How To Activate (again) The Prompt Prior Of Opening An Attachment?
Feb 10, 2009
At one stage I did disable this prompt for a specific file extension, so that nowadays those attachments will open up at once. But now I'd like to reactivate such prompt.

I have an HP laptop with office. When I type out a paper in the word processor and attach it to an e-mail it cannot be opened - even on the same laptop. Any ideas/solutions? The attachment is in application/octet-stream. The two most abundant things in the world are hydrogen and stupidity.

When I receive a .doc attachment, I can't open it from the email. I get the message "the file cannot be found." If I save the attachment to a folder then try to open it, I am able to. Why won't it open directly from the email?

I recently go a new PC and had geek squad install some virus/etc software on it a remove gateway branded 'programs'...when I turned on the computer for the first time it seemed as though GSquad had installed everything as I had access to the internet, download photos from my camera, access Microsoft programs etc. When I tried to open the backup hard drive that I had from my laptop it said I needed to install Vista to proceed.
So I started to, following the prompts where it said that it would back up my previous files that I had, and it took several hours. Now that I have Vista, I realize that i don't have any of the picture files that I previously saved. I know I'm foolish not to have backed up the computer myself before the install but I didn't think it would erase everything. Normally I wouldn't be concerned but I just got engaged and we captured the moment in those photos. I know there may be no hope but I just thought someone out there might have a solution....

I am about to install Vista64 home premium on a new build with 8 megs of RAM. The disk is Vista64 SP1. I was wondering if it is still recommended to install Vista64 with only 1 stick of RAM first prior to installing all 8 megs? Or because the disk has SP1, is this no longer an issue?

the thread title says it all: I'm looking for a lightweight bootable command prompt which supports ntfs drives and supports x64 command line tools. Something like Freedos x64 or command.com x64 (if they existed which unfortunately they don't).
So far, all I can do is to boot into Windows' own command shell, but this is far from being lightweight. Every Linux supports booting into a pure command line mode, so there must be something similar for Windows with x64 support. Basically, the recovery console would suffice if it allowed using external command line tools, but afaik this is not the case.

Is there a way to bypass the security prompt under windows vista? Every time when I run the setup.exe I got a security prompt asking if I want to proceed further. I need to develop an application that will run a silent update in the background, and therefore I need to bypass the prompt to ensure the setup process will be executed without interruption. I have done quite a few research and couldn't find a solution to work around,

For power users Command Prompt is where you go to get work done quickly and efficiently. If you spend a lot of time using Command Prompt, why not customize the appearance and operation to your preferences? There are actually a few Command Prompt customizations that will make it more useful and good looking.
Just follow these steps to customize your Command Prompt:
Click on the Start Button and key in Command Prompt and hit Enter.
Once Command Prompt has started, right click on the top left icon in the menu bar and select Defaults. Alternatively you can select Properties if you want to have different settings for different Command Prompt shortcuts.
You will now see the four tabs of options to customize. The sections that I always work with are Font, Layout and Colors. To get started, click on the Font tab. Here you will be able to change the font and size used. If you would like a micro prompt as shown below, select Raster Fonts and size 4x6.
On the Layout tab you can specify the size and location of the window as well as the buffer. I usually only change the Screen Buffer Height setting. This controls how many previous command lines are saved and can be scrolled back up through. Increasing this value is useful if you are looking at a large directory with more than 300 files. I always increase the Height value to the max which is 9999.
The Color tab is where you get to have the most fun changing the look of your Command Prompt. Just select what you want to change the color for and then change the color.
Back on the Options tab I recommend turning on Quick Edit Mode. This allows you to easily highlight text without having to go to Edit -> Mark and copy it by just right clicking. Then you can paste it by simply right clicking once more....

Upon starting my computer I'm getting error 0xc0000428, ntoskrnl.exe is missing verified signature or something like that.
I am unable to use the startup repair from the recovery disc - I get an error called StartuprepairV2. I can not use system restore, and using cmd to copy the file from the DVD to my hard drive does not work (the file is still missing the digital signature). Bootrec doesn't fix the problem.
I have read somewhere that if startup repair does not work, you can update your vista version as a workaround. However I can not upgrade unless I delete SP1 first, but I don't know how to do that when I can't start windows.
Is there a way I can remove SP1 using command prompt ran from the recovery DVD? Or any other solution anyone can think of? (except for doing a clean install)

What is the administrator command prompt for 'defrag.exe' in 'cmd'? I am being asked when trying to open defrag.exe in cmd. It seems windows defrag was hijacked by DiskeeperLite, a downloaded program I thought was free, but turned out to be a mistake. When I want to run defrag now, I am asked to reinstall it via add or remove programs, which is not available in my Vista Home Premium, SP2, 32 bit. Is there a way to recover it? If not, that's not all bad, because I have 'Defraggler', which works quite nicely.

Here are a few tips that will help you become a Command Prompt Pro:
Turn on Quick Edit Mode. This will allow you to easily select, copy and paste all with just your mouse and a right click. Details Here
When typing in a file or folder name, type in part of the name and then hit the TAB key to bring up matches. Use SHIFT +TAB to go the other direction.
When searching for a file, type in dir part_of_filename* to look for the file in the folder. To search sub directories as well, append the /s flag as well. Example: dir exp* /s
Use the up arrow to go back over past commands. Alternatively you can hit F7 and go directly to the command ......
