Unable To Use Restore
Dec 12, 2009
My Vista system crashed and I was unable to use restore so I borrowed a restore disk from a person that had Dell. When Purchased, my system was HP. The restore worked but now I don't have any progroms. The only thing that came up was the recycle icon and clock. How can I retrieve my original programs or any programs?

I have a recent problem installing Windows updates on Vista Ultimate as the update process stays on 'creating restore point' forever. I've let it run as long as 7 hours in this state, with no change. It looks like the system is unable to make a restore point sucessfully. I know it has worked in the past, as I'm fairly up-to-date on Windows updates. Reading some other threads, I've tried using Disk Clean-up to remove all by the most recent restore points, and then try to disable/re-enable system restore - this part without success. When I check the system properties for System Restore, the System Restore button is greyed out. I've attached a screenshot of the screen for reference. I've checked the group policies to verify the System Restore is not disabled there.

I am currently running Vista home on my main PC. I have a router plugged into it. The router is working fine (my son's laptop accesses wirelessly, and I am able to hit the net using a virtual PC that I have set up on it.) However, my main computer is not recognizing the router and is returning an APIPA address when I run ipconfig. I have tried to ping the router but am not able to hit it. I have replaced the cable (even though I do not think that is the issue as I am able to access via the virtual PC). I am unable to restore any connection.

Vista 64bit has been running really well on my desktop after a clean install in March. Suddenly, Windows update is failing to install, because it can't create a systen restore point. When I try to create one in System Restore, manually, it fails also, citing the shadow file timeout, or some such.....I am worried, because I can't use backup, either! Anyone know what's going on?

Why can't I use system restore to restore back to certain restore points? I was only successful twice with it. When my laptap was new and when I used it after re-formatting my hard drive. On all occassions after those two instances I can never restore back to any restore point. It always says that "unspecified error" line. If Microsoft doesn't know what happend, how could I. Why did they bother putting system restore if it doesn't work all the time anyway. It gives you a false sense of security.

After installing SP2, on 5/25, System Restore seems to have stopped creating automatic restore points every 24 hours. I checked the Task Manger and it is set for 24 hours. It shows a restore point being created on 5/26. System Restore shows the last Restore Point being created on 5/25 about 1 hour after downloading.

I went to accessories/system tools/system restore and clicked it. I then got a small dialogue window asking if I wanted to continue and I clicked continue. That little window disappeared but then nothing hasppened. I was expecting to see a list of possible restore points but nothing showed on my screen. I clicked system restore again and got a message that system restore was already running and would now exit.

I am running a hp pavilion dv9730 with vista home prem. 32. I need to restore my system but the restore program quits do to a virus in the restore files. As it is restoring Norton sees the virus and removes it from my system but Norton can not see the virus inside the restore files. Right now my system is fine (virus wise) but I need to restore from an earlier restore point because I deleted some files and now my cd/dvd drive is not recognized. But like I said, I can not restore do to the fact that I have a virus buried inside my restore files. I could care less about the virus in the restore files, my main goal is to get my cd/dvd drive working again so I can install my business software.

The mystery, at least to me, my PC was running almost 2 years. and it was not until about 3 weeks ago that System Restore began to save Restore Points the size of Approx 3 to 4GB daily. Prior to that the Restore Points were well under 1GB. it would be 3 to 6 days before I noticed the loss of 1GB. So why suddenly would the Restore File grew 1 one day from well under 1GB to between 3 to 4GB? That now is the issue I would like to know the answer to. and perhaps that file being saved with each Restore Point is not needed. I mean it wasn't needed for almost 2 years. so I can't think over night it became important but it sure is eating up HDD space.

Daughters laptop was reporting that the HDD was about to fail, should backup and repair.
The concensus of opinion suggested a new HDD was the answer.
Have done that and created the restore disks from the original HDD.
Started the restore and went ok until nearly at the end of formatting the new HDD when I got the message
"error if it happens again contact HP" it did not happen again and appeared to restore files ok, did a verify and no errors.
Trying to boot from the HDD it now fails. Errors report registry incorrect plus others.
Cannot load my Vista version as is 64bit.
I cannot obviously send the errors to MS as the thing will not boot.
Any solutions obvious apart from getting a disk containing Vista 32 bit system
Laptop is an HP Presario running Vista HOme Premium 32.

Is it possible to make an image backup with this operating system?
Also if a file backup completes successfully and is backed up on a network drive will I be able to restore from a new install of window vista premium on the same laptop that was backed up to the network drive? Is there a better way using vista premium? I have Norton Ghost 12.0 on my desktop but not on the laptop with vista premium. Don't what to have to buy a license for laptop if there is another way to make sure in case of a failure of the operating system that I could recover by an full backup or image ? I do some beta testing and do not want to spend hours re-loading software.

ithout trying to be offensive, If anyone has actually tried to test the backup file with the macrium rescu CD, please help me as I am a bit old & thick in the grey matter.
A. I get confused of the Macrium Help instruction, see foto #3 below, 'Create Rescue CD' or 'Create a bootable rescue CD', can't do both so why show them?
B. I made a Vista C: backup as #4 below.
Then tried to create the Rescu CD using the BartPE option but:-
Instead of geting what the Macrium Help file shows #2 which has the "Start the Reflect Restore Wizard" option, I get this #1 below, which does not have that option, thus making the boot CD useles. ............nick

I just installed today's Vista updates and later noticed all my restore points prior to the update are gone.Is this everyone's experience, or did I do something to accidently delete them? It's not really a problem, as I just finished a reinstall and had a clean and stable config before the update, but I'm curious as to why the restore pointd disappeared.

the special junctions that Vista and Win7 have added to the profile directories for backwards-compatibility. No backup software I have seen (short of complete imaging software) seems to backup and/or restore junction points. So I find myself with the profile missing all the default junction points, and quite frankly, not sure how to manually recreate them. No matter what I do, I cannot seem to replicate the Vista/Win7's original junctions that are hidden when "Hide Protected Operating System Files" is enabled.
The junction points that I am referring to are things like ("My Documents", "My Music", "Application Data", "Local Settings", etc). Is there a tool out there that can accomplish this for me? Or is there somethign I can do by hand to recreate these junction points? I have searched and searched the web for hours, but cannot seem to find anyone who has asked this question before.

I cannot defrag. or restore. The Dell tech. said that he found a few files which cannot be repaired by SFC/Scannow. I told him I probably needed to take it into a PC shop, as he wanted me to reinstall Vista and I don't think I can do that. He said to tell the shop to perform CHKDSK/R. Is this something I can do at home, find and delete corrupt files, without uninstalling and reinstalling Vista? I just used defrag.

My problem is I can't get the "System Restore" to work. Every time I set it to do a system restore, it appears to go through all the right motions. Then after it shuts down and restarts itself, I get an error message: "System restore did not complete successfully. "An unspecified error occurred during system restore." It goes on to say that the computers settings have not changed. What's going on? I've tried several different checkpoints including one that I had manually set myself. None of them work, I always get the same error message.

when I open System Restore, I'm presented with a different dialog screen than I was before. Before, I was presented with a screen that had already select the most recent restore point allowing me to select 'Choose another restore point'. Now I'm not presented with these choices. I only see a Next and a Cancel button and a space where the choices were. When I click Next I see a list of restore points, just like before. But, that first screen is definitely different than what I used to see. how I can get the old screen back?
