Immediate Logoff From Any Account
Aug 16, 2005I was attempting to eliminate some spyware and accidently deleted something that causes an immediate logoff from any account. I am using Windows XP Home. Any thoughts on fixing this?

Laptop Lid Logoff
Jan 25, 2007Is there any way to set a laptop to logout of the current user when the lid is shut. I was hoping it would be an option in the power options in the control panel but no luck, the only options are nothing and stand by. I am working with a Dell Latitude D620 with windows XP professional.

Jan 19, 2009I am trying to boot up a PC that allows me to log on and then I get a brief(1 sec) desktop background and then goes straight to logoff. It's running XP Prof and I went to recovery console and did a chkdsk /r and it said it fixed 1 or more errors. I ran it again and it was clean. It still won't work even in safe mode.

Here's the deal: I am running Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2.
I recently had a virus that took control of every exe file. I spent yesterday destroying that mess and trying to get my virus scanner and malware detection to work again. I did. Once I was up and running, full scans turned up a variety of corrupted system files. I'm not sure how deep it goes but my first and most obvious problem is I have a login/logoff cycle.
Widows Xp Auto Logoff After Login
Feb 9, 2008so every time I log in to windows xp pro the system starts to load the user settings background and startup programs then I get a message that the system can't load one of the startup programs because the system is shutting down. then the system completely shuts off.After an exhaustive search online I found the recovery/copy userinit.exe wsaupdater.exe fix and tried that but I still get the auto logoff. I've tried repairing the installation using the OEM CD, but that only works for the first login. after that, same issue. I've run antivirus and spyware apps to check the system, but found nothing (I did this inbetween repairs). After 6 times of going through this I'm ready to reinstall from scratch. It just annoys me that windows can break so easily. Did I meniton I hate windows? Anything you could suggest, would be appreciated. I wait to here from someone in the forum before tackling such a HUGE project as to reinstall Windows and all my programs and data.

System Won't Shutdown/restart/logoff Using Standard Dialog?
Oct 7, 2007I have recently built and deployed an SBS 2003 server. Today I joined one of my machines to that newly created domain. In this process (adding to domain, redirecting My Docs, etc.) I lost the ability to logoff. Not exactly clear when that happened, but the current state is no good.I cannot log off using the start menu items. When the logoff or shutdown dialogs come up I can click the OK or Log Off and the dialog goes away, but nothing happens. I have looked at the task manager and really nothing happens. CPU doesn't budge. I can continue working as long as I'd like.

Mar 21, 2009Windows XP Home SP2 in a Gateway Performer 1300 P4 I recently purchased a used computer locally from a private party. It seemed to work fine. Once I got it home, however, I discovered that when I tried to install the drivers for my wireless adapter, the InstallShield Wizard would come up and extract the files from the CD and then go away and nothing would happen. When I went to the Windows update site, it would not down load the activeX control to check my computer for needed updates. It did the same thing. It would show that it downloaded the file and then nothing would happen. I talked to a local computer shop and they said they have had a lot of trouble with "broken" Windows Installers lately. So I went to the Microsoft site and downloaded the updated Windows Installer (as they suggested) and this did not change anything.

All this does is creates a new user "don" and moves the "my documents" (I have downloaded numerous pdf files that I've created instructing him on how to update antivirus, antispyware and general info on computer use, security, etc. and placed it in the My Documents folder) from "mitch" to don".

I am logged in to a machine via remote desktop and another user with admin rights logs in via remote desktop and logs me off because they assumed that I had forgotten to log off or whatever else. Is there any permission setting either in group policy or elsewhere that would prevent a user attempting to connect via remote desktop from logging off an already logged on user? The problem is that both users are and need to be Admins.

I know all about pressing Ctr+Alt+Del twice and typing in your account and if that doesn't work, to use the "Administrator" account to enable your main account. Sep 11, 2005My owner account (where most of my files are) has been magically changed to "account unknown" under the System Properties/Advanced/User Profiles. I "see" the "Account Unknown" listed, but I am unable to access it. I tried signing in as the administrator, but no luck. I checked Windows help online, but no luck. I called Sony Vaio support, (support?), no luck. I am running XP Home Edition SP2 will all updates. I have found out that the files aren't gone, according to online readings, but getting to them is another matter. Virus In One Account Will Also Effect The Other Account?
Apr 5, 2005I have 3 user accounts on my computer, 2 of which are admins and the 3rd is my 7 year old daughter. Instead of moving start menu programs around, can I just put it all into the all users folder and somehow check which folders/files in there her account can access?
Also, when running anti-spyware/anti-virus programs from my account, will it catch nasties in the other 2 accounts as well or do I have to run the programs from each user account?

Mar 23, 2006It's apparently a lot safer to use a limited user account, and that's what I'm trying now, but it's also a pain-in-the-a$$.I also don't understand why the XP installer forces you to create another admin account, when you could simply login as 'Administrator'.You're supposed to login to the admin account to install everything, but when you do, in most cases, the shortcuts seem to only be created for the account you're logged into at the time. Very messy.The list goes on, and these things have probably been discussed before, but why is there a single 'Program Files' directory, which all users have access to? Surely there should be a separate directory for each user, so user A cannot access programs installed by user B, unless of course it was meant to be shared?

I rebooted just in case and the account was not available to select, but the generic Administrator account was now there. The guest account has been blocked and when you get to the welcome page bit there are no user names, so currently we are having to press alt, ctrl, del twice to get a weird boxy thing up to sign in. Jan 30, 2005I switched user in XP and found my account seemingly wiped. What i mean is, it is like a new user acct - no settings, desktop picture gone, no recent docs, try and run a program and it thinks it is the first time it has run, eg winzip.i have checked the docs and settings folder - it's still my user name, and no new one appears.worse still, when i try and change some of these new default settings, eg IE home page back to google, it ignores my instruction - in fact no new settings at all will be recognised by IE. I also ran mu usual suite of spyware (spybot, adaware, spyware blaster) and although they found updates and dl'd them, they refuse to be recognised during the immunise process. Anyhow, nothing found.
