Removing Win User Password Through Command Prompt
Nov 18, 2005
My win xp installation on the hard disk 'A has gone bad, therefore, its not able to boot up. But I can access 'A' through my other hard disk 'B' which has a good copy of win xp. The problem is that my hard disk 'A' had a user acct. which was password protected, therefore, when I browse using hard disk 'B' windows, I cannot access the user folder in hard disk 'A' as it says access denied. Now how can I remove the password of the user in my hard disk 'A' so that I can access the user folder.
Remember that the win xp is corrupted on hard disk 'A', so it does not boot up. So I guess something has to be done through command prompt only, as I can goto the command prompt by booting using windows cd and then selecting the repair function, and then entering the admin password.

I have looked at the answers you have given for this subject, and none seem to apply to me. I lost my boot disks in the hurricane, and my son has somehow changed all the passwords, including the administrator one, and then locked the computer. When I reboot, even in safe mode, I come immediately to the "Control-Alt-Delete" screen. We have tried every password we could think of, and the users now just get the error that we've been locked out. I have tried every Administrator password I would have set, including no password at all, to no avail. So I cannot get to a command prompt even from Safe Mode.
Honestly, I would be happy to just reformat, but I can't even get to the DOS prompt, and I don't have a DOS reboot disk for this computer (lost too!). No other computers are running that version of XP, so I can't make one from one of those either.

I have a stored email address that is bad, has a comma instead of a
period. It is first in the list when I try to use one of the stored
list. A real pain to have wrong entries or a list that is too long.

I have multiple users on one machine. The PC is constantly going on standby and locking them out. I have set the power settings for several users, but i cannot set them for all.I have a script running that resets the power configuration to "always on" in the registry, but it does not overwrite the standy and hard disk settings under power management. If they are set to 15 minutes, it stays at 15 minutes even if the cofiguration is changed from Home to Always on.
Also I cannot have the password on resume unchecked by default for all users. It has to be manually done. I ahave triied registry and GPEdit settings for all of these but no joy.

I would like to know if this can be done in win xp environment. say I have a folder, A, of pictures only and they all have file extensions jpg eg abc.jpg, xyz.jpg. say I have a second folder, B, which contains all the files of A(if you ignore extensions) and more(but all are pictures.) But all the files in B has extensions NEF instead of jpg eg abc.NEF, efg.NEF, xyz.NEF. My idea is to extract all the files from B that has the same the name as A(ignoring extensions) and either move or copy to a separate folder ie if A contains abc.jpg, xyz.jpg then abc.NEF and xyz.NEF will be extracted and moved/copied to a new folder. I'm not sure where to start. is there a program out there that can do this? or there's a special command to type at the command prompt?

Previously I have been doing work that requires me to unplug my network connection and I need to check my IP address each time I plug it in again. I guess it's not set for static IP.Anyways to do this I usually go into Command Prompt and type 'ipconfig'Now however I just get "'ipconfig' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file".The directory is the same as its always been, I can change it but it doesn't seem to matter what it is.I've checked many other posts and is there something possibly wrong with my PATH variable? I used the command 'echo %PATH%' and it works, the list it gives is very garbled however.

I have Windows XP on my computer, and when I try to ping something through the command prompt (command.com), this shows up:Running tracert also has the same problem. If I try running ping or tracert through cmd.exe, it stalls and doesn't do anything. I have to close the program because it doesn't respond.I can use ipconfig in both cmd.exe and command.com. Do I have a virus on my computer, or is there a way to repair the command prompt?

I have Windows XP Home and for some reason, all of a sudden I am unable to run any kind of commands in the Command prompt under Start - Programs - Accessories. I used to be able to run things like system file checker and ipconfig but for some reason I cannot now. Could DOS be corrupted or am I just accessing things wrongly. Last time I tried to run IPCONFIG I received a message that said "IPCONFIG is not recognized as an internal or external command operable program"....Also when I open up the command prompt it says C:Documents and Settings Username.

It always starts with (c:documents and settingsmark>) is this how it is supposed to start out.Every time I type a command it never works. I want to type this- tasklist /m /fi "IMAGENAME eq rundll32.exe" >C:undll32.txt because my pc would not let me shut down kept saying rundll32.exe was not responding. Earlier I clicked on windows card space because I had not seen it before to see what it was and it started the service, when I clicked on it again it said it was to busy to answer my request.I never heard of such! It uses rundll32.exe, I think.I finally hit "end now" and rebooted, now I got 2 rundll32.exe's.I found that command on Ramishes site under "whats the suspicious Rundll32.exe" http://windowsxp.mvps.org/rundll32.htm Anyway I thought cmd should start with "c:" and thats it?

Hey! I am having a big problem with my command Prompt. Everytime I try and open a program that uses it, the prompt appears on the screen but disappears in a split second. It's like a quick flash. Now, when I open the prompt by itself by going to it in "Start---All Programs---Accessories---Command Prompt, it works fine. But I can't do hardly anything from there.
Any advice?

I tried to get rid of Win XP Pro on partition 2, which it looks like I did. Now I have partition 1 and it has Windows Home Edition on it. I think maybe I have done something incorrectly. Shouldn't this drive c be one big drive now? I just see drive c, which doesn't really have that much room on it. Do I have to format the drive and start all over? I don't understand. I have instructions on how to edit boot.ini, but when I followed the instructions, the command prompt doesn't recognize bootcfg /?, saying there is no such file. If I have to format and start all over, I will.

With Windows XP I don't find that option. I can get to the Command prompt C:, but it won't let me format the harddrive.Any assistance with this would be much appreciated, I am trying to re-format and re-partition.

I have just gotten a second hand computer that has had it's hard drive cleaned out. Trying to load the OS, I first loaded win98se, and then XP.What I did not know was that 98SE loaded in a 2gb partition, without me partitioning the drive. Then loaded XP into the main partition. Now, there are various faults.I have tried to run fdisk, both in drive c: (the partition with 98x) and drive e: (the partition with XP)Neither will allow me to run fdisk to clear the hard drive and start again. I have tried all possible commands as per my old MS-DOS book. It states it cannot find fdisk either in command prompt or run.

I have Windows XP Pro. I have 2 PCI slots, one containing 120 mb and the other containing 256 mb giving me a total of 394 mb of memory. I bought 3 different sticks of 256 mb (due to I thought ram was bad, but its not.). I looked in Bios and it shows 2 sticks of 256 ram giving a total of 512 mb, BUT I had to take the new ram out due to when I would turn pc on a black screen would come up and I would select "start windows normally" and all that did was just keep rebooting. I have tried doing a bios update but unable due to when I put in the command on the command prompt it came back saying bad command.
