In Windows Vista Ultimate SP1, every system drive (partition) is listed in my SendTo menu even though the C:Users\%USERNAME%AppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsSendTo folder only contains the following (defaults):Compressed (zipped) folder Desktop (create shortcut) Fax Recipient Mail Recipient I my case there are 14 drives including A;, C:, D:, etc. The SendTo menu is too busy.Is there any way to get rid of the list of drives in SendTo?
Although I see the mapimail link in the SendTo folder, it no longer shows up when I right-click an item. I created a guest account: in that account, it is still functioning. I tried to copy the mapimail link of the guest account and paste it in the main account (just in case it was corrupted): nothing! The possible cause being that I changed the default association of the .mapimail files from "unknown application" to Thunderbird, I tried to restore it to "unknown application", but nothing happened. I tried some other solutions from other threads as well as from other sites, but I didn't get to a solution. Vista Home Premium, SP1
As per an example I created a batch file with the following line: DIR %1 /O >LPT1: I placed the file in the SendTo folder but nothing happens when I right click a folder PrintDir.bat which is the name of the file.
Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this; I didn't know where else to do it.
I've been having a problem with my menu bar in file explorer. I've posted this question elsewhere, but so far, no one has been able to help
I've begun hiding my menu bar recently and I noticed something annoying, and judging by other people's screenshots, it's not supposed to look this way.
If the pic shows up, look above organize and you'll see a fat white bar where the menu is collapsed. It's as if it isn't collapsed completely, or maybe it has something to do with padding(?)..I don't know. I just cannot get rid of this, and it's really distracting on dark themes like this one, though it shows up on all themes, even regular windows aero.
I want to keep the Vista start menu theme , but i also want the old fly out menu for all programs (the one you get when you select the classic start menu option)
is there any way to do this and keep the Vista style theme?
I have been having a problem with windows explorer.
I was just customizing my layout of the explorer window and accidentally clicked on the menu bar option. I now have the classic menu bar and i just cant get rid of it at all.
Although most of my XP/Vista 32 bit apps work fine in Vista 64, many do not show their right-click context menus even though I have enabled them. There are a few that appear but the majority do not. Is there some way to correct this?
I have noticed that in certain programs (windows mail, dreamweaver, to name but two), the menus in the menu-bar are offset to the right when I open them. They appear not directly below the menu, but below-to-the right of them. Look at the screenshot for details. What can be causing this (it doesn't happen in every program, that is the weird thing about it)
when I type in a word in a search tab, it remembers what I typed so the next time I use a search window a box drops down to allow me to click on what I had previously typed. How do I clear that?
The scroll bar in dropdown menu of the address bar is missing in IE8, I am not sure whether it was there originally and I have noticed that the same addresses remain in the dropdown menu. The old addresses are not replaced by the new addresses lke it was in IE7, could you please let me know if it can be changed.
I created batchfiles to change default OS and reboot. I set the bootloader delay to 0, but the menu still flashes for my eyes for about a sec. I would like to switch OS using the batch files (yes, they use bcdedit.exe) and I would not like to see the OS selection menu. Is there a way to tweak the bootmgr to not show the menu?:sarc:
Okay just re-confirmed a solution to two simultaneous problems that I think will be helpful to folks. Soon after I got my Vista x64 pc I started noticing huge constant CPU usage spikes attributed to dcomlaunch.
Turned out it was my ATI video card's HDMI audio driver. Go to device manager, expand sound, video and game controllers, and disable "ATI HDMI Audio". Problem solved instantly. My CPU usage dropped from ~30-40% constant use to <5% average.
Fast-forward 6 months after I upgrade to sp2. I notice that in PhotoShop and a couple other apps that use old-school file open/save dialog boxes, I can't choose a new file location from the "Look in:" drop-down menu at the top of the box. Every time I click it, the menu opens and then immediately closes again. Infuriating! A couple days later I notice my CPU has been working overtime too. Could it be the ATI HDMI Audio device is active again?
Yup, there it was active again. And this time I see there are (2) of these devices (I have 2 ati cards) and my CPU usage was up to >60% average! (2 x 30%). Insane. Again, I disable and usage drops back to nearly 0. Yay!
Amazingly, this ALSO SOLVED the problem with the file open / file save drop down menus. I re-enabled the ATI devices to test and confirmed that this was the cause of both the CPU usage AND the odd problem with the pop-up menus closing instantly.
This is driving me nuts and was wondering if anyone else has encountered this. When passing over any other item the item information is displayed right away with no problems. But, when I pass the mouse pointer over a particular item, in the start menu the system hangs and the 'highlight' stops over particular item without displaying item information. (in MS Access it's referred top as the Control Tip Text). After about 20 seconds the item info gets displayed and things go back to normal..........
When I click on Help and Support in the start menu, Help is started, but I get a message like this: The topic you are looking for is not available in this version of Windows.
i installed vista a few weeks ago...being the economical person i am, i decided to go thru all my extraneous directories that windows installs and delete a few things i know i'd never use...mostly public junk, etc etc...i also understand that vista is smart, actually modifying what it shows you depending on the things you use most, bla bla bla.. i'm the only one using my puter and i've set the account up with admin priviledges..
just recently, i've noticed that my name is no longer displayed in the start menu just above the "documents" button & underneath my display picture, and i'm concerned about it...i'm thinking maybe it had something to do with those directories i've deleted in the public area...OR maybe vista just realised that by now i'm the only one who ever touches my puter and has chosen to assume it's always me and not show my name anymore.. i don't know but i'd like to know why this is happening, and if i choose to, how i can restore it? i've tried in the policy manager but none of those settings seem to make a difference...
I have just installed Winzip 10 and there is no right click menu in explorer except for the usual Open/Send to etc, there is not "extract to here" Add to archive etc.
These are all selected in options/context menu commands.
Is there something in Vista 64 that is stopping it.
i want to remove that "organize menu" from my explorer, and found a tutorial: [VP} - Msgboard: Remove Vista Organize Menu when i changed the "shell32.dll" i cant boot anymore, so it did not go too well i`m on vista 64 and had to use restorator instead of reshack, maybe that's the problem. anyone having an idea to solve the problem? are there any other tutorials or ways to do what i want?
I have reinstalled my OS. Since then, my IE7 Favorites list (the dropdown menu that expands when clicking Favorites on the Menu Bar) opens in full length. The "Enable personalized favorites menu" option in Internet Explorer 7 does not hide my less frequently used favorites as expected any more. Is it a question of time until the list collapses and expands (I mean Vista learns my habits) or is it an issue that can be resolved?
I just installed SP 1 and now the Start Menu and Task Bar are gone. It was a lot of work to install. I'd hate to have to take it back out again. Task Bar wasn't locked but wasn't set to hide either.
I stumbled upon vistax64 while researching superfetch in vista and honestly out of all the sites I have been to this one is the most informative and up to date. I found the tutorials section to be a real big help in fact I almost have vista setup just the way I want it because of the guides. I do have a quick question I miss the way XP did its start menu as in hover over a item to go to its menu, vista you have to actually click the menu, anyway to return that to the way it used to be while still keeping the default vista look?
This applies to XP as well as Vista, the solution (if there is one) may also work for both, that's why I decided to crosspost instead of posting a separate question for each OS. Has someone found a way to add new top-level menus to the start menu, the way you could in Win2000, and still can in XP and Vista if you switch to the "classic" start menu?
I have 2 Hard Drives - 1 for OS the other for Data. Since all my data is on disk D I wanted to change the Documents, Music, and Pictires links on the rhs of the start pane to point to the new location. i did that OK by using properties, move location.however I stuffed it up by changing where "Videos" points. "videos is a link under the users on c:. Anyway, I sent it to the wrong place. When I tried to fix it my documents, pictures and music links were all lost. Somehow i've managed to re-establish the Documents link to point to the correct place (on the Data HDD) but I can't change Music or Pictures. They are just empty and do nothing. If I point to them and right click and select properties there is no "Location" tab, and in fact there is nothing at all.The links are OK in "Favourite Links" when Computer window is open, but they are dead on my start panel right hand side. All the other items in that panel are OK. How can I reset those links to point where I want.
Noticed that when we right click on a folder, we do not see the search option anymore in Vista. Instead, we can see a search bar on the top right hand side in Windows Explorer (After opening the Folder/drive contents) Is there a setting/registry tweak?
I can't seem to find Newsgroups for Windows 7, so I'm hoping to find an answer for my question here! I've installed Win7 on my laptop and want to customize the Start Menu's All Programs windows. I normally consolidate like programs/folders into one common folder to minimize the number of items on the All Program window (i.e. all Microsoft related items in one folder called something like Microsoft Programs). I can't seem to figure out how to do that in Windows 7.
I am the only user on my Vista Home Premium system. When I click Documents in the Start Menu, there are two Desktops - one at the top of folders and one under my Username. I am trying to figure out why there are 2 Desktops.
When you opened the run. Dialog in Win XP and started typing 'c:w' Windows automatically proposed you all folders and files under 'c:' starting with 'w'. The same was possible in explorer's address bar. This option seems to be gone in Win Vista. Is there a way to get this back? This was a really efficient way to find and open or run files or folders. I really miss this feature.
