How Set Up Desktop To Both Share Incoming Internet Connection?

Feb 17, 2009

I have a desktop running Vista ultimate32 with 2 Gigabit LAN ports. One is on the PCI bus and I have that one connected to my 4-LAN port wireless router as the router is a T-100 piece of gear, and my high-speed internet connection is nowhere near that speed. I also have a laptop runnings Vista Ultimate x64 that I normally use wirelessly and have sucsessfully set up a local network on it for sharing files and media via Windows Media Sharing. I want though to be able to connect the laptop directly to the desktops second gigabit port (the PCI-E one) via CAT-5 cable because large files take forever to transfer to the laptop when i connect either via Wireless-g or plug it directly in to the router. How do I set up the desktop to both share the incoming internet connection and allow me to transfer files directly to the laptop.

Hp 5550: Direct Connection By Not Via Network Share Permalink

Feb 7, 2008

HP deskjet OK direct connection by not via network share permalink. I have a HP deskjet 5550 printer connected to a XP pro (32 bit), it is shared. I have no problem using this shared printer either from the local XP machine or another XP machine. I had no problem using the share when I have Vista Ultimate 32 bit installed. However the Vista Ultimate 64 bit gives an error stating the server does not have the correct drivers, and requests that I supply and inf file. Searching the HP web site they state the vista already has the drivers. I connect direct using a USB cable and can print without issue. Even after that no luck connecting via a share.

Remote Desktop Can't Get Connection

May 30, 2008

I am trying to connect to my Vista Ultimate 32 machine from an XP Professional machine. I can't get a connection or even an attempt at a connection. Here is what I've tried so far.

- I turned off the Windows firewall.
- I am connecting from another computer inside my network.
- I have tried both the (less secure) and (more secure) options in the Remote desktop area.
- I have tried to telnet to my machine to port 3389 and it fails to connect.
- I can ping the machine, see shared directories and connect to remote management.
- I have turned on all services having to do with remote access and terminal services.

So just clarify, it isn't a router issue, I am just trying to connect from one machine to another inside my network. Once I get that working, I will setup the router. I have been searching around for a while trying to find the answer to this problem. I have seen a hundred posts related to this topic but they all seem to end to at "try to telnet to port 3389" with no further responses

VPN And Remote Desktop Connection

May 30, 2008

I have a new Lenovo with Vista for business OS (that replaces my old thinkpad on XP). At my office, I am able to use remote desktop connection to remotely operate my work pc (a VISTA business OS) - by attaching to the work network by wire. However, at home I use the VPN to connect to the work network. THe VPN connects just fine but the RDC comes up with the error message "This computer can't connect to the remote PC." At home I have a 3 PC wired network with the notebook being one of the connections. THe other PCs are XP pro's and can connect via the VPN and RDC to my work PC with no problems.

I've read the posts and it seems there isn't a clear answer to this problem. Also, if there is a fix that affects my home network, then what happens when I'm traveling and use the broadband connection in a hotel? If the issue is opening ports, I'll need some help as my experience with my router (netgear) is basic to moderate. I need to resolve this as I leave town in a week for business and I need to connect

SP1 Remote Desktop Connection

Just installed SP1 on Vista Business here at work and now we are unable to RDP to a Windows 2000 box that we use. Is there some new elevated privileges canceling this out that we can disable and go back to? Error: Because of a protocol error, this session will be disconnected. Please try connecting to the remote computer again. The server is up that I'm telneting too (we have XP machines that reach it fine) and I can telnet to it from the Vista machine.

XP Share Across Internet "net Use" Not Working

Mar 23, 2008

A nightly robocopy mirror batch file across the internet. The connection/setup has never changed and XP to XP still works today. My new Vista to the XP (across town) is the problem. I had to purchase Vista x64 and built a brand new machine. Very little software on this new desktop and it is litterally 2 weeks old. I have tried disabling the firewall, McAfee Virusscan, etc. Removed IP6, changed most of my settings back to XP look, feel and still no go. Vista things that work are pretty much everything as long as its to do with the local network. This includes net use, firewalls on, mapping drives, remote desktop, you name it. Outside the network for internet and things do work as well, eg. ports 80, 21, 3389, 25, etc.

So far all I know is port 139 is the only does not work and is what I need. As stated before my ole XP desktop is letterally beside my new Vista and continues to work this port 139 if I ask it to, so this shows that the network portion/tracert is there and configuations are working and this has to do with the something inside the new Vista x64. I get the network path not found error 53 or 0x80070035 under the GUI. I changed the "Outbound Rules" for port 139 btu still no go. What can I do? You would not believe what I've tried over a weeks worth of reading, implementing and changing but I have reverted them all back, so each change starts from square one as it is a brand new install.

Remote Desktop Connection Via RD From Biz To Home Premium

Feb 6, 2009

I am trying to connect via RDC from a Vista Biz machine to a Vista Home Premium machine. It is calling for my credentials and I can't find anything that will tell me what my credentials are supposed to be. All I can find in forums are questions about why Vista won't save them. I just want to know what they are. Neither machine is password protected, so what should I enter? The username for the Biz machine? The username for the Home machine?

Neither? What about the password? In any case, I am (of course) denied access with a message saying "Your credentials did not work".

I can establish a VPN connection OK but when I try to connect to my work computer using RDC I get a "Windows Security" box saying 'Looking for credential tiles...'. Then it just seems to keep searching and the next input box never shows up. Interestingly after I cancel RDC the application stalls but I don't get a "No response" error - it just hangs and nothing can be input in that window. I have to go into Task Manager to manually End Task.

DNS: Connection To The Internet

I can ping my ISP and Ping the ISP's website. so it seems that I have a DNS misconfiguration, question is what do I start looking for?

Netcomm internal modem IN5920 and have tried a swansmart internal modem and a webexcel external modem with the same results. I can start to download virus defs Etc but will drop the Internet connection as soon as I touch the browser and be just left with a local connection. Cannot Browse, Have Internet Connection

May 5, 2010

I cannot browse the net, but am definitely online. I have an HP desktop with Vista OS. I have wireless and I know everything is fine with the connection, because I am typing this post off an XP laptop which is using the same modem.

Yesterday the problem began when I uninstalled a DivX player that I dont use. I have read up on this and other sites and can't find a solution. Everytime I try to browse from the desktop I get the HTTP 403 error message. I have tried rebooting, "winsockfix", several command prompts, pinging, the IP address is fine, I am all out of ideas.

Can somebody please point me in the right direction, I have spoken to HP, AT&T and the store I purchased the computer and no dice, anywhere.

Losing Internet Connection

May 15, 2010

This has been an ongoing problem for around 6 mths now and is really getting to me now. Namely the dropping of the internet. I can be merrily surfing the net one minute and then the next if I go to a site I get the message "looking up XXXXX". At this time my taskbar internet icon can be showing the internet connect to be either "local" or "local and internet". Now obviously if local I will lose it but if it's saying "local and internet" why doesn't it work? It will eventually drop back to local everytime. Even though at all times the ADSL line light on my modem/router is showing solid.

The problem is intermittent. I can have best part of a day without trouble, then it may happen lots of times in a short period. To get it back requires reboots of the modem/router and/or reboots of the PC. I have tried 3 different modem/routers all do the same. Now losing patience

SP1 Causes Problems With Internet Connection

Apr 15, 2008

After installing Windows Vista Service Pack 1 I lost my internet connection. I kept trying to open various websites in Internet Explorer and eventually I was able to download partial, sometimes even complete web pages, although IE wasn't displaying them, presumably because various resources on the page weren't downloaded yet (I used View Source in the empty browser window to see what it had downloaded up until that point and in most cases it was only half of a web page). Some sites began to work all of the time, such as Google.com, while other sites didn't work at all, like Microsoft.com.

I persisted to keep trying to connect to various web sites, assuming that it was just a major coincidence that my network connection was failing at the same exact time that I installed SP1, but after several hours now I'm still having the same exact problem and some research has turned up that I'm certainly not the only person to experience internet connection issues due to having installed SP1.

I've tried the following:.........

Connection To Router But Not The Internet

Mar 23, 2008

I am having problems getting a wireless internet connection for a friend who has just bought a new laptop with Windows Vista. He connects through a Netgear, wireless router however the network connection on the laptop shows as local connection ok however there is limited access due to no internet connection. The adapter has a router assigned IP address of 192.168.0.3. The gateway, DNS server and DHCP server address all show the 192.168.0.1. I have connected to the admin console on the router and the router has been assigned a public address and DNS address from the ISP (AOL ADSL).

I disabled encryption and mac authentication incase for some reason this would be causing it but its still the same. He has a desktop PC hard wired to the router and this connects without any problems. The IPConfig of the adapter is much the same as the wireless adapter on the laptop with exception of the IP address which is 192.168.0.2. I can get a connection to the internet if I hard wire the laptop however when connecting wireless it once again gets a local intranet connection but no internet. I can ping the local network and the gateway but nothing beyond the gateway.

I have done the usual things in the way of power cycling the router/modem and disabling/repairing network connections etc. I recall having the same problem around 2 months ago for another friend. They were using a cable modem with an Actiontec router. I did as I did above and even tried 2 different routers with no change. My XP laptop connects fine.
