After unsolvable problems with VLC player (constant crash reports) I want to move back to Windows Media Player as my standard program to play audio & video files. But whatever I click and do, I cannot find a way to (re)associate the 'VLC'-files to WMP12.If I rightclick a 'VLC'-file in a folder, I can select 'open with' and then select WMP. But only for one instance! If i want to make WMP the default opener, I get this error message: 'This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the default programs control panel' - Strange message, because this file HAS a default program already, I just want to change it!I have desperately been looking for an option Windows had in the past, where you can (in explorer, I think) get a list of ALL file extensions, then select which program to use to open a specific extension, then check the box

Dont' know where I messed it up, but I use an SD memory card in a multi-card reader. It used to pop up the open with windows, don't do anything and open with Nikon Filer Transer, Canon Zoombrowser. Since I use both ViewNX2 and the Canon Zoombrowser this was very handy to pop up when I inserted the card. I could choose which program to transfer the files with, or just open the card. Now nothing happens. associating my G: Drive with No Action, Open In Folder, Open with Nikon file transfer program or open with Canon Zoombrowser?

In my work environment, we have .swf files that when right-clicked to Open, are supposed to open in Adobe Flash Player. However my computer hasn't been completely set up. When I tried that, Windows 7 tried to open it with Winamp. Looked through my Start menu Programs and didn't see Flash Player.
Downloaded and installed from Adobe.com. However, when I now try to go into default programs and associate the .swf file type with Flash Player, that app doesn't show up as an option.

I have searched all over the Internet looking for how to associate certain extensions with certain programs using a .bat file... but no luck. I have spent about two hours experimenting. I'm able to do this from the command prompt: Code: ASSOC .cpp=C++_Source_Code FTYPE C++_Source_Code=E:Notepad2.exe %0 I created a small hi.cpp file to test this. It works perfectly. The command line is E:Notepad2.exe E:hi.cpp just like it should be.
However, doing the same thing from within a batch file yields the command line E:Notepad2.exe E:assoc.bat which opens my batch file when i double-click on hi.cpp... Is it even possible to perform this association from within a batch file? I have a LOT of different file types to register, and i don't want to spend 20 minutes every time i log on associating these extensions by hand.

I often want to send an email attachment from my desktop or other directory. When I right click on the file, and click send to email recipient, i get an error telling me no email program is associated to perform this action.I don't have any stand alone email program s installed. I strictly use web based email (gmail & hotmail) as my mail programs. I do not wish to install a stand alone program such as outlook or Thunderbird. How can I associate my request to email to a recipient to automatically go to my web based email platform (gmail or hotmail) and send the mail?I cant seem to find a hack or a small program to install to tell Windows 7 to use my web based email as my program!

I have installed Win 7 and Win Live Mail.I have my old OS (Vista) on a secondary Hard Drive and have managed to import all the messages from the old drive. Now I want to obtain my list of contacts but cannot see how. I have trawled through this question via the search box search and the nearest answer is to export them first. Unfortunately I did not do that.

This is quite a complex operation and MS doesn't actually explain how to do it so here goes.
The trick is to get your email messages into Outlook Express (OE on XP) or Windows Mail (on Vista) before you can import into Windows Live mail. Then the import can be done directly.
There isn't any way currently to import mail directly from Outlook to Windows Live Mail so you have to do it indirectly BEFORE installing Windows 7.
1) even if you don't use Outlook Express (XP) or Windows Mail (VISTA) you need to have them running on the same machine as your copy of OUTLOOK.
2) create (if you haven't already) email accounts in OE or Windows mail identical to those you have in Outlook.
3) Now import your messages from Outlook into OE or Windows Mail.
4) Change the Store Identity in OE or Windows mail to a disk that your Windows 7 can read (do this under Maintenance - data storage locations in OE or Windows Mail).
Doing this saves you having to install Live Mail on Vista or XP
5) Logon to your Windows 7 system and install Windows Live mail.
6) Set up your email accounts
7) File ==> import==>messages
8) Chose Outlook express or Windows mail depending on step 3)
9) Browse to the directory where you stored the messages in step 4)
10) Job done.
A bit fiddly but obviously MS don't want to make it easy for people to switch from Outlook
Note also the "Send and Receive" function is calles "SYNC" in Windows Live mail -- confusing but there it is.
If you also installed Windows Messenger you can prevent it from starting automatically at startup by going to the Orb ==>acessories==>run. type msconfig and unclick windows messenger in the start up box.
There doesn't appear to be ANY method of importing mail directly from Outlook 2003/2007.

Ever since purchasing a new Dell PC with Windows 7 and Windows Live Mail, I am being driven around the bend with mail problems.Previously with XP and Vista my mail through my ISP worked almost flawlessly. Now it seems that not only is my email is being wrecked by Windows Live Mail, but Microsoft is monitoring my private mail! Why am I receiving messages (below) from Microsoft re Live Mail and Hotmail? In effect it seems that Windows Live Mail is duplicating AND storing incoming mail on my ISP's server.

In Win XP, the contacts selection called up the contact name and e-mail in separate columns, so that you could sort the list by name or by e-mail address. Is there any way of doing that in Win 7?Occasionally I get an e-mail with just the e-mail address, but not a contact name, and I'd like to be able to find out who it is.

I have - quite stupidly, as I now think - installed Windows Seven on my old Vista on my Laptop without thinking about the Mail program at all. That is: neither did I make a backup nor did I export contact lists from Windows Mail, etc.
I was, however, able to import most of the stuff from Windows Mail into Windows Live Mail anyway. I took ownership of both Windows Mail folders (in C:Program Files and C:Program Files(x86) including subs 'n files, and tried the import function in Windows Live Mail - three times, I think.
I can't really tell whether or not all my messages are there, yet I can say for sure that what I find in the Storage Folders section in Windows Live Mail reproduces only a part of the filing system I had established in Windows Mail. That is to say: A lot of the folders I used to have in Windows Mail are simply missing. Are the messages that used to be in there missing, too? No idea so far... they might be in the Inbox or somewhere else.
To be sure, I have everything, that is: all my messages, on my webmail-account. Yet it took me forever to work out my huge filing system (including all the message rules, etc.) in Windows Mail which allows me to have more folders than my webmail account that is for some reason limited to 258 folders. So even although I know that in the end I do have all the messages on my webmail, I would just hate to have to do all that work again! Thus I'd just love to "simply" get my Webmail stuff imported as it was.
Any ideas what I might have done wrong? ...what I could do to retrieve the missing folders?
Alternatively: Is there any way to "simply" (I know what you're thinking...) reactivate Windows Mail in Windows 7 so that I can start over by properly exporting everything from there?
I have found some related topics but did not see anyone having this particular problem. If I simply overlooked it, sorry! At any rate: I'd appreciate any help you can offer!

The control panel Default Programs options only work for programs that Windows 7 admits exist (with some VERY strange omissions, like MS Office) but it is easy to work around that by using windows explorer to let you associate any program that you can browse to with any file type that is already on your system.
BUT how to you associate a new "protocol" with a program (specifically Internet Explorer). My problem is that I have one email provider that automatically changes every incoming email hyperlink from http://etc to blockedhttp://etc
With WinXP and Outlook Express there was no problem because clicking on the link would automatically open IE8 which would of course fail to open the site, but I could easily click into the address bar and delete the "blocked" from in front of http
Now I'm running Windows 7 and Windows Live Mail and I can't get the links to open anything. When I click on the link, I get an error message "There is no probram associated to perform the requested action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel."
I have tried each of the functions under Default Programs and none of them will let you enter a NEW association. I found the one that says Internet Explorer is associated with http:// and https:// but there is no way to add any new protocol. Unlike filetypes you can't work around the protocols by using explorer.

I upgraded my wife's computer from Vista to Windows 7 yesterday. Before starting the process I copied old Vista info to a second drive. I did not realize that Windows 7 did not utilize Windows Mail before starting the upgrade process (dummy me!).
In proceeding through the Dell provided upgrade disks, I selected Upgrade as my option.
Now, I am not able to Import my old Windows Messages into Windows Live Mail. The upgrade process created a folder called Windows.old and I have my separately saved Vista info on my other drive. My question is if the old Windows Mail messages are there specifically what folder do they reside in either of the two (or both) locations, and how do I get them into my Live Mail history.
Seems like there should be a way to do this, but it is not as simple as the canned instructions for importing e-mail.

I recently updated to Firefox 18. If I go to Windows' Control Panel and then click on "Uninstall a program", both Firefox 18 and Firefox 15 show up in the list of programs. Should I just leave it as it is, or should I uninstall Firefox 15?
By the way, I updated to Firefox 18 through Firefox's update feature, if that helps.

MS and their mail systems are giving me grief. I have a Vista 32 PC using "Windows Mail" and want to transfer email folders (lots) and messages to Windows 7 using Windows Live Mail 2011.Windows Mail was a replacement for Outlook express on Vista.Windows Live Mail 2011 is a replacement for Windows Mail on Windows 7.I tried a couple of things.
1) Basic Export and ImportI exported relavent files: Account info, Contacts and all the messages to a folder (in Windows Mail format) on old computer and used the old "Addias" transfer - copied folder to stick and RAN it over to the new computer.
- Imported (using the Windows Mail format) the Account info successfully,
- imported the Contact info successfully.
- Import Messages - appeared at first to be successful
Issue: Message folders appear to be renamed and some folder names have been truncated, not all folders appear to be there. (Looks like "long Name folders greater that 8 characters get truncated)
2) Tried the "Easy transfer mechanism (Vista and Win7 transfer utility) - but couldn't get the new computer to see the Vista even though I could see them on the network. I thought that this would transfer the folder names correctly.I'm about to try a time consuming effort of coping folder by folder (export/Import)What I am more concerned about is that the individaul messages may have the same issue Ie not all coming accross and subject names being lost. Looking for alternative or third party transfer solutions?

OK, We all know that there are spam filters that you can use, but there also used to be rules that you could set up to block certain people or domains or even words in an email that you could select to block unwanted mail in earlier versions of Windows.First you can supposedly block domains but it doesn't work, there are no more rules (that I can see) that you can set in windows mail anymore. What happened to these features? Do they still exist and I just can't find them? or did some Genius remove them?

After a clean install of Windows 7, I installed Office 2007. I also installed Windows Live Mail not to use it as an e-mail client, but only as an intermediate to import mail accounts. Therefore, I imported all my many e-mail accounts to Windows Live Mail from previously saved IAF files. Until here all worked as expected. The problem is that now, when I try to "Import internet mail account settings" from Windows Live Mail to Outlook it just answers "No internet accounts were found to import". How come?
Can someone please instruct me on how to overcome this problem, please?

I just changed over from Windows Vista and installed Windows 7 32 bit. I did a total backup onto an external hard drive. Now that I have my new mail installed from Microsoft Office 2010 which is Microsoft Outlook, I want to reinstall all my mail contacts from my backed up system. Does anyone know the file ext to look for and under what folder would these contacts be posted in? Also, would anything change from Vista to 7 as far as the ext name ?
