How Do Increase Gaming Performance
Jun 8, 2009
I have a Dell 710H2C, Quad Core, 4GB RAM (soon to be 6GB), 2 striped 10,000 RPM HDD's, 2 Nvidia 8800 GTX SLI video cards. OS is Vista 64 ultimate. I am an avid World of Warcraft and Counterstrike player. I want to improve the performance of my system. Frame rates stink when the graphics are maxed. This system should be performing a lot better. Sometime frame rates drop to 20FPS. Been reading a lot of stuff on-line about improving performance. First off when I run SLI mode games usually lock-up. Been told by Blizzard tech support that they don't support SLI. Ready to pull my hair out!

i have a laptop here that my aunt bought for me..... but it doesn't seem to be able to run most games even at LOW settings properly. It can run some games though. I believe that is because i'm using an integrated graphics card. I'm using the Nvidia Geforce 7150M
I have NO intention of maxing out games... i just want to play a few lower-end games on low-slightly higher than low. I hear that i can install a new graphics card over the integrated one and make the computer ignore the integrated card. My questions are :
1. If i do this is there a possibility for gaming performance increase?
2. Is it even possible?
3. What graphics cards can i get?
4. Can i get an EXTREMELY detailed (stupid-person proof) guide on exactly what to do?

That darn 32 vs 64. I currently have a 32 bit computer with the specs of...---4Gb Ram---Nvida 8700 512mb---Core 2 Duo T9300 2.50Ghz--- Would/could i get better fps or even a quicker computer by installing Vista as 64bit? I read somewhere that all 4gb is being used but its just not adressed by windows? or something to that effect

I'm really interested in a possibility of increasing my CPU performance on my Vista Ultimate 32-bit PC. Cooler Master Gemin II processor cooler (non-stock) Note: Windows Experience Index is 3.0 because of Processor, all other ratings are 4.5 and higher! Note 2: I have all newest motherboard (and other) drivers! Question: Should I try overclocking, and if yes, by how much, and how?

Just wondering if anyone has had any issues and/or problems since SP1 was released today.I know it may be too early to tell what with the manufacturers rushing to create drivers that will actually take advantage of the over 550 hotfixes incorperated into SP1, but so far for me at least I have seen at least a 20% increase in overall gaming performance and system response. One main thing I've seen that has not improved is any source games. It seems the source engine is either not a fan of vista, or the 8800 series cards. But as for games such as World of Warcraft and Unreal Tournament III, all seem to have an increase in FPS and load times. If anyone has a positive or negative comments for SP1, please let me know; very curious to see what Microsoft has accomplished/screwed up.

Windows Vista throttles your network bandwidth when you are playing any multimedia file such as an MP3 or a video. This was designed to ensure the CPU has enough free cycles available to play your media without skipping. The down side is that when you are playing a multimedia file you will notice that your network speed of file transfers will decrease on high speed network connections. By default when you are playing a multimedia file your network transfers are limited to 10 packets per millisecond.
In Windows Vista SP1 Microsoft introduces a registry key that allows you to customize this setting....

I have two physical hard drives. Both are identical. I want to move my Page File to my second drive to see if I get a performance increase. I did some research and learned that you must keep a small page file on your C drive because Windows writes a small amount of data to the C drive upon boot. Does anybody have experience with this setup?

I just recently purchased a new laptop with the following specs:.....It shipped with 32-bit Home Premium, but I was thinking about using 64-bit. I use Photoshop CS3, MS Office, the usual apps really. Will there be any performance increases with x64? Will there be more power usage with x64? Could the machine be slower due to Macro-Op Fusion being disabled in EM64T mode? All of apps I have will work on x64, but which one is more efficient for my notebook?

I thought I would share this with you all, a few little tricks to boost Windows performance. If you have a spare USB flash drive or you are willing to get a cheap say 1GB flash drive. First we plug in the flash drive. Go to Disk Manager and assign it a drive letter, like Z: (this is just to get it out of the way and optional). Go to Advanced system settings, Evironment variables. Change the Temp variable under User to Z: (I didn't see any point creating folders, but that's optional). Change the Temp variable under System variable to Z:
This will cut down on I/O traffic to the hard drive. Starting an app like Word, would cause the HD to read the program into memory while at the same time writing into the drive, temporary files. This causes an I/O queue to form and degrade Windows performance. By off loading some of the I/O traffic to another storage device, the hard drive read/write head doesn't have to move around as much either. All performance gains.
Another trick I tried was moving Windows Search Index to a flash drive, but it won't let me select even a 16GB flash drive. Even though the Index doesn't grow beyond 1GB. It's max size seems to be just under 1GB. You can move to it to a removable drive, though. I rebuilt the Index on an external 500GB USB drive. Again, this cuts down I/O traffic to the internal hard drive..........

Internet Explorer 7 only allows you to download two files from the same server at a time. This is not a software limit but rather a limit imposed based on the web standard. Since this is simply a software setting, it can be modified and you can increase the limit to something much high such as 10. Follow the steps below to increase your max downloads from the same server:...

I am looking for a new gaming mouse, but I have no idea what to get. So far I have narrowed it down to a Logitech G5 or a Microsoft Sidewinder. I currently have a Logitech G7, however to get a new one is out of my price range. ($50-$70 Canadian). Any other suggestions out there? Leave a note of what you use personally as I am open to any opinions

One game I tried recently was Callof Juarez. A friend brought it over to try and see if it would work after I told him I have trouble getting games to work. I can only find generic Aspire manuals online, nothing specific to my model.
I have tried to see what kind of video card is installed but in my device manager, under sound, audio controllers it only describes the audio cards, no mention of video card. I therefore assume it is a generic card that probably is not capable of gaming, BUT Acer did give me a nice screen saver that shows a clip on gaming, (b-astard-o's)...........

1.- Would I be able to run both on SLI?
2.- Would I really be doing my gaming gameplay any good or not much.

The progression of software and gaming technology:
As times goes on, technology inevitably advances. Back in the 1980s, words like megabyte were considered to represent a large amount of space on a hard drive or in total system ram. In the mid 1990s, we began to see megabytes in mass numbers when it came to RAM. At present, we are in the midst of the first decade in the 21st century: Hard drives are just now begining to be meassured in terabytes and ram is being meassured in multiple gigs.
With the increase in horsepower and ranchspace that fuels PCs as they advance, software becomes hungrier and hungrier of these resources. If you try to run Windows XP on a PC built for Windows 95, you will note that the entire system may come to a hault. Likewise, if you attempt to run Windows Vista and DirectX10 games on a machine built for Windows XP, you will encounter similar results!
This means that with each new installment of Windows that there is a new set of standards for system requirements to run the operating system. Windows Vista is more hungry than Windows XP when it comes to your system's resources. Everything you run will run slower on Vista due to the simple fact that Vista uses more of your system, so, do not post your frame rates and ask us, "why are they lower!?".
Windows XP was designed to run with a reccomended 512mb of ram and an optimal 2gb of ram for gaming. If you disagree with me, try running Battlefield 2142 in Titan Game Mode on a 64 person server with maximum detail if you think windows XP doesn't want 2gb of ram for optimal performance. When converting to windows vista it is important to note, Vista uses more of your base system, so, your system should be proportionately stronger in order to strong the performance dip!..................

Basically im quite upset and angry at the fact i just bought a beautiful new machine, thinking ill be able to finally game propelly, to only find that.. I get these 2-5seconds where my gaming ( World of Warcraft ) freezes completely. Basically from what i've read its something to do with Vistas wireless that searches for a new and better connection every 60seconds. My computer is NOT connected to the router, it has a 3/5 signal strength and my ping is OK. Its just these lag spikes that are killing me. I've tried VISTA Anti-LAg and the WLAN optimizer. Nothing works at all. Anyone have ANY other suggestions as to what i can do to get rid of these 2-5second lag spike/freezes with my gaming? Im running VISTA Premium x64bit...
