Firefox Won't Load - Registry Is Corrupt
Nov 11, 2007
This machine has been unstable for a while now. It has gotten to the point where after every reboot, something has changed -- sometimes the sound device driver could not be loaded, reboot, it's ok, but firefox won't load, next reboot, my nvidia control panel won't load, reboot, something is funny with microsoft .net framework. Now after a reboot, I have the registry error: "one of the files containing the system's registry data had to be recovered by use of log or alternate copy". Bummer. This error, along with all of the inconsistent program and system errors, leads me to believe the registry is hosed. My questions are:
If the registry is corrupt, a clean install is the only answer?I don't know at what point it became corrupt, but are there telltale signs to look for as I am installing new software?

I tend to have problems with Firefox taking an unusually long time to load pages, and normally, I can solve that with using a System Restore. This time, though, I can't get System Restore to work. I've tried several times from various checkpoints, but each time I get a message saying "Incomplete Restoration." I know this topic has been posted before, and I tried using the advice given in this thread I disabled AVG Anti-Virus, but I didn't help. I know from the previous thread that you'll need to look at the system restore logs in order to help; so, I'll just post those now to save time.

I have a missing/corrupt hal.dll on an older emachines desktop. Window's doesn't get a chance to load and the computer won't boot CD's. The issue came up after I tried installing a chinese version of windows - the cd seems to simply inject a norton ghost image - but there was an error in norton and the install crashed. Now the computer boots, loads the bios, and displays the error. Is there a way to fix the file without loading a restore disk?

Trying to help out the grandparents, who just returned home from a trip. They tried setting up their computer and it is giving them the message about the file missing or corrupt (something similiar to this- I may have the order wrong: c:windowsconfigsystem 32) We printed off the directions from Microsoft for the recovery console. The first two files to copy regarding system and software indicate they "cannot be copied" however, the last three were able to be copied. I stopped my efforts there since the first two didn't work. I noticed a prior post indicated I could ignore the first two copy commands, is that correct? Or can I try a repair in the reinstall option? What should I try first? Unhooking the printer/speakers? Hardware issue? If that fails, try F8 and use last known configuration? If that works, do I do a system restore? When would I use "safe mode?" We are at different houses w/o wireless so I am trying to get all info I can before heading back over there.

Initially the computer had a spyware infection. While cleaning it up I got a message telling me some windows files had been changed and i needed to insert the Windows XP CD to restore them. Didn't have CD handy at the time, so I installed SP2 hoping it would replace the corrupt files. Soon afterwards I got a message on reboot saying Windows had recovered from a corrupt registry. I was going to do a SFC /scannow, but at some point I was no longer able to boot into Windows.

I have very minimal knowledge of computers, so please bear with me. I'd appreciate any help or advice. I'm not really sure what is relevant and what is not, so I may be including information that is completely useless. Until this weekend, I had xp home on my home computer. I use a program at work that I need to be able to use at home. I was using it without any problems until about 2 months ago, when the program did an upgrade. Since then, I have not been able to run this program at home. I have spent numerous hours in an open meeting with them, trying to fix the problem, and it seems to have baffled a lot of their tech support people. Finally, one of the tech support people noticed that I had xp home as my OS, and then told me that the program did not support xp home, only xp professional, so she couldn't help me any more, and said she suspected that was the problem.
I didn't think this was really the problem, but given that they would not help me any further, I purchased an upgrade to windows xp pro this weekend and installed it without any difficulty. Not surprisingly, the program from work still doesn't work. I spent another several hours earlier this week in an open meeting with the tech support people. The head guy told me that he thinks that there is a problem with my registry, and that is why the program is not working. I am not quite sure how he came to that conclusion, but it seems to be related to the fact that this weekend, after I installed xp pro, that one of my automatic updates (for windows installer 3.1 ) did not install with the error message 0x80070005. I have never had a problem with other updates not installing before, at least not that I'm aware of. Apparently, this update is crucial to running the program from work - or just updates in general are crucial?

when i'm going to this Repair Console in Win XP, booting from cd, pressing "r" and so on always comes that win setup could not be loaded because cdrom.sys or any other thing could not be loaded from cd. CD is clean and do not have any errors, cant even make new installation. Tested it on other pc there it goes, and tested other win XP Pro version on this PC it stopped. Booting with Kanotix a modified KNOPPIX boot without problems, so cd device has no errors, i think What can i do? Can i do anything? or is formating and reinstall because setup cant be loaded is the only solution??

my computer will just reboot itself every couple of days. When it asks for my password, it says it cannot display my profile because of an error or maybe a corrupt file (but not in those words exactly). The computer says it will give me a temporary profile but if it is rebooted, anything that I have saved on this temporary profile will go away forever. This is true?

I was trying to backup the registry of my Windows XP Home edition desktop, and I was going to use the program ERDNT. Mistakenly, I copied the folder over from my Vista laptop, forgetting that it carried backups of my Vista registry. So I launched the program, and mistakenly, restored my Vista registry backup onto my XP computer. I panicked, and tried doing a system restore right after. Now, everytime the computer starts up I get an error saying that msisadrv.sys is missing or corrupt. What can I do?

From time to time, I visit my registry. The following odd entries are new since I last looked. They appear to be empty and maybe even corrupt. Are they safe to remove? Is there any program that would identify these and mark them as removable? this is XP Sp2, if that matters. Only keys like this are in this hive.

I was running CyberScrub the other day, which is a program that cleans out internet cache and deletes files beyond recovery. After it was done with the procedure, the computer restarted and chdisk began to run before my Windows XP booted up. After Windows was done doing chdisk, it started doing some wierd stuff I've never seen before. It was scrolling down with the same line but with the number increasing into the thousands. I thought maybe it was just doing a routine check but when I when my desktop came up I started to notice all kinds of wierd errors now. Here are just some examples: My taskbar disappeared and there's no way to conventionally fix it (Start doesn't come up when I press the windows key on my keyboard). My soundcard is undetectable. I can't copy and paste from and to my browsers. Can't find my RPC server. I can't move my desktop icons, etc.

First my computer was cutting off in the middle of any program. I decided to delete everything on the drive and reformat it and reload windows xp. While trying to load windows xp it would load the set up but when going to load files it locked up everytime. I tried also loading windows 98, 95 and they too locked up. At one point it said I had a virus in my boot sector and at another time it said I had a virus in my RAM. I got a program called PC Beginner to help partition my drive and redo the MBR. I can partition the drive and format it but windows still doesn't load. Now I wonder if there is a problem with the mother board and I have a dual bios board, I was wonder if there is a program loaded in the dual bios that may somehow causing my problem. If so what can be done to clear the problem? How can I get windows reloaded?

PC was rebooted and this message showed up. I couldn't get to safe mode so I put the XP disc in. I got to the D:winint dir and tried to run bootcfg to scan for the boot file. It came back that it couldn't find it. I was able to see the dir's and data on the 2 drives. I ran chkdsk to see if that would solve the problem, it didn't. Do you think this is a BIOS problem or a missing boot problem. If it was the BIOS would I be able to read the drive. Looking for a fix without destroying everything.

My computer randomly started displaying this error upon start up a week ago and I have no clue what is causing it. I googled it and seen that it could be caused by a linksys wireless router, one was installed on the system before, but has been uninstalled for quite some time now. Can anyone help me correct this or at least help me figure out what is causing it?

I was wondering what the difference was whether you had a program load at startup (by checking a box within the program to have it load when the computer boots) and unchecking that box but moving a shortcut to the programs executable into the startup folder on the start menu.
Is there any difference?

I tried to delete the registry entries which were bad, I had 30 of them, but the these two will just not go away, even by doing them manually, such as saving as a backup then deleting it manually and remerging. They just show up no matter what I do, or so use programs like Registry Mechanic, which I found only mediocre, very far from the ratings. to delete these two entries somehow from someone who is actully knows how to without using several so called registry cleaners, which only work partially.
