Can't Go Into Hybrid Sleep Properly
Apr 23, 2009
I've recently put in a new motherboard on my computer. The EVGA 750i SLI FTW Edition. Now since I've put this board in I can't go into Hybrid Sleep properly. It'll power down like it used to and it'll start to power back up but it hangs on a black screen and I have to do a hard reset. I don't know if this has something to do with the new mobo or if there are some settings in vista or the bios not right but I've tried many websites' advice along with a guide on this site to fix the problem and nothing has worked.

My machine is having some problems with Vista's hybrid sleep. When it wakes up my partitioning software (True Image) fails to read the partitions on my external USB drives correctly. The last time it woke up, Windows Mail hung while booting up and had to be restarted, and my sidebar clock had stopped. Is it best to avoid hybrid sleep?

When i go to power options and select what to do when i press the sleep button, the "Hybrid sleep" is missing. I have enabled "Allow hybrid sleep" in the advanced power settings and if i type 'powercfg -a' in command prompt i am told the following sleep states are available. Standby (S3) Hibernate Hybrid Sleep
Yet when i go to power options i get -
Do nothing
Sleep
Hibernate
I have read of loads of people who can't Hibernate because of Hybrid Sleep, i appear to have the opposite. How do i enable my computer to use Hybrid Sleep please.

1) System will not awaken properly from sleep mode even with Power Options set to default. Often must re-power up yet computer resumes Windows after going to on/off switch rather than moving mouse which often results in nothing happening, other than the computer stalling, or appearing to stall.
2) Also USB devices are having drivers reinstalled from awakening, printer in particular. What are best settings? For example? Device manager> USB root hub> do I set power management to allow computer to turn off this device to save power Do I check this allow box?

I pressed the circle button with the vertical lline in Vista (from pressing Start) This sent the computer to sleep or hibanate I dont know which. I cannot get the computer to come back on. The monitor remains black (no picture) and says no signal. I have deprived the computer of power. This was achieved by unplugging it from the wall, and removing the power cable also from the computer.
I have tried restarting the computer but to no avail. I have also removed the keyboard and mouse when I try starting up. I have also tried, holding in the power button and then restarting. No matter what I try still no joy. No signal on the monitor. The lights in all cases come on, on the base unit and I can hear fans spinning etc. I have read about this issue in round about ways but all of the fixes seem to rely on actually being in windows.

I'm having some trouble setting up a network in my home. Here's the deal, I've got my laptop running VistaHomePr 64 and my Desktop running XP Pro 32. I recently got a wireless netgear router. My notebook connects wirelessly through the router while my desktop connects to the router through an ethernet cable. (The router has both wired ports and wireless transmitter)
Now, before I installed the wirless router, I had the two computers networked (and working properly) through a dynex wired router. Now I'm having trouble getting them to see each other. I'm not even sure if you can network computers while one is wireless and one is wired. I just figured it could be done since it was all going through one router.

There's a mystery drive partition on my system. confirm what it's used for/by? I'm running a triple boot of Server x64 RC2, Vista x64 SP1 RC, and Vista x86, installed on two internal hard disk drives. These are SATA drives, but not hybrids. They both have 8MB caches. (One is a Samsung HM250JI. The other is a Hitachi TravelStar 7K100.) I also have 1GB of Intel's Robson NAND. Now, in Disk Management, a 513MB (sic) FAT32 partition is there, called NVCACHE. It's listed as its own HDD, sandwiched between HDD 0 and HDD 1. So, there are two possible explanations as far as I can see: 1st candidate explanation: There's an Intel page that discusses Turbo Memory, which uses the "NVCACHE" term when describing its support for Vista ReadyDrive and "T13 specification Command Handling," which I had assumed applied just to hybrid hard drives, not to regular HDDs.
The other thing that's fishy is the 513MB cache size. Where'd the remaining 511MB go if this system has a full 1GB Robson NAND? Was I gyped out of 512MB of NAND? 2nd candidate explanation: This has something to do with the SATA caching functionality that I have enabled in the x86 partition. [See: Device Manager -> Disk Drives -> right-click on a SATA drive -> Properties -> Policies -> Enable Write Caching on the Disk -> Enable Advanced Performance.] If that's the purpose, then the question is: Do I need to confine my use of the SATA cache to one OS installation, or am I safe to enable this function in all of the OSes simultaneously? (Will overwrites by different OSes of each others' caches destabilize the system or not?)

I just acquired what seems to be a really old PCIe ATI card that I can't seem to install correctly. I went to the ATI support site and the drivers for the card just don't seem to work. Is there a specific order to follow when installing a GPU -- sorry, its been a while. It doesn't go into a PCI slot but its the bigger one, looks like a big ole' AGP card but it has a sticker right on the card that says PCIe. I can only find the drivers for a Radeon HD2600XT and I'm not sure if those are the correct drivers or not. When I first installed it everything went well and it installed correctly but the XP hardware wizard wasn't satisfied. So it doesn't fully install -- note, I do not have the original discs -- but just need the most up to date drivers.

I have had problems with Vista not sleeping before and had fixed the issue however, i installed a new video card yesterday and now my PC won't sleep again!
I press sleep it goes to sleep, then 2 seconds later it kicks back in and loads up again! The only thing i have changed since it was working was the video card (Geforce 8600GT).
I have done all the standard changes to keyboard/mouse, network adaptor, media sharing etc etc but still no joy!

I've had Vista Home Premium on a new desktop PC for about 6 weeks now. Instead of shutting down most of the time I have set it to sleep. In "Sleep" the fan does not stop running and I doubt the hard drive stops spinning, the light in the front of the computer does not flash but stays on, the keyboard light stays on and the only effect "Sleep" seems to have is make me have toreenter my password. When I do that "wakeup" there is no sound change and I don't think my PC has ever really slept. I've tried all the configurations in Power Options. I have no option to hibernate.

For the last few days or so I have been having problems with Vista Home Premuim 64bit not shutting down properly or looging off. I click on shut down and then the computer will just hang for a about 5mins and then decide to shut off sometimes or if it does not then the only way I can get it to turn off is by holding the power button in, which I dont really like doing. I have closed all programmes down by the clock on the task bar and the problem is still the same. Do you recommend trying a clean boot? I really want to try and find out where this problem lies as I don't really want to go through another reinstall of Vista.

all started after an update for MS office + gfx driver and then all the problems began, mainly my PC won't start up properly, no signal to any of my monitors, my mouse and keyboard don't work, blue and green lights on my tower running constantly and fans on full. The only way I can get it to boot up properly is to do a hard re-boot(I have to leave it unplugged for at least an hour to do this) and has been like this for almost a fortnight now, I have already tried
1). restoring it to before the update.
2). CHKDSK.
3). repair with installation disk.
4). changing power options.
5). un-installed Microsoft Office.
6).updated to most recent nvidia graphics card drivers.
Can't think of what else at the moment but have been going through the forum and google to no avail.

We recently brought a laptop with Vista Home and have had on going issues with it not shutting down. Everytime we hit shut down it goes to the logging off screen but never actually makes it. We have left it running over night and come down the next morning and its still "logging off"! We have tried the Ctrl Alt Del combination to see whats causing the issues but the task manager doesnt load up. This has been an ongoing issue for about 3 weeks and have probably only had the laptop for a month.
Forceably switching it off, which we have to, causes the safety mode prompt to come on at the next start up. If we do not run the safety mode we arent able to use the internet as it doesnt connect. So, running it in safety mode is the only way to get things back to normal. I should add that when I start up in safety mode it goes to a black screen eventually with "safety mode" written in each corner. Ive no idea how to move away from this so just hit the main off button but we can get back on the net when it reboots.
Having read a few issues with shutting down it doesnt appear that anyone has the ongoing issue we do and as mentioned Ctrl Alt Del does nothing. On the rare occasion we have got it to shut down properly it reverts the next time. We run McAfee anti virus and as a fairly new laptop there isnt much that we have downloaded since purchase. I also have a desktop and never experienced this ongoing issue!

* Use Karmic's kernel, not Jaunty's. * Check that slmodemd is not running if you're seeing a dummy/null sink in the volume control applet. * Install linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic (then reboot) if you have a very new computer. * Use a temporary alternate channel mapping for PulseAudio if you have an ice17xx-based sound card. * Configure PulseAudio to ignore your sound driver's misreported dB information if you experience "overdriven" sound. * Attach a verbose PulseAudio runtime log to your PulseAudio bug report. * Attach an ALSA codec dump to your linux bug report if jack sense (e.g., connecting headphones mutes internal laptop speakers) does not seem to function properly.

Recently I have bought a gaming PC, and after a few hours of such
gaming, my monitor goes to sleep, the PC is still running and I can
still be playing my game. just without a monitor!
The only way to get the monitor to work is to restart the PC.
Any ideas what the problem could be? At first I suspected an
overheating Graphics card, but could it be other things? could it be a
RAM problem? what could cause this? Has anyone else had this problem?
I would like to make it very clear that it is not a problem with Vista,
or its power settings, as the computer remains runnings. It is also very
unlikely to be the monitor as I bought it new yesterday.

I have 2 Dell XPS desktop PC's, both with duo 2.66 processors, 240 GB hard drives, and running Vista Home Premium. When going into Control Panel | Power Options, one of the PC's is showing all the sleep options for a battery powered laptop, and that's a LOT of options! I've attempted to set them all so that neither the PC nor any of its peripherals ever go into sleep mode, but periodically it still seems to go to sleep! I never have similar problems with the PC which Vista recognizes as being only a desktop. In order to fix this intermittent problem, first I have to let Vista know that the PC is not a laptop, but I haven't been able to find the parameter to do this.

Vista goes back to sleep after recording but wakes up to do something at 4:am. Earlier this didn't happend, so there must be some new timed task. I can not find what it is fom "scheduled tasks".

I have three PCs in my house running Vista. Before installing SP1, allof them would routinely go to sleep automatically, as per the powermanagement settings. Since installing SP1, they continue running without ever going into sleep mode. I can still enter sleep mode manually, which works fine, it's just the automatic sleep that won't work.Only software in common across all three machines (other than Vista)is Office 2007 and Windows Live OneCare. Both were installed prior to installing SP1.

I have a problem with the sleep mode. When I use my computer and when I shut it down, everything works fine, the computer turns off completely. When I use my computer and when I set it to sleep mode, everything works fine, the computer turns off , the fans aren't turning, the PC becomes silent. Pressing a key on the keyboard, or moving the mouse, will switch the computer on again, the wake up from sleep mode works OK.
The problem is when I want to shutdown after a wake up from sleep: the computer seems to go to sleep mode in a normal way, the monitor turns black, but then, the PC's case is still noisy, and the fans are still turning. In fact, it's like Windows has turned off, but not the PC. The only way I can turn it off completely is to keep the power button pressed for about 5 seconds. I'm sure the problem isn't here since the begining. I beleive this problems happens since I installed the Service Pack 1 of Vista.

I was wondering if and when Vista is put in sleep mode, does it continue to accept updates as is explained on the Microsoft website? If this is true, then will email also download from the server if the Windows Mail program is left on and maximized and the DSL modem is left on? Because the modem runs hot I usually turn it off at night, along with the computer, but I'm having problems with the server, who returns email to senders because the server only allows a small amount of bandwidth to collect in each user's webmail box.

how I can keep my laptop from automatically locking itself when ever my screen saver goes up. Basically, what I'm trying to make my computer do is simple. My brother has an HP laptop (I have a Toshiba), when he opens up his laptop or restarts it from sleep mode or what ever, it automatically loads onto the desktop. For me, it loads up the choose-a-user page, in which there is only one user, and it claims it is "locked".
I have tried a few different things so far, I went to my screen saver settings, unchecked "On resume, display logon screen", then I tried going to the netplwiz program from the start menu, disabled "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer.", hit apply, and since I don't have a password on my computer, and I hit OK. Vista even made me log off and back in to change this setting. And it is still locking the computer every time it goes into sleep or the laptop is closed.

Occasionally when I've been away from the computer for a short time and it goes into sleep mode (it`s set for 15 minutes), I can't bring up the display simply by hitting a key. I have to shut it down and restart. The boot button on the console will still be lit and I have to shut it down before I reboot. This probably happens about 30% of the time. The other 70% it comes back up with a key touch.
