About two months ago, despite all the security software I have in place, two Trojans were discovered in the Gateway machine.Stupid me, instead of leaving them in quarantine, I deleted them, taking out a piece of my boot sector where they must have embedded themselves.It was telling me that the NTLDR file was missing among other things.I had been guilty of not doing regular backups and had an enormous amount of data on my hard drive.I had already purchased a large external storage unit including auto backup software with good intentions and then put it in the closet unopened for several months to be dealt with at a later date.At the first hint of trouble before deleting the Trojans I quickly dumped my documents and photos into my husbands computer, and just in time because I could not even boot into safe mode after I lost boot capability, and the machine was stuck in a continuous restart cycle.
I disabled the restart on boot failure option in setup and tried the System Restore option to try and repair the windows files, but it would not allow me to choose the non destructive restore option. It kept warning me that all my files would be deleted and gave me no other option than to say OK. Then at that point I would have to shut down the machine to get out of that screen and avoid starting the restore. I have an XP pro upgrade version disk that I purchased a few years back, but I can never get the files to all copy correctly for a clean windows install and I didn't know if it would repair a windows installation that had a restore partition loaded on the same hard drive.
I'm trying to add a path value to my existing path statement for XP (via control panenel->system, advanced tab, environment) but it is truncated. If the size limit is 1023 chars, then I'm well under this.I change the PATH variable via:Right click My Computer, Properties, Advanced tab;

View 2 Replies View RelatedI was wondering if anyone knows the file path ( if there is one) that would let you open the recycle bin via task manager (new task run) under win2k pro? I just had a call from a friend who, after installing google tool bar (by "mistake" )then used the search function and removed all of the files by hand .The end result was that the pc hung, and when she restarted explorer.exe does not start,(therefore no desktop, start menu etc) task manager does however function and i have managed to get her to open programs that way As she deleted the files to the recycle bin i was wondering if there is a way to restore them by opening the recycle bin threw task manager? if there is then presumably i would need to give her the file path, and was wondering :-
A/ if it is possible to do this &
B/ (if it is) if any kind person knows the file path to the recycle bin .exe ? I realize that this might not be possible and it might seem a lot more involved than simply poping in the win2k CD and doing a repair on the OS, but having done this with her before i know it will mean spelling out every action.
I guess the question asks what I'd like to know. I'm trying to set up the programmable keys on my new keyboard and I'm supposed to type in the file paths.

Specifically, this error appears when attempting to open one of these: On some help forums rundll32 was pointed to as the cause of the problem, and I found entries in Comodo's Defense+ Log where various programs (mostly explorer.exe) were calling rundll32.exe, but it was being blocked everytime.I have tried disabling Comodo (and ending the proccess) but it doesn't make a difference.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI believe I have committed a fundamental eejit blunder. For reasons that are too complicated to explore here I cleaned my 140 gig Seagate C Drive (no, not that reason) with two wipes using the Kill Disk programme. I then re-installed XP Pro which also includes a formatting phase. All appeared well as I installed AVG anti-virus, Zone Alarm Pro, and Ad Aware; I then loaded Picasa, Adobe and all the bits and pieces that make for fun and utility.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently migrated numerous user profiles from XP SP2 workstations in an NT domain to new XP SP2 desktops in an SBS 2003 domain. The original workstations were formatted FAT32. The new workstations are NTFS.I logged on to the old workstations as the Domain Admin and copied the user profiles on each machine to the server. I then deployed the new system, logged on as the users to create the folder structure, then logged on as the Domain Admin, and overwrote the new local profiles with the copies stored on the server. When logging on as the user without local admin rights, none of the users settings were applied. If the user was made a local admin,then the correct settings were applied.I checked permissions and ownership of the files in the profiles. I had to assign ownership of the files to the user as the domain administrator was listed as owner. The permissions were correct

View 12 Replies View RelatedMy 'restore' has completely disappeared. I followed the advice given on in one of your forums, going to start/run/inf and then right clicking sr.inf and then install. I received a pop-up box asking for the file path (a path is already given, but it must not be correct) as well as a message stating I need to insert my xp service pack two cd and that I should then reboot. I did this, but I still receive the same pop-up and message. I don't know what path to type and obviously, when I rebooted, I didn't install anything. I tried to figure out how to extract just what I needed from the cd but I admit it, I'm a deer in the headlights.
