In windows XP the network printers cannot be accessed in an anonymous logon although there are shown to be installed and online. Intermittent error messages include "printer driver not installed" and "word may be able to continue without printer information". Printers respond normally.
I install a shared workgroup printer on a computer in the workgroup (not the computer it's physically attached to). Then on some login names, in their Printers and Faxes folder I see the same printer but the word "Auto" is in front of it. These often have limited ability to work.why they show up and how.
I cannot install any printers nor can I see any in the Printers and Faxes. I can print and they show up under printers to select from programs but because I can't see them, I am having trouble updating programs like Adobe. Adobe fails making a reference to the printers.

I checked the print spooler under Services and it is running. I have stopped and restarted it but the "Printer and Faxes" screen is still blank.
Each workstation has a printer attached and no problem printing on the network. This workstation has attached a Brother HL1435, which does not print from DOS manufacturer specifications and of course I had establish for this station another printer from the network as default printer. But when I am trying to print from this station all my printers are gone, vanished.
I have an xp pro machine, 3.0 mghz, 1g ram, pent 4, on a 10/100 tcp/ip Lan. I print and plot to an hp laserjet 4 plus and an hp designjet 1050c plotter. Both are working fine. The hitch is that I wanted to check the properties for the laserjet the other day and when I selected the "start/settings/printers and faxes" they DO NOT SHOW. Also I am UNABLE TO ADD A PRINTER. I have checked and the script services are started which I thought they would be as I can print just Fine but I need to fix this. I appreciate any help I can get on this, I have searched the newsgroups and only find fixes for NT (which I tried to no avail). I will watch for responses here but you could also e-mail.
I have trouble installing a nec superscript 660plus with windows xp I've tried to find an update for the driver but I found out that NEC was not developping them anymore, this device is using "GDI" technology wathever that is.
They are both plugged into USB plugs, I have some on the back and 2 on the front of the PC. Maybe using each one in a different location? Right now I have the Canon 6000D set up and also PRIMO PDF that uses the printer to save in PDF mode (this is selected in the print options box at the time). It SEEMS like the Lexmark should just show up there, as a choice. Not having it set as "default".
old Stylus 400 and a Stylus Photo RX620. They both work fine up to this morning. They will print every thing that comes up with the exception the have stopped printing any thing that I have of Corel WordPerfect 12. The window come us stating "preparing document" and nothing happens. This anomaly is driving me up a wall.
I use to be able to share my printers over my network , but since adding service pack 2 for windows xp , when i try to connect to my printer over the network , windows displays a message saying.' The driver isnt installed ; browse for driver
To set different printers for different programs? About half of the printing I do at work has to be on letterhead, so I set my default printer and settings to letterhead. However, when I just want to print an e-mail from outlook, I'd like to be able to print on plain paper. As it is, Outlook won't let me modify my printer preferences so that it will just print an e-mail on plain paper.
How can I reconnect to the two printers that are connected to a w2k pc, in every login on a wXP? When I try to print, the system asks me to log in the w2k machine.
Trying to get printers networked for our computers. We have about 8 computers and 4 printers. I have a "cheat book" called XP for Dummies that I got the computers networked but tried to get the printers to work on 2 computers and kept getting this message that I had either put in the wrong printer name or the printer wasn't hooked up to the network.
I am connecting to a Windows 2003 Server using Remote Desktop. The client PC is running Windows XP. No client printers show up on the server. I have installed the drivers on both server and client. I have selected connect to printers in RDC logon options
My printer was somehow uninstalled. When I go to the Printers and Faxes window to add the printer, it tells me "Operation could not be completed." I've tried to reload the driver from the CD but that doesn't work either.
After upgrading from NT 2000 to XP Pro and SP2 connot access network printers .. They can be pinged so no connectivity problem.Tried deleting them then cannot add.Search they show up but when try to add error says wrong printer name or printer not online. One thread said to uninstall network card and wireless card, but this is not a network problem.Local printer is O K.
In a controlled environment, my users can access the control panel by going to RUN then type CONTROL. I need to know if there is a command similar to that to open the Printers and Faxes window without going through the control panel? (I don't like users to go where they don't belong!)
Can anyone tell me how i can allow my Win2K domain users to add local printers to their XP Pro workstations? I've tried eveything I know in local machine accounts and domain GPO security and nothing works. I cant believe that there's not a way to do it, but Im about ready to give up. If the local users can add network printers, why should it be so difficult to add local printers?
I have possibly a simple but annoying problem. Every time I restart my Windows XP Pro desktop the computer tries to install (unsuccessfully) a printer 2 times. During that process, the computer slows down extensively. The printer attached to the computer is installed and operating correctly. How can I stop my computer from trying to install an unknown printer?
Two identical Dell PCs each with XP Home SP1, and a different USB printer on each. Both printers behave the same.On booting the PC and printing a document, the first page may or may not print, but then the printer goes to Offline mode.
On a computer I have running Server 2003 the printers and faxes window wont open. It was opening fine earlier. If any one knows how I can fix this with out rebooting it
I recently changed the overall output to printers from B/W + color to only B/W to help on save a little cost on inks. Now I need to print with color and I can't find out how to get it turned back on. Where I changed it was before the printers so the each printer's properties won't let me change it. I should have wrote it down and soon will if I get a resolution here. The ink bars on the printing status blocks only show black ink so I know the command is set before them. Any help someone may give would be greatly appreciated.
I purchased the following system from Costco and was glad I was able to purchase the system complete without having to add components after the sale. I have tried and tried to get used to Vista (6 months) but as I am disabled and my brain doesn't always compute efficiently, I've had difficulties. Mostly with getting things recognized on the small network in my home. My other computers run XP and I wonder if there is not some conflict with the different operating systems trying to access the same files and printers? Finally I just decided to go back to XP..
I am running a Windows XP SP2 with 768 Ram and a 2.66 GHz Pentium 4 CPU. I recently purchased a 20GB Maxtor OneTouch II USB hard drive and it came with Retrospect HD to back up my comptuer. The program will not do anyhting if i click setup so I can set it up to back up my computer. It also says ''updating status'' the whole time. Ihave left it at this screen for a long time and still nothing happened. I downloaded and installed the updrade for this from Maxtor's website, and it is still doign the same thing. Any suggestions on how to get this prgram working so I can back-up my computer?
If I use this to back-up my computer, and I use its restore feature, will I get problems on my computer that I currently have? (the main problem is with Windows Firewall, becuase i cannot enable it. My ocmptuer got infected a couple months ago and ever since is says it is controlled by Group Policy. For more detals on my problem click here I am using ZoneAlarm, but it will not work with my home network for sharing files and printers even though I have the IP address unblocked).
Tweak Description: Just like the title says this registry hack will add printers and folders, scheduled tasks, network connections, fonts, and administrative tools to my computer which makes it very easy to navigate through the system settings. Note: it is recommended to back up the registry before any registry hacks.
