Recommend An All In One Antivirus, Firewall, Etc.
Apr 13, 2008
Would anyone happen to be able to recommend an all in one antivirus, firewall, etc. that works with Vista well and doesnt have problems on the OS and also runs without using a lot of memory? I have Norton 360 v2 and System Mechanic 7 Pro, and i'm stuck on which or if either should be used on Vista?

1. AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 9.0 (Not Recommend): AVG Antivirus and Security Software - Download Free Antivirus
2. avast! Free Anti-Virus Edition: avast! Free Antivirus - Download Software for Virus Protection
3. Avira AntiVir Personal: Avira AntiVir Personal - FREE Antivirus
Please post if there are anymore free anti-virus editions. For #5 (Comodo Internet Security Suite), there is a bug. If you click the link, it will go to Comodo Anti-Virus, you can use Anti-Virus. If you want Internet Security, click it on the left side panel.

I am having a problem with knowing what works best with vista, i have vista home basic 32 bit and the laptop came with mcfee security center which i guess is anti virus and firewall etc etc...however my windows firewall says its running to and the mcfee i think is only valid for 30 days. my question is what is the best firewall and anti virus software to use? does the windows firewall work that well, if so people have said to download avast for full protection and leave it as it is.

Currently running Vista64 on a HP DV9500CTO laptop, fully loaded with almost every option avaliable from HP. I love it, First thing I did when I got the laptop about a month ago is wipe it and do a clean (with out all the HP pre-installed crapware). Running great. One thing I want to ask running Norton Internet Security 2008, and it seems to be slowing down the computer quite a bit. I am a road warrior, I travel a lot for work so I thought the Norton firewall would do a good job and seems to be fine, but again, it seems to be slowing down the system more than I like. I went through the walkthrough section here on the site (I have been lurking / reading a lot here and decided to fineally register my account) and have seen some improvement from the tips there, but the main question is this: What do you all reccomend for a good AV / Firewall product that wont kill performance on this thing.

I just got a new computer running Vista. I installed Norton Antivirus but in the "Norton Protection Center" I get an "At Risk" warning regarding the firewall. Specifically it reads "At Risk: Advanced Firewall". I have Windows Firewall tuned on, I don't understand what it is talking about when it says Advanced Firewall.

I have little idea of which one I should choose. So I wonder whether you guys can give me a hand to recommend me some kind of useful software.

Windows Vista Basic sp1. Im using a 3rd party firewall program. In Administrative Tools---Services it shows Windows Firewall status as Started. But, in Security Center it shows my 3rd party firewall being On but Windows Firewall being off. Also, in Administrative Tools---Windows Firewall with Advanced Security is showing Windows Firewall being on in Domain Profile. Is this normal? Why would one show Windows Firewall as On and another show it as Off?

I'm running Windows Vista 32 bit Home blah, blah, blah, with a NVIDIA GEForce 6150 graphics card. I have 2 monitors, but believe I need to purchase another video/graphics card. Anyone smarter than me out there (that was meant to be self depricating), that could recommend a plain jain, cheap graphics card so I can hook up my second monitor? I'm not into gaming, just love having two monitors at work, and once you have two, you can't handle one, right?

I would really love to hear you suggestions on what downloader manager(s) to use (even an add-on for Firefox). I just wanted to know because I asked my friends, and each use use different ones and cannot decide which can be called "the best" (if there is one)

Multiple support reps at Toshiba have told me that Toshiba does not recommend using the hibernate mode as it may damage the system board. They referred to it as "overhibernation" and they recommend only using the full shut down. Sounds screwy to me. Opinions please

Antivirus 360 is a rogue anti-spyware program that uses false scan results and aggressive advertising in order to promote itself. This rogue is advertised by the Vundo Trojan and is replacing the Antivirus 2009 rogue program that Vundo has been aggressively advertising. If you are infected with the Vundo Trojan you will see a large amount of pop-ups stating that your computer is infected and that you should install Antivirus 360 in order to protect yourself. If you click on the ad, Antivirus 360 will be downloaded to your computer and you will be prompted to install it.
Once installed, Antivirus 360 will be configured to start automatically when you start Windows. Once started, the program will perform a scan, and when done, will list a variety of legitimate or nonexistent files as infections that cannot be removed unless you first purchase the program. What is so dangerous about these scan results is that the files that Antivirus 360 states are infections are actually legitimate Microsoft files, that if deleted, will cause Windows to become unusable. Therefore, if someone believes the results from this program they may manually delete the files thinking they are infections and cause their computer to no longer function. Some files that it states are infections are:C:WindowsSystem32svchost.exe
C:WindowsSystem32alg.exe
While running you will also see a constant barrage of false security alerts stating that your computer has a variety of security risks. These risks range from files being modified to private data being sent to a remote host. These alerts, though, are false and are only being shown to further scare you into thinking your infected, when in fact the Antivirus 360 program is the actual infection. Unfortunately, these alerts coupled with the Vundo Trojan will affect your computer's performance and you will notice that it begins to operate slower.
