Best Backup (to DVD Or Ext. HD) Software?
Aug 23, 2008
Since I didn't go with Vista 64-bit Ultimate, I'm just wondering what the best software is out there to backup an image of my PC to DVD or hard disc is? I would like to have a nice backup of Vista that I can easily use instead of reinstalling Vista every time. What is the best software out there to do this?

I did a complete PC backup of my system onto an external USB HDD using the backup facility in VISTA Ultimate. When I went to do a complete PC restore I am told form the Help info on VISTA Ultimate to restart my computer, push F8 and choose the 'repair' option to run the restore. WHen I do this I get the safe mode options, debugging mode etc etc but there is no 'repair' mode. How do I get to the repair mode??

I have a 720GB internal drive that I've maxed out with automated weekly backups. I have another drive with a lot of space, and my question is, can Vista backup be set to continue the existing backup onto an additional drive. In other words, the backup files would be spread over two drives?

I always use vista complete backup (Disk Image) to backup both my hard disks, but I am a bit confused as to the restore options. Basically, I have a sneaky suspition that one of the drives is going to fail in the near future, so I backup quite regularly, but when I replace it, I want to get a bigger drive, as it's only a 150gig raptor, and I really would prefer a 500 or 1TB 7200rpm drive for storage.
Can vista restore the files I backed up on D: (the 150gig) to a new D: which would be a large disk ? If it can, could I also do the same for C: which is where vista is located? If that doesn't work,

I've moved from Outlook Express on my XP desktop to Windows mail on my Vista laptop. I plan on moving to Outlook on both computers, but not until I get this folder thing straightened out. I was able to import my OE mail into Windows Mail ok. Then I had a hard drive failure on my laptop. I had backed up my mail files and I was able to restore my Windows Mail ok.
I had several "Recovered Folders", but they included everything. I moved all of my folders out of the recovered folders and placed them once more under the Inbox. Then I deleted the empty recovered folders.
Now I want to backup my mail, not using the Vista backup, but with a third party. So when I go into my Windows Mail folder in Windows Explorer, I find all of the "recovered folders" are still there. Now they're listed as Local Folders. I can't find the configuration of my folders as I see them in Windows mail at all. I have a "Backup" folder with a "new" folder inside of it with a windows file that is unopenable.

external hard drive. I have an internal drive with Windows. 750GB. And a 1TB
internal drive with several partitions in it. I did a custom install. Could
someone who is familiar with backups please walk me through making a boot
disc, and explain how to back up to me.

I save entire disk images to a second internal hard drive that is partitioned just for backing up entire images of my primary hard drive.
Windows analyzed and suggests defragging but should I defrag the backups? The suggestion to defrag is not for my primary hard drive.

I'm concerned my system may crash and I have no back up and recovery disk or Vista installation disk. I was told I could order one from the manufacturer but I'm wondering if there is a way to create one after setup. I have a XP Home Edition I suppose I could use but I would rather create a Vista backup, if possible.

I kept on getting a bootmgr message so I just reverted back to Vista Home premium 64-bit and I only have 191 GB free of 580 GB. I believe most of it is in the backup in C drive but I can't delete any of it. Its keep saying "This folder is shared with other people. If you delete this folder, it will no longer be shared. Continue" and when I click continue it says the same thing. Then when I click continue again it says "destination folder access denied. You need permission to perform this action". How do I delete it?

I use an external hard drive for backups, and I back up once a week. One of the old backups allows the restoration of a document that I want permanently deleted from my system. I wanted to delete the backup for that date to eliminate that possibility, and I deleted the backup's folder in the external hard drive (disk F, but Vista's "Backup and Restore Center" still allows the backup for that date and the restoration of the file I want permanently deleted. I can't find the backup's folder in Windows.
How can I delete the old backup from Vista's "Backup and Restore Center"? If that's not possible, how can I prevent the restoration of the file I want permanently deleted?

I have a dual boot system with W7 on a second HDD. I am trying to make a full PC Backup without backing up my W7 disk (because it fails the backup). The second HDD is checked in the backup settings screen, but greyed out, so I cannot uncheck it. It is not checked for file backup.
How do I exclude this disk from the Full PC Backup?

Now that I have downloaded Paragon Backup and completed backup to My Books external hard drive I am stuck on stupid again.
When going to My Books EH and clicking on a specific file, in fact all files, it goes to Windows Cannot open this file and gives me two choices to use the web to find program to open or use a program listed on my computer to find the correct program to open it.
What is your recommendation?
I have previously down a backup from Vista Home Premium tp My Books EH and don't have any problem opening and viewing these back up files.

Currently I backup my entire C directory and the D recovery to a Clickfree 320g external drive. Is this the best approach? I am assuming that in taking that approach the OS is also backed up and given the worst case that I must reinstall the OS I can get back to pre-event status given it's all backed up. Anyway what is the best approach to" Back-up"?

I currently have an Asus M50SA laptop running Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit. Recently my hard drive was failing and had to get it repaired. So I used the Windows Back up utility and backed up the entire hard drive to an external 3.5 inch usb hard drive. I then sent my laptop off to get repaired and they took out the hard drive and put a new one in and re-installed Vista for me. However, when I went to run the recovery program from the install disk, it kept coming up with the error that it could not find any backups. Using the command prompt though, I could connect to my USB drive and see the image. What do I need to do to get the recovery software to see the VHD file on the USB drive?

Judging from the the explanations & helpfiles for file backup, a standard user should be able to call up the backup and restore center, click on "back up files" and then be prompted (by UAC?) for administrative rights. Is that correct?
However, when I try this, I get an error message that states "You need to be an administrator to run backup" - and requires me to use fast user switching or log-off / log-on as administrator to run the backup. Am I doing sth wrong that I get this message & have to go through the extra step of switching log-ons?

I'm trying to install under Vista Ultimate x64 one of those on-the-fly backup programs (Western Digital Backup Anwhere, or R4Yware Clonedir2), but they just won't run... I suspect this has sth to do with the .NET; I googled and saw a mention somewhere that under x64 systems, they require .NET 3.5. So I downloaded and installed. Net 3.5 - to no avail... In the Vista components, .NET 3.0 is still listed (while in the Program List in Control Panel, only the new 3.5 version is present). I don't think my installation actually changed anything in the system.

I have an HP 7763w PC, which came with Vista. It has that vertical bay in the tower front for a backup (or portable?) drive, that can be popped in and out easily. I really would like to have XP on my machine again, but am a little concerned about changing the main HD, or making a partition on it, fearing unforeseen problems. Can I install it on the BU drive? Or what would be a good way to be able to boot into either OS at my choice?

I am trying to figure out what to do when my backup location can no longer accept new backups because it is full. I tried to do a search but the "full" just brings up references to the Full Backup you can do with Windows Vista Ultimate. Any one know where I could find out best practices for doing backups. For example, do I reformat the drive my backup is on so I can do another backup? Or do I buy a bigger drive, and continue doing this as the months go by? Do I swap for another drive to continue doing my backups, and just keep buying more drives as they get filled? Do I hope that Moore's Law also applies to hard drive storage?

Ever since I received my new (refurbished) laptop, I have had the message of "insufficient storage available. cannot backup files." Further, my computer has always run slower than any other computer I have used. I get the message "low disc space..running out of disc space" often. (Dell has been no help whatsoever, and at this point, I am out of warranty.)
To try to resolve my problem I have compressed the drive 'to save space' which gave me 231 mb of space. Certainly not enough to run any backups. I have defragmented and get the message that it does not have to be defragmented at this time.................

I performed the complete PC backup but I don't know if it worked and if it did, what discs are valid. It was a confusing process. I have 36 GB to backup and it said it should take 3-5 DVD discs. When I inserted the first disc it said to label it, including the date and time of the backup followed by "1". It did the same thing four times, and each time the progress bar started from the beginning. After the fourth disk, it finally went through verifying the disc and the progress bar went further. It told me to label backup was complete. The last two discs are readable but the other three are not. Did the system back up all 36 GB on two DVDs? If there were errors writing to some discs then it should tell me that the discs are not part of the backup set.

I had to update my External Verbatim E drive as it was Full Disc. I now use WD Elements but i reformatted it to use on my Backup an Restore Auto BU. It backs up half my files then stops with this error message 0X81000014. Which says i don't have enough E drive disk space. Which is incorrect as i have 229 free of 298 GB on External E Drive. Also i had this error code 0X8007005>> Denied Access which i fixed. I tried several times same error message 0X8100014 pops up? I have never had this problem before with Verbatim.
