Is there any way to restore the original desktop icons in Vista? Mine were somehow changed and I just want to get them back to normal. They no longer pop out when you scroll over them and some of them are smaller and have boxes around them and a blue arrow in the bottom left corner. I don't wat to restore the system to a previous date because I have downloaded things that I do not want to lose by doing that.

this looks like the closest i've found to a forum w/ my prob.
essentially i backed up my HD on an external (western digital) using "second backup" as the backup software.
i noticed after backing up that all my folder icons (favorites, contacts, music, pictures, etc...) reverted to the generic yellow folder.
i was able to change one or two (and only those in the shortcuts in "favorite links" heading of a windows explorer window) by right click -> properties -> change icon but all the folders (in their actual location eg. c:users"username") remain the ugly yellow folder.
changing them one by one seems inefficient and if annoying if it were to occur again.
i've done the right-click on destop -> personalize -> change desktop icon -> restore default, no result (tho i didnt really expect one since the desktop icons arent really the issue)
i've rebuilt the icon cache, no luck.
i've re-written the desktop.ini for a couple of them, no result (tho i didnt really expect one)
system restore isn't an option, i dont have an old enough restore point (hense the need for backing up).
i'm wondering of a systemic way to essentially restore the default icons for all these folders (music, video, downloads, etc...) and their respective shortcuts.
I've been using Windows Vista Premium for over a year now. So far I've no problems with it yet. However, just recently, I noticed that the icons for the computer and recycle bin were gone. Futhermore, the icon for some of the folders on my computer were either blank or a icon of the computer. Some files (ranging from the .dll to .exe) were changed to the computer icon as well. The icons for the floppy drive and my usb also disappeared and are displayed by the icon that represents file that windows does not recognise. How I can restore these icons? I have tried a system restore back a week when they were all still good but that did not make a difference.

Once Maxthon was installed and set as the default browser all of the shortcuts to web pages that i have (i.e. favorites folder) and a few on my desktop all use the maxthon icon. I am able to manually change them back to the "e" icon by right clicking and changing icon. What i want to do is set it so that every NEW shortcut i create, as well as the old ones automatically use the "e" icon instead of the Maxthon one.

I am getting ready to use Brink's tutorial on setting a scheduled System Restore point each day and I noted that he said that it was standard for Vista to make a Restore point each day at start up and one at midnight. Last time I looked I did not have these in my list of points, so I checked to see if the startup and midnight points were indeed enabled to be created. They were. But when I went to look at System Restore points available I had none of the startup or midnight points available. Further checking showed that 2 days ago when I installed Nero 9, it made 40 restore points in the 17 minutes it took to install! Why would it do that? Does it make any sense? I made one before I installed it, and okay, I could see it might make one itself before the install, but ... 40??!
So, am I correct in assuming that because of these 40 restore points the system is now not able to save the StartUp and Midnight points because I also manually have made one or two per day over the past few days, so it keeps the manual ones and the Nero ones and throws out the System-created ones because there is not enough room and they are the lower priority? Or what is going on here? I did not change my default system restore storage size or anything, it is set at default settings.
I'm having a problem with some of my document icons appearing as the "generic" icon rather than the program-specific icon that indicates what program created them. This occurs for all of my MS Office documents and Acrobat Reader PDF files. It does not happen for MP3 files.
The problem started a couple days ago following a botched System Restore to fix another issue. SR froze for about an hour in the "Initializing" stage, at which point I did a hard reset. Here's a rundown of what I've tried already. Nothing has worked.
1) Deleted iconcache.db from AppData/Local and restarted.
2) Restarted in safe mode and then in normal mode.
3) Changed the screen resolution to 16-bit and back to 32-bit.
4) Ran a few spyware scanners: Malwarebytes, Spybot, Adaware
5) Tried right-clicking on individual files and associating them with MS Word, Acrobat, etc.
6) Doing another system restore to "fix" the original aborted System Restore, but this one had to be aborted as well 7) Did plenty of Googling, which turned up nothing beyond the above fixes

In addition to needing help, it's the 'help & support icons' that = disappeared. I have no idea how to restore them. The icons are huge numbers with no extensions.
I suspect it may have something to do with a system restore. renamed all folders to folder[2]. and left empty folders in their places. Something else, I just installed a new program, went to the folder, and = made desktop shortcuts. The shortcuts are there, and they work. But they have = no icons.
I hit properties, the actual icons show there. I tried resetting the = icons, they reset, but not on the desktop. =46or some reason I also had to use UAC to reset the icons. This UAC is killing me. Every time it pops up I expect the machine will = lock up..
I just noticed that the Start Menu icons for Music and Favorites on my computer are just generic folders, but on everyone else's computer, they show customized icons. When my laptap was new and when I used it after re-formatting my hard drive. On all occassions after those two instances I can never restore back to any restore point. It always says that "unspecified error" line. If Microsoft doesn't know what happend, how could I. Why did they bother putting system restore if it doesn't work all the time anyway. Several days ago I deleted the 'powershell' folder, and, underneath that folder, was surprised to find a dead copy of the 'powershell' folder. The deleted 'powershell' folder was in the recycle bin, and an undeleted dead copy on the desktop. This dead copy cannot be accessed with selection, left-click, or right-click operations - so the 'Properties' info cannot be displayed.........

View 8 Replies View RelatedSo I just traded out my year old Gateway laptop (which stopped working) for a new Dell Inspiron. I've never been particularly impressed with Dell but the Tech Guy at Best Buy assured me the quality of their laptops had improved. Anyway, it came with Windows Vista Home Premium. Since it was a Dell it came loaded with a stardock with mac-like icons instead of desktop icons. I like it so I customized it with the icons for the programs I use most, stared typing up notes for medical school with MS Word, and started downloading music files.
So the other day I notice strangely that the dock had reverted back to the original icons that were present when I first got the computer. Then I noticed all of the files downloaded/saved to the harddrive had disappeared. So I start anew adding files and replacing most of the old ones. Then suddenly yesterday the dock changes again back to how it was...customized and the files that I originally had reappeared but now the files I saved when it changed the first time are gone. So what is going on? Is this some kind of glitch in the OS? Is there something wrong with the actual computer? how get my files back?
After installing SP2, on 5/25, System Restore seems to have stopped creating automatic restore points every 24 hours. I checked the Task Manger and it is set for 24 hours. It shows a restore point being created on 5/26. System Restore shows the last Restore Point being created on 5/25 about 1 hour after downloading.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a recent problem installing Windows updates on Vista Ultimate as the update process stays on 'creating restore point' forever. I've let it run as long as 7 hours in this state, with no change. It looks like the system is unable to make a restore point sucessfully. I know it has worked in the past, as I'm fairly up-to-date on Windows updates. Reading some other threads, I've tried using Disk Clean-up to remove all by the most recent restore points, and then try to disable/re-enable system restore - this part without success. When I check the system properties for System Restore, the System Restore button is greyed out. I've attached a screenshot of the screen for reference. I've checked the group policies to verify the System Restore is not disabled there.

That little window disappeared but then nothing hasppened. I was expecting to see a list of possible restore points but nothing showed on my screen. As it is restoring Norton sees the virus and removes it from my system but Norton can not see the virus inside the restore files. Right now my system is fine (virus wise) but I need to restore from an earlier restore point because I deleted some files and now my cd/dvd drive is not recognized. But like I said, I can not restore do to the fact that I have a virus buried inside my restore files. View 7 Replies View RelatedThe mystery, at least to me, my PC was running almost 2 years. and it was not until about 3 weeks ago that System Restore began to save Restore Points the size of Approx 3 to 4GB daily. Prior to that the Restore Points were well under 1GB. it would be 3 to 6 days before I noticed the loss of 1GB. So why suddenly would the Restore File grew 1 one day from well under 1GB to between 3 to 4GB? That now is the issue I would like to know the answer to. and perhaps that file being saved with each Restore Point is not needed. I mean it wasn't needed for almost 2 years. so I can't think over night it became important but it sure is eating up HDD space.
