Filesharing: Cannot Read And Modify
Mar 28, 2009
I share the folder, in permissions I make \"everyone = full control\" and then in security tab I add \"guest = full control\" and \"everyone = full control\". Now any computer on the network can browse to any other computer on the network and read / modify the files. The problem is that if I copy anything INTO the share or say download something directly into the share it is unable to be read. I need to right click on the individual file and mod the security settings to add
guest and everyone...............

I have 2 HDDs in my comp, 1 is 80GB and the other is 300GB. After my Vista crashed I tried to do a dual boot of XP and Vista so I partitioned my 80 GB drive to 65GB and 15GB. I installed XP on the 15GB partition which was given the drive letter "E:". After configuring XP I installed Vista on "C:". The first thing I noticed was that is said one of my partitions on the 2nd 300GB HDD was titled "Unallocated Space" which is not true as I had filled it's 175GB up to the brim with data. Anyways I tried to make a new partition out of it and it gave me an error code "0x8004240f" but it didn't do anything to the partition (the letter "F:" was given to it by XP). So after installing Vista on "C:" I went back to XP to check and the drive was fine and so was all the data. I cannot touch the drive on Vista. I cannot modify the MBR on vista either to correct the problem.

i can't modify my power settings. When i try to change my power plan settings it says that my power plan info isnt available. I then go to the FAQ part and it says "If your computer is part of a network at an organization—such as a school, government agency, or business—your organization's system administrator might have made certain settings unavailable or even removed them by using Group Policy. Group Policy is a feature of Windows that lets system administrators manage users' access to Windows features. If you think that Group Policy is preventing you from changing a setting that you need to access, contact your system administrator."
I have NO idea what this means.. this is my personal computer and is not part of any newtworks. I then tried to change my account type to "standard user" so i could fix the problem, but my computer won't let me. I even created a new user account and made that one a standard user but it didn't fix the probelm. How do i gain access to my power plan so i can modify it?

I just uploaded pictures from my digital camera to the computer and now it wont let me modify them. I am panicing! It deleted them off my camera and now I can't upload them anywhere or even modify them. I'm losing my son's memories. This is the only time I didn't "Name" them when uploading because it said it was optional. Any other Windows I have had would just automaticly name them for me and no problem. Now I can't modify and save. It tells me: Changes to this picture have not been saved. The file may be read-only or you might not have permission to save to the pictures location. They are not read only. I went into the properties and checked. This is so horrible. I have never had to deal with this. I even took a mock picture and named it when I imported it and I can do what ever I want to that picture including save modifications.

I can't modify any files or folders anywhere on my computer. For example, if I create a new folder on my desktop, when I try to rename it the name still stays at 'New Folder' which I can't get rid of. Also I can't encrypt any files or folders. I am the administrator of the computer and there is no other users. I have tried taking full control of the files/folders on the security tab on properties and also using software like 'Unlocker' but nothing seems to work.

Just like in Windows ME, when I go to the shutdown menu, I get a default option of "Sleep". That's probably the very last thing I'd ever want to do, but usually when I go there I want to "Restart". I use a desktop shortcut for a complete system shut down. How can I change that default, from "Sleep" to "Restart". I know, I know, this is NOT a critical problem, but so far I'm having little or few problems with Vista, that I can't figure out. So far, I've got it running almost as good as XP.

Using WinXP, you could go to File Types tab and modify them manually. The tab is missing in Vista. Problem: In XP, I had my sound recorder associated with my .wav files. I modified the properties of the file extension so it would open, play the sound, the close. In Vista, I can't seem to be able to edit the Open or the Play aspect. How can I do this in Vista. Please don't ask me why...we all have our own personal reasons for doing what we do...I just want to be able to do it in Vista...if it's possible.

I recently bought a laptop with VISTA. My software will not run on it. I have contacted the seller of the software and they do not plan to modify their software to run on any platform except XP. I did buy XP and install it on the laptop. My program does run, but many of the basic PC functions do not run properly. even the mouse pad and keyboard acts very erratic. It is driving me crazy! I am ready to give up and buy a different laptop. When I look for one via Google, all I get are ones that run VISTA or 7. I would be willing to even buy a used PC. I need a reputable source. I need around 2GHZ and 3MB. All the basic functions PLUS XP. I am not a gamer.

Everytime I boot up my system my security suite says that an application has changed that application is "WmiPrvSE.exe" and is located in "C:WindowsSysWOW64wbem". I also get another warning stating that an application is attempting to modify my system, which is potentially dangerous, that application is "WmiApSrv.exe" and is located in "C:WindowsSystem32wbem". Is this something that I need to be concerned about? I recently re-installed Vista so there really shouldn't be anything malicious on my system. If it is something I need to take car of how do I go about that?

I have a lot of misc. cds that a friend who passed away made. They are pics & music mostly. Some slide shows too but I can't get them to open anywhere.
I told his wife I'd go through them but impossible if my computer won't read them. I believe most of them were made on XP and I have Vista. Called Gateway but they didn't know. I tried a couple on an HP with XP and they all were read. Does anyone know if this is a Vista problem or is it my computer?
My warranty is up in May so I'm hoping if it's the computer I'll have time to get it fixed under warranty.

Another Vista Ultimate 32bit weird prob I have. Whenever I insert any disc be it CD/DVD, and I double-click on the DVD icon to open it, I keep getting "Prepare this disc" option to Live format the disc. The disc could be anything a closed session disc, a manufacturer disc, I keep getting this prob. So only two ways to go ahead.
1. I've DOpus - Directory Opus, an alternative to Windows Explorer in which I can Sometimes view the disc, though not always
2. The best way I've figured out is for me to simply click "Next" and wait for Windows to tell me that it cannot format my disc and then I can access the contents.
3. Auto-run registry fix doesnt cure it. (updated after flavirus replied)
Any Ideas why this is happening? I uninstalled the drivers of my drives, I've two, Sony DVD-writer SATA and Lite-on DVD-writer IDE. In WinXP I didn't have this prob with these drives, so i know this is a software issue.

I have an emachine w3619 with dual core 2160 intel, 1.5 gig ram and windows vista 32 bit home premium. Recently my cd/dvd drive stopped reading cds. When i went into device manager it said the device was functioning properly and the drivers were up to date. I uninstalled the cd/dvd rom drive and restarted that did not fix the problem either. I deleted the upper and lower filters through regedit as some people had mentioned this did not fix the problem for me. My cd/dvd rom shows up in "computer" but always acts as if the drive is empty. Anyone else had the same problem?

I have been using an SD card in my laptop for portable storage for ~6 months. Suddenly, I have started getting an error message saying that "Disk is write protected." The tab on the SD card is in the unlock position. I have tried using the properties window to change it but their is no option to change it from Read Only or Change Permissions. If I click on a folder on the SD card and try to change it via the Properties Windows the window says that it is "Read Only" but when I uncheck "Read Only," it says I can't
because the disk is Read Only. And again I can't find any option to change
ownership or permissions.

I have copied all my internet favourites folders in from Windows XP (IE7). I didn't use a password in XP and still don't in Vista.
Now, I can't organise or add-to any of the folders in Vista. It says they are read-only.
When I display the properties of the folders, they have a green square (mixed content) in the read-only tick-box. I switch it off and accept the prompt which says that it will apply to files and sub-folders.
But when I go to use them they are still read-only, and when I look at their properties, they are unchanged - still flagged with mixed content. And I still can't organise or add to them.

This morning I was able to access my SD card for my camera with no problem. But then all of a sudden I went to download some pictures that I had taken afterwards and the computer doesn't recognize the card. When I unplug it from the reader it does the ejection sound but when I plug it in it gives an error sound (three small low grade beeps). I put the SD back in my camera and the pictures are still there. Why is Vista not recognizing the card all of a sudden?

My company has an Excel application we have developed and we use an Installer program to distribute it. The installer default is to install the program into a Program File that is named. This works flawlessly on xp but on any computer that has Vista installed, the file opens in Read Only, which defeats our entire application. The read only format can not be changed in any of the obvious ways (under Properties etc). This is a huge problem for us. Is there any way around it?

I'm messing around with this motherboard my dad had RMA'd to see if I can turn it into a usuable computer. Works fine but the one thing that's got me perplexed is the DVD drives plugged into it. The DVD writer seems to "read when it wants to", which is really weird. A lot of the time, it just won't read anything but sometimes it does read discs (I even burnt a disc using it). The drive is there in Windows Explorer and the BIOS also catches it but I can't get it to boot from the DVD drive (but it DID boot once so I managed to install Windows from it). In Windows I put discs in and it makes no attempt to read them...unless it suddenly WANTS to read them and then does. Does this make any sense? A drive almost literally reading discs when it feels like it wants to read them.

I am running Windows XP media center edition and have just bought an upgrade DVD to Vista. I have 2 DVD players on my machine but neither of them run the DVD. The only file that appears visible is a readme file and that says "This disc contains a "UDF" file system and requires an operating system that supports the ISO-13346 "UDF" file system specification."
When I boot from the DVD drive with the Vista DVD in it it starts the installation but the product key I have only allows for an upgrade and tells me I have to launch it from my current operating system. I am tearing my hair out at this stage.

If i put any memory device in, it says i must format the disk before i can use it...but I have alot of information on them and its pointless to delete information that i want to see. If i click on the properties of the disk it says i have 0% unused information. I turned auto play off and even uninstalled ROXIO. With ROXIO deleted, the cd drive now says i must insert a disk but there is already one in there. The other drives still say the same as they did before ROXIO was deleted. This problem started off as the cd drive only messing up sometimes. Then it stopped working completely. Within a few weeks i couldnt use any of the drives. Ive tried many diagnostic tests and no luck.

I’m currently having issues with transferring from a USB HD. I have 70GB of video files across 10 seasons/folders on my usb hd. I’m able to copy all but about 8 files. The files are 350MB each. They all have the same format in the naming structure “[1x18] Episode Name”. I’ve tried copying them using XP (I get a cyclic redundancy check error), Vista Business and Vista Ultimate. I’ve tried copying them to a NAS, another HD, and My internal HD. I’ve tried opening as going save as, but always get the “cannot read from disk”. I can play the files with no problems. I’ve also defrag’d the drive. I’ve tried copy/cut. I’m also able to cut within the USB HD but not copy.
