Im running XP SP2 and when i restart my pc my 2nd DVD drive does not show up in "my computer" but for some reason when i shut down the PC and then fire it back up there it is this something that can be fixed or am i going to have to shut down everything as opposed to restarting from now on?

If I double click the C drive or D drive, Its showing Properties. Instead of opening the drive.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am going to try to explain this as best I can. This is a friends computer. She has this sewing machine that has a memory stick that she plugs into her computer. As you can see on the 1st screen shot "removable Drive L" is NOT present. It used to show but it does not show anymore. She sad that she clicked on "EJECT DISC", and now Removable Drive L " does not show UNLESS she has the memory stick plugged in as you can see in the 2nd screen shot. So she is wanting to know how she can get "removable Drive L" to show up again, like drives. G,H,I and J. I am asking her for more information because now that I look at these screen shots, I see in the 2nd one that she actually is showing "6" Removable drives.

I've figured out a couple (re-enabled Registry Editing; re-enabled Task Manager; Re-enabled "Display" in control panel), but there are 2 i can't figure out:When I go into "My Computer", my C: Drive is no longer listed.The "Log Off" button no longer appears on the Start menu. Only the "Turn off Computer" button is there.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have 80GB hard drive on my computer. I only have 31GB free space. My total size is 74.5GB. So I'm assuming the 5.5 is made up of programs needed to run the computer. I have deleted all my music video and audio files/folders which were taking up even more space. I've tried defragmentation, emptying the recycle bin etc etc. I've uninstalled some rarely used programs. In my Program Files there are 49 Items taking up 34.3GB of space. Surely this is too much, I do have Nero and Roxio which take a lot of space. Looking at 'Control Panel' I see 'Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1', 'Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2' and also 'Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 2'. Do I really need 1.1 and 2.0 if I have 3.0

I have spent hours and hours trying to fix this and posted on several forums to no avail My laptop died last week when I spilt water all over it. The harddrive was not effected and stayed completely dry.I am basically trying to save the data on the harddrive and completely wipe/format it.I bought a 2.5" SATA > USB enclosure/caddy and put my laptop HDD into the enclosure. When I plugged the enclosure into my spare PC using the power/USB Y cable, the enclosure powers up and the LED light comes on. I can also feel/hear the laptop HDD inside spinning. A message comes up on the PC saying "New hardware found; USB mass storage device". Then about 1 minute later it shows the following message
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy external USB hard drives always used to show up in either My Computer, or Windows Explorer's double pane view in Windows XP. Although they still show in My Computer, they do not show up in Windows Explorer anymore, unless I select them in My Computer First - and then choose the "Folders" selection. do Not give me the standard answers which are for External drives that don't show up Anywhere .. because the drives DO show up in Disk Management, and they DO show up in My Computer, and this is Not a new drive that needs to be formatted.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Compaq Presario with a Celeron CPU 2.53 GHz and 504 MB of Ram. I use Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 3. I know its a old machine but does what I need it to do. My computer has done this for a long time but I'm getting sick of having to restart the system to access CD drive. When system initially boots up the CD drive will open and close just fine but sometime later (not sure exactly how much later, (hours of 1-2 days) the door won't open by pushing button or sticking pin in small hole. If I go to My computer it doesn't even show the CD drive. What could be causing this?

I have now taken out the har ddrive with Windows Vista on it, but it still gives me the choice of booting from either Windows XP or Windows Vista.I edited the Boot.ini file, but it didn't have Windows Vista listed as a bootable option, so I left the Boot.ini file alone. It currently looks like this:;

When A program updates it ask you restart and you click on yes. The PC closes everything and shuts down to the post and there it stays with the cursor blinking. You have to turn it off and then power back on. At the point where it where it stalls at the reboot, there is no hard drive activity so it doesn't hurt to shut it down. It is just a pain in the butt.
View 3 Replies View RelatedNo matter what I do, when I change the properties of a single directory to either show or not show hidden files and folders, that property then changes in every single directory on the whole drive. I do not click on "Apply to All Folders", I just go to the directory of interest and change the button in Folder Options>View and press "OK". Is there a trick here? Basically I want some folders to show hidden folders, and others to not show them. Right now it's either all or nothing! Again, I am NOT pressing apply to all, which I know will apply all view settings to every folder.

After a full day of cleaning, I have a perfectly usable and clean computer, however, my c: and d: drives are not displaying in my computer.They are listed in device manager, disk manager,and I can access programs off of them c: is my boot drive just nothing in my computer.I was able to create a shortcut to both of their root directories so I can browse them. All windows programs show them as viable drives and will browse, so this is more of a nuisance than a dire situation, however, it is a bit crippling.

When i start pressing keys really fast my hard drive beeps and the computer restarts, but before it restarts and closes teh game, a message comes up about sticky keys, but then it closes out really fast and i have no time to read it and then the computer restarts. Unfortunately, I've made a LOT of changes in the past few days (new programs, a system restore, windows registry cleanup, startup configuration changes, etc.) so I have no idea what caused this.

View 7 Replies View RelatedWhen I open My Computer by double clicking from the Desktop, my 4 drives C/D/E/F are displayed in the right window pane. Now when I try to open the D or E drives by double clicking the Drive letters, i'm unable to open the drives. Whereas with the same procedure i'm able to open the C and F drives by double clicking. When I right click my D and E drives. I'm seeing that the Explore and Search options/attributes are missing and in that place I get to see some junk characters displayed, and rest of the other options/attributes are displaying normally.

When I start my computer, it pops up with the standard menu it uses when an OS error has caused a restart. I can't get it too load windows using safe mode, last known good configuration, or normal mode. I never even see the windows loading screen, it restarts immediately.

I hope someone maybe able to come up with something.I have XP Professional installed. On Control Panel/Regional & Language Options/Languages/Details/Advanced the "turn off advanced text services" always seems to get rechecked. Even if you uncheck it the language bar on the task bar does not appear (even though it is ticked on Taskbar/right-click/Toolbars). If the Language bar option becomes available on Control Panel/Regional & Language Options/Languages/Details/Settings, when you open it all the Language Bar Settings are greyed out.

Instead I have to right click > properties > change icon > OK. Instead of automatically installing the icon, it shows this:on the desktop. It displayed a similar image for virtually everything in the start menu too. This meant I had to install every single icon in the start bar menu manually! What is causing this? How can I fix it so it automatically displays icons for newly installed items?
