I have just bought an Acer laptop running windows 7 home premium 64bit. However, when running the preinstalled Windows Live Messenger 2011 on this system, special characters such as ☺ or ♫ do not show up correctly in the chat window, instead appearing as a blank box. They do however show up in the contact list for contacts that have such characters in their names or messages.

View 1 Replies View RelatedStrange problem about a month ago maybe once every 4 to 10 days the PC boots up and all the characters are strange, instead of the usual alpabet they are spercial characters. I do a system restore and all is fine. If anyone has any thoughts on this as how to solve this short of reloading windows. I included a screen shot to help with understanding what happens.

I have some files that start with the Greek letter t I don't seem to find a way to make WS recognize characters like these for searches. When I type get no results at all. I have already tried with the advanced query filename:without getting any results.When I use Total Commander for searching for et all the results I am looking for, and I know that all these files are included in the Windows Search Index because they can be found if using some other parts of the file name, like for example searching for torrent it finds files with the name torrent.
View 3 Replies View RelatedWindows 7, won't accept a password I set to it for my HP 620, though with a special character; which goes for Kar's1990 --that's the password. Password that used to work flawlessly in weeks I have had it in use though until today after coming back from my morning routine, to boot the system, to find out every time I try to write "'" to complete the password properly, it instead adds another black dot to the input field in which case the form ends like: Kar'as1990 instead.
The keyboard isn't Spanish though configured, to international English, so to give me the special character without a problem. To throw as well, I had some virus attack yesterday; but swept them immediately. Nevertheless, I don't know if that have something to do with the keyboard no properly writing the a with the accent I'm seeking it to input.
I figured out how to do the French characters such as or , but i can't figure out the shortcuts for things such as or , even though the keyboard has buttons for them.

View 2 Replies View RelatedWe recently upgraded to Windows 7 Home Premium after having issues w/a yearly upgraded antiviral software that suddenly wouldn't work w/Vista. No problems, then one evening while in an open live video chat forum it crashed, never had a problem with this before. Have gotten the BSOD since then. Currently only works in safe mode. Ran repair, ran restore previous, nothing works. When he loaded Windows 7, he got updates but I don't think he checked for updates with the drivers. Also, he was in the slow process of pulling off alot of family pics as they are taking up too much space.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have this weird problem where my computer will sometimes show Asian characters (Korean, Japanese, Chinese, etc.) and sometimes it'll show them as blocks. It's really annoying because I can't see what the song names are in iTunes and some of my folders in Chinese are just blocks. I've already tried installing the language packs but that didn't help. I've also asked this on Microsoft's forum but they didn't help much either. I can see the fonts clearly on webpages and I can type in Chinese perfectly but I can't see the characters in places like folder names, file names, etc. I currently run Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am on Win 7 Ultimate and my messenger kept logging out every 40 seconds or so. After I logged in,my contact list would be different each time.(I am confident that my friends did not come and go at the time.) For around 40 seconds, I would be able to open chat windows, type them a message, and it will then bounce back.Shortly after that I'd be logged off and it'll reconnect. After 6-20 times of logging in and out desperately, it would then magically log back with the correct contact list and it would stop disconnecting.
I have tried reinstall Live Messenger(6 times), checked the 'Sign me out of all other places when I sign in' box in option. I have reinstall Win 7 too many times it consumed all my free time and now my social life(MSN) is about over...

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a user with a PP presentation that shows Asian characters for the bullets. I changed them using the Bullets and Numbering menu.
However, we kept two copies of the PP presentation (this is a default company profile PP template)...and when the presentation is viewed under XP the Asian characters appear as normal bullets...but under Windows 7x64 they remain Asian.
Has anyone seen this before? Is there something we may have done in the original template that is making it different under each OS?
We purchased a HP Pavilion p6242f Desktop with Windows 7 in late December 2009. The computer was set up by the store tech who among other things downloaded and installed Window Live Mail now that Outook Express is no more.We are having persistent problems with the keyboard in Live Mail only. If you enclose certain characters in ( ) or " ", you get stupid emoticons or strange letters with peculiar accent marks. The tech came back and checked: the language is set to English/US Canada. He couldn't find the cause. I have read a similar complaint on Microsoft's Vista Forum but didn't see a solution. This is a brand-new computer: why is this happening?

Occasionally it works OK but usually when I accept the invite WLM disconnects me and brings up a box telling me it will reconnect in X seconds. If I keeping getting the other PC to send invites it might eventually work but it may take 50+ attempts, sometimes I just give up.

If I uninstall and install 2011 I can sign in fine, which seems to rule out firewall/antivirus issues. I can log in with my account on the web and other devices.If I re-install 2012I've tried virtually every process listed on the Internet and cannot resolve this. For some reason, even though it appears to be up and running with me logged in fine, it won't show me any IM's received or made. If I hover over the icon in the taskbar, I can see I have a conversation window open, but if I click on it, nothing happens. I can see the main page no problem, but never any conversation window.

When Live is connected it stays open in the taskbar even when the window is closed which makes it easy to navigate and change status since i keep it pinned to the taskbar. Is there a way to do so with Yahoo? With the new yahoo there's a dot on the icon to show your status if you're online or away etc... It'd be nice if i could make Yahoo function the same way as Live does when I'm logged in. So my main question is, is there any way to close Yahoo to the taskbar rather than the system tray?
