Disconnect External Drive Blue Screen
Sep 3, 2009When I disconnect my external drive via the safely remove hardware icon I end up with a blue screen. I am currently using vista 64 bit operating system.

To Resume Vista From Hibernate Without Having Disconnect External HD?
Mar 21, 2008I have my computer run an automatic backup each night to my USB connected external hard drive then automatically hibernate. However, I always need to remove the USB connection to my external HD before turning my computer on in the morning, or else it would just display a blinking dot when turned on. When I do forget about removing the external hd, I am forced to manually shutdown the computer. Once its turned back on, I get a message saying the resume from hibernate wasn't successful, and it asks me if I want to retry or delete the hibernation file. I choose to retry (having already disconnected the HD) and Vista resumes fine. I'm wondering how to resume Vista from hibernate without having to always disconnect my external HD prior to turning it on. The external hard drive is Western Digital and I'm using Vista Service Pack 1. Also, my sister's laptop resumes fine from hibernate with the external HD plugged in. One last thing, my computer resumes fine when put to sleep with the external HD plugged, its only hibernate that this happens.

Dec 8, 2009machine came with vista home premium now have service pack 2 updated, when i try to use a floppy drive for back up or restore i get blue screen, if i go to safe mode the floppy is ok, i also have an external floppy same thing will not work under vista but will work in safe mode, i have also replaced the internal floppy same thing, so i am saying it looks like vista sounds like vista, are there any patches for this problem.

Oct 19, 2009I'm running Vista Home Premium x64. Yesterday i installed SP2 and after the reboot from that i realised i had the Relevant Knowledge spyware on my startup. I managed to restart in safe mode and removed the relevant knowledge from startup on msconfig and uninstalled it as a program. Following another reboot i noticed that my TV tuner and audio drivers were no longer recognised in the device manager, i also ran a spybot search and destroy to remove any remnants of the relevant knowledge. I guessed that the service pack had probably stopped the tv driver working (as this had happened in the past) so i uninstalled the SP 2.
Following the reboot i got the blue screen of death, but was able to boot from my Vista CD to repair windows, this went through a series of checks but found no memory problems, following yet another reboot i got taken to the system startup and chose to boot into safe mode just to make sure, this was unsuccessful. Things have gone from bad to worse, my cd drive is connected by USB and this is no longer recognised so i cant even boot from cd, and no matter how i choose to start the computer (safe mode, with networking, command prompt, last known good config) the computer just restarts and brings me back to the same screen. I know that this is not good, but would prefer to try and fix myself rather than pay to have it done, any solutions?

Working beautifully for many months, and then a few
weeks ago this began happening:
Perhaps 2-3 times a week, and with no consistency of circumstances, a blue screen will appear. It might happen while working or when returning from hibernate. There's a countdown as memory is stored, and then a freeze. The only way to recover is to do a hard OFF (5 seconds on the power switch) and restart. When it first happened, I had not installed or changed anything, so I was comfortable doing a restore. It happened again.
It's confusing because the stated cause is inconsistent. I've checked to ensure that all drivers are updated and nothing that's contraVistarian is installed. What analytical steps can I undertake to discover what's causing this, and then to help me make the necessary changes?

Feb 13, 2009Problem Blue Screen. No new hardware or software installed recently, last Windows vista update was on 01/15. When I start first, PC passes user registration (boots fine) and
does the normal stuff like loading software and starting the wireless internet connection via Netgear, opening some windows/programms I will close. All normal, but than comes a Blue Screen and very fast shut down of system with restart. Hardly can read the message...Look like Blue Screen appears when to much action is going on like opening of IE and Outlook... or open to many windows... or some bad programm/hardware is booting. But when I restart, restart gives a different blue screens and trouble is much earlier or directly after registering to the system.
But all starting or booting turn slower, real slow now. Start in --safe mode with net working-- the PC works, but the PC can't handle heavy workloads, is really slow in action. I cannot open --My pictures-- to see all picture files displyed on screen (2.7 GB) (the process trying to access the files in safe mode is real slow) and when I attempt to transfer the file to a USB stick, the computer is stopping in middle of action (after 50% transfer)..........

Jun 5, 2008I've been doing a clean install of Vista x64 for about a week and have been getting many random blue screens of deaths yesterday I did another clean install and only had about 4 drivers or so installed and I got a BSOD but no dump file was created for some reason so I kept installing more drivers and it work for about 4 hours till it crahsed again this time it gave me a dump file so here are the results.......

Oct 6, 2009I was starting my computer today (that has Vista), and during the start up process, a black screen came up stating that there was an error opening up my external hard drive and it was checking for errors. After it finally booted up, I went to open the hard drive files, and it was totally BLANK! I then restarted the computer, and still the hard drive is EMPTY! I had ALL my important files in there!
The ONLY thing that looks promising is that when I go to Start then to Computer, it shows the hard drive there, and it still shows that 43GB are free of 111GB of storage (same info shows by right clicking on it and going to Properties). Why would it show this if nothing is on the hard drive anymore? Is there ANYWAY to recover these files again you think???? I NEED those files!!!! Remember that the hard drive STILL PHYSICALLY WORKS. It's just that I cannot access the files on my pc at the time for some reason.......

May 21, 2008I just bought and installed a external hard drive. I am fairly knowlegable about computers but this is my first Ex. Hard drive and know very little about there use. So what I want to know is how to save my Family Tree Makers files to it. And once I do that how do I know for sure it is opening from my new drive and not my computer C: drive? I saved it to a DVD one time but when the time came when I needed it all that was there was a short cut but no files.

Feb 1, 2009I've had voltage issues causing my computer to freeze or reboot during games and dvds. Fixed that and the computer was fine after memtest showing no problems. That was late Dec.
A few days ago, the computer would go to a blue screen saying it's dumping physical memory and then automatically reboots. Thinking my harddisk might be collapsing on me (I have a seagate barracuda 7200.11 500Gb HD with the SD15 firmware, the infamous crash friendly HD), I flash the HD with the SD1A firmware from seagate, then it was fine. 2days later, Catalyst started to cause problems by not responding, so I formated the drive and reinstalled vista ultimate, along with Catalyst, drivers from Mobo manufacturer ASUS, plus a couple of other softwares. That was yesterday, and now I'm getting the same blue screen back, or the computer just freezes.

My one guess is its something to do with the display driver maybe because that has been stuffing up a bit of late, in the way of the screen going black for a couple of seconds then recovering.
USB Drive Or External Hard Drive
Sep 8, 2009I have Windows XP and Vista. I always go through "safely remove hardware" before pulling off USB drive on XP. However, I have been trying to do the same on Vista, it seems that I cannot do the same as XP. For instance, I plug in my USB on Vista and it appears as H drive on Vista, when I am ready to do "safely remove hardware", I don't see the device drive H is on the "Safely remove hardware" window, so I cannot stop the H drive. I am concerned about the Vista hardware.

However he wants it to show up and display as the left hand screen in the format 2) 1) with 1) remaining the primary display and the task bar not changing screens also with the mouse moving to the left hand screen by moving left.
This never works. if he connect external screen VISTA decides the screens should be connected 1)2) and you have to move right to get to the left hand screen. you have to move the screen in display setup to get this right but then vista will screw up and make the left hand external display the primary etc. Is there no way to get vista to remember that the external display should be 2) and not primary and also to make it the left hand screen in the desktop while not becoming the primary screen and taking the taskbar and start menu.
X64 Random Blue Screen At Log In Screen, But Before Log In
Feb 5, 2010I've had pretty good luck with vista so far but every so often it will blue screen on me and I cant figure out why. The scenario is
1. System startup from power off condition
2. System boots to login screen
3. Blue screen referencing processor timing or something
I have not overclocked or anything everything is vanilla. I would also note that I run hardware diagnostics utilities and it seems fine. Also, I never get the message about abnormal system termination like ususal. How can I get a clue as to what is going on here. So far it seems like the error is bogus, I can log in and the machine will run for days with no problem.
External Hard Drive
Mar 23, 2008I recently bought a western digital 1TB hard drive which I had to reformat before I could use. Everything works good now, except for onething. Sometimes the computer doesn't want to restart while the new drive is plugged in. If I remove it from the USB port prior to restarting, it will restart just fine.
It shuts down and turns on without an issue. This only happens when I
restart the system with it plugged in.
So while it's not a big issue,it is an annoyance.

disk management and do format and partition. I messed up and deleted the
drives volume. Now it is not listed in disk management. I looked everywhere

External Drive Can Not Be Formated
Apr 24, 2010For some reason, It's unable to either normally format any external memory devices into a FAT or FAT32 format, or unable to read it at all. I keep trying to open the device but it keeps saying that i need to format it, but because of problem 1, it can't be formated (it almost completes but the process shuts down, stating that it can't be formated). This problem has been happening for the longest time and I really need this fixed.
When I say external memory devices, i mean CDs, DVDs, Flash drives, SD cards, memory card readers. Everytime I check the disk management of these devices, it says they are Primary Partitioned (which is the normal status right?). And the only thing that seems to be the problem is the RAW file system (which I heard windows doesn't read). However, the wierd thing is if I plug in something like a USB mouse, or a camera, it has full functionality (I.E. the mouse works/files are reachable on the camera). I then tried to format it using the cmd lines, and tried to format it to FAT32, but after it says 100% formated, and i try to use it again, Disk Management tells me that it's back in RAW format.

May 17, 2009i have simpletech 160gb external drive. i cannot access my external drive,i can see the drive but i cannot access it i dont want to format because lots of important file are in it. when i check it from disk management right click the drive E: then on the property windows i choose tools clik the check now boton. it gives me error "The disk check could not be performed because Windows cannot access the disk."

Jul 29, 2009I am in need of assistance concerning my external hard drive. My hard drive has been working flawlessly for the past 3 years. As of today, my computer no longer recognizes it. This is what I have done so far:
-Unplugged it, plugged it back up, and my computer made a chime saying that it was recognized and said that it was ready to go.
-However, the HDD does not show up on the my computer tab.
-I removed the HDD from its enclosure, purchased a USB 2.0 to SATA/IDE and tried uploading the HDD to my wife's computer. Once again, her computer chimed saying that it was recognized (she runs XP, i have vista), but, once again, the hard drive was not in the my computer folder.
-I then proceeded to Computer Management, Disk Management, and noticed that my external hard drive is not there either.
I thought that maybe intially my power cord to the outlet in the wall just went bad, but after I bought the USB to SATA/IDE adapter and it still didn't work...well, I ran out of options.

Dec 14, 2008Ever since I switched to Windows Vista Enterprise Edition 32 Bit I have been having some problems with my dual-monitor set up. My computer is a Fujitsu Tablet PC and is about 2 years old, and my external monitor is a Samsung SyncMaster941BW. For some reason once I go and use the intel display options and set up the extended desktop everything appears to be fine. However when the Windows Vista security screen pops up asking for you permission for a specified action it gets rid of my extended desktop and just kicks everything back to only my laptops display. This also happens when restarting the computer and doing "Ctrl + alt + delete" to open the task manager. It is extremely frustrating and I was wondering if anyone else had this problem? I am not sure if it is just a problem with vista or if I need a new driver since updating from xp, even though my computer says it is the latest driver for the monitor.

and on my old laptop that my dad has it's a 2gb compaq presario

and click install vista
will it be like a new laptop?
there's nothing needed on the laptop

Access Folder On External Drive
Feb 20, 2010I am using Robocopy to backup photos and music files to a local network connected 1TB Western Digital drive. The initial backup worked for both tasks. This is the command line in the .bat Robocopy C:UsersOwnerMusic ecordings \externaldrivepublicBackUp-Music ecordings /S /COPYT /MIR /Log:MusicBkupLog.txt Now, the subsequent backup for my music folders fails on a specific folder with error: ERROR 5 (0x00000005) Deleting Extra File \externaldrivepublicBackUp-Music ecordingsAmbroseNewA Fine Romance-Browne.mp3 Access is denied. The process stops there. Subsequent folders are not backed up. The ownership for that folder looks suspect: nobody (Unix User obody)
Other folders that work have owner as: administrator (EXTERNALDRIVEadmin) I can not change the offending folder's owner. I have tried the following as administrator: Properties > Security > Advanced > Owner > Edit > change owner to I get access denied. And with DOS from an administrator command prompt: takeown /f S:BackUp- MusicRecordingsAmbroseNew RMDIR /S S:BackUp-MusicRecordingsAmbroseNew I get access denied. I can access the directory so my path must be correct: dir S:BackUp-MusicRecordingsAmbroseNew How can I change ownership or delete the offending folder?
