I'm trying to run check disk but when I run it, it takes way-way too long. After an hour it was still only on 13% done, ad it was there for about 45 minutes already. At this rate, it would take about a week to go throuhg the whole disk.

How Long Takes To Upgrade 'average Workstation''?

Jun 22, 2008

We have to upgrade about 100 XP OEM XP professional workstations that are in a domain environment to Vista Business. Most of the workstations have a 'standard' mix of office suite software. A few may have some local data. Does anyone know about how long to upgrade an 'average workstation'' so we can budget time and resources for doing the 100.

Install Vista Od Seven Takes Long Time

Apr 9, 2009

when I install x64 XP, i have no troubles, but when I try to install Vista od Seven, both x64, installation takes ages... it does install at the end, but it just takes too long (read: 2 hours). After instalation, it continues to be slow, both of the cores are at 100%. I've search for a while for a solution, but I've found different answers for the same problem, none of them works. Is there anyone with the same/simmilar configuration and has no troubles with vista?

Join Domain Takes Long Time

Jan 18, 2010

I have a Vista Business and a Vista Ultimate laptop. I'm trying to join a Windows 2008 domain. It takes forever for both machines to join the domain. If I let it sit it eventually does maybe 40 minutes later. Then when I log off it takes about the same amount of time to log off? It seems like it eventually joins the domain but takes a VERY long time. I don't have this same issue with Windows XP machines..

Takes Long Time To Shut Down Hanging Process

Apr 18, 2008

When you click shut down, Vista doesn't shut down, or do anything for that matter. If it cannot terminate all processes, in about 3 to 5 minutes it will pop up this screen that say like "this process is hanging, click here to terminate and shut down" or something like that.

my internet speed is playing up real bad. I can browse and do what I want at normal speeds but as soon as I start downloading anything my internet slows down to an unbearable pace, web pages take so long to open that I have to cancel my download

Folder Takes A Long Time To Show Files

Mar 20, 2010

I have a folder with about 142 gigs of files in it and when I open it up, it takes sometimes 15 sec. before anything shows in the folder, while the little strip across the top of the folder does its "Progress" thing. Yes, I have Indexing on for that partition (this is a partition of my main hard drive; it is a 566g partition used only for archiving and it has 126gigs left).

What strikes me as particularly stupid about this is that it does the "progress" thing EVERY time, even if I close it and open it again 10 seconds later, it does not "remember" the indexing or whatever it just did! Is there any way to fix this? Seems absolutely ridiculous to have a super fast computer that can't find files in a folder without waiting 15 seconds!

External HDD, Cannot Rename Any File

Apr 21, 2009

I have an external HDD - Western Digital Elements 500GB. I formatted it to NTFS a while back. The HDD itself is fine. Vista Ultimate x64 has serious issues though. I am administrator, yet suddenly I cannot rename any file. I can't press F2, I can't right-click and do Rename (it isn't even on the right click menu), it isn't on the toolbar menu, just gone.

I've been renaming files all week just fine. Now this. It happened last week sometime too. Also sometimes it randomly decides that I can't add or delete anything to the drive. When I go into the Security settings, it says Admin has full privilege. When I try to set full privilege on User, I get an error message for *every file on the disk* saying that the file is Write Protected. It is not. Well it shouldn't be. This is another problem. Vista decides that every file on there should be set to Read Only. I uncheck the box, and it re-checks it when I reopen it.

Rename A File Lose Track

Mar 26, 2009

1) Rename a file and you lose track of it due to the automatic sorting feature. In XP you controlled this behavior by hitting F5. Words cannot describe my frustration over this!
2) Quite often when you Alt+Tab to an Explorer window, the focus is gone and you must click the file area to be able to navigate with the keyboard.
3) The "Burn"-button and its friends cannot be removed. This is a travesty!
4) The new column-filter thingy is cool sometimes, but it should be possible to turn it off!
5) The new remaining feature is good, but it should be easier to select the file extension if wanted. I'd suggest hitting F2 a second time should select the entire filename. Where's the creativity?
6) When you open a folder the first file should be selected. Total Commander has done this correctly for years now. They never learn at MS?
7) The path found in the address field cannot be dragged and dropped, as in XP. This feature is especially useful when copying paths to a command prompt... sigh!
8) changed behavior from "up" to "back". Annoying, but OK since "Alt+Up" does what you want.
9) This stupid "Grade" column tends to pop up everywhere I have source code files.

Long File Names In Vista Nothing Works

Feb 21, 2009

I'm running Vista Ultimate 32bit, and on one particular drive, I had backed up some files with extremely long names from a different system. The kind of stuff you find as temp files in the "Content.IE5" sub directory of "Temporary Internet Files."

Now, I'm trying to delete a parent directory where all these files are located. But Vista, in it's ultimate wisdom is giving me an error, indicating that it cannot delete these files becuse the overall path is too long - It suggested I move the files to a place with a "shorter path," but when I try, it won't let me do it for the same damned reason! The Source path is too long Nothing works.

Attempting to delete individual files, the parent directory, the "grand parent" directory all fail because Vista attempts to calculate/sum space and thus accesses each individual file, and fails because the "path is too long." When I try to rename individual files, it grays out the "rename" option. Is there any way I can either get rid of these files or bypass the "file length" warning so I can delete them? Formatting the drive is *not* an option. This is a SAN drive with lots of stuff on it and I'd never be able to off load it all.
