profile, this would become mootech Support Guy System Info Utility version 1.0.0.2OS Version: Microsoft Windows[CODE]

I really didn't know the best title for this problem. I have a problem with my girlfriends laptop, where she can't install any MSI files, due to a "The file cannot be opened" error, or something to that effect. After looking in the Permissions settings for the MSI file in question, I noticed something in the Security tab, under User Names. Where it's supposed to say Miss Ghoul (STEPHANIE-PCMiss Ghoul), it actually says... Miss Ghoul (STEPHANIE-PC"). There are " where Miss Ghoul should be. I tried for ages to find out how to change this, but because she's running Windows 7 Home Premium, I have no Group Policy editor (if it even helps to have it). Is there any way to force change the " to say what it's supposed to say? And could this have an efect on her ability to install MSI files?

Win 7 Pro x64. I've used a little app that you might know called 'IP Messenger for Win' (Open Source LAN Messenger / Chat application). It works well but with the latest version I'm getting a strange sequence of numbers appended to my Username (as per screenshot). It's not easy to get support on the product so thought I'd try here to see if someone recognises the issue and, no, it seems to have nothing to do with the 'machine name / description' - I've changed those (and back) to test. My Windows username is 'Jem' (which I've also tried changing). The rest is self explanatory - the other two users in the shot are Vista and XP.

I have a laptop with a company that uses a domain server. There are no local accounts on the company laptops, but you can still log in using previous credentiails. My problem:When I log in without the domain present (Example: Network cable unplugged) to get on the company wireless or VPN from home, the %USERNAME% variable is set to upper case. This wouldn't be a huge issue, except that some programs/scripts rely on the username variable being lowercase. My question: Is there a way to force the username lowercase, when logging in to a system without the domain present?

I have four computer networked all using Win 7 Pro or Ultimate. I set up the network as prompted and set th user name and password. All computers are new to newer Dell running 64bit. Went to setup my HP Media Smart 6TB Server and everything just fine. After all setup everything worked off-line until I wanted to access the server. A Windows Security window opens requesting Network Password and User Name to connect to the HP Server. Well nothing I input does any good ALL my entries are rejected.
This is a total f.. k up as I know what I used for the main network and what I used for the HP Server but neither work. I have tried about everything I can think of and am still locked out. All else fails complete rest and reboot but just wondering if same problem someone else might have seen for answer.
