Vista 64 Installed Physical Memory Vs Total Physical Memory

Mar 26, 2009

I'm running Vista 64 Home (SP1) Premium on a homebuilt machine w/8GB (4 X 2GB modules). Windows is reporting 8 GB of Installed Physical Memory but is reporting only 4 GB of Total Physical Memory. I first noticed this when, after installing a game, the game system specs said 3092 MB of RAM.

I have checked the BIOS and it recognizes 8 GB. Memory Remapping is Enabled. Under Memory Remapping is "PCI MMIO Allocation: 4GB to 3328 MB" (?). MSConfig Boot Options shows Max Memory is not checked and no value in the box below. I tried enabling it and using 8192 as the value, but it made no difference. DxDiag shows 8 GB installed RAM. how I can get windows to make available all 8 GB of RAM? (Motherboard is ASUS Maximus II Extreme w/Intel Q9550 processor running at Q9650 clock speed, memory running at 1127 MHz

Installed Physical Memory

Jul 6, 2009

ive always ran XP but i heard from a friend that XP could only read up to 4gig of ram. So not wanting the ram to go to waste ive gone out and bought Vista Home Premium 32bit because he said vista could handle the ram.

After installation ive discovered that my installed physical memory is only 4GB Originally i thought maybe all the drivers have to be installed so i did that but still no difference. Then i googled it and ended up on vista forums, from what ive read 32bit can only handle up to 4gb but the 64bit can handle...well it didnt say a figure but just said "all of your ram".

Just wanted some clarification as to what i am reading is entirely true. And whether its worth going out and buying the 64bit edition. Also if i did go buy the 64 bit edition is it easily enough to just install it over the top of my current 32 bit?

8GB Installed But Only 4GB - 'Total Physical Memory'?

Mar 13, 2009

Hi all, I've just upgraded from 4GB to 8GB of RAM. When I look in system information its says the following:

Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 8.00 GB

Total Physical Memory 4.00 GB

Available Physical Memory 3.16 GB

I'm basicaly wondering why its says that I have 8GB installed but only 4GB - 'Total Physical Memory'? In Task manager - Performance, it says that I have 8GB of physical memory so it is being used.

Account Password Verification

Jun 16, 2009

In Vista Home Premium. I go to send an email (Win mail) and up pops a box asking for the password for the email account I am using. If I click cancel and then go to the outbox, open the email and resend, it goes through no problem. It will almost certainly do this if I have not used the computer for an hour or so (although all power saving are 'always on'). It always happens within ten mins of booting the computer in the morning. and is now happening more frequently at other times. I have scanned the computer for virus and malware etc - all clean, it's just annoying!

Installed Usable Memory, Destroy Desktop

Jan 3, 2010

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium (SP2), with 2 GB of RAM, Firefox, CA Security Suite, MBAB, SuperAntiSpyware Professional, Cleaner and Spybot search and destroy on an Acer Aspire T180 desktop. All WU's are current and the machine is working just great. About 6 months ago I noticed a reduction in the amount of usable installed emory. I have 2048 MB of installed RAM in 3 slots (512 MB, 512 MB and 1024
MB-with one slot empty), but only 1792 MB of usable memory. The usable installed/unusable installed difference is 256 MB. The difference may mean that some of it has gone bad or whatever. Is there anyway to ascertain why I'm not able to take advantage of the full 2024 MB of RAM? Is it possible one of the memory sticks is not plugged in correctly or there's a dirty contact somewhere? I realize that this may be a `don't fix it if it ain't broken' situation since the computer runs just fine but if there's something I can actually do to get back the missing 256 MB of RAM that'd be nice. I'm posting this here and also at: Microsoft.public.windows.vista.performance_maintenance since I'm not sure of the correct post location.

Exploring, Memory DiagnosticsIf Vista Detects A Memory

Feb 23, 2007

Memory DiagnosticsIf Vista detects a memory problem in your system such as a faulty RAM module, it will display a notification asking if you want Vista to try to diagnose the problem. Then again you may also recieve the sudden BSOD with the error MEMORY MANAGMENT at the top. Total Memory Available 3.3GB With 4GB Physical Memory Under Windows 7 64 Bit

Nov 29, 2009

I had 4GB physical memoryon the PC. With Windows vista 32 bit, available memory is shown as 3.3GB. I asked and was told that only under 64 bit windows, will the available memory be 4GB. When I upgraded to windows 7, I chosed 64 bit, but the available memory shown in the system is still 3.3 GB. Why is this and is there a way to make the full 4GB available? It's possible that my video card is using RAM instead of its own RAM. If I install a video card with its own RAM, will the full 4GB be available?

I have a problem with Vista Ultimate x64 SP1, I always seem to lose all my free RAM within an hour regardless of system activity, even while idling. I have noticed an svchost.eve process runs each time I reboot which seems to bloat constantly although when I close it down it only frees up about 800MB, what's happening to the rest of my 8GB??? When I launch Task Manager it says I'm only using 10% Memory but free RAM sits at 0?!?!

Out Of Memory And Needed To Free Up Memory?

Aug 23, 2008

I am fairly new to the forums, and VERY new to Vista x64. The machine is new, and I was trying out some apps and games, I was in Secondlife when I got an error messege saying I was out of memory and needed to free up memory. I shut down the app and restarted it. Runs but I watched Task manager and saw my free memory down to almost nothing after an hour or so. The cached seems very high.

I did alittle research and decided to set a second page file on my 1TB hard drive, (OS is on the other HHD's )( regulated by system for size ) I'm not really sure whats going on. Example of just task manager and this page openis attached. Again, any help would be great in getting the memory set up on here optimal.

Random Freezing: Re-installed, Windows, And It Froze After I Installed The Chipset Driver

Mar 30, 2008

My vista keeps locking up after various amounts of time, no matter whether its just idling, or im making the computer work hard. As ive read on other topics, I think its a driver issue, but I just dont know what to do. I will try another fresh vista install tomorrow and get the vista updates quickly to see whether that helps the situation. I have ensured it isnt overheating like it did initially when I bought the system, and it is now a safe and low temperature in a running state. Also, it only detects 3.5Gb of the 4Gb of RAM I have in my system. PC Spec:

Ive re-installed, windows, and it froze after I installed the chipset driver. I contiuned, and found a sound driver wasnt digitally signed. However it still crashes. I have got the latest drivers for it. For it to crash, all i did was open recycle bin, from idle state.

Trying 8GB Of Memory On 64?

Mar 23, 2008

I am putting together a new build and since PC-6400 DDR2 is sooo cheap I thought I might consider 8GB on an X38 board. I already have 2x2GB dimms, and was guessing if I went to 8GB it might be nice to have 4 identical DIMMS, which are still available (ie, another 2x2gb of the pair I have now). Anyone have wisdom about this? My main uses NOW are MS Flight Simulator, Gigastudio, and both of those benefit from at least 3GB, beyond that I don't know. I don't forsee video editing.

Not Enough Memory With 4 GB?

May 7, 2008

I just got Vista this april for the first time Vista Ultimate 64 bit to be precise. It came with a new computer that has 4GB of Ram...which I thought would be plenty, but apparently not? Right now I have 4 programs running: Sony Vegas, Zune, Firefox and MS Word. Including all the background tasks like firewalls and all that good stuff, it says I'm using 2.65 GB memory. Ok I still have about 1.4 GB left right? Wrong...I have 12 MB?

2000 MB are cached. Whats up with that? Now Sony Vegas keeps crashing because I dont have enough ram and I cant open Windows media Player because I dont have enough ram....What happened to all my memory?

SP1 32 Bit Memory

Jan 11, 2009

I've spent the last 2 weeks trying to confirm this. With Vista 32bit SP1, is it true that it will not only see the 4 gigs of ram installed, but use all 4 gigs as well? I've had gamers tell me that the OS will show the 4 gigs installed, but that was the only thing Sp1 did. It still can use only around 3.21 gigs.

I've also had system builders say that Vista 32bit SP1 will both show the 4 gigs, and use ALL 4 gigs. Both swear that they are right and the others don't know what they're talking about. I've built a new gaming rig and I have an OEM copy of Vista HP SP1 32 bit, and I want to be sure that I'm not wasting the 4 gigs I have installed, but I can't seem to get a consistent answer from everybody.

only controversy. Even two different MS MVP's gave me two different answers. I'm almost to the point of calling MS tech. support and asking for their best Vista tech. specialist to find out for sure. This is getting ridiculous.

Why Does 64 Use More Memory Than 32

Feb 4, 2008

I am currently running both Vista 64 and Vista 32 on two different drives and I notice that when booted, 64 uses almost 1.2 gig of RAM while 32 uses only about 800meg when booted. The only thing I have on 64 that I don't on 32 is iTunes and the Adobe CS3 suite. Is this normal? If so, why does 64 use more memory than 32? I do have superfetch on for both installs - could it be this that is using the extra memory - preloading iTunes/CS3 apps maybe?

Memory Not Being Used?

Mar 5, 2009

I have a dell xps 600 that originally came with xp pro. 2.8 dual core and 1 gig memory. I was doing a lot of audio multi tracking and wanted to up my memory to help out with some latency problems I was having. the xps600 manual said that the mobo could handle 2 gig on 32bit and 8 gig on 64bit so I upgraded to vista ultimate and installed 8 gig. everything runs great and this solved my latency problems but there is one thing I noticed.

I use a G15 logitech keyboard which has a CPU and RAM monitor built into the LED window on the keyboard. This monitor tells me that I am usually using only 20% of my ram. Even when I am multitasking and using huge files, it never goes above 36% of ram usage. My pagefile is system managed and usually around 8.5gig at idle. Why isn't Vista utilizing more of my ram and is there a tweak

Is Not Using All Ram Or Memory

May 1, 2009

Alright with many games that I'm playing with. There are a few things that are going on that I'm not liking. Yes I know I play Gunz The Duel, and it seems like there is screen lag or something, maybe a delay, not sure what to call it. People were telling me about all the Services that Vista uses slows it down or such like that. Is that true? Or is there another way to fix it. I also play Crysis, and problem with that game, is that it isn't using all of my RAM or memory? It only uses so much, and just leaves the rest alone. Anyway way to make it use more? Also the game supports Dual processors. I have Quad, is there a way to make it use all four of them? Also just with any games, is there a way to just make the games run faster at all without killing the graphic, cause I know my PC can handle the graphics, it just seems like my PC isnt using everything that I put into it.

Tends To Eat Up Memory

Apr 10, 2009

I'm pretty new to vista since I got my hp laptop(vista home premium x64)and I've noticed that it tends to eat up some memory. I opened up task manager before and i was using 31% after startup and after I open up a few applications and run for a bit it seems not to go much lower than 35%. Right now the only application I have running is firefox and I'm using 40%. granted there is processes running in the background such as hp stuff, anti-virus, and anti-spyware stuff along with rocketdock. but that stuff is also on after startup. Is vista always eating this much memory up like this for everyone? also, is there anyway to use less?

Physical Memory/RAM

Jun 30, 2008

I have an HP Desktop Pavilion m8150n, Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600, Windows Vista Ultimate (32), 4GB RAM, 640GB hard drive, NVIDIA GeForce 8400GS. I have upgrade Vista with sp1. I have been having some problems with my pc hesitating when I'm clicking on things in a game. I have just recently upgraded my memory from 3 to 4GB, thinking this would solve my problem. It hasn't. When I go into the Task Manager, it shows Physical Memory (MB) Total 3581, Cached 2730 and only 56 Free. Is this my problem? I have a long list of processes and services running and I'm sure I don't need all of this running at the same time. This could also be causing my problem, but not sure. I have shut down some of these processes, but I'm not sure which ones I actually need to run the computer. This problem is extremely frustrating. I have 211GB free on my hard drive and the box is checked for Index drive for faster searching. I would be happy to provide any other information.
