Safely Remove Hardware / Warning - Cannot Be Stopped Now
Jan 24, 2006
When I plug in a thumb drive or my external hard drive for backups everything goes smoothly. But when I try to disengage it by bringing up the "safely remove hardware" screen from the little icon in my sys tray about half the time I try and "stop" one of those devices I get the warning that it cannot be stopped now, and to try again later. The drive is not in use or anything but I still get the warning.I've heard it's bad to unplug a thumb drive before "safely removing" it but sometimes I have no other option.
The "Safely Remove Hardware" function running in my eMachine XP Home Edition includes USB flash drives in its warning list. While I recognize that mechanical storage devices such as CD/DVD drives, etc., should be addressed, is there any kind of subtle danger to any system functions if I ignore the "safely remove" process when connecting and/or disconnecting USB flash drives?
I have XP running on a 300 GB raid 0 array but xp keeps the "safely remove hardware" notification for the two samsung drives (kind of ironic because removing one of them or stoping one of them would be tragic, not safe=))But my question is how to remove the message completley so as to have no accidents
When I plug in an SD card into my laptop, I get a little "safely remove hardware" in the systray. When I remove the card, can I just yank it out of the slot, or do I have to right-click on the icon and "Stop" the device? Is it safe to just yank it out? Obviously, I am not doing any copying when I am yanking it out.
When I hit the Safely Remove Hardware icon, a bar pops up that says something like "mass storage device". Am I supposed to hit on that bar before removing the hardware? When I hit on it it disappears. That makes me think I shouldn't hit on it, but need to know.
I got a pc in this the USB SAFELY REMOVE HARDWARE ICON keep appearing in the task bar. I want to unload it! When I boot up the pc it tells me it is not compatable with this system anyway - so WHY IS IT LOADING? I didn't choose for it to be there? THought you could hot swap anyway with XP usbs. Anyway In Win2K you could choose to not load this. Can't find in XP how to get rid of this! any help?
My computer with Win XP does not always have the safely remove hardware icon that comes up in the taskbar. I put a USB flashdrive in, and the icon came up. When I was through it was gone. I had no idea how to find it so I just unplugged the flashdrive. Is there a way I can make that Icon stay. It is not because it is a hidden icon.
I have this little icon (green) in the lower right corner of my screen next to norton. Cant seem to get rid of it, something about USB Mass Storage device???? When I check device manager all seems well. Have tried rebooting, removing mass storage device etc.
USB thumb drives and external HDD no longer show up in the "safely remove hardware" screen even tho they show up fine in 'my computer' and work fine with autoplay.there is nothing in the SRH screen. this happens with USB ports on the motherboard and on a USB card. The drives show in device manager. I can detect and remove the USB drives with 3rd party software like 'USB disk eject'. The drives are 'optimized for quick removal'. I've got rid of all 'ghost' drives and hubs in device manager and related registry entries (with drivecleanup). 'plug and play' service is running. I can't think of any strange software and drivers recently installed. I've googled a lot with no results.
I have an external 2.5" 80GB external USB hard drive. Windows will not let me remove it because "A program is still accessing it". However, I have killed every process that windows will allow me to kill, and killed and started "explorer" process. I have to restart the computer in order to remove the HDD.Any way to force windows to give me back my HDD?
My brother and I tried plugging in my mp3 player I've got this "safely remove hardware" icon in my system tray. I think we mite have plugged it into the 1394 port (what's a 1394 port for?). Anyway, it shows four external hard drives (I have 4 USB outlets on my computer. Right now I am using only one of the USB ports for my printer which works fine at bootup and after I use the "safely remove hardware" icon. So why is it there, how do I get rid of it so it doesn't come up every time WinXP starts?
I`ve got a little prob, whenever I plug a flashdisk into my pc the safely remove icon doesn`t show in the task bar... If i just plug the flashdisk out, it doesn`t want to work on another pc but if I plug it back in my pc it works. Is there a manual way to safely remove?
I just re-installed Windows XP, and it keeps telling me that I can safely remove "USB Mass Storage device", despite there not being one plugged in right now, and that I can safely remove my hard drive, which is an internal hard drive. It says this everytime I restarted to my computer.
I desperately need to remove the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon.I can't stand having a cluttered desktop. I know that this has been discussed here several times, but I have yet to find a solution. I'm using an ancient Dell 3500 notebook with XP Pro. I've had an old 3com Ethernet PC Card for years, and I wanted to use it in XP. As I'm sure you all know, it puts that annoying icon in the system tray. In Windows 2000,they had a way to make it so that the icon was not required to be displayed, but I haven't found a similar option in XP. Is there something I'm missing here, or does anyone know of a third-party app, or anything like that? Also, I know that you can hide inactive icons, but the ">>" thing that shows the condensed tray takes up just a much space as keeping it as-is.
The "safe to remove hardware" icon is missing from the task tray. When a USB device (flash drive) is plugged in there is no way to safely unplug it. I have tried run>RunDll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll> and sometime this will allow me to safely unplug a device, but not always. HP suggest reformatting the hd, but I prefer not to do this. Any suggestions?
I am running Windows XP Professional with SP2. Windows Firewall is installed, as is, the excellent, Nod32 Antivirus.
I lost the Safely Remove Hardware icon and also the Volume Control icon from the Notification area of the System Tray. I do not recollect why or how this came about.
I realized that the SRH icon can be made to show up in the System Tray by:
Click on Start/Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices and placing a check mark in the 'Place volume icon on the task bar' check box.
This immeditely places the two icons referred to above in the System Tray.....
I have installed via a USB socket on my computer a Belkin-branded Wireless USB adapater. This device, although removable, will not be removed regularly from the computer and so I would like the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon to not be displayed because of it, as it currently is. The option to hide the icon via the Taskbar properties is not the fix I am looking for, either.
I have a DELL 8100 with WIN XP Pro installed.Recently the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the sys-tray has disappeared. How can I retrieve it and, in the meantime, can I safely disconnect USB equipt. without first shutting down?
When I plug in a USB memory stick, my camera or an external hard drive, I get no tray icon (green arrow): the first two items I can 'eject' but I don't even get that option for the hard drive. However, when I loaded software and downloaded pictures from a phone for a friend, the icon and removal option appeared.
After using my USB memory stick this evening, I went to the taskbar to click the "safely remove hardware" icon, only to find it was not there. I restarted the computer (my catch-all trouble shooting method) and still did not get an icon when I inserted the USB drive. I also tried plugging in my iPod and got no icon. (Note: the flash drive and iPod function perfectly fine, it's just the "safely remove hardware' icon that's missing - annoying) Did I inadvertantly change some sort of settings. The computer is an HP PCm7250n running XP mediacenter edition, the flash drive in question is a SanDisk cruzer micro.
In my taskbar I have the "safely remove hardware icon" all the time. When I double click on it and click stop it shows four devices; TEAC USB Hs-Sd Card USB Device (Drive H) TEAC USB Hs-Ms Card USB Device (Drive G) TEAC USB Hs-xD/SM Card USB Device (Drive F) TEAC USB Hs-CF Card USB Device (Drive E) Nothing is even connected to the drives, so why am I getting the icon? And how can I stop it from displaying these drives?
After safely removing hardware .. Theres suppose to be a confirmation popup advising that its safe to remove (or not) Mines missing ... can I get it back ?
