Our family has 3 laptops running Vista - 1 basic and 2 home premium. One of the home premiums will not stay sleeping. Sometimes I have to make it sleep twice or even 3 times before it will appear to stay sleeping. But the next morning it is no longer sleeping. I have to unplug the Ethernet cable to be assured that it is not doing anything on the web. How can I correct this problem?

View 9 Replies View Relatedi recently had to take my dell dimension c521 back to factory set, using repair my computer on the f8 key advanced boot options (basic installed). everything loaded well and running basic no probs!!however i have an upgrade disk for home premium when i install it, it has disabled option to keep original settings and files and performs to install home premium and moves my old settings to (windows old folder). when i first got disk it just upgraded to home premium with settings and files no problem.have i done something wrong at factory set or is there a way to upgrade keeping my settings.

View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen I upgraded to Vista Premium from Basic I lost sound. Seems to be a common problem. I got the message "no audio output device is installed" I tried updating drivers to no avail.The following worked for me just now.
Go to Device manager
open Sound, video and game controllers
double click the driver
click "update driver"
click "search my computer"
choose "high definition audio device" - NOT the driver
CANNOT SIMPLY UPGRADE WITHIN VISTA??? FIRST TIME ISSUE EVER POSTED! I have a question that I cannot make sense of. I have Windows Vista Home Basic with SP1 installed on my computer. I have a copy of a legit retail version of Windows Vista Ultimate Upgrade SP1 DVD-ROM. I want to upgrade my current Vista Home Basic to Vista Ultimate. Sounds simple enough. I have read everywhere on the web and it can upgrade easily as long as you upgrade within Windows Vista and not a reboot installation. Okay, but when I get to a point in the Vista grade process, I CANNOT! During the installation process, when I get to the screen that states, "Which type of installation do you want?" AFTER INPUTTING THE VISTA ULTIMATE KEY CODE ON A PREVIOUS SCREEN, the option should be "Upgrade" ONLY and NOT "Custom (Advanced)" since the key code is set for upgrade option only. I GET THE TOTAL OPPOSITE!!! I only get the option "Custom (Advanced)" and the "Upgrade" option is grayed out. WHAT??? NO "Upgrade" option??? I SHOULD BE GETTING THE "Upgrade" OPTION!!! This does not make any sense!!! It states at the reason at the bottom of this screen, "Upgrade has been disabled. - The upgrade option cannot be started, to upgrade, cancel the installation and then choose to upgrade to a version of Windows that is more recent than the version you are currently running." This does not make any sense, does it??? I should be able to only upgrade since I only have an upgrade disc. I am upgrading from a lower edition of Vista to a higher edition of Vista, therefore I should ALSO have this feature to upgrade enabled too when it knows my CD key is a higher ("upgrade") edition. I have spent several hours searching and read around the web and cannot find my same or similar case scenario. A first time! People who have upgraded between different editions of Vista with either the Windows Anytime Upgrade retail package or (mine) the Windows Vista Ultimate Retail Upgrade box (includes the Windows Anytime Upgrade anyways on it) say it is a breeze! What is going on with me??? I should not be having any problems what-so-ever!

the exercise work after each class lesson). This system uses Windows Vista Basic as operating system and is based on a 802.11a/b/g Wireless LAN.
1.It is possible to create a Vista Install DVD allowing ??? in case of serious problems with the hardware on one PC ??? to format the hard disk and reload the Operating System, Configuration, Programs and LAN configuration (not exceeding 2 or 3 GB of disk space for the image) just by loading the Install DVD, without the need for calling any expert to solve the situation. I have to explain that recently a similar situation occurred and it took three hours of an expert???s time to reload the whole configuration and programs on the PC concerned.
2.If the answer to the above point is yes, what are the simple steps to follow to achieve what described at above point 1.
A friend found out that I have a Vista computer so he brought me his wife's computer to find out why it is so slow. I have no problems with mine but this Vista Home Basic PC is ungodly slow. Just to open an Explorer window takes over 90 seconds. I scheduled a checkdisk and ran it on the next reboot. I defragged and ran the disk cleanup wizard. I downloaded and reinstalled the ATI video drivers after seeing an eror message about ATI. It is slightly faster but not enough to make any difference to the user. Where do I find the diagnostics, or logs or something that can tell me what is slowing it down so that I can fix it? I couldn't find a diagnostic on the eMachine site. My last option will be to reformat and start over but I'd rather not do that if there is a way to fix it instead. It's an eMachine with only 512 MB RAM, but it did run much faster when new. Intel Pentium 3.0 GHz, 160 GB HDD. Also the wireless card is very slow, but the wired connection is pretty fast for downloading.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI upgraded from Vista Home Premium to Ultimate using our Microsoft Actiona Pack License that says you must have a previous version to use it. It required that I do a FULL install instead of an Upgrade. Seemed to go perfectly, everything works, etc. Problem is that now I have both Vista Home Premium and Vista Ultimate on my C: Drive and almost no space left. How do I rid myself of Vista Home Premium on this computer now? It's taking up around 52 Gig of space.

If I had known this prior to recently purchasing this system and upgrade--I probably would not have. While working in Vista Home Premium I experienced a recent system failure and I do not know if it was caused by a virus. I had the AVG Free Edition installed and it was up to date. I decided to perform a clean reinstall using the Vista DVD Installer, but at a certain point a message appears onscreen informing that Vista can not be installed, and that some required files may be missing or corrupt. It also points that there might be a hard disk failure. However, I was able to perform a clean reinstall for openSuse to keep working with my PC. Before the Vista system failure, the double booting process had been working well for more than a year.

I click download and the bar fills up with blue and it says saving to desktop, but when I click to the desktop, nothing has downloaded. I have tried using 'run' instead of save and the blue bar fills up and it says saving to temporary folder, but then nothing. I can't open e-mail attachements that need downloading or download any thing from the net at all.I have tried several system restores to various different dates and got something to save to the desktop once, but now anything I try and download doesn't download.I have tried running the computer in safe mode with networking but the problem still occurs. I have also tried resetting internet explorer, but again that does nothing. i have tried sfc /scannow , but it came up with no violations or errors. PLEASE do not ask me to download another OS, as I can't download anything!!!!

I've got a laptop and I'm trying to install Vista Home Premium on it (I have no idea whether or not it's x64 or anything like that). I put in my product key and it works fine, but when it asks where I want it installed, it says "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style." No matter what I do, I cannot get it to work. I keep getting that same message. I don't know what to do.
View 6 Replies View Related32-bit Vista Home Premium. Have Windows Live OneCare installed, but am getting a msg that the service is disabled. I cannot get into services either through the start search box or through the control panel. If I use the box, the service never displays and I can no longer use the start menu unless I go to task manager and log off and then log back on. If I use the control panel, it just sits there with the revolving blue circle. If I open task manager and click on the services tab there is a service listed called OcHealthMon which is described as Window Live One Care Health Monitor and it says the status is stopped. If I right click and select start service I get the msg 'The operation could not be completed. Access is denied"
If I boot in safe mode I can go into services, but it says that OneCare has an Automatic startup type and is already started. I have MalwareBytes installed on the PC and it finds no malicious items in safe mode, but in normal startup the desktop icon has a litle security center emblem in the lower right hand corner. I cannot open the security center from the control panel - blue wheel again.
I have XP Pro on my desktop PC & I know that I can stop & disable services. I also know that some services depend on other services to run. So, I have some questions about Home Premium versus Ultimate. First question is: Will Home Premium allow one to stop & disable any services - any services at all?
I want to build a PC & I think that I'd be perfectly happy with Home Premium. But, I might want to try Virtual PC & I know that I need Ultimate for that. I assume that Ultimate is like XP Pro & will allow me to stop & disable services. Am I correct?
For example, I will be the only person using the PC so I don't need Group Policy. Can that service be stopped & disabled? My PC will never be joined to a domain. Can that service be stopped & disabled? I might use the file encryption service. So, in other words, I'd like to make Ultimate more like Home Premium. Can I do that by turning off certain Ultimate features? What are Ultimate Extras?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI just bought a DV4t laptop from HP. Due to the hard drive heating up problems with this particular laptop, I went out and bought a 60GB SSD which runs a lot cooler. Is there a way to move the Vista x64 Home Premium to the new SSD drive? I thought about reinstalling the OS from scratch, but the HP system does not come with a Windows disk, just a recover disk that will fill up most of the SSD space with bloatware.

View 5 Replies View RelatedMy new laptop came with Vista Home Premium, and the hard drive had been partitioned into two equal partitions. On Friday I was offered Vista SP2 from the update centre. To my cost I agreed to install it. The first thing it did was create a restore point. The installation then failed part way through as "some features could not be updated". I was then told that it would be rolled back to the most recent restore point. I clicked on proceed and went away to let it do its stuff. Some time later I returned to find the same error message, and clicked on proceed a second time. This appeared to work, except that when I logged in, it had restored the PC to its initial state, not the most recent (or for that matter any) restore point, and all traces of the software I had installed since then - and my wireless connection - had vanised. It took me hours to set everthing up again. A quick Google came up with this: Is this correct? If so it's going to be a rather common situation. And I reiterate that this offered by Microsoft Update. I didn't go out there actively looking for it. And what's the point of restore points if they don't work?

While in Home Premium, I insert and run the VISTA Ultimate CD Select upgrade I have it connected to internet so it can retrieve updates. It goes though the process of upgrading but ends with a message similar to Windows could not configure one or more system components. It then reverts back to Home Premium. I have tried performing the upgrade both before and after installing updates to Home Premium- no difference..........
My new computer came loaded with Vista Home Premium, a Windows version that I find very fast, secure as an Army base or the FBI, and extremely complicated... for me, at least. I am just a writer who needs a PC to just write, edit,file, print, mail, and listen to live music and the news. I can't set up Internet radio stations on this advanced Media Center because the words WINAMP and "live music" do not even show up after I click on RADIO in the MUSIC menu. There seem to be no files for WINAMP or live music anywhere in my computer; however, since WINAMP should be accessible and installable in this Vista version, I think I just do not know how to
locate it.

I check yahoo for my home page and my search engine, check "don't ask me again" and save. However when I start firefox again, it goes to the firefox welcome page and the same box pops up again. Anybody know what's going on? This is a recent phenomenon, and happens no matter which search engine or home page I select.
