XFX GTX 260 Black
Dec 31, 2008
I've been wanting a new GPU for a while now as, even with the great new drivers, I'm noticing the limitations of my current BFG 8800GTS OC 512MB card in some of the newer games I've got.
I thought I'd see what the new 55nm refresh on Nvidia cards would turn out like but early reports don't sound good at all.
Also every time I look on a retail site here in the UK I notice the prices are creeping up. This must be something to do with the crisis of capitalism, dollar/yen rate etc.
So I thought I'd buy a new card immediately and wait until the end of next year or 2010 for DX11 to come along at a reasonable price.
Sadly my price range won't run to a GTX 280 or 4870x2 ( I prefer Nvidia anyway) so I'm looking at the XFX GTX 260 Black Edition. This has got great reviews and would hopefully tide me over for a year.

is that when he tries to delete some files that he previously stored in the C:"Account Name",he gets a message saying that the file is unavailable in the specified location. However, that is not my main problem now, because when I was trying to help fix this problem I typed "msconfig" into the RUN box to get the startup utility box and I unchecked some of the background programs to prevent them from loading automatically when the system starts,in order to speed up the system;but when I restarted the system I can see the first screen, which is by the manufacturer of the labtop;then when vista starts loading, the screen becomes black and don't display anything, although I am sure that Vista is loading successfully but I cannot see it on the screen.
I am assuming that one of the programs that I have unchecked is responsible for displaying. I have tried to do a repair installation by using a bootable Vista DVD but I couldn't because I cannot see anything on the screen.I tried logging in on safe mode but that did not work either. How can I undo the changes that I have made to startup utility.

I have two users set-up, user K (with Administrator rights I believe and a password) and user N. If I login as user K, after I enter my password my computer will run for a bit (I can see/hear it logging in) but after a few minutes the screen goes black except for my white cursor and nothing else happens. If I then hit ctrl-alt-del I can see the Task Manager and switch users to user N which will start up normally and give me access to my desktop.

I have tried installing many different games on my pc, which are quite new and have been released in the last few years. The installation goes fine, and everything is great. When it comes to launching the game, well, i double click the file to run the game, and i get a black screen. Nothing happens afterwards. It just stays black. 'Ctrl + Alt + Delete' does not work, and neither does 'Alt + Tab', or any other keyboard shortcuts. This results in me having to hold in the power button and turn my pc off like that.
Any idea's on what could be wrong? It is extremely frustrating, due to the fact that i've tried running about 3 - 5 games on my computer, and neither of them work, without a black screen coming up after trying to launch any of them. I've tried numerous things like 'Running as Administrator' and changing compatibillity modes and so on and so forth, but none of that works.

I was having a weird problem with my screen going black at random after installing any version of Vista, and kept having to force a restart because there was no way to get the screen to come back on. I searched all the forums and it seemed to be very common, but as with most of the forums everyone was argueing about how to fix the problem instead of helping the people with the problem. So I'm posting this one in the hope that it may just help one or two people with the same problem.
My remedy was simply to update the BIOS to the latest version P32 I think from the XFX website, and the problem was no more, I also updated the High def audio driver from the same site, now my machine has been running flawlessly for three days now.

I was hoping that some of you guys could help me with a problem. As the title says, my screen goes completely black after the loading screen with the green loading bar, but before the usual windows vista circle is supposed to appear. I have also tried to use a vista x64 recovery disk. Here I only get the blue background a mouse I can move around on the screen, meaning I have no options to choose from. Does anyone know what the problem might be? And if so, how to possibly fix it?

I recently shutdown and restarted my laptop, and my desktop came up black, and I can't get it to change back to my regular desktop. Here's what I've done:
1-Searched and searched for an answer
2-Right clicked to Personalize/desktop background/blah blah...no change
3-Downloaded Wallpaper_enable.reg and ran as admin etc, no change
4-Oh yeah, scanned with AVG, Malwarebyte's thing...nothing shows
5-Ran autoruns to see if I could spot anything...didn't change anything
6-Ran hijackthis...still looking at it
7-Here I am
My thought is that I had removed spyware but didn't restart? ( I might have been tired)...I was so used to just hibernating my system...when I shutdown & restarted yesterday, a reg file was changed, and my desktop went to crapland. i know it's just cosmetic (I hope) but I guess I'm funny that way.

I have Vista Ulimate 64-bit and everytime that I reboot I get a black screen before the Microsoft Windows scrolling bar.
This is the sequence.
- I reboot.
- I get my bios information screen.
- I get the white, blinking line in the upper left corner of the screen.
- Then the screen goes black with no hard drive activity.
I then can perform a Complete PC restore from my second partition on the same SATA Hard Drive and I will then be able to boot into Vista with no problem.....until I reboot, then I get the Black screen again. It is a vicious cycle.
I have tried to remove video cards (2 x 8800 GTS), memory (4 GB), sound cards (X-Fi Music), load the default bios settings....nothing works. Only a Complete PC Restore cures it, but only until I need to reboot the PC.

I run Vista HP/SP2. The other day after various installs, updates and maintenance tasks I ran with no problems and ended the day by putting my laptop into hibernate mode. The next day when I powered on, my system would not come up...my system disk C: was corrupt. I finally got System Repair to run and it appeared to fix and recover my C: disk to the point that I can see my files still exist via Recovery command prompt. However when I
restart, my screen goes and stays blank (black) with my cursor usable but to no purpose. I tried System Repair again but it tells me it can find nothing to repair. I tried starting in safe mode and it loads two screens worth of windows files before going to a blank (black) screen with my cursor usable but to no purpose. The last windows file loaded is a crcdisk driver file.

I need desperately answer,no one found the solution no one. I have my Ati Radeon HD 3870X2 series connected (hdmi to hdmi) to my Samsung LE40A656F1. But when i set a game to 1920x1080 resolution there is a black frame around the screen. If i use an other resolution like 1360x768 there is no a black frame. I always use the latest drivers and hotfix for my graphic card.
Black frame i mean black (empty)frame around the screen. My graphic card is 1080p capable. My tv is 1080p capable. For now i test it with FarCry2,Sacred 2,Fallout 3,Dead Space, those games natively supports a resolution of 1920x1080p. But i still get the black frame when i set the game resolution to 1920x1080p...........

I've had an issue with my computer booting properly. I went from a 1:05 boot time to over a 2:00 boot because Vista go's to a black screen instead of loading my desktop. I'm not sure where to start fixing this, I've always been good with computers and have tried all the text book fixes and I have no where left to go. I made a video which is uploading now and will be up incase this doesn't make as much sense as I'd hope. All my drivers are up to date.

I came home from travel and my home PC was having a video issue. The only updates or changes would have been automatic windows on a subaccount. My wife powered off the system normally, and then it would only boot up to a black screen. I can hear it load Vista Home Premium up but it would only load every other time so I could see something on the monitor. Thought it might be the monitor, but connecting via a standard VGA monitor cable to my laptop, it works fine.
I attached an adapter from DVI to VGA and now that works on the home system. I Updated nVidia drivers, no change. My startup time has increased exponentially, and I cant access my USB slots as side issues. Virus scan shows nothing. I have tried waiting until I can logon to my system with the VGA cable attached, then switching to the digital cable, with no luck. Low resolution is driving me nuts. What am I missing? This system has had nothing other than small issues. Dual core cpus, nvidia 7900, 2mb ram.

Never could get my LCD screens properly cleaned. All 'special' products for cleaning leave them with stripes. Being a real man, i tried using WD40. First little corner on oldest monitor, ended up cleaning my flatscreen TV with it. It renders the screens as new, i tried putting the screen on background black and it was spotless. completely OT, bathe an old speaker overnite in WD40 makes any old scratchy speaker come back to life

For about a month now, after I've been sitting here a while, the screen goes black. For the next two or three minutes the screen will flash on for a millisecond, and gradually the frequency will lengthen, and then up to 12 minutes later back to normal. (HP Pavillion bought Nov 07, Vista Home Premium, AgNeovo F=17.)
Last week I thought it might need a new screen driver, so I got one, and for two days no flashes. My other big problem is everything seems to be on a hair-trigger. I'll want to click on whatever, and a box of choices or warning pops up, and I have to hit Escape to get rid of it...........

There are many problems regarding black screen on boot. I've researched and surfed for over 4 hours, that is not an exaggeration, but found no use. When the vista passes log-on screen then it is time ti display desktop on boot, there simply shows a black screen with mouse cursor at the center.
Task manager works, and it seems nothing is using huge system resource at that time. After few amount of time, the desktop finally appears. I never installed driver, but in case one of them got corrupted, I installed the same version again to try to resolve the problem. It was no use. It's a OEM version that came with my laptop and this laptop has no pirated software. Not a single one

I have the problem both on my HP home computer and my office Dell computer. Both are Vista 32-bit. Both are up-to-date with patches. It happens two ways which are a little different. I prefer to use the screen lock instead of logging out and logging back in. This holds for cases when I expect to be away from the computer for hours or minutes. Typically I use CTRL-ALT-DEL and expect a list to come up from which I would choose to lock the screen. However, the screen goes black. Sometimes if I move the cursor (which is visible) over a button or other sensitive area of the display, the button will appear and may be used. Sometimes nothing appears. I tried instead going to the start...lock menu item and the behavior is the same.
Normally waiting will cause the screen to become normal again. That is, I go away from the computer and come back later and find that everything is normal. I believe that some process is "spinning its wheels" and not finishing what was started. I have no measurement of the time it takes to get back to normal. It seems to take only minutes. If I restart the machine or merely log out and back on, the behavior disappears for awhile until it comes back. I have been able to clear some other slowness issues by merely logging out and on. The implication of that is that the slowness problem is due to something in my own session and not a system process. Perhaps it is the same problem causing the screen lock issue.

I can't tell you how many forums I've read to try and find an answer. My computer just will not start, the fans run, seems like it's starting to boot up, I get one POST beep then nothing. No BIOS, no activity on the screen at all, no flickering lights, no beeps, no anything. I am thinking this is a video card issue, I thought I read something that was similar to this. I remember reading about a chip for the on-board video that can me removed and re-installed that re-sets the on board video. Anyone heard of this?
Sure there are a lot of "Black Screen" type issues, but not like this. I noticed, prior to this problem happening about 2 weeks ago, there were a couple Microsoft updates within a few days. After DLing them, the computer seem to load slower and slower with each restart. Then the (true) Black Screen of Death arrived. Since then I have been at a complete loss. Tried all new Power Supply, new RAM, new Hard Drive....same issue. I reset the CLRTC jumper, took the battery out for hours, nothing seems to work.
