Taskbar And Desktop Icons Have Disapeared
Mar 23, 2008A friend of mine switched on his computer and all his desktop icons and his taskbar has dissapeared, any answers on hot to fix this problems?

Taskbar Works, Desktop+Desktop Icons Are Gone
Aug 11, 2009I have rebooted my Laptop normally, I logged into Windows Vista and i was surprised by having the Desktop background disappeared along with it's Icons. The programs work fine... I tried choosing a picture and setting it to a desktop background. Still nothing. I terminated explorer.exe, The desktop background appeared. but since i terminated it, the taskbar and icons are gone. I Can't right click on the desktop, and when i move the cursor inside it, it's still "loading" for ever.

have done a system restore but that didn't cure it. other user accounts are not affected

May 26, 2009all my desktop icons got suddenly changed to internet explorer icons,after (i opened some program in the internet,) then i did some personalisation then it changed to my adobe photoshop icon, all the desktop icons now shows the adobe,,icons.like all my programs which was earlier like (yahoo msngr, msn mesengr,windows vista programs,almost all other programs) and my internet wireless stopped working. i have a vista home premium 32. and my comp is asus f3t series. i was trying to do the icon cache, but couldnt find. tried restarting but couldnt solve.now trying to run my antivirus scan Mcafee. if anybody knows the solution to restore my earlier icons.

Jun 15, 2008I have the same problems as a lot of people, also with my network and sound my internet security icon also disapeares. Ive tried the fix in the registry but it just happens again later. I can reboot and everything is back but after awhile they just disapear again. I know is has something to do with SP1 because i didnt have this problem untill installing it. Oct 16, 2009After reinstalling Vista, I noticed that the taskbar icons were no longer displayed as large icons. I believe there used to be an option available to display large icons. I haven't been able to figure out how to make the icons and buttons on the taskbar larger.
FYI, I am running Vista Home Premium, Service Pack 2, with all Microsoft updates applied.
Permanently Hiding Icons In Taskbar
Feb 12, 2009I have installed some programs on the computer of my kids and I dont want them to fiddle with their icons which are found near the time they are closing the programs all the time. I dont even want to hide the icons, I want them gone from the taskbar without effecting the operation of the program. I know XP allows icons to be always hidden but then you can reveal them by clicking on the small arrow buttons i dont want that, just want them gone.

Feb 4, 2010I normally set up my taskbar two rows in heighth with the quick launch icons on the far left. This leaves the middle section for the "open tabs". I recently did a clean reinstall (restored an image) and somewhere in that process or the ensuing windows updates, the taskbar layout got all screwed up and I am unable to make it right. This is what is there now (with the task bar unlocked so the "dotted section divider lines" are visible: On the far left next to the Start button is the first set of divider lines.
(Normally, the quick launch icons are to the left of this line). To the right of the divider lines are the "tabs" for open windows. Then to the right of these are the second set of divider lines, followed by the quick launch icons, followed by the third set of divider lines. To the right of the third set is an address tool bar I installed and then the notification area. I have searched through the microsoft site and found nothing that helps me with this. This anomoly has happened before (sometime ago with XP) and somehow I fixed it by "fiddling around". My curse in life is that I am not able to live with these little annoyances.
My Desktop&taskbar Is Gone!
Mar 28, 2008I have vista home premium, all was going well until yesterdayThe PC will boot up normally, I can see everything icons, taskbar all boot up. Once it is all up and ready they dissapear! I can't even right click on desktop nothing happens! The only thing left on desktop is the gaget bar.The only way to get online to internet is by going through the "get more gagets online" part of the gaget bar.

Mar 24, 2009So I just traded out my year old Gateway laptop (which stopped working) for a new Dell Inspiron. I've never been particularly impressed with Dell but the Tech Guy at Best Buy assured me the quality of their laptops had improved. Anyway, it came with Windows Vista Home Premium. Since it was a Dell it came loaded with a stardock with mac-like icons instead of desktop icons. I like it so I customized it with the icons for the programs I use most, stared typing up notes for medical school with MS Word, and started downloading music files.
So the other day I notice strangely that the dock had reverted back to the original icons that were present when I first got the computer. Then I noticed all of the files downloaded/saved to the harddrive had disappeared. So I start anew adding files and replacing most of the old ones. Then suddenly yesterday the dock changes again back to how it was...customized and the files that I originally had reappeared but now the files I saved when it changed the first time are gone. So what is going on? Is this some kind of glitch in the OS? Is there something wrong with the actual computer? how get my files back?

May 15, 2010I just cleared my desktop because it was absolutely cluttered with icons and stuff, but now it's like the Icons are part of the wallpaper, because I can't click on them, can't drag them, and if I drag a different icon over it it's still there underneath the other one.

May 6, 2009Yesterday my computer was working perfectly, however when i started my computer up today the screen was completely black and all i had was a mouse, luckily i was able to start task manager and then run programs. I assumed this was a one time vista glitch but just in case, i ran an anti-virus that came out negative. I expected things to be resolved if i restarted my computer, but when i restarted it the same thing, so i restarted one more time, and to my discontent, this time there was not even a mouse, so now i have to write this from vista safe mode in order to access my computer. May 31, 2008So basically, a few weeks after i got Vista i tried to install Stellarium (freeware astronomy program), which crashed my computer. I restarted, and after typing in my password I get "My Documents" open on a black screen, nothing else, no taskbar or desktop icons or anything. When i try to open the "taskbar and start menu" icon in Control Panel, nothing happens. Also, when I Ctrl-Alt-Del the usual screen comes up, but the task manager is no longer an option, and i can't think of how to access it or my taskbar. I've installed all the servfice packs and they haven't helped.

Mar 21, 2009I have just bought a new laptop as i fried the MoBo in my last one which i bought in the early days of Vista, not realising what system requirements were for Vista i landed up with a very under resourced in the hardware dept. laptop and i am shure my constant tinkering with the hardware caused the death of it.
Which brings me to my query (now that i am overly paranoid about tinkering with hardware) i have been researching and have found there is very mixed opinion on applying Bios updates and was wondering what people here thoughts. I have two pending Bios updates 1st addresses better support for SP2 and the 2nd improves system performance & LCD panel brightness
Desktop + Icons Disappeared?
Mar 8, 2009I'm Sorry I have no Idea where should I post this thread but this seemed like the best place... Lately, I was messing with my TaskManager, And In the Processes Tab, I saw the Dwm.exe (desktop window manager), I Ended it's process and all of a sudden, Everything was gone from my desktop... I Opened it again through the C:/Windows/System32 folder... it worked in the taskmanager, But still, Nothing showed up on my desktop. Everything is working fine, My Taskbar, Programs, and even I can locate my desktop icons through the windows explorer / search bar... But The Problem still exists... I have No Desktop Wallpaper... I have no Icons on my Desktop... My Desktop is just... Black...

Mar 14, 2009All of a sudden I have got duplicate desktop icons. It seems that the top layer is working as a shortcut but when I click & drag it there is another icon underneath which does not work. If I try to delete them only the top icon disappears the bottom one will not be moved or deleted. I have tried to use Unlocker, done disc clean up, defrag, disc check, run McAfee, superantispyware and no baddies found. I've posted a screen capture of just one icon but all the icons are affected.

May 10, 2009I followed a tip stating that you could remove the labels from icons on your Desktop by turning on the NumLock, holding down Alt and typing 0160 on the numbers keypad. I did this for several shortcuts and it worked fine. I also did it on two files, which also worked. Now I want to delete the 2 files and can't. I also can't rename them. I have moved the documents that were in them to new files, so the ones I can't delete are empty now.
How do I either rename the files or delete them? My goal is to get rid of the two files.

Off Screen Icons On The Desktop
Nov 22, 2008Haven't been able to figure this one out, so thought the experts can have a crack at it. I have Vista Home Basic 32bit on a Dell DimC521. There have been several occasions when I paste a file onto my desktop only to notice that it doesn't show up. If I try to repaste it again, Vista asks me if I want to replace the existing file (meaning the original paste is already there, just hidden somewhere). If I use the Rearrange option to align the icons, the mystery icon then shows up. Thus, I'm 99% sure that the icon is off screen somewhere.
I have a similar problem with Napster's Mini Player feature (legal copy with paid subscription). The Mini Player is checked as "Always Display" but it's nowhere to be found on the desktop. It can't be minimized to the taskbar either so I can't do that Move or Rearrange option. I have only 1 monitor (not dual) and I don't play any full-screen games that would alter the display settings so I'm puzzled (1) where these items are hiding and (2) how to bring them back so I can use them, and (3) how to prevent this problem in the future.
Desktop Icons Have Black Box
Mar 23, 2008For some reason, the majority of my desktop icons have black boxes covering them. The recycle Bin, a folder I created, and a text document seem to be immune to the black box, but for my other icons, I can't seem to get rid of them. what I can do to get rid of the black boxes?
