Cannot Change, Rename Or Delete Folders

Jan 18, 2010

I think this is now getting a common problem but microsoft havn't solved it (unless you know different?) I cannot change, rename or delete folders and now the recycle bin won't empty! (The recycle bin issue is more recent) Explorer hangs when i try to alter or add new folders. I have to use Ctrl, Alt and delete to re-boot explorer and cancel the operation. Once this is done you notice the file has been re-named and or the folder deleted but this is only after the "explorer hanging" has been cleared.

Rename Or Move Select Folders

Apr 19, 2009

Running Vista32 Home Prem, SP1. I run as administrator. I do NOT use any registry cleaners. I am not able to rename or move select folders. Even though they have been shared (as described below), the renaming and moving attempts have been only from the computer and account that initially created them. Have a folder (with many sub-folders) that I have been sharing without problem across my home network (don't know if the sharing is related to the renaming issue). A few weeks ago I found that the root shared folder and one of its sub-folders could not be renamed or moved, though I can still rename sub-sub-folders and create and modify files contained in any. I don't know if this is a recent development; it may be that that was the first time I felt the need to rename of more them.

I applied the "Take Ownership" merge from this forum to add take ownership to the context menu. I then applied the 'take ownership' at the root of the share. Even though the command window showed activity (and I could see 'success' or 'successful' repeatedly), afterward I still was not able to rename the root share or that one sub-folder. I then did 'take ownership' again for just the sub-folder; again the command window showed activity, but afterward still could not rename the sub-folder. And just to repeat, I was and am still ABLE to rename the sub-sub-folder. Thinking that maybe the network sharing was impacting this, I then removed the share capability AND the security settings from the shared root. Repeated take ownership; but no change. I then downloaded from this forum the "Fix_Rename_32_Bit_ Vista" registry merge and applied it. Tried again to rename the root share and the its sub-folder; again failed.

Not Allowing You To Delete/rename Certain Files

Jul 29, 2009

Are there certain files crucial to Vista, that you are not allowed to delete/move/rename?

If so, would explorer.exe be one of them?

I had an incident where I tried to create a desktop shortcut forWindows Explorer. I don't know why but the shortcut had ".exe" at theend. When I tried to rename it, it warned me about something, as if Iwas renaming the actual program and not just a shortcut.

I usually make a shortcut for a program by dragging the name from the Start menu to the desktop. Then it will have the name of the program with no .exe.

Not Authorized To Delete Or Rename Own Files

Apr 18, 2009

We're new at working under Vista Home Premium SP1. My daughter was working as a standard user and found that she was not authorized to delete or rename her own files. She had to log off, then switch to an dministrator in order to do this. (Administrator couldn't do anything either until standard user logged off.). It makes sense that a standard user should not be able to manipulate files of another user, but you'd think that she should be authorized to deal with her own files. Is there a parameter to allow this?

Windows - Cannot Delete, Move, Rename Or Files

Aug 2, 2009

I have had this problem for a while now, and it has really started to wind me up lately. I have read many threads and tutorials, and tried some out aswell, but nothing has worked unfortunately. Whenever I try to move or delete a file, the box comes up:

But then once that pops up nothing else happens, and it just freezes. I have tried leaving it for a while and seeing if it just takes time but also nothing happened. Even if I click cancel, it freezes. To close the window, I have to go into the task manager and close it from there, which restarts Windows Explorer. When renaming a file or folder, I can type the name I want in, but once I press enter Windows Explorer freezes and I have to go into task manager again.............

I have recently changed a folder name to an alt code which shows up as a blank space. It shows up as this without parenthesis.() Now that I've done that I can't move the file to anywhere, rename it, and I can't delete too. I right click it and hit delete but no confirmation comes up asking if I want to or not. No message saying it's in use or anything. If I try to rename it it reverts back to the invisible characters. I also can't move the file to anywhere else from my desktop. I've been trying for awhile now can't do anything with it

Cannot Delete Folders

Nov 11, 2009

My friend has a Vista Home Premium (32bit) Dell desktop with SP2 installed - and all other updates installed as of this moment in time. A month or so ago he created 3 sub-folders in his Video folder. These are empty and have not, as far as I am aware, been used. When I say they are empty I mean there are no files inside. I have noticed that there are some sub-folders, which are also empty. I am now trying to delete these folders (and sub-folders) - and each time I get the msg "Cannot delete this folder - item cannot be found" - and the delete fails. So far I have tried this with elevated rights to Admin, in Safe Mode, and using the command prompt - all without success. I have scanned the hard disk with MSEssentials - fully up to date, and found nothing. At the moment I am running CHKDSK to see if there an error on the disk - but halfway through there are no reports of an error so far.

Delete Folders Which Vista Says I Don

Apr 21, 2009

I have several folders on one of my drives which I cannot delete. Vista responds that I don't have permission, yet I am logged in as the administrator with full rights.

1. Folders are not in use.
2. They are on an external 750GB USB-2 based drive (NTFS).
3. I also tried to delete them from an XP based system to no avail.

How can I get rid of these folders? There must be a simple way to do this without having to mess with the permissions. After all, I am, supposed to have "god rights". That is, I am the administrator of my home system with full RWMD rights.

Computers used:
Main computer: Vista Business SP1 (x32)
Laptop: XP Home SP3 (x32)

Won't Let Me Delete Files And Folders.

Mar 23, 2008

Certain files (like exe files) and folders (if they contain exe files) just can't be deleted. I get "You need permisson to do this". I'm the Administrator and only user of the machine. I tried activating and logging in a the "hidden" Administrator, but that didn't help at all.

I 've tried with UAC on and off. With it on I get the joy of clicking about 6 times before I end up with the "you need permission" (shouldn't that be checked first??) No wonder people turn that "feature" off.

I can rename the exe files and usually delete them after a reboot, isn't that very strange?

- Media Player was broken, but seems to work now, it actaully stops playing when you close it.

- I've been getting a "Parts of Logos has stopped working" or something like that error message at every startup for the last weeks.

- Sleep mode worked the first week only. Now it never wakes up.

- IE7 crashes at least once a day.

I've used XP for years and it was never this broken.

Change Default Email In File Folders

Feb 14, 2010

I have two versions of Eudora on my PC but only one (Eudora 8 beta) is recognized in file folders that contain *.jpg files (as of today).

Before today, I would highlight a JPG and click on Email at the top of the open folder. Eudora 7.1 would come up and all I had to do was put in an email address. I should say that I use Eudora 7.1 with two sets of data - one for me and one for my wife.

However, my wife's version would come up which is what I want. As of today, Eudora 8 beta comes up when I click on Email. I have no idea how the association changed.

I also don't know why my wife's version of Eudora 7.1 used to come up instead of mine.

There must be a way to reset the association. I tried resetting the association in Internet Explorer - but only Eudora 8 beta is available as a choice. That's another problem. Why isn't Eudora 7.1 a choice in file associations in Internet Explorer 8?

Delete MovieMaker, PhotoGallery, Games/etc Crap Folders Which Are Inaccessible

Jun 11, 2009

I was able to delete MovieMaker, PhotoGallery, Games/etc crap folders which are inaccessible or @least undeletable for normal people. I can delete Windows itself, of course won't ever do that, but theoretically I defeated every shiled that prevents normal people to fully control their "assets". My point is not to brag about it or advertise pointless actions. I am just happy I own this laptop & every bit of harddisk except Bootsector (which I can still penetrate with special binary tools).

Things people think can't be done, can be done if you have brains. Also since I hate WinLiveMail and all Live applications, I forced regular WinMail to work under WIndows7 RC; I am sure when Windows7 comes out I won't be bothering with LiveMail horrendous crapware. WinMail will work here, ideally I want OutlookExpress but... there's a technical problem that prevente dme from forcing it run under Windows7 (too long to explain). Or I might simply start using Outlook which's been idle in my MSOffice2007,except it's too bloated and makes me feel bad about losing good old OE. So folks, you can access and delete things, dont ask me how b/c Microsoft who runs these forums will not appreciate, I just can do whatever.... it's my laptop after all.

Delete File And Folders UAC Messages "administrator Rights"

Nov 12, 2009

I restored my vista OS using a system image utility provided by Alienware. It created a backup folder on the c drive with all the old files in it, including user profiles. I changed the owner of all files and folders back to my account and tried to delete it, but got the UAC messages that I need to allow administrator rights to do so. After clicking yes, I got a message that permission was denied with the only options of "Try Again" or "Cancel". After making visible all hidden files and folders, I was able to drill down to the one file I could not delete. I've used the "take ownership" steps in Vista explorer properties, and also the "takeown" dos commands, which report success that the Administrators group or my account which belongs to the administrators group, is the owner of the file, and that I have full control of it. Even so, I cannot delete this file. In DOS, I get access denied. In Explorer, I get the "you need permission to perform this action" message, with "try again" or "cancel", and it shows that my account (or administrators group, doing it that way) is the owner. It's just this one file. I was able to delete all other files and folders around this file, but just not this one.

I wonder if the folder path is so long or so nested that UAC fails to figure it out? It was in users\appdata
oamingetc. Or is the file corrupt? The file is a tempory file created by one of those biometric devices when logged on with your fingerprint, and is supposed to disappear when you log off, but it seems to have remained there because of a hard boot. Is there a utility I can use that can nuke this one lone file?
