I helped a friend select and install a new desktop w/Vista Home Premium. I set up Windows Mail to replace her Outlook Express she had used on her old XP desktop. Whenever she shuts down her computer, the folders column on the left goes away. She has to do View, Layout, Folder List to get it back. It stays there on subsequent uses of Windows Mail until the next time she shuts down. I'm going to suggest she Hibernate, not Shut Down, until I find a fix for her.
I like to sort my Recycle Bin by the Date Deleted column. But I always have to add that column every time I open the Recycle Bin and it never sticks. How do I get the Date Deleted columns to stay there?
I am using excel and trying to find out the probability of a number from column G2 and divide it by 36 to get a decimal (being the probability). [ =G2/36] However, when I use the CORRECT equasion, all it does is give me a random date!! It says 'Jan-00'. I have NO idea what to do and i really need help fast; it's for a project.
if the width of a particular column (Name, type, total size, etc) can be permantly adjusted. I am tired of dragging the Details or Name column to more width so to see all information. It always opens a window in default at about 1 1/2 inches wide. Never wide enough to see all.
I thought that by selecting 'Apply to Folders' in Folder Options it would apply to all folders. But I still find myself changing the folders to 'List' and removing the column headers. I have Vista Basic sp2 and have thought they would have corrected this by now. Or, is there a problem with my system?
Sometimes a Search will produce results with column headings "name", "date taken", "size" and "folder". Sometimes it will produce other headings as well or instead. And sometimes it will produce results that only give one column heading... "name". What is going on and how can I get it to display only the column headings of "name", "date", "size" and "folder"?
WMP 11 is behaving erratically i.e unpredictable, unstable - when trying to avail of the option "Paste Album Art Here" The option is available sometimes, and then disappears? Also options in "Tag Editor" are greyed out? Example:
i have a Samsung SH-S223Q Drive. It was working fine for a while, then suddenly it won't read any cd's or dvd's. Basically what happens is, i insert a cd and the drive disappears from my computer and device manager. I can scan for system changes and the drive shows back up, but if i try to run the cd it disappears again. Haven't been able to find the same problem on here after searching. Found similar problems but none of the those fixes seem to work.......
HP Pavillion dv9500 notebook running Vista Home Premium. I installed a 2nd SATA hard drive in bay 2 og the notebook and now my DVD RAM drive has disappeared from Explorer, Drive Management, and Device Manager. I swapped out the DVD drive with a new one to rule out hardware failure, but the problem persists. Does anyone have a clue as to why this has happened? I want my DVD drive back!
I installed a new, second HDD. I initialized it and began formatting it on Disk Management. When I just came back after being away from the computer for a few minutes, I noticed that the whole HDD, not to mention its formatting process, had completely disappeared from Disk Management! The HDD is still physically connected, it wasn't taken away by a fairy. What caused this and how to prevent it from happening?
I had this problem recently , when i open any window ( Windows Explorer, Firefox, IE ... etc ) my taskbar disappears without a reason. On the other hand when i minimize all the applications the taskbar appears again this is so annoying because i cant switch between my applications easily and i must press Alt+Tab to switch between them, besides i love the presence of the taskbar so i can see the time, in breif the absence of the sidebar makes me pissed off. this is my normal view of the disktop ( When everything is minimized ) : but when i maximize any window the taskbar disappears and the view SUCKS and looks like that: i tried everything possible, note that the Auto-hide the taskbar option is not enabled.
Awhile back I was given instructions on how to change the folder standard green folders to new pink folders. Well, my computer crashed out and I had to get a new hard drive. I tried to follow the instructions from the previously solved thread, but I can not find the "desktop.ini". When I go to the users folder inside my choices are Administrator and Public and I can not find the "desktop.ini" file. I have windows vista.
When I try to download something. It downloads but then I can't find the file.I save them to desktop and they just disappear. When I search for them it says it can't find the file?
I am running Windows Vista home edition and when I receive my email using Windows Mail, it says it is receiving the email ok but then it all disappears. There are no messages in the inbox or any other folder. I tested that my email is getting to my mailbox on my ISP'S server by using their webmail. I have had people send me test messages and they all show up in the mailbox. After I start up Windows mail and it says it is receiving "n" messages and then they disappear, I logged back onto my webmail and all the mail is gone so I know it is being sent to my PC.
Can anyone help with this problem? I have no idea where the messages are going to, they just seem to disappear. I hav uninstalled the antivirus program that I had because I thought maybe it had something to do with it but that did not do any good. I have no other firewalls or anything running on the PC outside of what comes with Vista.
I installed SP1 and all of a sudden when my machine wakes from sleep - my SATA drive disappears. Why is this?
I have enabld AHCI in BIOS and it worked great I did NOT install Intel's Matrix driver I have an Intel DP35DP Mother board I have Vista Ultimate I have an IDE drive as my primary/boot drive
I have two SATA drives. One is a SATA/300 and has no issues (so far). The one with issues is a Maxtor 250GB SATA/150 drive. IT DID not have any issue before SP!.
I'm having problems downloading anything. When I download something, whether I'm in Firefox or IE, the file downloads normally until it is complete. In IE the download window immediately disappears, and in Firefox the download "cannot be found". The file pretty much just completely disappears when it is finished downloading. I've searched for the files I download and found nothing. I've tried downloading to different locations also to no avail.
A friend has a new Toshiba laptop with Windows Vista. When she double clicks on the Internet Explorer icon (on the desktop), IE will open up for 2 seconds then disappear. In it's place are three small identical windows, with the message "Internet Explorer cannot display the web page", and also a small google search line. I'm not familiar with Vista or the IE that comes with it. So this may be normal behavior, but in my world (Win2000 and XP) you can always open up Internet Explorer even if it doesn't connect to the web. Can someone tell me if there is a way to open up IE so that it doesn't disappear as I described.
When either right clicking or dragging icons on my desktop every icon disappears along with all toolbars and just left with desktop wallpaper, the only option is to re-boot. I believe it may be a problem with Windows Explorer.
On ocassion a message will disappear from my inbox. This has happen before my eyes. I recall reading on this forum a possible conflict with AVG free?? I have checked my settings with the phishing on and junk set to low. AVG is set to scan both in and outgoing mail. This has always happen with a message I want to keep in a folder and never with run of the mill stuff.
When I have a couple of programs open and need to get back to the Desktop to see something I've noticed that the SideBar containing the Gadgets disappears when I use the SHOW DESKTOP BUTTON in the Taskbar. If I minimize the windows, the SideBar of course is still visible, it's only upon using the Show Desktop Button that the Gadgets disappear. Is this normail or have I got a setting wrong?
I dont think this problem has been posted before. i used to have the same problem with IE7 on XP so i moved to firefox but now if i use firefox on Vista 64, (my current OS) any downloads i do go missing (this seems to be a common problem with no solution). aside from that annoyance i now find that whilst i am browsing using IE7 it all of a sudden decides to disappear. i cant even bloody decribe it. imagine you have 3-4 tabs open in 1 window and whilst your checking something on a website IE7 just decides to close. when you open it you have to load everything again. does anyone know how to get rid of this bug because its happening at least once a day! i only chose Vista 64 due to wanting directx 10 and more then 4gb recognition now im thinking twice, hass it been worth it?!
All of a sudden some programs start and go away, some others won't even start. As an example: I start "Gspot v2.70a", it starts and the progress bar starts moving to the end; and then Gspot closes. Some others programs will not even start, I've uninstalled them all and reinstalled them. I click on the shortcut that the install-program put on the desktop, nothing! I click on the *.exe itself, nothing. I start it as an administrator....same thing, nothing. They do NOT appear in Taskmanager. Anybody able to solve this mistery?
I am new to this forum. This is my first post. Anyways, I have a dvd drive (Hitachi that is detected in the bios and sometimes by windows vista home premium) This is stock on my laptop, both the operating system and the dvd drive. I have not ever added another os or did a factory restore. I contacted my laptops brand (gateway) and they told me a factory restore was needed before sending this machine back. Things I have tried...
- System restore to an earlier point in time (don't have any to that point) - Deleting upper and lower bounds in the registry - uninstalling the driver for the dvd drive, but it detects and installs it upon reboot........
It disappears randomly whether i am burning something or just looking at a disk. The only way i can get it temporarily back is by Microsoft's fix it tool. However, it disappears randomly other times. Now my question is this. instead of doing a factory restore, can i just put an external hard drive in and install vista os on the portable usb hard drive. Once installed, can i copy my registry keys from one os to another? If so, does anyone know where i could find these and which keys they are? That way, i wont lose my settings and programs. if i need to install a few programs because i need to delete a few things, so be it. I just don't want to lose everything.
While browsing files and folders I've noticed something extreemly annoying. You can see the size of individual files in the Size column but you cant see the folder's contents size. This extreemly frustrating and I cant seem to find where I can enable that function. I know you can scroll your mouse over folders one at a time and a window will apear and you can see the size then, but thats just inconveniant for what Im doing. I need to be able to glance at multiple folder sizes constantly.
Every time I open Word the default printer has "disappeared". I get an error message saying the printer has not responded and asking whether I want to wait. This makes printing very, very difficult. Does anyone have a solution. I am using Vista Home edition, Office 2003 and the printer is an Epson D78. I have installed the new driver for the D78 and Vista. I have uninstalled and re-installed Word and the printer, but all to no avail
I have Vista Home Premium and Office 2007 Ultimate. Recently, I've noticed that when I go to save a downloaded program, it goes through the motions, then disappears. Also, when I go to save a document in Office 2007, it also goes through the motions, then disappears. Does anyone know how to fix this issue? I save a lot of documents in my profession, so I can't afford to not be able to.
