Defender Explorer Show Down Startup
Aug 18, 2008My Gateway ML3109 runs lean and clean with only Office 2003 and no startup programs listed in Defender Explorer. Recently it has begun to slow down signifcantly on startup. I found errors logging in the Diagnostic-Performance>Operational Event Log, usually with a Critical 100 Event about startup degradation, accompanied by multiple Errors about indiviual apps/drivers taking longer to complete resulting in performance degradation in system start-up process. Most recent are Event 105 "Foreground optimizations (prefetching) took longer to complete, resulting in a performance degradation in the system start up process," Events 102 "This driver took longer to initialize, resulting in a performance degradation in the system start up process": HdAudAddService, PptpMinport, Ndistapi, NdisWan, AgereSoftModem; Events 101 "This application took longer than ususal to start up...": LogonUIxe, mmc.exe, svchost.exe, etc. Each time it seems to be different services, drivers and applications which are delayed and they individually troubleshoot ok. I was advised by Gateway to do a clean reinstall which I have done twice with no change in the situtation, leading me to believe it might be a setting in the Boot or BIOS which is incorrect. It is the same with or without my Avast antivirus.

Mar 23, 2008I am the only user on my laptop. I accepted the Toshiba settings when I bought the machine, but I realise that there are a number of features that are disabled that (as an administrator) I should be able to use. for example:
1. Windows Defender will show me the details of start-up programs but not allow me to remove/enable/disable anything (the buttons are greyed-out/disabled).
2. There are some folders (e.g. in my internet favourites) which are read-only and when I switch read-only off, it ignores what I've done - they remain read-only.
Explorer Indicate RED Cross On Drives
Mar 23, 2008I have Vista basic SP1 v.668 which mount on a laptop XP SP3 v.3264 two drive. The user name for the mount is the same user name I login to vista but witH Different password. After the XP returns from standby and I try the same Word 2007 file in the XP I get an error. Explorer indicate RED cross on the drives. When double-click I'm prompt to enter user name/password ( without the option to save password )

Defender Disabling, Turn Off The Defender
Apr 21, 2009I have to install AVG and they mention that Defender should be disabled. I have Vista Premium and when I searched the Internet for instructions on how to turn off the Defender, I am told to go to Defender and click on Tools and then Options and then go to: Administrator options. Deselect the Use Windows Defender box and press the Save button. My Options does not have Administrator Options at bottom (nor Use Windows Defender box). My Options has two categories: Automatic scanning AND Default actions.
1- Why don't I see/have "Administrator Options?
2- And, how can I disable Defender prior to installing AVG?
Windows Defender Spyware: Open Internet Explorer, The Windows Defender Pops Up And Says That My IE Is Infected?
Feb 11, 2010The computer has worked fine since then, I've used the internet at wi-fi hotspots around my city, with never a single problem...until last night. While I was on-line at home, I was checking a website that I have always checked before without issue when my Windows Defender suddenly popped open and said that my computer was under threat and blocked Internet Explorer from me and started running a diagnosic. Well apparently it said that I had like 26 infections in my computer. That I had worms, spyware, adware, that someone was watching my key logs, etc, etc, and it gave me the option to click on the remove all. So I clicked on it, but instead of doing anything, another message box appeared saying that my Windows Defender is not the full version and that I must either purchase the full version or enter my key code for it. I don't have a key code since I never bought this program, was pre-installed.
Anyways, now whenever I try to open Internet Explorer, the Windows Defender pops up and says that my IE is infected and asks if I would like to purchase the full Windows Defender. I have clicked on both options. If I say "no", the computer blocks my IE, if I say yes, it opens my IE, but instead of taking me to a Windows website, it takes me to www.antivirus-care.com, which my browser says does not exist and instead takes me to another page with a listing of anti-virus program sites to buy from. Well, all this seems fishy to me because I can't do anything with the Windows Defender program. I can't turn it off, I can't change its settings, or even look at other options it has. Instead whenever I try the message window of "would I like to buy the full version now?" appears and keeps appearing.

Im trying to help a friend fix their sound on their HP Compaq Presario F500 (2EA)Laptop. They have the annoying red cross over the audio icon on the bottom right hand corner of the screen (No Volume Mixer).
I have tried numerous things like:-
- Completely uninstalled the (Conexant High Definition) drivers in device manager, restarted and let Vista install them again.
- Downloaded latest drivers from RealTek,, and also HP
- Unfortunately their are no system restore points before the problem happened.
I have a sneaking suspision that either Windows Update installed something that is clashing with this problem or I herd that Itunes may have somethign to do with it (Which was installed near the time).
Computer Keeps Restarting
Sep 24, 2009First off, let me just say I'm pretty much a total dunce when it comes to computers. So, anyway I just got a new hard drive because my old one died and it seems I already have problems. I had similar problems with the old one (kept restarting itself) until eventually it got to the point I couldn't start or even repair/reinstall Windows because there were no drivers. However this time I don't get the BSOD when it happens, at least visibly (in the error report it tells me the Problem Event Name is BlueScreen).
This is the second or third time (one of the times could have been because of a power outage) it's happened since I got my new hard drive on the 16th. The screen turns black for a few seconds and then it restarts. With my last hard drive it would give the BSOD after the black screen, but not with this one. I just don't know what to do, I thought my problem was with my hard drive the last time which is why I bought a new one and it seems to have helped, but now I'm thinking there might have been problems elsewhere too........
Computer Restarting
Jun 11, 2008Im a little lost on where i go next with this issue. I got a computer about 1.5 years ago now with Vista Premium on it. Everything was great up until a few months ago. My computer started restarting randomly. I thought it might be a virus so i did the normal scaning and found nothing, just to be safe i reformatted it with a clean windows install. But its still happening. I didnt change any hardware, its in a properly ventilated area, and nothing in perticular seems to trigger it. Sometimes it can go 2 days without restarting once, some times it can do it twice in half an hour. I dont get a blue screen and i havnt been able to find anything in the event logs.

Oct 16, 2009I have a multi boot system with XP, Vista, 7 (RC1) and Ubuntu. If I select "restart" in order to reboot, it just waits until I do a hard reset. If I select shutdown, then it does so. Neither XP or 7 has this problem. Any fix for this?

Oct 13, 2009I am working on my mothers computer. She has a dell inspiron 1525 running windows vista basic.
She is having a huge problem. Whenever she starts her computer, it starts up normally, and goes all the way to the log in screen. You can log in and everything seems fine. It takes about 30 seconds from the time that it shows the accounts to choose from until it automatically restarts. I let the battery completely drain and am recharging it. It is still auto restarting. Her AV was up to date and no problems there.
Date And Time Changes After Restarting.
Dec 9, 2009I'm having a problem with Vista 64, I've verified the date and time in the bios (new motherboard) what happens is the date and time change to Dec 2016 after the PC restarts and the desktop is ready for action. I've scanned for viruses and malware and none were found, this is a new install from scratch.
Also I have a "Interactive Services Detection" error that forced me to disable the service, does anybody know how to fix it instead of disabling the service? I could just do another re-install but I'd like to avoid that right now.
Shuting Down And Restarting After Update
Apr 21, 2009i use vista ultimate. I checked for new updates then installed them. My machine keeps shutting down and restarting. I see on the screen "configuring updates, do not power off, 3 of 3 updates 99% completed". this keep going on and on. I power off after 24 hours then thy to restore my machine using the installation dvd, but my machine does not seem to boot from the dvd. It says reboot and select the boot device or instert the dvd and hit a key... things like this. Anytime i hit the key nothing happens. I dont wana loose my files.

Nov 10, 2009One of my Intel Core 2 Quad processor cores has a temperature consistently lower than the other 3 cores, WHY? I have a question. I need to know the reason why one of my cores (Core 2) is running about 3-4 degrees below the temperatures of the other 3 cores on my Intel Core 2 Quad processor. Restarting and rebooting seems not to help, it is always the same core with the lower temperature. Is there something wrong with that particular core or something overly defective with the processor itself??? It rarely ever fluctuates and stays at 33 degrees Celsius. The other core temperatures are around 36-37 degrees at rest/idle and do frequently go up when an action is performed on the computer.
Please let me know what is going on with this consistent core 2 temperature and please provide me with a reason why this is happening. Is it something that is beginning to go with this processor? Is there anything that can be done about it to get all four (4) core temperatures in balance.

It will restart at idle, if I'm in a word doc, or on the web. It will seem to freeze for two seconds, then go black and restart.I have disabled the automatic restart to hopefully see a bsod error code, but even with the automatic restart disabled the system does not display a bsod error and still restarts.The minidump folder is empty and the event viewer simply states that an unexpected shut down occurred.My graphic card's avg. temp is 50c and the cpu 46c. I've ran SiSoftware Sandra stability test close to 48 hours with no errors or restarts, then the next day at idle...restart Bios and drivers are current...I am stumped!

Jun 24, 2009i recently bought a new computer, its running Vista (64 bit) Home Premium, and when i first got it i attempted to do an "Easy Transfer" from my old laptop to this new desktop (the laptop was running Vista Home Premium ((32 bit i believe)), not sure if this may have anything to do with the problem)... but anyway, after the Easy Transfer was done, after shutting off my pc and restarting it, upon the windows startup screen the message "incorrect password" pops up first thing before i even try to type in any password o.O ... my pc is secured with a password and if i click ok and then type in the password it works fine, but at start up now every single time the first thing i see is "incorrect password" regardless of the fact that i havnt tried typing in the password yet, and like i said, if i just click ok and type in the password it works fine, so this problem hasnt really been bothering me that much, but i do find it quite odd and was wondering if anyone knew what this could be caused from (its the least of my problems with Vista 64 bit so far btw -_-) .... but yea, ive never seen a vista system show the "incorrect password" message before you even attempt to type the password in at startup haha...

Feb 2, 2010i saw a video of someone i subscribed to on Internet, and he posted a video about a 'god mode' folder, and it was real, except he forgot to put '32 bit only'.., so what it was was you had to made a new empty folder on your desktop, and rename it something like 'godmode.{j74h37858g83e453e4g74c}' but right after i did, the folder disappeared, and windows explorer kept restarting about every 5-10 seconds, and i was just lucky i had another user on this computer which does still work. but i really need that first account back (it was the administrator account). so yeah, any thoughts on this would be helpful. *also, i forgot to note that safe mode doesn't work either; the screen just keeps flashing black every 5-10 seconds, which is obviously still the windows explorer.
