I've been having a recurring problem with several games installed on my system; the program installs fine, but I end up without a desktop shortcut, and the program doesn't appear in the start menu's list of programs. With Bioshock, for example, I need to put the disc in the machine in order to launch the game - and on the occasions when I've installed demos, and have no such disc, there doesn't seem to be any way in which I can get the thing to start. Is this another one of these bizzarre user permission things?
Also - when I look through windows explorer there are two program files folders, when in XP there was only one; one called program files, which seems to contain operating system stuff, and one called 'program files86' which contains everything that I've installed on the machine myself. Would this be anything to do with it?
I get this BOOTMGR missing message at startup and with some Googling I found it to be a common issue. So I tried the solution suggested by a ton of differnt sites - startup with the Vista DVD and choose the Repair option. The problem is that at the next step, Windows Vista doesn't show up as an OS in the System Recovery Options window! It's just blank so obviously when I pick "Startup Repair" nothing happens. It also says "If you don't see your OS, click on Load Drivers to load drivers for your hard drive." But if I do this I have no idea where to look and what to look for!
I have windows Vista Home premium, the Icons in the Help section are missing, also when I use Internet Explorer 7 it is the same. For example, if I vist this page with IE 7, all the left side menu and the top of the page are boxes with a red X in them, and they are all inactive.
I've noticed that I am missing quite a few icons from Vista. After shifting files around on my NAS, I noticed that the Show Desktop and Outlook icons had defaulted and now my quick launch look like this: and the favourite links in folders such as My Documents look like this: All the icons still appear to work but obviously something has changed and I cannot believe that moving rather a lot of files can do it (I might add during the process Windows did stop responding and failed to update the display until it had finished)
I bought my laptop about a year ago and it had Vista Home Premium pre-installed, it was not supplied with any installation disks. How can I install the Startup Repair Tool without the installation disk, or where do I get it from?
So a while ago, I installed a theme. It was some Alienware theme, some friend had recommended it. After a few days, I got bored of it and reverted my theme back to the default Windows Vista thingie. It was later I discovered it hadn't fully gone back to normal. Some folders icons were displayed as the Alienware ones. Not all, but only some. And they were all in the same area, my Documents folder, strangely. Anyways, I left it at that and since then it has really been bothering me and I've decided to get rid of it. One thing I did was go to the folder properties, go to that customize section, and set the icon to default. This worked for some folders, to my joy but it didn't work on some.
Another thing I discovered is the folders are only displayed like that on my particular user account, not on another one. I have tried deleting the icon cache or something like that, and I've used some program called Winbubble or something but nothing's been working. Any possible fixes or theories or whatever are welcome. A system restore isn't possible, as this, as mentioned, was a while ago.
I have the same problems as a lot of people, also with my network and sound my internet security icon also disapeares. Ive tried the fix in the registry but it just happens again later. I can reboot and everything is back but after awhile they just disapear again. I know is has something to do with SP1 because i didnt have this problem untill installing it. Recently i installed Vista x64 Ultimate and as i remember in startall programs there are two icons of internet explorer (32 and 64 bit) and WMP icon. Now that icons are gone. Is that because Opera is my default browser and Gom and winamp are default media players? Of course i think that this is not problem. I remeber that i deleted that icons from quick lunch but deleting them from quick lunch doesn't mean deleting tham from start menu, right? Wmp and IE can be started directly by typing wmplayer and iexplore in search but i want that icons back in startall programs!
my computer its nothing serious its just annoying and i want to fix it. the icons on the right side of the Start menu are now shown as folders and not the fancy one and i miss that, i was wondering if i can change them back? this all started a few days ago i think i caused it by doing something with CMD and some files showed up and i was deleting alot of them cause they looked like they were unnessasary, i think i deleted something that shouldnt of been deleted. now im just trying to figure out how to fix it with using system restore because i dont have the a restore point to fix that problem my restore points are deleted.
My video card died, and I had to use an old card with very limited memory. The emergency card did not support Aero. I installed a new ATI card with 512 MB onboard memory (a Radeon HD2600Pro AGP 8X card) which supports Vista. I got the Aero scheme back - transparency, etc., but the icons on the quick launch bar for 3D viewing of open windows or desktop are gone. Is there a way to get them back?
I can't get them back either by checking them in the Start Menu Properties as they are both grayed-out or by rebooting. I still have network & internet access and sound. Vista Ultimate SP1 x86.
For some reason the icons are missing on some programs in the "recently opened programs" list. Ive tried right click start menu and uncheck->check under privacy. If i create a shortcut to the program on the desktop, the icon reappears in the start menu.
PC has problem displaying flash drive icons correctly in file open and file save dialog boxes. There are 4 flash drives (Compact Flash, SD, Memory Stick, and xD/SM). The 4 drives'icons display fine from Windows Explorer but all 4 drive icons are missing in File Open and File Save dialog boxes. The problem exists in every application's file open and file save that I checked so I'm thinking it's a problem with Vista and not with specific application.
I am running Vista Home Premium. When I opened "Help and Support" all the icons are missing, although the links work okay. Has anyone else experienced this, and if so, is there a way to fix it?
I am running Vista 64 and installed a program which apparently had a virus or I got it using IE8. I found an entry in the start up tab that was causing a problem. I went into the registry and deleted the item from the startup tab and I also disabled it in the startup tab. The startup tab still shows the item even though it is disabled and deleted from the registry. Why does it still show in MSCONFIG and how do I delete it from the start up entry
all my desktop icons got suddenly changed to internet explorer icons,after (i opened some program in the internet,) then i did some personalisation then it changed to my adobe photoshop icon, all the desktop icons now shows the adobe,,icons.like all my programs which was earlier like (yahoo msngr, msn mesengr,windows vista programs,almost all other programs) and my internet wireless stopped working. i have a vista home premium 32. and my comp is asus f3t series. i was trying to do the icon cache, but couldnt find. tried restarting but couldnt solve.now trying to run my antivirus scan Mcafee. if anybody knows the solution to restore my earlier icons.
All of my picture icons were changed to standard-generic icons when I had my computer restored to the factory direct setting. Now they don't display anything except a flower, house, ect. My question is: How do I change the picture icon setting back so I can see a tiny preview thingy for each icon, instead of having to click on each one to see what they really are?
I have just puchased my first Windows Vista computer - an HP laptop. I have purchased at leat five laptops since 2000 so I am familiar with setup and comfortable with installations etc. I have three questions here.
1. My last computer had Windows XP and an 80 gb hard drive with 70 gb full - After copying the data only (55 GB) to my new 250 gb hard drive I have only 107 GB remaining of the 222 GB C drive partition. I have not yet added many programs. That tells me that Vista must be using 50-60 GB or more of the drive. Can that be correct?
2. My new computer takes 5-6 minutes to start up. After two minutes I get the welcome screen. Then the monitor goes black for a full two minutes before continuing the startup process. Is this normal for Vista?
3. Occasionally the monitor goes dark for a few seconds and a window pops up saying the display driver has failed but is back. Is this normal?
I certainly gained no speed with this new computer. There are many things I like about Vista. Since I have no previous experience with owning it I am trying to sort out if this computer is a lemon that should be returned or if I should just put up with the downside.
The last couple of days I had a few times a startup error. It said something like Windows couldn't start normally. Run Startup Recovery (Recommended) Start Windows Normally. I did the Startup Recovery and then it worked again but the next day or so the same thing, otherwise my system runs fine.
Desktop icons overwritten. After a recent automatic update it appears my desktop icons have two icons on top of each other. Visible on top is the "default" icon and slightly visible underneath is the original icon. I use Firefox and Vista Ultimate 32.
A Vista SP1 Home Premium problem - 9 live icons covering 9 dead icons: Several days ago I had a desktop with 9 live, working icons at the bottom of the desktop. ie: recycle bin, computer, network, control panel, etc. The 9th icon was a folder called 'powershell'.
Several days ago I deleted the 'powershell' folder, and, underneath that folder, was surprised to find a dead copy of the 'powershell' folder. The deleted 'powershell' folder was in the recycle bin, and an undeleted dead copy on the desktop. This dead copy cannot be accessed with selection, left-click, or right-click operations - so the 'Properties' info cannot be displayed.........
I've been using Windows Vista Premium for over a year now. So far I've no problems with it yet. However, just recently, I noticed that the icons for the computer and recycle bin were gone. Futhermore, the icon for some of the folders on my computer were either blank or a icon of the computer. Some files (ranging from the .dll to .exe) were changed to the computer icon as well. The icons for the floppy drive and my usb also disappeared and are displayed by the icon that represents file that windows does not recognise. How I can restore these icons? I have tried a system restore back a week when they were all still good but that did not make a difference.
There are icons infront of the real icons and i have no clue how to get rif of them i downloaded aliengiuse from alienware to change everything but this was the biggest mistake as you can see .
So I just traded out my year old Gateway laptop (which stopped working) for a new Dell Inspiron. I've never been particularly impressed with Dell but the Tech Guy at Best Buy assured me the quality of their laptops had improved. Anyway, it came with Windows Vista Home Premium. Since it was a Dell it came loaded with a stardock with mac-like icons instead of desktop icons. I like it so I customized it with the icons for the programs I use most, stared typing up notes for medical school with MS Word, and started downloading music files.
So the other day I notice strangely that the dock had reverted back to the original icons that were present when I first got the computer. Then I noticed all of the files downloaded/saved to the harddrive had disappeared. So I start anew adding files and replacing most of the old ones. Then suddenly yesterday the dock changes again back to how it was...customized and the files that I originally had reappeared but now the files I saved when it changed the first time are gone. So what is going on? Is this some kind of glitch in the OS? Is there something wrong with the actual computer? how get my files back?
I dl'd Mozilla Firefox a day ago, and everything dl'd correctly and completely. But, when I shut down the cpu, it wouldn't start up at all. I did every diagnostic i could let the cpu do, ran a system restore (went all the way back to 10/25/09 restore point). then, i got it to run in safe mode. played with start-up options, and got the desktop to come up in normal mode, but then got error msg 0x800106ba (windows defender won't load), this meant that none of my security stuff loaded either. i ran a chkdisc thing too, and it stopped when looking through file data (stopped at 16%). thus, i am running the cpu in safe mode with networking, and the cpu is running fine. i know this means that there is a file issue. but i am not sure how to find it.
i have begun to notice a particular startup item by the name of MSASCul.exe, now google has been confusing it with MSASCui.exe which turns out to be windows defender, so still somewhat confused i have obtained autoruns and tried a verification on msascul.exe only for autoruns to come back as not verified, googling so far the correct msascul.exe has brought little information up and would hopefully like some verification on if its a genuine executable or some little nasty i need to catch.
I purchased my system (Laptop, dual core HP Paviolion dv6700) and installed vista home premium in December 2008. In the beginning system's performance was good but now (within 6 months) it starts so slow. What may be the problem.
Hi, i am trying to use the startup repair function booting from my vista disc. I have set it in BIOS so that it boots from the cd/dvd drive first. I put the disc in and restart and when it comes up saying boot from cd/dvd press any key i do so. The problem is everytime i do that my pc just starts up normally and doesn't load the vista disc so i cannot get on the options and run startup repair.
