View 4 Replies View RelatedI picked up a shiny new PC yesterday much to the annoyance of the wife (oops) and verything seemed to be running nicley untill I wanted to use an old HDD like a USB memory stick for file transferes. I plugged it in and a little message popped up saying device installed (i think), but I could not find it anywhere. No folder or options as to which way I'd want to view the files and nothing on the "Computer" tab. It was like there was nothing plugged in. I know it should work as it shows on the wifes laptop with 32bit Vista on it.
A friend with a bit more Vista experience tried to install WMD from a menu which came up as failed and now tries to install on every time I switch the machine on. But also, now when I click the "Computer" tab, explorer crashes and hangs. Task manager tries to close it but nothing happens, so I have to reset the PC. It seems like the HDD is searching for something while it tries to close. Could my HDD be at fault or should I just reinstall Vista and cross my fingers? Games and the internet work fine, but I can't access the computer tab.
I have about 3 GBytes of picture files that I keep in my Pictures directory. I sometimes copy them all to a USB 'memory stick' partly as a backup & partly to use them on other computers. It takes quite awhile to copy & overwrite them all. I would like to copy/overwrite only those files which have been edited, or which are new. Should I be using some sort of advanced copy command, or should I be looking at the backup options, or perhaps the 'briefcase' (which I have never tried)? I have Vista home premium

Does it again a few times then it cut's out completely and the only way to fix it is by disabling the wireless network then enabling it again then starts over cutting out. This never happend with the USB wireless stick. With the usb stick it just froze every 60 seconds. Now that i have a pci card i think it's even worse. Can someone try and fix this for me, it's annoying as fuck. Also when gaming i loose connection on me and freeze but everyone else is moving, it's mostly everybody freezing though. and soon im not gonna put up with it and im just going to stop playing. I can't handle this.

1. Was not able get the time zone value to stick during setup, Had to reset after set up.
2. I successfully connected to the internet via dial-up, but I then changed the settings to not automatically dial. Now I cannot find the equivalent of "Network and dial-up connections". I want to create a shortcut on the desktop or a toolbar for each connection. How does one do this?
3. I have 2 desktop.ini icons on the desktop. Likely, because I told Vista to not hide any files.
4. How does find the equivalent of Windows Explorer?
5. Ditto for My Documents and My Computer.
When trying to copy a folder from a memory stick to my external HD it says Destination folder access denied. You need permission to perform this action. No doubt its something similar to my last post, but I can't seem to get around it. Any info would be great. TIA BTW I have 2 memory sticks and only one came up with this.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am about to install Vista64 home premium on a new build with 8 megs of RAM. The disk is Vista64 SP1. I was wondering if it is still recommended to install Vista64 with only 1 stick of RAM first prior to installing all 8 megs? Or because the disk has SP1, is this no longer an issue?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have recently installed software called 'Tune Up Utilites 2010' and immediately found a vast improvement and one its recommendations was to increase resolution to 1680 x 1050. Having then done that in 'Display Properties' it then advises to 'Set dpi to 96'.
However, I cannot find how to make changes to dpi.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI want to use my laptop with Vista x64 as both "HTPC" and as a Work computer. Problem: When using it as a HTPC i need to change the DPI scaling in order to be able to read any text on the 27" screen. This is perfectly fine, but when using it as a Work computer this DPI setting wont look nice on the 15" inch screen. So I have to change it and restart the computer, a very awkward process in the long run. One idea i had was to create two users with one used for the HTPC since the DPI setting is global (HKLM) together with screen resolution and other hardware settings (like sound output). I basically just changed the Font size, Icon size and Border sizes for the HTPC user. This works sort of but, unfortunately, only seems to be valid for the Desktop and a select few menus in Vista (like the start menu, main control paned window) most sub windows and dialog boxes are still displayed with the puny 9 pts font
Another wild idea might be to run a "DPI Change-script" at startup, if it's even possible to change the DPI that way. Has anyone tried anything similar? I suppose it needs a restart anyway, but at least it would be automatic. Is there a registry tweak to make the font change apply to everything in Vista. or, a tweak to make the DPI setting Local? (i.e only aplies to current user) I guess, if it would be possible to make Windows apply these (DPI) changes without needing a restart, that would be acceptable.
It use to be when I would open something it would put icons on the task bar on the right hand side. It would only show two at a time and you could Click the arrow to scroll through. All of a sudden it stopped doing that and it adds them on the left and shows all the programs. Any ideas how to get it back?

Group Policy is a feature of Windows that lets system administrators manage users' access to Windows features. If you think that Group Policy is preventing you from changing a setting that you need to access, contact your system administrator."
I have NO idea what this means.. this is my personal computer and is not part of any newtworks. I then tried to change my account type to "standard user" so i could fix the problem, but my computer won't let me. I even created a new user account and made that one a standard user but it didn't fix the probelm. How do i gain access to my power plan so i can modify it?
At first I had no problems for the last 4 months when I hooked up my new TV to my laptop. I didn't even change any graphic sttings. It worked great right out of the box. I am using a standard VGA-VGA cable. Last week I hooked up my laptop to an old CRT display to do our taxes. I had to play with the graphic settiings for the CRT monitor to look OK.
Now, when I hook up the TV to the laptop, it only has the middle part of the screen showing the desktop. I have played with the Graphic settings, but no matter what I do, I cannot get it to look like it did before with the wide screen.
I have setup a friends vista mail to authenticate via pacbell.net's servers for outgoing mail. All works well for a few days, then stops working. Upon re examination of the mail settings, the smtp port has reverted to 25 (set manually to 460 something) and the use ssl checkbox is unchecked. I have showed my friend how to re-set the settings so he is not losing much sleep over this one, but it annoys me.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI put in a new 120mm fan at the front of my case yesterday to increase air flow, and it does seem to be making a difference, just it's quite noisy. I've used speedfan to lower it to 60%, which makes it barely audible, but still good cooling.
The only problem now is that speedfan doesn't keep these settings after a restart, so is there a way/a program that can do this, so I don't need to do it through speedfan each time my PC starts up.
