Bitlocker Denying Write Access To Usb Thumb Drive?
Mar 21, 2012
I have Windows 7 installed and up until recently I could read and write files from my hard disk to my usb thumb drive. Now after some updates were downloaded and applied (automatically so I am not sure what was installed), when I insert my drive into the usb slot, the Bitlocker Drive Encryption window pops up and I have two choices. Encrypt this drive to allow write access or don't encrypt this drive but it will be read only. I checked Control Panel -> Bitlocker and it says its off my for C drive and my usb thumb drive. So i'm not sure why its wanting to encrypt it. How do I get rid of this Bitlocker and gain write access to my usb drive?

This isn't specifically Windows 7, but I hope I have more possibilities with Windows 7. My thumb drive, which I hate to have to throw away, has become write-protected. It's a 16 GB thumb drive, so nothing to toss easily. It has no physical switch on it. I read about all sorts of solutions, like low-level format or registry editing. Nothing works. I always come back to square one: Can't format because of write-protection. Registry doesn't do a thing. I also found out that there is a virus on it. Maybe it caused the problem. However, the virus program can't remove it, because of the write-protection or because it is a 'non-local disk'. Vicious circles...

I am about to transfer all the files pertaining to a project, copy them onto an external hard drive and give the drive to my client. There are 4 .VEG files (Sony Vegas files, my video editing software) that I would like to be protected. Meaning that only me can open those files. So that the client can't simply hire another dude with the same software and freely work on the project on his end. Actually I highly doubt that my client is even remotely capable of doing something like that but this is a security protocol I wanted to implement for a while and now is a good place to start. So is there a way to password protect those files or denying access altogether?

I'm making a bootable thumb drive with all the best recovery and testing tools I can think of. Problem is I cant think of any other tools to put on it.
So far I have Hiren's boot cd, ubcd, ubcd4win, XP install disk image (dunno if the xp works yet), clonezilla, ubuntu, and orphcrack.
Anyone else have any ideas on other disks I should put on there or favorite tools?

I had to use my thumb drive to upload files to a Mac, so I reformatted the drive to FAT32. Now I'm trying to get it back to NTFS so I can use again on my Win 7 machine, but the drive is not even showing up in My Computer.
The Drive shows in Device Manager and in Disk Management, but offers me no option to format.

I just recently bought a new motherboard (old one died), and didn't realize that it had no IDE port on it for easy Windows 7 re-installation (my only available dvd drive is still IDE). After trying to find a friend with one, I ended up trying to make a bootable thumb drive using the Windows 7 bootable USB drive utility and my father's computer, and every single time I've tried to do it, it gives an error right at the end about bootsect.exe saying it isn't bootable.
Asus P5QL-VM, Intel Core 2 Duo q9300, 4gb (2x2gb) ram, seagate SATA hard drive of some sort, GEForce 9800GTX+ gpu.

I installed 7 on my Dell laptop that has no CD-ROM drive. I created a partition (D and set it to Active, installed from that partition, doing a quick format over Vista (C.
All was fine and dandy, but I was getting some boot option, I'm assuming because the Active drive had the install files on it. No problem, I'll set the C: partition to Active.
Reboot, should go away right? Wrong. "Bootmgr is missing."
No problem, there has to be a way to fix this. I'll put the CD in and recover... Or not!
What I have is a 2 gig USB thumbdrive, is there anyway to fix this problem with that? If not, what are my options.
Using the factory Dell restore to get Vista back won't work, I bought the laptop secondhand and they screwed that up.

I know this does not necessarily pertain to Windows installation, but I did not know where else to place this thread. I know it is possible to burn isos to a thumb drive, but is there a way to put a boot loader on a thumb drive so I can have many images on separate partitions? For example, I want to partition my 32GB thumb drive into 700MB partitions, so that I can have Clonezilla live on one, GParted on another, and maybe the Windows 7 repair disk on another. Is this possible?

have a HP Pavillion DV6-2010sa laptop thats running windows 7.
No picture display when i turn on the laptop, just caps lock and num lock LEDs flash twice. I looked this up and it means corrupt BIOS....
Now in order to fix this i need to flash my BIOS using a USB thumb drive ( pressing and holding Windows Key + B on start-up) The file provided by HP only extracts into a WinFLash.exe, so i used winRAR to extract the 3635F13.FD file from WinFlash.exe.
I understand i need rename the .FD file my question is what do i have to name the 3635F13.FD file in order to get the thumb drive to flash the BIOS.

I formatted my PC to another installation of Windows 7 Ultimate(also the one I had before the format).
Now before I formatted windows on drive C:, I encrypted a folder with Bitlocker. Now this folder was on another harddrive D: on my PC. After the format on C: drive, I cannot access any files in the encrypted folder anymore. The folder is color green(so are all the files inside) and when clicking on any file inside, it tells me "you don't have access to open this file".

I've got a comp that used to be connected to a domain where it was locked down pretty tightly. I've got full admin rights on it, but it's still denying me the right to change settings in McAfee (and other programs like Windows Firewall, etc).I cleared out all group policies on the computer, but apparently not.Right now McAfee is the last thing I have to try to get a program working (I think it's stopping it from running), but I can't find any way to shut it down, prevent it from working, or enable specific programs, every single setting is grayed out.So, short of going into safe mode and deleting every McAfee file I can find, do you have any idea how I can completely wipe out all old security settings on this machine, group policies, etc?

I have encrypted a driver with bitlocker in windows 7. I need to be able to lock the drive after I have opened it. The only way i can see to do this is to restart the computer.
Does anyone know a different way of doing this. For example a right click and lock button?

I have been having some issues when trying to turn Bitlocker on in C:
I have followed the instructions as per this forum to enable a Startup key in gpedit.msc as I don't have TPM which worked.
After following the instructions, Windows Bitlocker asked me to insert a USB to save the startup key to. This appeared to save and then moved onto the next step where I took down the recovery key etc. and finally restarted to make sure my system was compatible before encryption started.
Upon restart, Windows said that it couldnt find a key on the USB drive. After further investigation I found that windows did not save the key to the USB after all even checked as a hidden file. It will save the text file (recovery key) to usb but not the bek file for the startup key.
I have tried this several times but each time it wont save although the system doesn't say there has been a problem and moves on to the next stage.
The USB is a 2gb cruzer with the smart drive software removed and re-formatted to NTFS. I have also tried this on other USB drives with no luck and the USB drives work as Iam able to write other things to it?

I wonder if anyone here have some experience in this area.
I have a Gigabyte P55A-UD4P Mb which has a TPM chip.
I installed Windows 7 Ultimate and try to enable bit-locker. It seems to me I am always unable to lock the drive with TPM.
I have follow the standard steps, clear TPM chip in bios, then go to control panel and enable bit-locker, The process takes ownership of TPM, create and back up TPM password. Then generate bit-locker key and store it on USB key. Finally it pre test if the drive sill unlock before encryption starts. It is at this point after the reboot that the bit-locker error come up and said bit-lock cannot be enable because the device has change or pin not inputed.
Did I do anything wrong?

I encrypted my 4GB brand new Flash Drive with Bitlocker to Go in Windows 7 Enterprise (RC), ejected it, restarted my Windows 7 PC, and everything still worked. I tried opening it in XP and it was read-only and required my password to even look at it. That was expected. What I didn't expect, after ejecting it from the XP machine, was that it would be:
INACCESSIBLE, UNREADABLE, and IMPOSSIBLE to FORMAT after that!
No matter what PC I put it in now, I get a message saying that I must format the drive and nothing else. The drive is worthless. I when I right click in Windows 7, there is no BitLocker option. Before I throw it away, does someone know how to FIX THIS?

The help page for BitLocker mentions
"A removable USB memory device, such as a USB flash drive. If your computer doesnt have TPM version 1.2 or higher, BitLocker will store its key on the flash drive. This option is only available if your system administrator has set up your network to allow the use of a startup key instead of the TPM."
I don't know how to set this up - anyone have in-depth guide for this?
