I've seen several posts concerning the inability to Remote Access a Vista (x86) Home Premium machine. I can easily access my Vista desktop from an MCE2005 XP machine using Live Mesh -- at least from behind the NAT on my home network. Am I to understand that this is definitively not possible from a remote computer over the internet?
View 6 RepliesI am trying to connect via RDC from a Vista Biz machine to a Vista Home Premium machine. It is calling for my credentials and I can't find anything that will tell me what my credentials are supposed to be. All I can find in forums are questions about why Vista won't save them. I just want to know what they are. Neither machine is password protected, so what should I enter? The username for the Biz machine? The username for the Home machine?
Neither? What about the password? In any case, I am (of course) denied access with a message saying "Your credentials did not work".
Does the Home Preium edition of Windows Vista have the Remote Desctop Connection option?

Wanting to make a shortcut for a hot-button on my keyboard to create "sleep" mode -- that is, awake computer from keyboard of mouse movement, and am baffled. Must admit the hibernate mode is good for ending a days work, but often I wish to manually induce 'Sleep'.
I have been having more or less continuing problems with my HP OEM Vista Home Premium. Several times a day it has been hanging up whether I am using Firefox (preferred) or Internet Explorer. I have checked with every tool I can put my hands on but with no positive results. I am now looking at: Reinstalling Vista OEM (would loose all my data information, bookmarks, purchased tools, etc). Buying a copy of Vista Home Premium Upgrade for about $60 or so on Ebay. By doing this could I do a repair on Vista without loosing all my info? Buying Norton Internet Security or a version that hones in on Vista.

They share the same modem, I just connect it to Vista computer or XP. Vista says it's an error 851. When I try to set up a Phone connection (like it works on XP), the only modem that's shown is an internal modem, not the ADSL one.

I've been lurking here on the forum for a while now and having seen quite a few folks having problems with their upgrades, I thought a post sharing the steps I took, which resulted in a Smooooth and problem free upgrade, might be of interest to some.
In no way am I advocating or recommending ANY of the steps that are shown here (i.e. turning off the firewall, etc.).
First phase:
-Purchase and download the upgrade to my hard drive (shoparhive.com was less costly than digital locker). Since I live 40 miles away from the nearest store, I preferred the digital download.
-Extract the .iso file using winrar to an empty folder on the desktop.
-Performed full system virus scan.
-Performed full system spyware scan.
-Performed full system backup to the removable HP media drive.
-Burn the downloaded iso file to dvd, and the extracted files to another dvd.

I'm running Vista Home Premium 64 bit on a new HP pavilion laptop. I'm trying to log into my work system remotely. The error I'm getting is "This computer can't connect to the remote computer. Remote desktop cannot find the remote computer. Type the computer name or IP address again, and then try connecting" I've tried the help desk at work, they say they know there has been issues with people loggin in with Vista, but its been resolved. But they have not actually been able to help me log in. They are running Windows NT.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI had windows XP pro and i bought windows vista home premium upgrade, when i went to install it it said that i couldn't upgrade it. So i followed directions on how to do a custom clean install, where you install vista without typing in the product key and without getting updates then you pick what OS you have and do the custom installation, then you install again (2nd time) and choose upgrade instead of custom and go through the process again.
The problem is after installing it the first time, I couldn't connect to the internet, so I couldn't install it a second time. I have an ASUS PQ5 PRo motherboard and when i start up there is this thing called express gate, in express gate I can use the internet but not when i enter Vista. When I put in the PQ5 Pro DVD vista says it can't open it. Also my XP PRO may have been 64bit, and now I am on Vista32 bit and the disck wont work.
I think the internet is a driver problem, if i go to the asus website on a diff computer and get the ASUS drivers put them on a USB and then open them on vista should this work? WHat drivers do I need? Just the LAN one? Also if the Asus DVD wouldnt start up will that mean that I wont be able to open the drivers on the flash drive too?
I've been trying to set up a remote desktop connection between my laptop and my desktop both running on Vista Home Premium. Why does this error come up:
"This computer can't connect to the remote computer."
when they are both connected (wirelessly) via the same network.
I am stumped as to an issue I am having using remote desktop. I have several machines in the office that have been using RD for a while without issue. All are XP SP 3 machines. I have a new Vista Ultimate machine that I am trying to remote to with an XP machine. I have set up RD on the Vista Machine, Firewall is checked, forwarded to the correct port, set the port rule on the router...all the typical issues I am aware of. Everytime I try to connect I get "This computer can't connect to the remote computer. Try connecting again. If the problem continues, contact the owner of the remote computer or your network administrator." I can ping the Vista machine and I can remote from the vista machine to any RD enabled machine.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI am trying to connect to my Vista Ultimate 32 machine from an XP Professional machine. I can't get a connection or even an attempt at a connection. Here is what I've tried so far.
- I turned off the Windows firewall.
- I am connecting from another computer inside my network.
- I have tried both the (less secure) and (more secure) options in the Remote desktop area.
- I have tried to telnet to my machine to port 3389 and it fails to connect.
- I can ping the machine, see shared directories and connect to remote management.
- I have turned on all services having to do with remote access and terminal services.
So just clarify, it isn't a router issue, I am just trying to connect from one machine to another inside my network. Once I get that working, I will setup the router. I have been searching around for a while trying to find the answer to this problem. I have seen a hundred posts related to this topic but they all seem to end to at "try to telnet to port 3389" with no further responses
I'll preface this with the fact I am only so knowledgeable about this IP stuff. I am all my computer challenged family has to rely on so I want to be able to see what happening on about three other computers in three different locations. I am a serious cheapskate so I tried some Shareware called "Anyplace control" worked great through the online account but slow. There is apparently a direct connection option but I need a static ip to make that happen. So keeping it as simplistic as possible for me how do I get my mother Vista laptop, my two daughters Win 7 laptops able to be remote tweaked from either my Vista laptop or XP desktop. I am not locked into that software it was just easiest at the time.

At my office, I am able to use remote desktop connection to remotely operate my work pc (a VISTA business OS) - by attaching to the work network by wire. However, at home I use the VPN to connect to the work network. THe VPN connects just fine but the RDC comes up with the error message "This computer can't connect to the remote PC." At home I have a 3 PC wired network with the notebook being one of the connections. THe other PCs are XP pro's and can connect via the VPN and RDC to my work PC with no problems.
I've read the posts and it seems there isn't a clear answer to this problem. Also, if there is a fix that affects my home network, then what happens when I'm traveling and use the broadband connection in a hotel? If the issue is opening ports, I'll need some help as my experience with my router (netgear) is basic to moderate. I need to resolve this as I leave town in a week for business and I need to connect
Is any one using Vista to log into an computer with XP ? I am reading that we can't do this with Vista to XP. I was thinking of getting a new computer and do that. I have been using XP Home Edition and Logging into my XP pro ok. But what I read is Vista will not let us do that.

I'm going to go nuts. I VPN into work all the time. All of a sudden, 2 days ago I cannot connect to my computer. I am running Vista 32 Home. I am running XP Pro at work. The VPN connects, but when I attempt to log into my computer, it just sits there with the blue screen and the small window dialog for about 20 seconds, then closes. The PC Tech guy was able to Remote Desktop into my computer from his, but I can not longer do it from here. So, before I toss it out the window and go MAC

Is there some new elevated privileges canceling this out that we can disable and go back to? Error: Because of a protocol error, this session will be disconnected. View 5 Replies View RelatedThis is strange. I have two nearly identical HP laptops. Both are the same model, but one (that gives trouble) has some additional hardware (video) features. Both are running Vista Home Premium 64 and have all the updates applied. I am trying to open a RD session on an XP Home Pro machine. One of the HP's works without a hitch. The other one gives up with a "Cannot Connect" message (but, of course, no details about what went wrong.) System logs on the XP and both laptops don't reveal anything that I can find. I tried copying the .rdb file from the one that works to the one that doesn't. That made no difference. The failing laptop can ping the XP system, and file and printer sharing work fine. The user id's on both laptops are the same - the user accounts are set up the same on each.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am on a corporate domain running windows vista. There is apparently a group policy that is preventing me from starting the windows firewall service. That's fine since I don't want to use it anyways. Before joining the machine to the domain, I enabled Remote Desktop. Now, even though remote desktop is enabled, I cannot connect to the vista machine from my XP machine. I tried to telnet from the xp machine to the vista machine on port 3389 and it failed. So my suspicion is that I need to open up this port on the vista machine somehow. What I don't understand is what's blocking the port? The firewall is disabled (service is not running) and I haven't installed any other firewall software. Also, both machines are on the same subnet and remote desktop connections are possible on other machines over the LAN, so I don't believe it's anything that needs to be changed on a router. This is starting to drive me insane! (I'm a software developer, not a system or network administrator, so this is really a weak spot in my knowledge.)

It worked when my laptop Windows XP sits close to the Vista HOME PC, when the laptop is using wireless and the Vista is using Internet LAN connection. I made sure my Kaspasky Internet Security Firewall is open for RDP port. But the moment when I move out of my home, and bring the laptop to an outside network, I cann't connect to the Vista Home PC anymore. If RDP to Vista is not an option. I have enabled the Remote Destop options on both OS's but neither machine is being found/listed in the Remote Desktop Connection screen.
Also i have opened up my XP remote desktop connection port on my router, but i cannot find my port number in Vista for remote desktop.

Today I allowed remote assistance on my vista machine and found i couldnt connect. I looked it up and realised that the remote desktop, usually under the remote assistance option, was gone. I had set vista to install the recommended updates only, but being vista, about 5 out of the 25 didnt install. Im guessing the remote desktop functionality is in one of these updates i have not installed, my question is: which one. Or is it not in the "recommended" updates, and if so, could you give me a clue which updates i should be installing to return remote desk... However if there is some kind of command that unlocks it or something, even better! This forum looks great, im sorry to start with a qustion though D;!!!

Computer I want to access via RDC (Computer Name on RDC Screen) CompName.Domain. XP Pro connects and brings up RDC terminal to machine to login. Entering in the login and password logs into the machine. Vista Business asks for credentials when logging into Domain: CompName.Domain. No RDC Terminal comes up. The login and password entered gives an error message that "This computer can't connect to the remote comuter".
Has anyone else experienced the problem of an active connection REMOTE DESKTOP window going black without any error message? I suspect this may happen when someone on the host computer interrupts the connection, but there may be other reasons also. The problem is that we do not receive any error message indicated the nature of the disruption?
