Modem Running At Dialup Speed

Apr 3, 2008

I have the following: gigabit wired desktop w/Vista premium and 360, 100mb old desktop with xp, laptop w/ xp and laptop w/Vista basic, also using a wga310n linksys wireless/gigabit router. All is fine w/ everything but Vista laptop. The xp laptop is connecting to the router using wireless-g at adequate speed. The Vista laptop, however, connects to the network just fine with wireless-g, but it runs verrrry slow. Ran a speedtest on laptops and xp one is in broadband range, but the Vista one is only in dialup range.

Maximum Port Speed For Standard Modem, Increase

Mar 23, 2008

I'm using 3g phone to connect to the internet. Using standard modem over Bluetooth link as a driver, the speed is not as expected since the maximum speed that can be setup in driver properties is 115.2 kbs while the speed offered by 3g network is 384 kbs. So, I hope Microsoft can resolve this problem.

Dialup Failure To Connect

Mar 23, 2008

Like many on this forum, for several months I experienced random connection failures and/or loss of connection while browsing. (This did not happen on the two betas but only after upgrading from Beta 2 to VHP). Tried all the obvious things but nothing helped. Finally did what I should have done in the first place....went to the MS Knowledge Base and found two articles that seemed to apply (KB 936213 and 936214). These articles concern IE optimizing, resetting, and troubleshooting compatibility problems, and consist of many involved methods and steps. I ran through all the methods and steps, and nothing seemed to change. However, when I rebooted, a popup appeared stating that "Windows has blocked some startup programs" and

inviting me to click to see list of blocked programs. The list shows 7 MS programs and Avast Antivirus.(If anyone is interested, I can give you the list of programs). All show classification of "Permitted" The results: My dialup connection has worked flawlessly with no connection failures or disconnects for over two weeks. An added bonus: The popup asking "Do you want to disconnect" when closing IE is back (it had disappeared on VHP installation). Don't know exactly what I did, since I did not choose to disable any startup programs when going through the KB steps. Only know that it worked and there seems to be no other problems.

Windows Mail Insists On Trying To Do Dialup

Mar 28, 2008

I have configured e-mail in Windows versions going back to Windows for Workgroups, for a Palm III, for Linux installs. I've never had trouble like this. I am trying to set up POP3 with ATT. I have all the settings, taken off the excellently functioning XP box practically beside my new Vista-runing PC. I have doublechecked those settings at ATT's help page.

From my very first few minutes with Windows Mail, it has insisted on trying to connect through dial-up. In the connection pop-up, no service shows to select. (In earlier attempts, I got an error message complaining about no service selected). In the configuration settings, I have checked for Windows Mail to automatically find my Internet connection; to never dial up. Nevertheless, it tries to dial up, every (expletive omitted) time. Or else it just sits there and does nothing.

I am running AVG Antivirus Free with e-mail scanning turned off. I have given Windows Mail an exception in Windows Firewall, which is the only firewall running. Perversely enough, when I first fired this new PC up, it went online at the first opportunity and registered Vista (which was fine). Strangely, the new box works with other PC's on the LAN (designated private, oddly, so other PC's can find it). But what's a real kick in the pants is that I accessed newsgroups, including this one, with a single, no-hassle click........

Dialup Dialog Prevents Sending Email

Mar 23, 2008

I have a broadband connection but when I try to send a message (I am receiving with no trouble) it goes to the Outbox. When I press SEND, a dialup connection dialog box opens and tries to find a dialup connection. I have tried some fixes, such as Tools/Accounts/Connection/Properties, and the Never Dial a Connection radio box is marked but all is greyed out, so I cannot apply it. Also, if I try to open anything else from the Properties box, such as General or Advanced, the procedure goes grey and I get a "Not responding" message.

Memory Speed: Can't Stop Wondering If The Difference In Speed WOULD Matter

Apr 13, 2008

I just bought a new pc with Vista Home Premium, it came with: 1GB PC2-6400 DDR2 SDRAM, expandable to 4GB. I wanted more memory so I bought a 2GB kit PC2-*5300* DDR2 SDRAM, because it was on sale for $60. The 6400 speed would have cost me over $200. The salesman assured me it would work fine and I wouldn't notice any difference. I installed it when I got home and everything works great, no problems. But I still can't stop wondering if the difference in speed WOULD matter. Can anyone explain, or provide a link explaining, when, if ever, I would benefit from the faster memory. I mostly use my PC for surfing the web, email, and some photo editing.

Slow Internet Speed:speed Goes Down To 300 Kbps

Sep 5, 2008

I have Vista x64 Ultimate and I'm having internet connection issues. My laptop is the HP Pavillion dv7. My ISP tells me everything is fine on his end. I have a router (Linksys model BEFW11S4) 2.4 Ghz - 802.11b. When I connect the wire from my modem directly to my laptop, I get internet speeds of 900 Kbps. But when I use the router, the speed goes down to 300 Kbps. Is there a setting in Vista that could be doing this? According to Linksys, I should be able to attain 900 Kbps with the router. The laptop comes with a wireless adapter (Intel Wi-Fi Link 5100AGN).

Computer With Vista That Had No Modem

Mar 23, 2008

I bought a computer with Vista that had no modem. I installed my old modem - vista didn't like that - BSOD on shutdown. Uninstalled that, bought new modem listed as Vista compatible, is in Device Manager as Agere Systems PCI SV92PP soft modem. It is listed as operating correctly. Today I downloaded from Windows Update an optional update which was a later driver, from 10/07. In Fax Settings, the modem shows as connected, but when I try to create an account, when I choose Receive Automatically or Notify Me, I get a box that says "To send a fax, you must first connect to a fax modem or server. To see how to set up your computer to send and receive faxes, see Help and Support". The only way I can create an account is to say I'll choose later. In that case, I can neither send nor receive faxes automatically, although I was able to receive faxes manually.

Cable Modem Resetting

May 15, 2010

how to get Windows to remember my modem settings. Every time I wake up or restart my computer I have to get Windows to reset my modem. This has only just started happening after I had help from Microsoft. They had me run a reset .bat to reset my services (in an effort to restart Security Center). It failed and I have since run Black Vipers "safe" settings and also turned off Media Center services. Microsoft help has left my computer in a worse state than it was before I went to them

Modem Connection Quit?

Apr 3, 2009

I haven't seen this specifically addressed: I have an HP Pavillion a6742p with an hp external modem attached to the back. Dial-up connection (one computer only) Very slow and very old school but it was working until last night. Now the diagnose and repair msg tells me "A cable is not plugged into the network adapter "Local Area Connection". The phone is fine, so is the fone line. Hooked up my brother's even older computer to internet just fine. Will not even give me a dial tone. External modem blue light is on, no problem with the external wires...I don't have wireless or router, etc., just phone line.

Connected To ADSL Modem: Can Access

Apr 30, 2009

I have my wife's and my own desktops (both XP Home) and my laptop (Vista Home Premium) all connected to the same ADSL modem. I want to set permissions so that I can access and do what I want with any file on any machine from any other machine.

On the XP machines this was a breeze. I can access either machine from any other machine and do whatever I want. But on the Vista machine, I'm prevented from doing this. The only files on the Vista machine that I can access from the XP machines are in the "Public" folder. I can't access the Vista machine's root menu or even the files in my own folder from the XP machines. When I try, I get this complaint:

You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Access is denied. "T-pc" is the name of the name of the laptop in the "Workgroup" and "rlb" is my folder. I'm the administrator, so where do I go from here? How do I make Vista let the other machines access my files?

Comcast Modem : Local Access Only

Mar 16, 2010

I am working on a toshiba satalite for someone but can not get internet access at my home. I have it plugged directly into the comcast modem but get the "local access only" message that seems to be such a problem for wireless users. When doing ipconfig /renew I get a message stating that windows could not contact the dhcp server. There doesn't appear to be anything wrong with the modem as it works fine with XP and Linux machines. Everything I have found related is talking about wireless issues and I've tried the registry edit provided by MS for setting the dhcp flag value to 1 and also disabled IPv6 and power options in the adapter configuration.

Zonet Fax Modem: How To Send Faxes

Jan 20, 2009

I bought a Zonet ZFM5621MT fax modem for $10 because I need to send faxes via my computer. My old fax machine finally broke. However, I cannot figure out how to send faxes through this damn thing. I thought I would just send the document to a fax/printer driver using the "Print" command, but there's no fax modem device under "Printers". When I looked in the Control Panel under "Phone and Modem Options", the computer does not detect a modem. When I powered up my computer after installing the modem into a PCI slot, Vista reports that it had successfully installed the driver for the hardware (it didn't specify what kind of hardware though, but I figure it must be the fax modem since it was the only new thing that I installed). I also manually downloaded the fax modem driver from Zonet (the manufacturer), and I installed it. It also reports that the driver had been successfully installed. However, I still don't see any modem under Device Manager or in the Control Panel.

Safe Modem And Boot Up, Get Blue Screen

Aug 24, 2008

I've been getting some troubles with my Vista computer booting up. Whenever I restart it (or even turn it off and then back on without leaving it for a long while), it will crash during the loading screen, and then restart, and then crash, creating an endless loop unless I boot up in Safe Mode. Once I'm up in Safe Mode, and go to restart, there are no troubles at all, and I can use the computer normally. So, for the time being, I must for boot up in Safe Mode and then restart in normal mode. Occasionally, I get a blue screen before the boot up fails and the computer shuts down, only to restart and continue the endless cycle. When I do get to the desktop (using the Safe Mode trick I mentioned earlier), I may get an error message, containing this info:.....

Newbie Network:new Cable Modem Only Allow One Machine On At A Time

Aug 5, 2009

I have 2 computers,1printer, xbox360,and ps2. Comp1 running vista and comp2 running winxp sp3. I also have a 5 port ethernet hub. Last week I switched from DSL to Cable 20mb. With the dsl router all I had to do to allow both machines on line at same time was to just hook them up to the hub. No modifications needed. My problem is that the new cable modem (motorola) will only allow One machine on at a time. To switch machines I must reset the modem and re asign ip each time I switch machines. My ultimate goal in the end is to have all 4 machines be able to access the internet and each other. Can I accomplish this with the 5 port HUB, or do I need to buy a router. (wireless is out of the question).

Ethernet Broken (DHCP), Can't Connect To The Cable Modem

Oct 7, 2009

I can't connect to the cable modem at all. There is just no way to get it working for whatever weird reason. I don't get assigned any gateway, I don't get any IP (so it rewerts to a funky 169.whatever adress). Now, I used to have this exact cable modem connected to my computer, with internet, 2 days ago. I would share internet trough the other ethernet port that I didn't use to another computer, and everything would work. Then we just had our internet crap on ourself the other day. And it was my computer that just felt like killing the internet. Ever since: My computer wont connect to the internet at all, it wont even communicate and get ip from the cable modem.

And before I get any questions on it: Took the cable from the cable modem, and jerked it into the other computer, and presto, I'm talking to you guys. No problems at all, and it worked instantly. Didn't even have to reset or restart or configure anything on the other one. Sadly the other computer only has 1 Ethernet port, and the cable modem wont work with any routers inbetween, and also only has 1 Ethernet port on it (yay for stupid hardware *sigh*). So with that and that it working not 2 days ago, makes me really wonder what is going on.............
