Symantec Antivirus Does'nt Work

Oct 17, 2009

Keeps saying I don't have Admin rights when this is the first freaking account made on it (also an admin account) and I also edited the relevant registry key about asking for admin rights and set it to zero to fix this problem.

Symantec Antivirus CD:Do Need Just The .EXE Installation File?

May 15, 2010

I have a Symantec Antivirus CD. However, the computer I want to install the antivirus on has a non-working disc drive, so the CD is useless for it, and I was going to put the disc in another computer disc drive, then transfer its contents to a USB flash drive, then use the USB on the computer I want to have the antivirus program. However, it's disc drive nor its USB ports work.

So what I thought was, using the disc on another computer, and attaching the disc contents in an email, or on megaupload. However, I can't attach folders. I have to attach files, not folders, like a .exe file for instance. So I was only able to send to myself, online, the .exe installation file of the Symantec Antivirus program I want to install on the computer. Is the .exe installation file all I need for the program?

Antivirus Program: Internet Explorer Refuses To Work

Aug 20, 2008

So I accidentally downloaded an antivirus program that is really a virus. It really sucks. Internet explorer refuses to work. Task manager has been disabled by the administrator. Any program that operates under windows explorer fails to run properly. This makes it very difficult to use the computer. What exactly is wrong? Do I need to repair the registry? What if I did not make a backup?

Vista In Gaming Machine Not Work

Feb 8, 2008

I have been trying to install Vista for days now on my new gaming machine but it just won't work. I have a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R Rev 2.1 mobo, Gigabyte 8800GT graphics card, 2 Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB drives in RAID 0 and 4GB of TEAM Xtreem Dark PC2-6400 CL4 ram. I have been into the BIOS and enabled RAID and setup a RAID array in RAID BIOS. I have also downloaded the correct RAID driver from the Gigabyte website and I load it when windows prompts me. Here is what's happening.

Everything good during windows install until it gets to completing installation part. Computer restarts as it says and then continues to install windows. Screen goes black and I lose power to mouse, keyboard and all usb ports. If it is my RAID array being incorrectly setup what would it be that I have done wrong? The BIOS seems very simple so I don't quite know how I would have made a mistake. The only thing I can think of is the stripe size part which I left at 128KB.

I have 4GB of ram in 4x1GB sticks which came in pairs. I put one pair in one colour slot and the other pair in the other colour slot. Could this be an issue? I haven't done anything with the ram in the BIOS. In the BIOS do I need SATA AHCI Mode enabled? It's currently disabled. I put my drives in the yellow SATAII0 and SATAII1 ports and my cd drive in the SATAII2 port. Is this correct?

Windows 98 Backup Work On Vista Machine?

May 11, 2008

I have 4 PC's running Win XP and use Windows 98 Backup to transfer files and keep things in sync. One of the computers is at a remote location during the summer so I can't use a network to transfer files. All computers have identical file structures and I've found that using Win 98 backup works great since it allows data compression and I simply have to make a backup, transfer the .qic file to a CD and then do a restore. The XP backup software does not allow data compression unless you are backing up to a tape drive.

To get Win 98 backup to work on XP I carefully transfer the appropriate files that are used by Win 98 backup to the c:windowssystem32 directory and, most importantly, I set program compatibility for Windows 98. I am faced with replacing my old laptop with a new one and it seems that it will be difficult to buy one with Win XP. So my question is: Is it possible that Windows 98 backup will work on a Vista machine? Does Vista have program compatibility mode that can be set like XP has?

Sharing Printer Attched To X64 Machine With X86 XP Machine

Apr 4, 2010

When I browse for a printer on the network I can see the workgroup, I can see the PC with the printer, but I don't see the printer show up under the PC in the Add Printer Wizard dialog. This was easy for me back when there were two machines running XP.

I have installed the x86 printer driver on the Vista machine. Would this be easier if I upgraded the Vista machine to Windows 7?

XP Machine Drops Network Connection To Machine

Feb 6, 2009

Computer 1 is my home desktop running Vista Premium SP1. It is on the 'workgroup' workgroup. Computer 2 is my work laptop (on docking station) running XP Pro SP2. It is on a domain called 'amer'. There is an HP LaserJet 2100 connected to the Vista machine. It is shared. This is a wired network with D-Link router. At first I thought it was a sharing issue when I could not print from the XP machine to the printer on the Vista machine. But then I realized it is a network issue because if I try to browse the Vista machine from the XP machine I get the 'no access, you may not have permission', etc. message. To make it work, I :

1. start the XP machine (assuming the Vista machine is already running)
2. wait about 15 minutes for the Vista machine to see that the XP machine is there.
3. Browse to and open the XP machine from the Vista machine
4. Go to the XP machine, open its workgroup (amer) and then open the XP machine
5. Wait a minute or so, then while still on the XP machine, navigate to
Vista machine's workgroup ('workgroup') and open the workgroup. If the Vista machine appears I am good to go. I don't need to browse it, it just needs to appear.........................

Installing Symantec Anti-Virus

Mar 7, 2010

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium (SP2) (32-bit) on a Toshiba Satellite A215. I'm trying to install Symantec Endpoint Protection (32-bit) that I downloaded from the ACERT website for home use. (Unmanaged, typical install). For some reason, it gets to: Removing System Registry Values in the install process, then says, "Rolling back action," and cancels the install. It says, "The wizard was interrupted before Symantec Endpoint Protection could be completely installed. Your system has not been modified. To complete
installation at another time, please run setup again." I have restarted and tried again, same thing.

I have Symantec Corp AV 10.2. It should work fine for Vista x64, and it does for some time, but then Auto protect gets disabled and I can't turn it back on unless I restart. Then it works for some time again and again turns off. If I try to re-enable it, I get the UAC prompt, then tray icon changes to enabled for a second and switches back to disabled. System log has absolutely nothing about autoprotect shutting down, but does have other messages from the AV. I don't know where else to look.

Symantec Dropped Winfax, Without Finding Anything Appealing

Feb 21, 2009

What software do folks with Vista use? I had half dozen fax programs, but none seems to work with Vista Home Premium. I just bought a Zoom modem w/fax, but the only software that came with it was trialware that costs $45 after 30 days. I know Symantec dropped Winfax, and I looked at Tiger Direct and Newegg without finding anything appealing. I searched download.com and came up with a couple of programs I'd never heard of that hadn't been downloaded much. I'd love a good simple freeware program, but if there's a good retail package that most folks are using,

Network My Vista Machine With My XP Machine

Jun 24, 2008

Its been about three months since I've given up trying to network my Vista machine with my XP machine, but I thought I would try it again. here are my symptoms again:

*Vista (Ultimate) machine cannot see XP (Home SP2) machine.
*XP machine can see and access the Vista machine.
*Xp machine shows up in the Vista Network Map, but not the Network Folder.
*Both machines can ping each other.
*I can access the XP machine via IP address, I can access the shared folder but not a shared printer.
*IPConfig for Vista shows that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is disabled even though it is enabled in the Network Adaptor Properties dialog. (NetBIOS over TCP/IP always enabled, the middle radio button)

Other information:
*Everything worked as it should once apon a time, then it all went to Hell. It could have been an update, tweaking software, or antivirus setting, but I notcie too late to do anything about it.
*I know it can't be that I don't have the same User/Password on both machines (I tried it anyway but it still didn't work), because it worked awhile back without having the same accounts on both machines.
*I had Bitdefender 2008 on the Vista machine, the Firewall log had entries that the ports 138 and 139 were being refused, despite having the XP machine being on the trusted list (by its IP address). So I uninstalled the Antivirus, but the problem persists.
*The XP machine has Zone Alarm Internet Security.................

Norton Ghost And X64: The Symantec Page Wont Even Load

Apr 8, 2008

I have Vista x64 with 8GB DDR 2 ram, 2x8800GTX cards, 4 hard drives (2x500gb, 1x150gb and 1 raptor 32gb OS). I back up daily, and yesterday encountered a problem requiring a restore. Since System Restore is useless as it didnt save my "create a restore point" I decided to go ahead with my daily Ghost backup (v12.0 used). Hell broke loose. Ghost's always worked fine under XP but Im writing this article for any suggestions on X64 (if its even the problem). You see, when booting from the Ghost CD, what usually happens are one of 2 things:

1) The Symantec page wont even load, the PC will give a BSOD error message until I remove all but 2GB RAM, then Symantec loads etc

2) When RAM removed, Symantec loads, finds the restore point, restores the drive. Then with around 20 seconds to go I get a BSOD (same one as before). Try booting the PC and for a split second you get the BSOD and it restarts.

If you try loading the CD again, you get the BSOD. The only way to get around the BSOD (and to start the whole process again) is to PHYSICALLY remove the hard drive you reinstalled on, format it with a different computer, plug it back in and start over. This was mental! I restored onto a (newly purchased) Raptor drive. No idea what the problem is. Does anyone recommend any new software to backup a whole PC (quickly) and possibly retore itself within Windows, or ways around the problems above?

Antivirus 360

Jan 27, 2009

Antivirus 360 is a rogue anti-spyware program that uses false scan results and aggressive advertising in order to promote itself. This rogue is advertised by the Vundo Trojan and is replacing the Antivirus 2009 rogue program that Vundo has been aggressively advertising. If you are infected with the Vundo Trojan you will see a large amount of pop-ups stating that your computer is infected and that you should install Antivirus 360 in order to protect yourself. If you click on the ad, Antivirus 360 will be downloaded to your computer and you will be prompted to install it.

Once installed, Antivirus 360 will be configured to start automatically when you start Windows. Once started, the program will perform a scan, and when done, will list a variety of legitimate or nonexistent files as infections that cannot be removed unless you first purchase the program. What is so dangerous about these scan results is that the files that Antivirus 360 states are infections are actually legitimate Microsoft files, that if deleted, will cause Windows to become unusable. Therefore, if someone believes the results from this program they may manually delete the files thinking they are infections and cause their computer to no longer function. Some files that it states are infections are:C:WindowsSystem32svchost.exe

C:WindowsSystem32alg.exe
While running you will also see a constant barrage of false security alerts stating that your computer has a variety of security risks. These risks range from files being modified to private data being sent to a remote host. These alerts, though, are false and are only being shown to further scare you into thinking your infected, when in fact the Antivirus 360 program is the actual infection. Unfortunately, these alerts coupled with the Vundo Trojan will affect your computer's performance and you will notice that it begins to operate slower.
