Search Engines, Systems Change Things

Jun 9, 2009

I had Google as my Search Engine. Reset my computer and wound up with someting called "Bing" by MSN. How can I get rid of it and back to where I was? Hate it when these systems change things. What I DON"T know about computers would fill a swimming pool.

Microsoft Brand In Sharp Decline, Change The Course Of Things

Mar 28, 2008

Of course I predicted all this the very moment I set my eyes on an early beta of Vista. I knew this was very bad news for MS. If vista was good, then it would have saved MS, but vista has been Microsoft's worst product EVER (and Im not joking when I say that). Companies don't go near it, any respected IT person would never tell a business to install Vista...Vista has been hated and kicked around all over the internet... the blogosphere and videoshpere is full of vista jokes and bashes... And now MS is without inspiration, windows7 seems too much like vista... and that's a big problem. They need some new brilliant minds and to open their ears to what people really need, but is the time enough to change the course of things?......

The Recommended Updates Was KB940157: Windows Search 4.0 For Windows Vista For X64-systems (11,8MB).

Aug 19, 2008

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit edition Dutch Version, updated with SP1 and all the patches/updates until today. However, I have encountered two problems lately, that might be related. During one of the last Windows update sessions, one of the recommended updates was KB940157: Windows Search 4.0 for Windows Vista for x64-systems (11,8MB).

The update downloaded succesfully, created a restore point, but then during installation of Search 4.0, windows update stops and announces an update fail error:

Failed: 1 update
Errorcode: 800F0900

I've been googling this particular error code in combination with KB940157, but it doesn't bring up any entries. Then later on, I discovered that when I go into the Windows Components window (via Control Panel, Add/remove software), the entire windows stays blank (first it says "Wait a few moments..."). This only lasts a few seconds then shows a complete empty window.

Search Failing With Special/technical Searches Rather Than Simple Filename Search, 85% Of This OS Is Now Great

Jun 22, 2009

except for a few grand issues like Search failing with special/technical searches rather than simple filename search, 85% of this OS is now great. I love it now. And can you guess how many processes show up in TaskManager? 26. ONLY TWENTY SIX. My IE8 starts up lightning fast and swings by all sites except videos, for certain sites w/FlashPlayer & Videos I enable CompatibilityView which aligns those older sites to IE8.

Applications startup as if they were already loaded into Memory, faster than in WinXP. Who knew? It feels like quad-core at 4GHz, seriously. Everything is momentary as if it were loaded from RAM This OS is still a failure, however, versus WinXP. Are you shocked to hear "failure" after my praises, do I contradict myself? No. Because most people are far from my tenacity and just by education, hobbies and profession I alway stune up things to perfection. My cheap car leaves far more expensive models wondering what rocket had just passed them on LIE Expressway. I enjoy tinkering with technology.

It took me 2 weeks (?) to tune up Vista beast to be a polished fast, bug-free beast. It's more convoluted than was tuning WindowsXP. I spent several days in Registry, GroupPolicies, SecPolicies, filesystem digging out and blatantly renaming & moving system files no one is supposed to touch.........

Windows Ultimate X64 Search Engine - Search Fails To Index

Jun 18, 2009

I've got an apparently "broken" search installation. So that I can skip through the normal "click the folder you want to index" type of answers, it's way beyond that. Let me give some background first. This is a new installation of Vista x64 Ultimate on this machine. I just installed it a little over a week ago after I got a blue screen of death that wouldn't allow any type of system restore, etc on the prior install. My prior installation on that machine was a Vista Ultimate x32 bit. The prior installation had the OS on the C: drive and I had moved "My Documents" out of a Windows XP onto the D: drive (D:My DOcuments).

In that prior installation, I left all Music, Videos, documents etc. under the original layout and just pointed the Vista "music", "documents", etc folders to the sub folders. I had no problem indexing on my prior version. I have a Vista 64 bit Ultimate at work as well and IT has no problem indexing even under the default locations..........

SP2 Fixes A Few Things

Jun 6, 2009

Well I must admit, SP1 was a huge disappointment but SP2 was what the doctor ordered for my PC.

My 5+ year old XP system was 20 times faster at disk to disk copy and network to disk copy than was my Vista. Solaris and Linux were 30 times faster. Applied SP1, no change. Vista was still pig slow at moving big files.

But SP2 changed that, now have the same performance as XP, maybe even faster on disk to disk. M$ fixed something in this load. Don't know what, took them a long time but much welcomed fix!

Q6600, 8GB RAM, 500GB HD x 2, Vista Premium 64 bit.

Can't Download Things Off Of The Internet

Dec 28, 2009

So I am using Windows Vista 64 bit home premium on my laptop. Starting today I tried to install a program which I had downloaded earlier for a game and it says that it is not a valid win32 program. I've been working on solutions that I have found on the internet and none seem to work. It does not seem to be limited to one thing as everything I download says that it is not a valid win32 program even .exe installers that I had used only days before. Now I can't even download things off of the internet. Anything I download just disappears from where the program has been saved too.

18 Cool Things Windows 7 Do'nt Do

Aug 30, 2009

From Windows 3.1 to Windows Vista, the Windows operating system has taken many giant leaps. And while Vista received a lukewarm reception from some users, Windows 7 is likely to be remembered for addressing those criticisms. In fact, there aren't many changes to the overall look of Windows 7 when compared to Windows Vista. Instead, Microsoft seems to have paid attention to the feedback it received and created an OS that is not only stable, but also very capable. So what is new in Windows 7? Here are 18 cool things Windows 7 does that Vista doesn't.

Printer Should Support Lot Of Things

Dec 23, 2009

I bought a new konica-minolta printer: Magicolor 4650 DN. It comes with lots of printer drivers. I use Windows 7 64 bit. I think the printer installed itself when I plugged it into the network router (linksys). Windows 7 found the printer and I added the printer and it seem to work, including settings / properties for duplex / grayscale / color / page layout / number of pages per sheet etc.

Question: This printer should support a lot of things and when I want to download software from the Konica minolta driver webpage, there are lots of things to download. Some of these have something to do with "ppd, pcl, xps" etc... I don't know what these things mean.

Here are some of the directory names I downloaded:

KMPPD64PSMINIwin=85
MC4650MONOwinx64
MC4650PCL6Winx64
MC4650PPDWin
MC4650PSWinx64
MC4650XPSMINIVista
MC4650XPSVistax64
UPDPCL6Winx64
UPDPSWinx64

Should I install all of these ? Why ? What extra will they give me ? I assume Vista-drivers are the same as Windows 7-drivers, right?

Bringing Things Back To Normal

Oct 4, 2009

To make this short, I just have two basic questions, for now...

1. How far can someone go in formatting a drive on their computer?

2. Let's say you bought a computer and it came with it all the necessary cds, which I think is the case with most computer purchases. Could you go as far as you can with formatting all the drives (C: drive, E: recovery drive, etc.) on the computer, and bring it back to normal with those cds (cds containing windows, dell software, etc.) of course disregarding other downloaded files like word docs, videos + music etc.?

Example: I downloaded a Video editing software trial (My friend uses it on his pc) Called "Sony Vegas". You may have heard of this. When I Open it loads and then jumps into "Sony Vegas 9 Is Not Responding" And it basically forces me to close the program! This also happens on when i try to Save programs, documents, and even notepad has stopped responding! Or when i try to save a file on google sketch up it freezes and i loose all my data. this is such an annoying problem so if anyone has a solution please note back to me ASAP

When Changes Obscure Methods To Remove Things

Jun 16, 2008

I have had Vista Business 32 for 2 weeks. While I find it so = similar to any other Windows application, it's okay. Some nice changes, = but even more obscure methods to remove things, such as How do I get rid = of the Microsoft feeds in the News Feeder Gadget? I am not interested in = what Microsoft has to say, I want my local news service in there, plus a = few others, and if I choose "All Feeds" then I get Microsoft's feeds = too, but I don't want them.

The help file is typically unhelpful. The mouse problem referred to in = so many previous KB documents has still not been fixed. Even though on setup we tell Vista that our currency is South African = Rand and our Time Zone is +0200, when setting the regional information = we still have to redo the time zone. DUH! Also, MSFT ought to know by = now that we do not use Letter Size paper but A4, and we use Arial fonts = not Times New Roman, and so the grievances continue.

Various Things Lock Up After A Variable Amount Of Time

May 17, 2010

Not very descriptive, but so the computer goes. Lets say I am updating a blog. And I refresh a number of times, once for each post. Not always the same amount of refreshes, but eventually I get the spinner upper right, and the status bar says either 'Done' or 'Stopped'. If I check email, first time fine. I close email. Over the next 2-5 hours, I open email again, close again, open again, Mozilla Thunderbird newest version, and it says cannot connect. The number of times it will work and then stop, varies. To fix either, I reboot, no need to do anything else, and they work fine again. I get the impression that if I have to connect to anything outside my home computer, this occurs. I haven't tried all software, but it happens with email, both browsers, and connecting to Everquest. So it isn't just one type of site/server. Just anything outside my home computer. I'm the only user and admin.

Article: 10 Things I Warned Microsoft About Windows

Mar 23, 2008

"I worked as an analyst when Microsoft developed Windows Vista. Execs asked for my advice, and they got it. Did they listen?" But of course the vistaboys and frank king of the apes, will just discredit him too... it seems like they think that their own experience is better than US pros.. yes me included... with over 25 years of computer experience, I know when an OS is POS.

let the mud flow freely for vista! let the truth shine, and THEN lets decide if we should use it or not... not get it shoved down our throughts in the dark (not mine but the average user) here is the text of the article

The imminent real release of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is reason enough to broach the question. SP1 is an important milestone for an operating system that bloggers and other critics consistently ridicule. Oh, yeah, the channel and enterprises aren't exactly loving Vista either. These 10 things are in no particular order of importance.

1. Windows Vista has to be a whole lot better than Windows XP. Microsoft had left XP in the market for a long time. That version of Windows had reached a..........

Configuring New Gaming With 32 Bit And 64bit Systems

Jan 7, 2009

I am currently in the process of configuring a new Dell XPS 630. I want the system to be primarily for gaming. I have yet to use a PC with Vista, so needless to say I am not familiar with it, let alone the difference between Vista 32-bit and 64 bit systems. The price difference between the 32- and 64-bit systems that I am debating between is very small. Anyway, my questions and concerns are. Is there an advantage to having a 62-bit version over a 32-bit version of vista when it comes to gaming? Any performance problems/issues of one or the other?

If I get the 64-bit version, will 4GB of RAM be enough for gaming or do I need more? Which processor will be better... Intel® Core™2 Q6600 Quad-Core (8MB L2 cache,2.40GHz,1066FSB) or Intel® Core™2 E8500 (6MB,3.16 GHz, 1333FSB)? How much hard drive space does the OS take up? Would a 500GB hard drive be a decent size. (assuming I plan to remove most games after they are completed)Here is the configuration Im looking at. Price with shipping comes to $1216 USD. Plus I have $550 worth of Dell gift cards I've been saving. Nice thing is 19in monitor is included.........

Disabled DELL Support On 64 Bit Systems

Apr 22, 2009

This is a very interesting release. It adds full support for a lot of new hardware. AMCC/3WARE users will be happy to see SMART data for all of their EIDE/SATA hard disks. Full Intel QST support has been added too (you need to RUN AS ADMIN on some OS). Support for new SMBuses (like nVidia MCP79 and SiS968) is there. New chips (like the ADT7470 and the ADT7462) have been added and support has been improved for some others. ITET8720 identification has been greatly improved. DELL support is now tested on more chipsets. Windows7 32 and 64 bit has been added and verified. Both the installer and the executable are now digitally signed. A lot of refinements, improvements and bug fixes were applied. Quote: 4.38
