Network Login Icon No Longer Displayed

Oct 5, 2009

I'm running Vista Home Premium SP2 on an Acer desktop with 2 gig of RAM. The computer is working fine and my internet connection seems quite normal. However, I just noticed that the little computer monitor icon that's supposed to be in the lower right hand corner of my display is not there. Normally when I hover over this icon a small indicator shows up saying I'm connected locally and to the internet. I tried looking in `Services.msc' for something that's been inadvertently disabled, but can't find anything relevant. I also tried re-establishing my IP address but this did not produce the icon either. Last thing I tried was `repairing' my internet connection to no avail. how to get this icon back on without rebooting.

Also, I cannot boot in safe mode and I cannot run system restore, i.e., its been runing for almost an hour with no result. I dont know what to do anymore.

Desktop Isn't Displayed In Network

Mar 23, 2008

I have a Desktop with Xp-home edition sp2, connected by ethernet-cabel to my Linksys Router and I have a Laptop, running Vista, connected wireless. On my Desktop I can find my Vista computer in my network. (Can't get into folders yet, but that is later to be solved). In the networkdisplay on my Vista laptop, I can't find my XP Computer. I did ping my desktop and it worked. SO, I tried to type the ip-adres of my Desktop in Windows-explorer and I could get into all the shared files. I have a connection, but the desktop isn't displayed in my network.

Power Icon No Longer Appears In Notification Area

May 29, 2008

I have an Acer laptop with Vista (SP1). Recently I have noticed the power icon no longer displays in the notification area. If I go to Taskbar and Start Menu Properties, Notification Area tab, the Power check box is grayed out and not checked. This may have happened as a result of installing SP1, which I did two weeks ago, but I am not sure. I did not notice this until three days ago.

I have tried a registry edit I found online (deleting any keys regarding "iconstreams"), but this did not help.

Connected To Network,, XP Pcs Can No Longer See Each Other

Apr 5, 2008

I'm having some issues with file sharing in a network with 2 Windows XP pc's and 1 Vista 32bit. One of the XP pcs has a McAfee firewall and the other XP and Vista have standard Windows Firewall. Since I updated to SP1, I am no longer able to access files on the XP pc's or vice versa (accessing Vista files on XP pcs). Vista can detect both computers but when connecting to them. Same thing on the XP pcs.. "The Network path was not found" when trying to access \VISTAPUBLIC.

Tried to reset firewall settings on Vista (read that somewhere) but it didn't help. The weird thing also is that. when Vista is connected to the network, the XP pcs can no longer see each other anymore. When I check the workgroup nothing shows up except the machine itself. When Vista is disconnected, the other XP machine shows up again. Both XP pc's have the LLTD installed (although that doesnt really matter in this case). There aint that much information, I'm desperately trying to get files transferred to my Vista laptop. I could use bluetooth but when the filesize is over 5 gb. well you get the point.

Network Drives No Longer Accessible

May 11, 2009

I have a vista machine, 32bit. I had it connected to my home network wirelessly and had a mapped network drive. I took the computer to a school, came home, and the mapped drive is no longer accessible.

1 - I have another Vista computer that has no problem connecting to the network drive.

2 - This computer still connects to the network, and has no problem going through the router and into the magical land of internet

3 - I recently bought an NAS, and again had no problem connecting the other Vista computer to the new drive. But, this computer will not map the drive. It is independent from the XP machine, so I know the XP vs Vista is not the problem.

Laptop No Longer Connects To Printer On Home Network

Feb 6, 2009

My HP dv2500 laptop running Vista used to work fine connecting to my printer over the local network via an XP-based main PC, which has a Kodak Printer hooked to it. At some point in the last few months, the laptop stopped being able to connect. I think this was around the time of upgrading to SP1, but cannot be sure. In any case, I even went so far as to rebuild my main PC and do a clean install of Vista on that machine, I can print from the laptop if I connect the printer directly into the USB port on my laptop, but cannot access the printer via the network anymore

- Printer sharing is enabled on both the PC and the laptop
- When I go into control panel - add printer - select network printer, the network printer appears in the pop-up box.
- Once I select the printer and click next, I get the following error: "Windows cannot connect to the printer. Make sure that you have typed the name correctly, and that the printer is connected to the network"........

Red X On Network Icon

Jun 10, 2009

Here's a problem that started around a week ago.
I have Windows Vista Home Premium
At startup, everything loads fine. The desktop and all my icons are there.
However, there is a red X over my network icon on the task bar.
I have to wait at least three minutes for the x to disappear before I can access the Internet.
I talked to my ISP provider and they reset my router. The problem still exists. The provider said the problem is on my end, not theirs.
I tried everything I could think of including cleaning and editing the registry and the problem persists.
Don't know where else to turn

Network Icon Says Not Connected But I Am

Jun 16, 2008

I have a fairly new dell laptop inspiron 1720 with wireless internet connection. A couple of days ago I noticed the little network icon on the bottom right of the task bar had a strange little blue blob on it. If I hold the mouse over it, it says 'you are currently not connected to any networks'. If I right click and then click 'connect to a network', that box shows that I am indeed connected and to the proper network. When I first start my laptop the small network icon says that I am connected to the proper network but 'local access only', and after a few seconds that goes away and I get the above message.

I tried going into the 'connect to a network' box and disconnecting the proper network, then reconnecting but that did nothing. I am able to access the internet, my email and everything else. I did nothing new to my laptop, no programs or anything. This is just anannoying little bug that I would like to fix if anyone knows how.

Network Activity Taskbar Icon

Sep 15, 2007

It's the network activity icon near the clock... I much prefer to know the exact activity of my PC and the internet/network PC.... in WinXP this icon would flash in tune with which computer was doing the "talking". This helped me many times figure out if it was an issue on my end or on the internet end depending on how the lights would flash. Not exact, but I used it as a quick guide. but in Vista, the icon seems to just have a simple animation that repeats over and over (I've turned on "enable activity animation). The icon has gone from something usefull (telling me which computer was sending data... to just being a simple animation that only animates when there's overall network activity. So anyway if getting the older more acurate activity animation back?... or would this require a third party download now?

Network Icon System Tray Show Up With A "red X Disappears

Dec 17, 2008

My home PC, running Vista and wired to the network, drops momentarily from my home network and looses the connection to the network printer. Usually happens when I click a link to a new page. An error comes up saying something like "page unavailable". I hit "refresh" and the page loads. I can sit at the PC and watch the network Icon in the system tray show up with a "red X" and then the red x disappears. The interesting thing is that my two laptops run wirelessly and wired to the network with out an issue. I am guessing it has to be something with the settings off myPC ethernet card? I tried updating drivers, but no new driver was available.

I also notice that in C:users folder, there is no folder with the new account I created, i assume that is why the error is appearing. I have done numerious virus scans, with norton, so thats not the issue. I have found other problems on the internet but they only appear to be having problems with the main account, my main administrator account works fine.

Multiple Login To Device/server W-same Login

What's up with Vista 64 (Vista) not allowing the same user; login/pass to acess a network device? I've got a small network in my office and I have just purchased a new laptop with Vista64 on it. I'm trying to access a Network drive device with my login/pass (it works on all other computers) but not the Vista64 box?

I get an error: "share is not accessible. You might not have permission (which I know my login/pass does becuase I'm logged in with XP on two other boxes). But there's the paragraph; "Multiple connections to a server or shared resouces by the same user, using more than one user name, are not allowed, Disconnect all previous connections to the server or shared resource and try again". What the heck I want to keep the same login (ME) to access a devise... is this really how it has to be with Vista?
