When I'm running Windows Explorer and (single) click on a folder name in the nav panel, the contents are displayed properly in the other panel BUT the folder doesn't expand in the nav panel like it does with XP. To force it to expand I have to click the '+' sign next to it. Is there someway I can make Explorer behave like it does in XP? Am I missing a setting somewhere?
View 9 RepliesI have set up a network but I can't expand either my computer's folder or the other computer on the network in order to access files that are in the public folders. I get the following error message "You might not have permission to use this network. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permission. The specified network provider name is invalid. In additon to this issue I have tried to share my C drive which when I go into computer and then right click on my C drive and then try to share the files through advanced, the box is check to share, but it remains showing unshared after I have done so.

I cannot expand my system partition even with unallocated space on the drive sitting there unused. For example, i have a 750gb sata system drive which is partitioned into 3 spaces, my system partitionn, my media partition and unallocated space partition, i wanted to add this 100gb of unallocated space to my system partition so that it will have some headroom and space for further programs if need be. However vista ultimate's disk management does not allow this like partition magic used to. Of course partition magic is not compatible with vista[hurray] so i need compatible software to do so

Start PreviewConfig and you can view all of the currently registered preview filters on your system for the different file types. Adding a new file type to register a preview for is as easy as just typing in the extension and then selecting the type of viewer.
PreviewConfig works great for text based files that windows does not recgonize by default. For example, .NFO or programming language files such as .vb or .cs.....
The AppData folder doesn't appear in the folder list below c:usersernie. i have the option checked to show hidden folders. What else can it be?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am moving my Documents , Pictures, and Music folders associated with the start menu on the right side of start menu (under the user pix) to a seperate partition on the hard drive so that it will be easier to back up these files monthly, and also allow me to create an image disk of the os without all the data files being included. Going very smoothly except that I stupidly deleted the music folder after I had moved the files, and now when I click the music tab on the start menu, it no longer directs to where the music files have been moved. The Pictures and Documents tabs work correctly...that is, when I click those tabs on the start menu, I am taken to their new location just fine.
My question is, is there some way to re-create that original Music folder which , when I right-click properties, has the tab for LOCATION which will then allow me to change its location settings so that the Music tab on the start menu can find it ? Seems to be a special type of folder, and if I just create a new one, it does not include the Location tab under properties. I should add that I can create a shortcut and pin it to the start menu, but if possible, I'd like to use the original Music tab on the right side of start menu.
Im having some problems with my personal folder. When i go to it all the thumbnails have no information under them: when I go to a folder at a different location it has the information under each large thumbnail: When I go and access my personal folder the "long way" by going to COMPUTER>C DRIVE>USERS>ELENA I can see the information. I have no idea why this happened. I remember I was cutting and pasting things to that folder, but I must have pressed something on my keyboard by accident and the mouse was stuck on select. Then I restarted and this happened. How can I get the text under the large thumbnails to appear again? Going to "View" doesnt work by the way.

today, my supplier tested the motherboard in front of my eyes, and it worked fine THERE.
they said maybe it is your graphics card's driver (HD 4870) that makes this problem. so i came home, uninstalled the VGA driver and ATI HD Audio driver and STILL NO SOUND my speakers are fine (i tested them with another pc and with my mp3 player) and i installed the latest drivers for everything.
i also e-mailed Realtek technical support last week, and they didnt answer!
i asked in 3 or 4 other forums (tomshardware, anandtech, guru3d....) no one could help me
if u need to know anything, please let me know and here are some pictures, maybe they can help u to figure out what is wrong with my pc

using vista windows mail program it marks almost all incoming e-mail as spam, it does not move them to junk mail folder for which I am grateful I have added senders to safe list and marked not as spam but it still continues to mark as spam how can I get it to stop
View 4 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded my XP home edition to Vista home premium with an upgrade disk provided by Dell. Before the upgrade I uninstalled my HP 2575 printer and software because it was listed as a compatibility issue. After upgrade I reinstalled new software from HP for my printer from the HP website. I plugged in the USB cable from my printer. Vista recognized the new device but would not put it in the printer folder in the control panel. Vista did find driver software online but could not install it. The HP solution center tells me no HP devices have been detected. When I try to print I get a message that I don’t have a printer hooked up. That’s the back ground here is what I have done.
I have updated Vista; most were successful some security ones failed. I have Service pack 1 I uninstalled and reinstalled HP software many times I started my spooler and reinstalled printer and software many times. I checked Task Manager and the hpqste08 services are running. I uninstalled virus protection and turned off the firewall. I have done everything I can find at HP, Microsoft and here. I tried to reload Vista but got a Worker Thread Returned at Bad IRQL error message so I stopped reload.
The one odd thing I did find was in the Device Manager. In the Device Manager the HP 2575 is listed twice. Once under IEEE 1284.4 compatible printer and once under Other Devices. When I click on the one under IEEE 1284.4 compatible printer and update driver software it finds the driver and says it’s up to date. When I do the same on the one under Other Devices, windows finds the software for this device but encountered an error when trying to install it. It does this when looking online and when looking in C: drive.The printer still does not show up in the printer folder in the control panel.
I'm very disappointed that windows mail doesn't support folders in the contact area. I hope some one from Microsoft see this and they reconsider putting a update to re add this feature. I just got this computer and already I want to send it back. I really need folders to keep my contacts sorted. Either add the option or let me download the old Outlook to install. And buying Office outlook is not a option.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have had Windows Vista 64 for 2 Months now and of that period of time it worked soundly for about 2 Weeks. I am NOT an irresponsible User, I don't just delete Data, I know a little something about computing, I don't visit or download from dubious sites etc.
1) Without any reason software suddently doesn't work.
a) I installed a Antivirussoftware - after 3 Weeks it suddently didn't work any more (Kaspersky) I couldn't reinstall it.
b) I installed a new Antivirussoftware - after 5 days it didn't work anymore.
c) 4 days later I started to get errormessages "Windows Defender doesn't work any more" - "Windows Hostprocess doesn't work anymore"
Just installed Vista RC1 yesterday on my Packard Bell R0900 Notebook. Everything went well with the install, until it came to the performance test... I let it run for 1,5 hours and nothing seemed to happen (screen went black in the beginning, but that was all). So I decided to not let him do the test (after a hard reboot). And all looked fine, except for:
- Opening windows give a big lag (like control panel). It takes about 5 sec to load one window!
- Same for the start menu...
- On fading when for example vista asks whether you will allow something to run, makes it lag alot too... (Same when shutting down or logging of (the fade takes like 20 secs).
- When typing something, it takes like 3 secs to show the first letters...
how to set up the folder options to display the number of subfolders or items when its selected. It used to display in the bottom of the folder window but got disabled. Any folder clicked on would display in a small footer the number of items stored in in and size.

I am using Vista ultimate x64bit.
Suddenly I cannot access the control panel or vista update or Backup,also the shortcut to Administrative tools is no longer there.
I have searched in vain with google and have not found a solution to this problem.
I cant open the control panel on my system either fron the desktop shortcut or the start menu. I did think it may be a driver issue after i upgraded my 8800gtxoc2 to the latest nvidia driver. I decided to do a system restore to just before i did the instalation, but after 6 attempts on several restore points they have all failed. I have strated my comp up in safe mode and removed the driver but the problem is still there. i have restarted the software licence but i am stuck now and need some advice before i bite the bullet and reformat. Using the origional vista disk is there a way of doing a re-instal without losing my data.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI did a clean install. (RC1 - Build 5600) At first, everything was working great, then the next day I have nothing in Control Panel. From the Start Menu it says (empty) after attempting to load it for 20-ish seconds. If I click the desktop shortcut, it will load the window frame with no content, then just close after 5 seconds. In Windows Explorer I can expand the Control Panel from the sidebar, and pick from there, but just selecting Control Panel, again doesn't work. I remember this being corrupted .cpl files back in the 3.x days, same thing maybe? I ran System File Checker, didn't fix it (did find corrupted files though, oi vey).

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a weird problem with my Vista partition and my creative x-fi xtreme PCI express card. Drivers / control panel can detect my headphones being plugged into the port in my front panel. If I do a channel test I can hear the "left channel" / "right channel" test audio track play through the headphones. But for the life of me, no matter what I do, I can not get normal windows sound (media player, power dvd etc...) to go through the head phones when they are plugged into the front panel and it's driving me crazy. I've set headphones to be the default play back device but nothing.
What kills me is that if I boot into my windows XP partition, everything is fine. The speakers are even muted when I plug my headphones in and sound comes out of them perfectly. Am I doing something wrong? or is it just a driver bug? I'm using the latest vista drivers (via creative update). I'm running 64 bit Vista business by the way
