Cannot Boot From CD, Code 5?
Feb 28, 2011
I'm sorry if this is a duplicate post, but honestly, I did Search for "Code 5" and found nothing.I have a HD on an eight year old desktop PC that had an early beta version of Win-7 on it.That old version has already expired.I wanted to boot up with my Windows 7 Ultimate DVD and just do an overlay install.Well, every time I tried to boot the PC from the DVD drive, I got the dreded "Cannot Boot From CD, Code 5" error message. Of course I Googled the problem and found only one fix that I was able to execute. The fix involves running the Setup on the Win-7 DVD from within an earlier version of Windows. The suggested version was Viata, but since I already had an early version of Win-7 on there, I tried that. So far so good.
The Setup program informed me that it would put the old OS in a folder called Windows.OLD.I guess that's OK, because I can always delete that later. Eh?This OLD computer may not run Windows 7 Ultimate very well at all, but at least I found a "Work Around" for that nasty Code 5 error message.+ Win-7 did get the sound working and set up my wireless N card with no problem. But it doesn't seem to know exactly what to do with my 8 (or maybe 9) year old video card.I can live with 800x600 resolution, for now. It does have one higher res., but the on-screen text is almost unreadable. But for a testing machine, this one is working pretty well

I cannot boot into Windows because it says that the file /boot/BCD is missing with an error code of 0x0000007. If I run Repair from my installation disk and in System Recovery Options, it says that it has detected problems and asks if I want to repair it. The items it wants to repair are: " The following startup option will be repaired:Name: {bootmgr}Identifier: {9DEA862C-5CDD-4E70-ACC1-F32B344D4795}
The following startup options will be added:
Name: Windows 7 Ultimate (recovered)
Path: Windows
Windows Device: Partition=C: (476938MB)
Name: Windows Recovery Environment (recovered)
Path: Recovery9426aa67-30ff-11e0-a348-506313b5e718Winre.wim
Windows Device: Partition=C: (476938MB)
A copy of the current boot configuration data will be saved as C:BootBCD.Backup.0002"If I click yes, it says that it cannot save the current settings for the BCD and refuses to continue. When I choose Startup Repair, it attempts to fix the problem but fails.
The problem details are:
Root cause found:
No OS files found on disk.
Repair action: Partition table repair
Result: Failed. Error code: 0x3bc3
I think that this is because Startup Repair is trying to fix the thumbdrive that I keep my Windows 7 install files in. I am overseas now and as my computer does not have an internal optical disk drive and my external drive is back home, thus using my thumbdrive is the only way to access the repair console.
I tried running a few commands, namely:
bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /rebuildbcd
Fixmbr and fixboot work, but when I run RebuildBCD, it detects C:Windows as having a Windows installation, but if I type Y(yes) or A(all), it says that the requested system device cannot be found.

I'm currently running Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit on a four year old Compaq Presario C762NR laptop and I'm having some trouble reformatting.
This laptop originally came with Vista, and I updated to Windows 7 about a year ago. It's gotten a bit slower so I decided to reformat it but lost my CD so I decided to borrow my friends. However, once I insert it and restart my computer and have it boot from the disk, it shows an error: "Cannot boot from CD - Code 5"
I tried googling around and apparently this is a problem with older computers. Does anyone know a work around so that I can reformat it? The CD works normally if I open it while on my current OS and shows the option to upgrade/custom install, but since I want to reformat I need to somehow get it to boot via the disk. [URL] However, I don't have my vista disk so I decided to try the vLite solution the author talked about. However, I'm a little confused on how I would make a new iso using the boot.bin instead of extracting it from the cd like how he shows.

My Friend just bought his first computer, and he cant install Windows 7. So right now he has no operation system. We have tested installing it with a regular DVD, that worked on my computer, but not on his. It just says: Cannot boot from CD-ROM. And we have also tried to use USB. When we used the USB the computer said something like: please restart and select proper boot device. Even when I'v fixed the boot's. So right now i have no idea what to do. And he has a: MSI P67A-C43 REV B3 as mother-card, Intel Core i5 2500 3,3GHz as processor , Corsair CX 600W V2 80+ as his Power Supply, Optiarc AD-7260S DVDRW Svart SATA, OEM, as the DVD reader. He also has 4 GB in RAM, don't remember which. And 1 TB in hard drive.

Made the leap to Windows7 x64 and need to tap the collective knowledge base.
I'm currently triple booting Windows7 x64, Windows 7 RC1 and XP Pro using the BIOS (all on separate HDs).
As Windows 7 RC is set to cease functioning soon, can I install Windows7 x32 on the same machine as Windows7 x64? My concern is with the licensing and whether I will receive updates for both x32 and x64. I'd heard that you will only receive automatic updates on the most recently installed version. Can anyone confirm this? This wouldn't be the end of the world, but having just finished installing all of my applications in x64, it would be a major inconvenience. If it does effect the auto updates, can those updates be downloaded manually?
I saw this thread, but I'm guessing it's installing the same version (x64 & x64 or x32 & x32)
Dual Boot Win 7 & Win 7
I've grown to appreciate a dual/ multi -boot machine. It allows me to test software trials and decide whether I like them before purchasing and installing them on my main OS (Windows 7 x64). This keeps the registry for Windows 7 x64 cleaner and I don't have to worry about residual registry entries or files after uninstalling. It's a fantastic way to test things out.
Additionally, I've run into a problem where an application works fine in Windows 7 RC x32 but will not install in x64. I know about Windows 7 Pro having an XP mode, but is it worth the hassle and additional cost to upgrade to Pro? Re-booting to XP or RC1 is time consuming but easy. Is it possible to have XP mode running in the background and switch back and forth between them without having to close XP mode?

Well first of all I started up my PC and it immediately jumped into Startup Repair maybe cause I didn't shut it down properly. It went through the repair and several times. By then I knew something was wrong, I checked the Diagnostics and see what Startup Repair had actually done. It turns out it could not fix an error with the OS Loader. It came up with two error code (0x2) and (0x490).I followed the following instructions:
1. bcdedit /export C:BCD_Backup
2. C:
3. cd Boot
4. attrib bcd -s -h -r
5. ren C:BootBCD BCD.old
6. bootrec /RebuildBCD
I also tried using /FixMBR and /FixBoot However none of these worked and my I tried booting up it came up with the same problem. I went back into the Windows 7 DVD and ran Startup Repair again. It said it was completed successfully but it said also if it doesn't boot then there's something wrong.Which leads to my new error screen that never goes away everytime I switch on the PC. The error message is as follows:A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source. If you have a Windows installation disc, insert the disc and restart your computer. Click "Repair You Computer," and then choose a recovery tool.Otherwise, to start Windows so you can investigate further, press the ENTER key to display the boot menu, press F8 for Advanced Boot Options, and select Last Known Good. If you understand why the digital signature cannot be verified and want to start Windows without this file, temporarily disable driver sginature enforcement.
File: WindowsSystem32Winload.exe
Status: 0xc0000428
Info: Windows cannot verify the digital signature for this file.
If I try and press ENTER it will take me to the boot menu and if I press ENTER to select an OS (I only have one) then it will jump back to the previous screen.

I've had my computer for 8 months, it's a dell inspiron 1545 running windows 7 home premium. I'm suddenly unable to start the computer as it just comes up with a blue windows 7 screen with a cursor and that's it. I've tried starting it in normal mode and and startup repair but the same thing happens with both. I ran the diagnostics test and it came up with error code 2000-0142 which after googling i've found is a hard drive problem.
Will reinstalling windows 7 wipe my hard drive?

I am having a problem starting my PC! I have to start it in the boot menu under the RAID option. If I do not do this a message saying "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key.." comes up, and just keeps popping up regardless of what I press! I would try using my boot disk but for the life of me I can't find it, and as windows 7 was already installed on this computer when we got it 3 year ago, I can't accurately recall if it came with one!I am no expert on BIOS, but I have read other problems similar to this one, and know that if I don't have the boot disk or the OS disk, I will need to know that at least.I am curious if the (Hard drive) is the issue. The BIOS tells me that anything in parentheses is disabled from corresponding type menu.

I have win 7 Ultimate, and every time I reboot win, lot of devices became unusable with "This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed. (Code 24)". I have to do troubleshoot of my notebook (in "Devices and Printers") and then almost all device with error 24 is uninstalled/installed and after that it is working fine. There are some devices
(e.g. Hamachi Network Interface, VMware Virtual Eth Adapter) which are not healed with notebook troubleshoot. Those devices can't be found in "Network Connections", but they are working fine.
Does anybody have a clue? (this is really irritating to reinstall all devices after every reboot)

I just tried to install the drivers for my Sierra Wireless AirCard 597E. Not only did it not work, no all of my USB drivers are toast.
Looking at Device Manager I've got the following errors:
Intel ICH9 Family USB Universal Host Controller - xxx
(where xxx is 2934 to 2939 and then 293A, 293C)
Looking at the driver details, it's throwing the following error:
Code 39: "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be missing or corrupt (Code 39)".
This leads me to believe that the AirCard installer overwrote my drivers.
Looking at driver details I need to replace the following files:c:windowssystem32driversusbhub.sys c:windowssystem32driversusbport.sys c:windowssystem32driversusbuhci.sys However looking at the physical files these dont appear to have changed from the rest of the install.
help! Anyone have any ideas?

I am having some 590 gtx problems and I believe it is just a bad card but I wanted to post it on here and get an opinion from some others. First things first, bought the card brand new about 2 weeks ago. When I got the card I put it in boot up windows and got the newest drivers for the 590 gtx. After the installation was complete I restarted windows, when I booted back up and tried running the nvidia control center it said "You are not currently using a displayed attached to a nvidia GPU." I thought this was weird so went into display manager and looked and saw that the 590 gtx was there but was reading "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)." After this I clean uninstall all the drivers and started installing other drivers. This problem occurred for every driver set except for the drivers that came with the installation disc which I believe are the 267.xx drivers. Thus worked and I was able to run the nvidia control center and utilize the 590, after about 10 mins i got a BSOD with a BCCode 116. After some research I realized that the error I was getting was because of failure to connect with the video card due to hardware or software issues so it timed out, thus causing the BSOD. This continued to happen every 10 to 15mins on these drivers. I have to mention this is over the course of 3 clean re-formats of windows 7. Also I stuck my old video card in which is a Radeon HD 4750 x2 and worked fine and is what I have been using on this system since I built it 3 weeks ago.

I kept getting the bug code usb driver blue screen of death. I opted to just format the drive and reinstall windows 7. It was working fine for a day or so and now it is happening again. I also got a blue screen that said system service exception. Could it be a hardware issues. I few weeks ago I was trying to max out my ram slots and it didn't like it so I went back to my original 2 sticks of ram in stead of 4? I may just try and reformat again and reinstall.
